We've mentioned rumors before, but here it is:

An HTML5 video player will allow videos to be viewed without Adobe's
Flashplayer plug-in, videos will load faster and developers will be
 able to
build all kinds of other intriguing features into a media delivery
 scheme
based on the next version of HTML.
For now users will need to sign-up the HTML5 preview on Test Tube and
they'll need to be using either Chrome, Safari or the Chrome frame in
 IE.

The biggest benefit of HTML5 support is that it frees users from the
 need
to use proprietary plug-ins like Flash player or Microsoft's
 Silverlight by
using a simple bit of code to render video. (Note this caveat regarding
 the
lack of codec consensus, however.) If you've used Google's Chrome much,
you've probably seen how often Flash player crashes in that browser.
 Firefox
doesn't deal with Flash well, either.

Here's how I understand it: If Google does it right, you wont notice the
difference. Video will be beautiful and lovely online. But for developers
and creators, the options will multiply because we wont be stuck fucking
with the constraints of Flash players.

Flash has helped make watching online video easy. Its done its job,
 thanks.
Now go sit in the corner with Real Audio.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: What Randy mann Said in the Videoconference last night.

2009-09-13 Thread Jan McLaughlin
Great discussion.

Have been working on a digitally-based (and world-based) multi-media
documentary forever.

It keeps shape-shifting, etc., but definitely want it to exist as a
documentary motion picture.

Here it is, so far:

http://depressionstrategies.blogspot.com/2008/12/worlds-longest-open-love-letter.html

Using Blip.tv's show player to drag and drop vlog entries around, in and
out. It's at a point where I need more brains involved. That stopped me.
When I had some money, spent it on an editor / blogger / cinematographer
(thanks @Quirk).

Stopped for work and frustration at where to go. It will begin eventually.
Probably in January when the work dries up.

It's really fucking difficult.

the other side of this of course is that some do both, but that one

the web as most of the 2.0 stuff shows, is ideal for serial practice/
production, small pieces, loose connections. about networks, joins,
pathways and bite sized up to snack sized. this can and should work
really well in doco, but as noted in some of the comments, a lot of
doco practice is still about much larger scale works. So for me the
 questions are:

 1. what would a web native video doc be? (Seth Keen is answering this
 one way, Florian Thalhofer another.)
 2. how might this be combined with trad. doco?
 3. blogs are already documentary, so what needs to change (in us or
the maker) to think of it more formerly as documentary in the video
 mode?

 1. Take your camera everywhere you go.

 2. Use it any time – day and night.

 3. Lomography is not an interference in your life, but part of it.

 4. Try the shot from the hip.

 5. Approach the objects of your Lomographic desire as close as
 possible.

 6. Don’t think. (William Firebrace)

 7. Be fast.

 8. You don’t have to know beforehand what you captured on film.

 9. Afterwards either.

 10. Don’t worry about any rules.

 Hi guys
 First post on the group.
I've got a video blog here about Electronics Engineering:
 http://www.alternatezone.com/eevblog/
Not something most people are into, but I have a niche audience of
 500+ regulars.

I'm new to video blogging so I'm after constructive comments on the
quality of my blog, the tools and techniques I use etc.
Blog #22 is the one to watch, it's where I talk about my blogging
 experience so far.

I use Wordpress on my own website, with the iTunes plugin and use
Feedburner to generate the iTunes version.
I host the low res 320x240 (500Kb/s) MP4 on my website (about 45MB
each episode), but I figure this is not a practical long term solution
 if I get more popular.

The high res version (640x480 2000Kb/s) I upload to my Youtube
channel, and I embed the Youtube link into my Wordpress logs. About
 150MB each.

Blogs I limit to 10min each to meet the Youtube limitation.
 Occasionally I'll do a 2 part episode.

I've set up an account on Blip.tv and am thinking of using that for
all my actual hosting, as well as continue to upload to Youtube
because, well, you have to have a presence there. Comments on using
 Blip.tv anyone?

Camera is an old 2nd hand NTSC DV Canon Camcorder with external
shotgun mic. Adequate video I think, but not helped by my dark
workshop lit with two strip fluoro's.

Camera angle and height just happens to be my tripods minimum height
on the bench in front of me. Seems to work well enough.

