[videoblogging] My New Year trip at the Kansai area (Part 1)

2009-01-06 Thread Edmund Yeo
Been a while since I posted here. I'll just shamelessly plug a
videoblog I uploaded yesterday of my recent trip at the Kansai area
for my new year countdown. (BTW, I'm Malaysian, but moved to Tokyo
last April)

I was gone for only two nights, first day spent at Kyoto and Nara,
then the second day spent at Osaka and Kobe. I've decided to split the
videos to two parts for ah, narrative and dramatic purposes. So here
you go:

http://swiftywriting.blogspot.com/2009/01/video-my-new-year-trip-at-kansai-region.html
(you can choose to view it either on Youtube or Facebook, I embedded both)

Would love to hear from you guys.

Well, I'll get back to editing part 2 now.

2006-12-20 Thread Edmund Yeo
It's not unreasonable, yeah, just that having a panic button does make
people more vulnerable to pranks.

Like Whe, I found Britney's Myspace page, now I shall press the
'panic button'... once every single hour!

Reading through the messages here, it kinda occurred to me some rather
major kind of cultural differences we had. Over here in Asia, or to be
precise, South East Asia, in Malaysia, or Singapore, it's not uncommon
to have children living with their parents even if they were married
(in fact, it seems even more convenient since, well, the little kids
can be looked after by their grandparents, yay!). 'Failure To Launch'
is a concept somewhat foreign to us, moving away from parents is more
a choice than a necessity.

Sorry, just some random thoughts.

[videoblogging] Hello again! I shall reintroduce myself!

2006-12-13 Thread Edmund Yeo
Hola all,

Been a while since I last posted (could be 9-10 months), since i
barely made an impression, I doubt most peeps remember me.

Anyway, I'm Edmund Yeo, who constantly brags to be the first Malaysian
to ever sign up on Vlogmap.org, struggling writer filmmaker, even more
struggling vlogger. Been spending most of my time in the past two and
a half years in Perth, Australia, but had finally finished my studies
(and even managed to score a few nominations for my last two short
films, YES! ... unfortunately, I didn't win at all... NO!!!)

Due to the insanely active nature of this mailing list, I've always
been incapable of really following the topics here, besides, since the
majority of events mentioned here (that I've read) seem to relate more
to the community of US vloggers, er, it's hard for me not to feel out
of place (I haven't met a Perth vlogger during my stay there). Thus,
due to my shy and introspective nature, I couldn't involve myself in
the discussions here. (or course, that's just an excuse, I probably
sucked) Ah, the loneliness of being an outsider!

So, yeap, just saying hi. And also shamelessly plug a video I've made
today that I shot during my last day in Perth on the 5th of December
(I've since returned to Malaysia). Just me declaring the end of a
chapter in my life:

http://tinyurl.com/yzuem3

Well, I'll be posting some videos shot in Malaysia to those who are
actually interested in this humble and tiny country of mine in the
near future.

See y'all.

I'll be back. Soon. Yeap.

[videoblogging] Re: Introverts and Extroverts

2006-02-10 Thread Edmund Yeo
I think I'm an extroverted introvert. I mean, as much as I'm okay when
it comes to mingling with people, and can seem not to stop at all when
speaking, I pretty much enjoyed moments of solitude and isolation to
do my own stuff.

And I prefer being behind the camera. But despite thus, I am forced to
be in front of the camera all the time, and the roles I have in my own
short films usually end with me... dying.

An introvert is someone who is re-energized by being alone, but when

An extrovert is the opposite: energized in the presence of others, but
drained after a weekend in isolation.

Most people are somewhere in the middle. Note that this has nothing to
do with shyness or stage fright/stage presence.

I would like the lurkers to respond, too, if you all don't mind (since
otherwise the results will naturally be skewed towards the extroverts,
introverts being more likely to lurk on forums). Where do you put

Meiers-Brigg personality test, you pretty much know already]. And if
you're willing to mention it, where is your videoblog?

I'm interested to know if there's a higher percentage of one

[videoblogging] Re: Introverts and Extroverts

2006-02-10 Thread Edmund Yeo
Well, it really depends. Usually, I'm fine with being with a large
group of people who don't actually bore me. And once being with people
like that, I can feel pretty energized and ah, recharged.

