Re: [videoblogging] Re: Hey PodTech - What's up with Lan's image?
Hi John, I realise this has made you cross, but I've also been responsible for keeping it in the Group here because I think it needs to be aired - for various reasons that I've explained before and won't rehash at length now. Lan has actually been the model of restraint and has not written much here about it, and has only written in response to questions by other people who also think it's something they want to discuss here. The price of the photograph is actually not really unfair, if you look into it. And it's not just the value of the photograph - there's an accepted premium element paid by someone who's used a photograph without permission, credit, payment. As for 1982 prices, they can't really be compared. Everything has shifted so much in the last 35 years, particularly in the media and in terms of cost of living and value of the dollar and a whole bunch of other things. Back then Heaven's Gate and Inchon were considered extravagantly expensive Hollywood movies, and cost $44 million and $50 million respectively, I think. Heaven's Gate brought down United Artists. Spiderman 3 (this year) cost about $260 million, I think. Plus then about the same again in marketing - making it a half billion dollar movie. Also, in 1982 a 2/3 bedroomed row house in a not-particularly-special street in West London where I live was worth somewhere between £40k and £60k ($80k and $120k). It's now worth between £550k and £650k ($1.1m and $1.3m). So a lot has changed. But anyway, the value of the photograph is not set by these things, it's set by the market - and in a situation like this, $1000 isn't, as you said, more than fair. Hope all this helps to explain :) Also, for context, read (the whole of - and comments on) Casey McKinnon's blog post here: http://www.caseymckinnon.com/blog/2007/07/10/podtech-needs-more-podtact/ Cheers, Rupert On 12 Jul 2007, at 01:53, John Coffey wrote: Back when 3 Mile Island happened I was in a photo class and the word on the street was that Time magazine paid $2000 for their cover shot (in 1982 dollars). Re: [videoblogging] H.264 and Adobe help?
I have to be perfectly blunt with you: Get over it. It's $30 each time and it's not like they release a new version very often. You pay to upgrade every other piece of commercial software also. I didn't mind the bluntness :) I have paid for QT Pro at least three times. In the PC world, this is mostly not true. Upgrades are almost always cheaper than first purchase, even with cheap programs. It's called customer lifetime goodwill and it's a good thing. However, $30 is about the psychological limit for me on little tools like this. I did buy it, so long ago I forgot what version I had. At first glanc, visual hub looks worthwhile on the Mac and I think it's similar price. It works very well for me and does FLV as some have mentioned here. /r

[videoblogging] Looking for podcasters to hang out with on 365 day trip
Hi Everyone! I am a fellow podcaster, my husband and I are planning a trip around the country starting in November. We would like to meet up with podcasters in each city. I hope some of you will be interested. The press release is below. Please email me direct at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks, Amy 365 Day Election Year Road Trip Hits All 50 States A Gen X couple has announced plans to spend a full year traveling across America to cover the 2008 election, see the country, and find a new home. Shane and Amy Bugbee have been entrepreneurs for their entire marriage. Their last venture was a soda pop company, and a website that featured the first podcast from the Northwoods tourist town they were living in, but when the people of Ely, Minnesota found out about the couple's other websites/blogs and their past as controversial writers, publishers, and promoters the town decided the couple was no longer welcome. After leaving Ely (in the middle of the night) the couple travelled through California hoping to find work and a place to call home. What they found instead was hard times, but not just for themselves. Nearly every person they encountered was broke, friends with businesses were going out of business or downsizing, and others were losing jobs, sharing apartments, a few even wound up living in their cars. Rather than face this fate themselves, they headed to Chicago to visit family and regroup. On the way they decided if they were going to be broke, they were going to find out why. The pair will set out on November 4th, 2007 to drive around the country for an entire year, documenting their findings on the web with podcasts, videocasts, blogs, and photos. They will talk to people in every state, and especially in the zip codes that most people don't venture, they will see the sites, taste the local flavor, ad cover the election. Re: [videoblogging] Need help in comparing external (shotgun) microphones
I don't know about the Audio Technica but I was thinking of getting a Sennheiser ME 66 which I've used before and gotten really great results. It pretty expensive, needs extensions to get out of the shot on a small camera and an adapter to plug in. So I gave the Rode Video Mic a shot and so for I'm pretty happy with it and my new Canon HV20. It looks like what you get for the extra $100 is a shock mount and a mini plug which are things you'll want/need for hooking up to your camera. My one complaint is that the battery on the HV20 is loose enough to make noise when hand holding the camera. I think I'm going to have to resort to using a piece of tape to hold it still. - Verdi On 7/12/07, Heath [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I searched through the list and have asked a few people but I am looking for some real world advice here. [videoblogging] Re: Hey PodTech - What's up with Lan's image?