Editing is done with Ulead VideoStudio 12, but I put minimum effort into
 this.
In fact the whole blog is minimum effort. No script (off-the-cuff as I
promote), and I don't go back and film things to correct issues, so
just pretty much push a short blog out the door every week.

 Any feedback appreciated!

 Thanks
 Dave.

Don't much vlog on the vlog (http://fauxpress.blogspot.com) any more.
Been mostly going through archives to post to Facebook as I reconnect

a bunch of stuff from 80's 90's vhs, 16 and 35mm. Gotta do it, ya
know: keep up with the technology. Don't think most of that group are
hip enough really to dig RSS etc., but FB reaches the masses I

Pretty good results.

Having used a bunch of these services in various applications
(including the live broadcast of 35 and VlogEurope 07), I've stuck
with Mogulus for my own stuff. Not that I do altogether that much
live...

That said, I like that I can easily 'go' live and create a storyboard
that lives on with material around that 'live' work. I like that I can
auto import media via RSS. I like that the vids and their site can be
branded.

That their pro level exists indicates a commitment to scaling the
thing. Should the need arise, it's there. Some comfort in that...

If anyone's interested in playing around with two remote location
producers working back and forth live, I've been looking for someone
to fool around with that interface...let me know off-list.

I'm putting together a project that will hopefully allow people to

Basically just a limited partnership profit-share model.

Robert Croma sent me a great book called My First Movie - interviews
with famous indie filmmakers about making their first features.
The first interview is with the Coen's.
They did this for Blood Simple. Made a trailer, then spent a year
going to see small businessmen in NY and Minnesota, getting them to
invest. They raised $750,000 this way. Just a limited partnership,
with the production company as the general partner.
Apparently it was the way lots of NY horror movies were made in the
80s - they got the idea from Sam Raimi, who funded The Evil Dead this
 way, too.

I figure that if it worked in the 80s, with these two guys travelling
thousands of miles lugging a 35mm projector around from meeting to
meeting, it should be even more possible to do now with an internet
crowdfunding approach (combined with the same old real-world
 presentations to local punters).

Paying an accountant and a lawyer to set up the legal structure and
contract/terms is more costly than bunging up a ChipIn widget,
obviously, and not practical if your budget is very small. With
larger budgets and projects, getting the odd $10 ChipIn isn't going
to cut it - you've got to go out looking for investors. Even if the
majority of them are still only putting in $10, it's an extra
 incentive - this way it's not just a philanthropic donation - there's
actually a (small) chance of a return. And you can help build trust
and interest at the same time with total online transparency in your
 production process and budgeting.

My main shoot for this will be in November - details of the project
 to follow when I'm ready.

I've said before that I think the same thing can happen for anyone's

If you are creating video projects that people care about, they will
 fund it.
You got to hustle just like with anything...but I think it's a great
 alternative to straight up advertising.

Notice that this is more than a Paypal Button on the sidebar.
You must actually create a Pitch with a clear explanation of the
project, who you are, deliverables, a specific monetary goal, and a
 timeframe.

You probably wont get rich doing this, but you'll make the projects
you love and building a body of work.
You'll also know if anyone cares since they'll be putting their money

All right. I'm getting it.

Let's just say - for instance - my dad's one of the top border collie

He's got a lotta knowhow - having studied for years with Grand

That would appeal to your niche, no?

Is THAT what you're talking about?

Jan

[Snip]

Does nobody see what I am seeing here?

If you, as a video producer (shoot, cut, encode) were to hook up with
people like me and create 50 videos for a rabid community like mine,
or more likely 10 videos for me and 10 videos for five other sites
like mine, and sold 200 units on each of them at $1 profit per,
 that's $10K.

I think the key is to get hooked up with people who know their niche
and have a solid community. They can fill you in on what will do well.

I see this as a great hookup for the online video world. It could
immediately create all kinds of strong independent media opportunities.

It could create a new, non-ad-based media market, where only the
passionate play - passionate content creator, the passionate producer/
 curator and the passionate viewer.

I'd really like to see this happen.

Many people on this list videoblog for fun.
Others are creatives trying to create for a living (and also possibly for
 fun).

This post is advice for amateur filmmakers though is equally as pertinent to
 videobloggers.
I'm sure many us us already intuitively understand that the web allows us to
connect directly with the people who watch our work for basically the cost
 of our time.
Instead of relying on some invisible executive to give us the greenlight,
we do what makes sense to us.

