Re: [videoblogging] Re: can i use digital camera for vblog ?

2007-03-03 Thread Steve Garfield
I used a Canon S400 at 320x240 for 2 years. It was great and I
didn't even know it had a 2 minute recording limit until I was
recoding someone's talk one day and the camera stopped recording.

Then I figured out about the 2 minute limit.

Newer cameras are only limited by the memory size as to the length of
the recording. Make sure you check that prior to buying.

I've been recently testing the Nokia N93 and N95 cell phones. They
shoot 640x490 at 30 fps and have stereo mics on them.

This new vlog I'm working on was shot on the N93:

http://spicesoflife.com/2007/02/12/needling-nina-accupuncture-with-dr-
zhu/

or

http://tinyurl.com/34rch9

I think the audio is really good. An additional audio track was also
recorded onto a PowerBook for this episode, for radio, but I decided
to just use the on camera audio.

The only drag was that I only had 30 seconds at a time to record. It
allowed me to build up my skills so that when I was ready for the next

The movie specs on your camera:

 4:3 Aspect Ratio
 • 640 x 480 @ 30fps / 10fps
 • 320 x 240 @ 30fps / 10fps

16:9 Aspect Ratio - Sweet in a still camera!
 • 848 x 480 @ 30fps / 10fps

There is more info that you can download at the Panasonic UK web site
(that was the link that I found on the dprview page)
 http://www.panasonic.co.uk/customer-Support/download-catalogue.asp

The main thing is to figure out if you can live with the constrictions
that you will face vlogging with a still camera. It can be done, it
has been done but there are adjustments.

Advertising is flawed by definition, corrupt in its basic premise, a premise
that in a pinch, excludes truth.

One cannot accept money toward one's survival and in the pinch - when it
really matters - tell the sad truth about the advertiser.

It's all fine and dandy until the advertiser screws up. Screwups are
inevitable. Behind every advertiser are fallible humans.

Humans will lie to survive.

That's a dilemma.

How do we pry ourselves off the dilemma's horns? Hmmm?

By committing to tell the truth at the risk of losing the advertising

By choosing clients carefully.

There are quite a few reasons why advertisements need to be _inside_
videos. This assumes, as Chris pointed out, that the content creator
desires to make money with his/her video. This is the same
conversation as how do we make sure that people see (and/or respect)

If the advertisement isn't inside the video, then, as you mentioned,
as soon as the video is watched out of context, the ad's no longer on

someone will click on an ad they never see. As far as advertisements

wrecks my immersion in the piece. I'm actually less likely to watch a

I am likely to watch a video where I know there's going to be a pre,

The important questions are how to make the ads relevant to the
content, and as you brought up, the MOOD of the video, and how to make

[videoblogging] Re: what software to import and edit powerpoint into movie ?

2007-03-03 Thread Gena
Are you on PC or Mac? The following ideas are PC based.

This is an option. There is free software that can convert PP into
Flash .swf format. From there you can import into QuickTime Pro or
other video editing programs that accept. the .swf format.

Open Office can convert Powerpoint into .swf but you do lose the
animations. It is free. http://www.openoffice.org/product/

FlashSping Lite maintains the animations but you might not like the
Demo notice or banner
http://www.flashspring.com/products/flashspring_lite.html

File Format.info has an online PPT to Flash converter
http://www.fileformat.info/convert/doc/ppt2swf.htm

Swish Presenter converts PPT into Flash .swf format. It is $99 but you
can view a demo of what it and the other products do.

http://www.swishzone.com/index.php?area=productsproduct=presentertab=overview

Just a thought,

 Hello friends,
Here's a reminder for our next meeting this coming Sunday.

 Boston Media Makers
Next Meeting: March 4th, 10:00 AM
Sweet Finnish, 761 Centre Street, Jamaica Plain, MA

 Agenda:
 10:00 - 10:30 Mingling
Chatting and mingling in the front room of Sweet Finnish.

 10:30 - 11:30 Roundtable
We take the time to go around the table and introduce ourselves.

Everyone introduces themselves and fills us in on what they are
doing. Each person gets at least 3 minutes.

Present a show and tell, a how to, or ask a question.

 11:30 - 12:00 Discussion

This month we have at least two discussion topics...

 A New Look At Content:
Capturing and sharing fleeting moments, a video production studio
in your pocket, broadcasting from the street.
 Steve Garfield
 http://stevegarfield.com

Let's talk about how new portable media making devices can put
broadcasting power in the hands of everyone. Cellphones that
include high quality video capture, editing and distribution will
enable lots of people to share their stories.

 This will change everything.

Production Values Discussion, Do They Matter?
 David Tames, Filmmaker Media Technologist
 http://kino-eye.com

An open ended discussion. All techniques (whether intentional or
not) are part of our vocabulary as visual storytellers and
communicators. When is it best to shot and get whatever and when
might we want to worry about production values like good
lighting, sound, framing, etc. ? There are aesthetic and moral
issues at stake in this issue. When should we mimic professional
media and when should we do our own thing?

 See you there!

That's an interesting philosophical way to think about it, making the
choice between getting the money from a product you don't believe in
and speaking out authentically against something you think is wrong or
incorrect. Of course, that's a major consideration for news channels
in how they report things and what they report... which corporation is
paying for them to have equipment, electricity and jobs. You get paid
to support their agenda instead of to stand up for your own line of
reasoning or what you think is right.

It's all fine and dandy until the advertiser screws up. Screwups are
inevitable. Behind every advertiser are fallible humans.

 Humans will lie to survive.

 That's a dilemma.

How do we pry ourselves off the dilemma's horns? Hmmm?

By committing to tell the truth at the risk of losing the advertising
 client.

 By choosing clients carefully.

Which, of course, is impossible when your ad is automatically generated.

Advertising reeks with lies. I challenge you to watch an evening's
worth of
television with a lie filter in your brain. Some lies are mere
hyperbole;
 others, flat-out insulting with untruth.

As a result of the ubiquitous lie, we are inured to them. A dangerous
 mindspace in which to live.

Trusted filters. Social currency. That's my answer.

The whole question of WHY someone puts videos on the internet is worth
exploring. Is it done for money? Internet fame? Self-expression?
Public service? Speaking to the ten or entertaining the hundreds of
thousands? Monetizing videos can lead to the shift of focus from
creating the content to getting paid for it. Making videos to reach
the desired demographic instead of videos you'd make if money wasn't
an issue.

The whole point of advertising is to get your money before you give it
to someone else. :) No room for the truth in there! :D

Thanks for stating that Enric. I don't think much of anything is
inherently evil. Life is about context, and in that sense, anything is
possible. It is in the specifics that we find ourselves making
choices. I see so much opportunity for formerly disparate groups of