No it doesn't meet any criteria at all for fair use. From http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html: ... The 1961 Report of the Register of Copyrights on the General Revision of the U.S. Copyright Law cites examples of activities that courts have regarded as fair use: quotation of excerpts in a review or criticism for purposes of illustration or comment; quotation of short passages in a scholarly or technical work, for illustration or clarification of the author's observations; use in a parody of some of the content of the work parodied; summary of an address or article, with brief quotations, in a news report; reproduction by a library of a portion of a work to replace part of a damaged copy; reproduction by a teacher or student of a small part of a work to illustrate a lesson; reproduction of a work in legislative or judicial proceedings or reports; incidental and fortuitous reproduction, in a newsreel or broadcast, of a work located in the scene of an event being reported. Copyright protects the particular way an author has expressed himself; it does not extend to any ideas, systems, or factual information conveyed in the work. The safest course is always to get permission from the copyright owner before using copyrighted material. The Copyright Office cannot give this permission. When it is impracticable to obtain permission, use of copyrighted material should be avoided unless the doctrine of fair use would clearly apply to the situation. Re: [videoblogging] Re: got any Xacti example vids?
Hi Ry: Your review was fantastic! I was so impressed I blogged about it because I know many people would love a rugged waterproof video and still camera. I have a question though about the resolution: According to the info on this page, it produces 6-megapixel digital still images, but on the full specs pagehttp://www.sanyodigital.com/ specifications.aspx?v=1, it lists 10 megapixel stills as one of the options. It reads: Still shots: 10M: 3680x2760, which equals 10,156,800 (just over 10 megapixels). I'm curious if 10MP is an option. There could be some internal interpolation. More importantly, I'm curious how good the still shots are at 10MP and at 6MP. The sample shots on their site were fantastic. This could be an ideal still camera for active people. I'm also wondering if you tried a 4GB SD card and if it worked OK. Thanks for any info. Well, while I use the Rode VideoMic and love it, I've heard a lot of good things about the Technica. My issue with the Technica is that it doesnt have a shock mount to absorb any bumps or vibrations. Also, the cable is 3 feet long. You are going to have to wrap that up somehow or have it dangling from the camera when mounted on cam. My only advice is to find a brick and mortar that has both mics in stock and bring your camera in to test them out. [videoblogging] Recommended Settings For Upload???
Wise list. I'm working up some guidelines for blip.tv's recommended settings for making an original upload version, mostly with QT. I'm heavily copying JetSet's and Apple TV. I'd love to have your thoughts or settings for services such as blip.tv that do not alter your original upload and work with the beginnings of hi res living room tech like Apple TV. My draft Format = QuickTime Extension = .mov CODEC = h.264 baby! Size = 640 pixels wide. Height depends on your favored aspect ratio. 16:9 = 640x360. 4:3=640x480. Deinterlace no matter what? sometimes makes it worse Audio = AAC audio, 48kHz. Render settings = Best. Target bit rate = 128+. Mono or stereo depending on mic used to record. Key frame interval = 5. Or up to 24, or auto. Lower is better. Frame rate: Current Frame Controls: Off (or on to deinterlace using progressive?) Multi-pass: On Frame reorder: On Data rate: 2.000 (Mbps). Higher better. Fast Start: On Other Formats Don't forget a original resolution master for every episode. Windows Media Player (.wmv) version if you can to give people choices on a PC. a href=http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/moviemaker/create/saveforweb.mspx; Movie Maker Export Settings/a. iPod version: .m4v version for iPods using QuickTime's iPod settings. [videoblogging] Re: Backing up data for Mac/StudioMX/ pesswords, keychains? Any thing else?