Artists starting out in this digitally mediated world have another path
other than stardom, a path made possible by the very technology that creates
the long tail. Instead of trying to reach the narrow and unlikely peaks of
platinum hits, bestseller blockbusters, and celebrity status, they can aim
for direct connection with 1,000 True Fans. It's a much saner destination to
hope for. You make a living instead of a fortune. You are surrounded not by
fad and fashionable infatuation, but by True Fans. And you are much more
 likely to actually arrive there.

 Anyway...keeping making.
 Happy New Year.

 Hi,

Are people interested in having a Vloggercon in 2009?

 I've got an idea.

A Mashup of Conferences? June 24-27 at UMass Amherst

Bill Densmore out at UMass has reserved the campus for June 24-27 for
 a conference.

 'A Mashup of Conferences'
We were talking about calling it something like 'A Mashup of
Conferences' and inviting lots of people to co-host their conferences
 there that weekend.

In 2006 he ran Media Giraffe conference on journalism, MGP2006.

 TOPICS and GROUPS
I'd already thought of the possibility of having a Podcamp Amherst out
 there.

He's going to corral the media and education people.

What do you think about getting a bunch of Social Media people to join
 in?

I'd help in getting multi media/video production people...

Kind of like a pirate ship conference.

In addition to social media, video, podcasting I was also thinking
about Etsy crafts people, moped riders, and photographers, like
 that... a wide range...

Also, it'd be fun to schedule hikes and social events around it too.

Re: [videoblogging] Dropping frames, long firewire?

2008-12-06 Thread Jan McLaughlin
Troubleshoot:

Have you tried the setup with a shorter firewire with the same (or
different) results? If the problem solves itself with shorter firewire, then
some kind of amp in the line may be just the thing. Peter @ Gotham Sound can
probably lend you one for an hour to see if that solves your issue.

Do you have the capacity to run one or both Windows Vegas on the internal
hard drive? if so, try one, the other then both on the internal drive,
see if that solves the issue.

If that doesn't work, try the setup having moved the firewire so it runs
perpendicular as it crosses the power cables. I don't think your cable run
fits the problem you describe - rather, the bad result of such interference
would be electromagnetic 'futz' to the picture and/or audio. That said, I
would run audio / video cables so they make perpendicular crossings of power
cables (and avoiding power cable coils altogether) in any and every event as
a preventative measure.

Better to make a longer electrical run than a longer firewire run...

I'm running a 25' firewire alongside some power and HDMI cables, from my

fast SATAs, one running the software and windows, and one capturing the
media. And all other programs are shut down.

 Questions:
 Is the length an issue?
Is there a possibility of interference from the other cables being next to
 it?
Is there a way around either of these?
Do I need some sort of amplifier for the firewire?

This is probably a question for another forum, but I know a lot of you

showed up and told blip to take down the videos, THAT would be censorship.

Blip has the right to refuse service to anyone, and a business refusing
service is not the same as censorship. A good argument can be made, though,
that in the absence of alternative, equivalent platforms such a thing would
have the same EFFECT as censorship. I think the limiting of access through
private control of speech platforms is a major problem in a
democracy/capitalist hybrid. It can certainly be as chilling as censorship,
and have the same effect on the ability of all to speak freely in an
environment where all can be heard, but it isn't, technically, censorship.

Great news, really.

They begin to 'get it'.

Ha!

Bwah-hahaha.

Yes!

The director of the indie movie I just finished mixing (City Island) is
putting clips from dailies (bloopers such) online on his blog through
YouTube.

http://moviestildawn.blogspot.com/2008/09/city-island-empire-diner-moment.html

The producers had him cease and desist for about a week during production,
but blog comments convinced 'em it was the right thing to do.

One producer at a time...

The director also wants to break his previous movie (Two Family House)
into 10-minute segments and put the whole thing on YouTube - and WILL
eventually. The director definitely gets it.

Re: [videoblogging] Micro wireless

2008-08-28 Thread Jan McLaughlin
Another - possibly more interesting / innovative approach to great
documentary interview sound might be to record double system.

Video 'B-roll' - interesting shots of the subject in situ + separate audio
interview with small mp3 / wav recorder.

Great audio cause you can always easily keep the microphone close.

More interesting video than talking heads would ever-ever-ever give ya.