But people who bore me will make me end up feeling empty, and I would
probably just walk off after feeling rather uncomfortable.

Er, although I do have to say that I do get bored rather easily. There
are times when I would think of something like bah, why the hell am I
wasting my time with them when I can just stay home and do something
more productive

Maybe that's just my massive ego speaking. Hmm. I guess I'm just kinda
mercurial.

either activity (and everyone needs some alone time as well as time
with people)-- it's a matter of which one makes you feel more
energized and recharged emotionally, mentally, spiritually.

My guess, based on what you said, is that you're close to the middle,
more towards the introvert side, but that you're not shy, which makes
a difference in how you perceive your own introvert/extrovert self.

You can't really expect the whole thing to be entirely accurate.

[videoblogging] Re: Difficult choices to get viewers

2006-02-03 Thread Edmund Yeo
Yeah, I know how it feels. I mean, I usually average a couple of
hundred hits for my blog, but whenever I put up a vlog entry, my
traffic ends up plunging.

Sometimes, I think it has to do with the fact that Malaysia isn't
really ready for vlogging. After all, in Malaysia, the popular blogs
are the personal ones, and most have yet to really regard blogs as a
media, and not just an online diary.

Obviously, putting my effort into shooting and editing videos is much
tiring than writing something up. But when a vlog entry is barely
getting more than ten views, and not even getting a comment, while my
written entries are the one most people are reading (and commenting),
it's impossible for me NOT to focus more on writing than vlogging.
(despite my lofty claim of being Malaysia's FIRST vlogger + Malaysia's
most prolific vlogger + Malaysia's most beloved vlogger... I have a
huge ego)

So it's a price I have to pay, I guess, vlog entries can't be the only
thing featured in my blog, I can use them to, ah, show off, or add
some variety to it, but once again, I don't think Malaysia (and many
other places) is that ready for vlogging.

But then, one have to admit that the process of downloading a video
and then sitting back to watch it (or waiting for it to stream) takes
much longer than just reading some written stuff.

The most depressing thing in the world is to do a great vlog and get
only a few viewers.(Surviving AIDS, Preserving Art 12 views three
days, four of which were probably me). http://www.blip.tv/file/12329

This can be overcome with cleverly worded titles. I knew the
mainly male world of vloggers wouldn't be interested in Males au
Naturel so I titled my interview with them as Nudists Only!.
http://www.blip.tv/file/12223

That worked and I was number one at Blip.TV (my favorite) nearly all
day long. At the end of the day, I had over a hundred views. Realities
of life can be depressing.

I had some footage of the first public rally/demonstration/march by
transgendered people. I did four vlogs. The ones I titled in a tame
and rational way: Mother of Transie House: A Social Pioneer
http://www.blip.tv/file/12432 ; Sylvia Rivera Law Project
http://www.blip.tv/file/12434 ; and Transsexual and Rev. Mother
http://www.blip.tv/file/12491 ; did poorly.

So, I decided to use view bait and titled another one
Transsexuals in Action http://www.blip.tv/file/12486 . It consisted
of two stirring speeches by transgendered activist at their rally last
June. Nothing really sexual or hot.

The vlog bait worked it's magic and Transsexuals in Action was
on the most watched list at Blip most of the day.

Not everyone, including transgendered activists who appeared in this
vlog, were happy with the title. They criticized it for being lurid.

I tried to explain that vloggers were like magazine publishers and
newspaper editors competing in a world of thousands of vlogs and
fighting for every view.

I've avoid YouTube because of their policy of censorship and also of
their policy of owning your video after you post it there.

I decided to take the plunge and put video on YouTube I'd probably
never want to use in any commercial venture, just stuff with
interesting social messages.

I chose to use the luridly titled Transsexuals in Action. I
figured it would just be a test.

Amazingly, I got more views in an hour on You Tube than I had gotten
on Blip.TV in a day--even if I had sacrificed my rights to the footage.

I even got a comment within minutes of posting that reflected the
attitudes I suspected YouTube types to harbor:
 First comment went as follows:

[videoblogging] Re: Slashdot on videoblogging again

2005-12-28 Thread Edmund Yeo
Ah! I was just going to post this too!

Well, talking heads ARE kinda boring, actually, especially when the
video itself is too long. I mean, if you're a fast reader, you know
that the whole thing would've been so much easier if it was written
instead of being a video which you have to sit through for ages.