Thanks all. I ran out of time trying to resolve the problems before FedEX came. I will use Carbon Copy to avoid this in the future. Some of the backups (on either a external drive or to disk) I made in the past are okay, others look like either the file is no good or the drives cannot read the disk and eject them. I was able to make a disk image of the Mac Mini using the network cables, the firewire port would not let me start up in Target disk mode. After I used the Disk utility to erase the HD, I tried to use disk utility to restore from a disk image but the image is greyed out and cannot be selected. Anyone have this problem? Does that sound like the image is corrupted? Thanks again --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, bordercollieaustralianshepherd [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Transitioning from a PPC to a Intel Mac... The Mac I am returning is a PPC and the replacement is a Intel. Tips, tricks, or any advice to avoid data loss? Long time ago I switched from OS 9 to a new Mac with Panther or the first Tiger OS. When I set my Studio MX back up I had lost a lot of the details, (sign in to server, folder locations). Many of my videos were also corrupted or unable to play. I just did a search for {macromedia + studio + MX + backup + data} but not finding what I think I need. Is there a better search term? Or what (application specific support data?) files do I need to pay special attention to? Last question after this explaination - I also coppied my entire User folder, the Hard drive's System and Library folder to a external HD. However not all data would copy and I have no idea which files. The messege that I got was along the lines of the file cannot be copied I do not have the privilage. I was in Admin and had to enter the authorization password, it just did not allow some files to be copied. I recieved three of those alerts. Maybe they are locked? Because I cannot start up from system disks is this normal, that is, some files are in use and could not be copied for that reason? Or is this a wrinkle with the logic board acting hinky?
[videoblogging] external mikes MacBook Pros
Me too on the RODE video mike/Canon HV20 combo. Although the first few times used the video mike I had to remember to TURN IT ON. Plugged into the mike input plus not turned on = no audio. Doh! Also, it's kinda conspicuous, in an I got asked to leave the hardware super store sort of way. So, with it, you're going to me more conspicuous if you like filming in places that sometimes don't want you filming. And yes, the Canon battery is annoyingly loose. I have/swear by a MacBook Pro (the smaller size). For something like Final Cut more screen size would be nice, but it's workable. Also, it's so beautifully designed (and I'm no Mac zealot at all) that once one of the fans on it started making an annoying, audible whirr, it was like hearing a supermodel fart. I've got used to it, and I suspect it may be a not-unusual-occurrence. Curse them for making me fall in love with it, then having it behave all mere-mortal on me. This just in, everybody poops. Even Steve Jobs. ALso, if you plan on editing HD footage, and don't want to lug an external drive about with you everywhere, get the biggest hard drive they offer and plan on putting a bigger one in later. I've yet to schedule that operation, but if you're ever likely to have more than some short vlog footage captured... you're going to need a bigger boat. Or am I wrong here? [videoblogging] Re: Hey PodTech - What's up with Lan's image?
Hello Lan and everyone here on this thread. This sort of transparent hashing out of a business matter on line shows that there is some growing up to do with the new media. Lan, I appreciate your work, and am sorry that your photo was used without permission. It seems to me that Podtech had apologized and made a reasonable offer. I would accept it gracefully and move on. Your photo wasn't being used in a worldwide ad campaign. I understand that it was on a display at a convention attended by many of your peers. It wasn't your face plastered on a billboard, a redubbing of your video for a 900 sex number, your face on a lunchbox, or potato chips with your image on them. This happens too, by the way. I can tell you from personal experience. There is plenty of work for everyone to do without wasting energy on this. Settle, move on, make video, be happy. When you do that, you make me happy. I like your work as a media producer. Let's leave the lawyering to the lawyers, and get creative.
Re: [videoblogging] Re: Hey PodTech - What's up with Lan's image?
Hi Daniel, I'm sorry to boringly stand up for the thread again, but I just feel that you're not quite on the money in what you say. Also, the way I read it, I found your tone was a little patronising. I know plenty of Old Business where things are hashed out in public by observers - the idea that we need to grow up instead of talking about the rights and wrongs of the issue has raised my hackles. And I'm sorry that this has been going on so long that people feel they need to be the voice of reason and try to stop it. I don't particularly think that people have been out of line or lynchmobbish in the way it's been discussed. I think almost everyone has handled it quite well. Lan is not the one bringing this up and keeping it bubbling. It's the rest of us, who are concerned about what Podtech did and the way they've behaved since. In the book The Cult of the Amateur http://ajkeen.com/e.htm , Andrew Keen basically trashes 'Web 2.0'. Excerpt here http://ajkeen.com/e.htm . Here is a quote from the book: The Web 2.0 revolution has peddled the promise of bringing more truth to more people- more depth of information, more global perspective, more unbiased opinion from dispassionate observers. But this is all a smoke screen. What the Web 2.0 revolution has really delivering is superficial observation of the world around us rather than deep analysis, shrill opinion rather than considered judgment. The information business is being transformed by the Internet into sheer noise of a hundred million bloggers all simultaneously talking about themselves. [videoblogging] Need a feed emailer that acts like an autoresponder - suggestions?
I send out emails weekly to my list. I'm using an autoresponder service offered through 1shoppingcart. A person signs up, they get an automatic email saying Welcome and then every week, I send out an email with updates. What I'd like to do is have people subscribe - not to some generic email list - but to my blog/podcast feed. That way, instead of sending emails to 2 or 3 different lists, I can just have everyone sign up to my feed. And as I update my blog or podcast, an email goes out weekly with a list of new stuff posted on my blog. I'm using Feedburner right now and I have a couple hundred subscribed, but the features are limited. I can't modify the email template so it matches my branding. Also, I can't create a welcome email that goes out automatically once the person signs up. So, any feed emailing services out there I can use that allows me to: 1. Create an email message that would be independent of the posts that appear on my blog (eg. a welcome email) 2. Modify the template so it matches my branding. Re: [videoblogging] The Cult of the Amateur
The Web 2.0 revolution has peddled the promise of bringing more truth to more people- more depth of information, more global perspective, more unbiased opinion from dispassionate observers. But this is all a smoke screen. What the Web 2.0 revolution has really delivering is superficial observation of the world around us rather than deep analysis, shrill opinion rather than considered judgment. The information business is being transformed by the Internet into sheer noise of a hundred million bloggers all simultaneously talking about themselves. hahahahahahaha yeah, as T.Whid says, Andrew Keen is a troll. Think of Ann Coulter. Clay Shirky does a great job bringing sanity and perspective to his arguments. http://www.boingboing.net/2007/07/09/shirky_explains_why_.html The internet's output is data, but its product is freedom, lots and lots of freedom. Freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of association, the freedom of an unprecedented number of people to say absolutely anything they like at any time, with the reasonable expectation that those utterances will be globally available, broadly discoverable at no cost, and preserved for far longer than most utterances are, and possibly forever. Keen is right in understanding that this massive supply-side shock to freedom will destabilize and in some cases destroy a number of older social institutions. He is wrong in believing that there is some third way — lets deploy the internet, but not use it to increase the freedom of amateurs to do as they like. Jay Yahoo! [videoblogging] Movie Maker on Vista
Hey ya'll, I've got someone who sent in a question to Freevlog about Windows Vista that I'm hoping someone can help me answer. Apparently when you export your video and make it into a wmv, the menu choices have changed. What's a good setting? They say they can only see these choices when selecting more choices for codecs and bit rates: DV-AVI(NTSC) Windows Media Portable Device (1.0 Mbps) Windows Media DVD Quality (3.0 Mbps) Windows Media DVD Widescreen Quality (3.0 Mbps) Windows Media Low Bandwith (117 kbps) Windows Media VHS Quality (1.0 Mbps) Shouldn't there be more choices? Re: [videoblogging] The Cult of the Amateur
Though Keen's book was filled with hyperbolic statements, there are parts of his argument that I do agree with-- heck, without this group knowing, this group agrees with it in parts. Or don't folks remember how up in arms you were over the wikipedia entry on videoblogging? His point of mass creation of definitions on wikipedia, with those who actually study a certain field on the same meeting ground as everyone else, creates new definitions that get embroiled in egotism and just plain ignorance. Heck, some people feel that their personal videos should be a part of the wikipedia entry on videoblogging I also agree on his point of being wary of having a generation of Internet Addicts. People who spend so much time connecting online, that they dont know how to even connect with their neighbor... I had an interesting discussion with Kent Bye and Jen about it last month... it's one of the (many) reasons that I severely limit my online time after business hours and on the weekends; so I spend more time connecting with the physical world. Heck, people now say I'm going off the grid! acting like its a miracle... I am not off the grid, I'm engaged in the physical present...which can still contain the web. Web2.0, and the web in general, is very seductive for a variety of reasons. The power of the individual voice is just one of many. The ease to create giant mobs of angry people attacking businesses is another. But yes, 80% of his book was crap, but it was a great quick read! Well worth talking about over a beer. ramble out! We're all eager to believe (I think) that this was a simple oversight on PodTechs part ... we're not (I don't think) trying to burn them at the stake for making a mistake ... but rather set some reasonable community expectations as to how such mistakes should be addressed/handled/settled going forward ... and having such issues drag out for SO LONG only to be left with a bottom line of look, Mr Independent producer, we're going to set the price for your media we already stole and used isn't really gonna cut it. You get to negotiate a price be if you do so BEFORE yo use it otherwise you (the guy who stole the content) SETTLE for a price. Pod tech needs to settle this and do right by Lan ... not the other way around. That