Hence why I'd rather slap together home videos/real-life videos I have
shot and edited and post it on my blog, along with short text
commentary, instead of having videos of me speaking directly to the
camera. But then, it had more to do with the fact that I, ah,
seriously don't like my recorded voice, it just sounds too much
different compared to my usual sultry and silky and also very
melodious voice. Hah!

Ah! It happens to you too! Uh oh, I shall see whether I'll have any
luck after I've installed Vegas6. (I have just acquired it via
questionable means)

Im not entirely testing it on video ipod though, just want to know how
much it can compress my vids.

I've got Vegas6 and it still doesn't seem to find the QT7 (or vice
versa), but it
does have some mp4/AAC options, but I haven't tested them on
a video ipod as yet. I suspect they are PSP compatible.

 joly

Tried re-installing QT over and over again and I still had no luck. So
I assume that maybe my QT is too new for my Sony Vegas? (It's a
version 5, I'm using QT7) Thus the instability and weirdness?

Going to get Vegas 6 to see whether this is still happening.

... or maybe my comp is just messed up.

at download.com, maybe you could do a little hunting about before you
pay $30 or £20 for the privilage of using quicktime pro.

 Paul

Yeap, I'm downloading some free compressors now. Hope they work well
enough.

$30 is way TOO steep for me.

(After conversion, it's 110+ Malaysian ringgit)

[videoblogging] AHA! NOW I MIGHT know why MP4 remains elusive.

2005-12-27 Thread Edmund Yeo
Things had been pretty insane lately. Despite being able to use Sony
Vegas to render my latest video into a .mov file last night for my
latest a
href=http://swiftywriting.blogspot.com/2005/12/swiftys-video-blog-entry-china_28.html;entry/a,
it just didn't work today. Sony Vegas told me that I didn't have
Quicktime installed properly, and all of a sudden, I couldn't render
.mov files AT ALL.

I don't understand what's wrong here. You have Premiere Pro and

how you made a .mov file.
Okay - .mov can have any one of a jillion codecs in it. MPEG4 is one
 choice.
Check out the tutorials on Freevlog:
 http://freevlog.org/#compress
These should do it unless you want you file to be compatible with the
iPod. For that you'll need QT Pro so that you can access the AAC
audio codec that the iPod requires.

Thanks. Well, I dunno, I'm going to install Avid Xpress and Vegas 6
and see whether I can convert it with them. *sigh*

I figured this was the only way I could help you be less annoyed at
the mp4 standards on the PSP and iPod video... I have this iSquint
thing... but it's mac only and still in beta... I think it only works
in 10.4 because it keeps throwing me applescript errors. For my own
videos I'd just use Quicktime Pro. It's actually pretty damn good.

 Peace,

I am soo going to lie and cheat my way into getting a Quicktime Pro.

See the compression tutorial on FreeVlog.org. That gives good results.

[videoblogging] Hola! New member from Malaysia!

2005-12-25 Thread Edmund Yeo
Heya all! New member here!

I'm Edmund Yeo from Malaysia, have just added my videoblog (although
my blog ain't solely about videos...) at the Vlog Map and realized
that I'm actually the very first Malaysian vlogger there! Awesome!

I didn't actually integrate videos into my blog until early October
(it was just a random personal blog before that with my personal
rants, film reviews, webcomics and stuff). Mostly home videos I've
edited that I want to share with my readers.

So yeah, I'm rather new and totally oblivious to the entire
vlogosphere business. But I think I'll be putting up more videos in
the future. I'm currently editing a series of videos I've shot during
my two-week vacation in China (I just returned from Shanghai three
nights ago).

Not much, just wanted to say hello to you guys and introduce myself.
Feel free to ask me stuff if you want to. :D

Ta!

[videoblogging] MPEG4?

2005-12-25 Thread Edmund Yeo
I was wondering, what software is used to create MPEG4 files?

Usually, I would edit my videos with either Adobe Premiere Pro or Sony
Vegas and then render them into MPEG2 files (for myself) and .mov/wmv
files (for my blog), but as you all know, the latter two are pretty
bad (TOO MURKY!), so I thought MPEG4 would be a preferable alternative
(... I don't think they take up too much space, right?).

Help?