doesn't mean they have to pay $3k (and Lan has already said he has been attempting to negotiate and sent multiple quotes) ... but they need to find a number that is MUTUALLY agreeable with the content producer. Hopefully they'll work it out and Lan will be able to report that behind the scenes they reached a settlement and he is happy with the result ... but until he can say that, a community that PodTech hopes to court has an understandable concern. And Lan has been pretty quiet on this all things considered. Its the rest of us that wont let it be :-P - Dave -- http://www.DavidMeade.com [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Dan, respectfully I suggest you put on a expensive suit and visit http://the-late-nite- mash.blip.tv/file/110536 for a little attitude adjustment. In all seriousness though, I think that transparancy is missing in MSM and I welcome it in new media, especially in cases like this. Blogs and alternative news outlets were the only places where, in the run up to the Iraq invasion, people questioned the claims made to justify the war. Big difference granted. Consider the next time you are depicted on a potato chip (or anything else) without your blessing. I don't want you to hesitate asking for others to chime in if it is justified. I am guessing you are a member of SAG. You don't have to haggle with late paying clients. Or if green MM's are in your trailer when your contract's rider specifically states NO GREEN MMS. SAG is your stickman, your posse, they got your back. I got your back as a member of this group. I bet a lot of folks here would take up a justified cause in order to assist in resolving a problem. Democracy. Safety in numbers. Mob rule. Of the three I 'd say the first two apply here. Let's leave the lawyering to the lawyers, and get creative. Lawyers are or should be the last resort. No one wins when it gets to the point of hiring the suits to file suite. Except the suit that can then afford a little Miss Slap and Mistress Tickle. I really think that unless it is already been shot down, it my be time to get MORE organized. http://adage.com/article?article_id=119152 Of course, whether those outlets will be willing to deal with a company that gives artists greater ownership over their intellectual property (as well as participation in revenue streams like advertising) is an open question. But if major stars can be persuaded to fool around online for fun and profit, 60Frames may well be a potent force for change in Hollywood. The union question Also unclear is how Hollywood's labor unions will react. Efforts by the Screen Actors Guild and Hollywood's agents to salvage a six-decade-old master franchise agreement fell short in 2002, meaning that agencies could potentially invest in production companies -- previously a verboten practice for agents. (United Talent Agency, for its part, declined to disclose its exact stake in the new venture, and was careful to call 60Frames a financing entity and not a production company.) And here is where I end my contribution to this thread. Peace of the pi(p)e pale face.

[videoblogging] Re: Movie Maker on Vista
Michael, I just checked and the answer is yes and no. I am betting the person has Vista Basic. If that is the case those are the only options. If they have Premium or Ultimate they should get the HD options as well. They don't give you an option for mpg, any type. So if they want something other than avi or wmv they are going to have to get a free ware app or pay for a 'real video editing' program. If I remember correctly this was the same with the previous version of Windows movie maker. Hope that helps Heath http://batmangeek.com --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Michael Verdi [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hey ya'll, I've got someone who sent in a question to Freevlog about Windows Vista that I'm hoping someone can help me answer. [videoblogging] +Re: The Cult of the Amateur
Andrew Keen may be a shrewd opportunist, catering to the fearmongers who live in terror of socialized media destroying their ivory towers, but Schlomo's right when he points out that we on this list still aspire to some kind of meritocracy -- even if we view that meritocracy in completely different terms than Keen. As I mentioned on a panel at Blogference in Tel Aviv last week, it's become evident from the democratization of social media that Hollywood wasn't exactly barring millions of geniuses at the gates. For every Tiki Bar TV, Ask a Ninja or Rocketboom, who work for a specific audience, there are hundreds of thousands of videos that are 100% mediocrity in motion. This isn't surprising, since the average human being is better equipped to regurgitate what he or she has previously experienced than to innovate drastically -- the sum of history should be proof enough -- but what IS surprising is when some of us, who are expecting a revolution from the social media sphere, rally to the defense of this mediocrity. Like Keen, I'm appalled by the tidal wave of trash that passes for web media. Like Schlomo, I'm sure most of YOU are appalled by it to. Where we diverge from Keen is in believing that the diamonds in this new rough, and the likelihood that the rough will improve over time, justifies its existence in the first place. If Keen had his way, the gates would be locked permanently. If we have our way, the quality of what comes THROUGH those gates will continue to steadily improve and render this entire argument meaningless. Onward and upward.