:)

Costs more in time to edit, less initial dollar and learning curve
investment. Radio and boom mics aren't rocket science, but they hold a lot
of secrets to their success, too.

never matters if they turn their heads and dont face the camera.

The shotgun is great when there are multiple people involved...or we
cant get a wireless mic on the person.
yes, we have a camera that takes XLR, but didnt for a long time.

Ultimately, we just try to find the simplest setup that will give us
good quality, then we focus on what the hell we're recording to make
 sure its interesting to us.

It's been all over the talk show circuit in NYC this week.

Was surprised how the guest on WNYC from the NY Times reported how The Daily
News came down hard on the rider in their articles about the incident. 14
minutes in. Critical Mass was characterized as obnoxious by the Daily News
and the NY Times reporter.

http://www.wnyc.org/shows/bl/episodes/2008/07/30/segments/104759

They talk about a cultural hostility / war between NYPD and Critical Mass.

Sounds like a 'control' thing.

The organized / unorganized nature of Critical Mass is inherently
threatening.

They talk about Critical Mass being a ...Laboratory for police work...

That Critical Mass is fast, mobile, national, and seemingly growing in
numbers power, takes charge of the streets during the course of their
rides, makes law order types justifiably nervous.

Watched some of the archived YouTube footage of previous rides where video /
cell phone cameras are so numerous as to nearly obscure the view of what's
happening. That was a 'wowser' moment.

I found that my websites Jumplive.com, Comet-track.com don't work in
China. I just tried to get to Blip.tv, I get the same error message
timed out. I assume Blip.tv is up, it is being blocked.

My Blogger blogs htp://eclipsechaser.blogspot.com don't work either,
 it is getting blocked.

I really want to use Blip.tv to host my iPod/iTunes video, for an
iTunes video-podcast. What are my options?

 1) use my own server
but I don't get the cool features of Blip.tv

 2) any others?

2008-07-28 Thread Jan McLaughlin
Sounds like you're talking wireless, then.

$600 is not a lot to cover two transmitters, two receivers and two lavs,
unless you find 'em used.

You'll find plenty used these days as certain frequencies in certain areas
are NG. Which makes me think that you should definitely have two very
different blocks of frequencies in your kit. You'll be traveling around, so
you'll need frequency agile transmitter/receivers which have 'blocks' of a
bunch of frequencies to which you can shift if a bunch of freqs are in use
wherever you are.

Let me ask the guys @ the R.A.M.P.S. newsgroup what blocks might best serve
such an international lass as you. Are you mostly traveling to certain
areas, or do you have to be ready for any city / anywhere?

receiver??? Do you want *wireless lavs? If so, do you want both mics
working at the same time? They'll need to be on different freqs. unless you
connect them into one transmitter. But, I don't know the feasibility of
 getting a stereo transmitter / receiver (if so .. it's a lot's more $$$)

Or maybe you meant mixer (for wired lavs)

Re: [videoblogging] Preventing embedded videos from playing automatically on Myspace message boards

2008-07-10 Thread Jan McLaughlin
In a situation like that, I would say calling Mr. Hudack on his cell
might be in order. That is, if it's really a Blip issue - but based
upon what you've described, I don't think it is.

What you describe sounds very strange.

Know there's an autoplay option in Blip's show player configuration
process but can't imagine that even changing that option could cause
autoplay across extant Blip embed code and/or players everywhere.

When you upload to MySpace, those videos aren't hosted @ Blip, but at
MySpace, so deleting the Blip files wouldn't affect how your MySpace
vids autoplayed (or not).

MySpace deleted all the videos I'd embedded in it and I can't for the
life of me figure out how to re-do it.

My best guess is that the problem is with MySpace, not Blip.

Blip's cross-post to MySpace has been broken for a while - since
MySpace altered something-or-other.

MySpace deleted the half dozen or so videos that were on my profile.
Ack. Not very video friendly.

our pottery shop, and the video posts, which were mainly musical
performances, were placed on the sites of musicians who were friends
with the people in the videos. When our videos started playing
automatically, we suddenly were flooded with angry complaints from
musicians that our videos were messing up their pages. AHH!!! We
had inadvertently become Spamers!!!I immediately deleted my videos
from Blip and e-mailed their staff for a solution to this. I also put
out a bulletin in Myspace explaining and apologizing for the problem.
Embedding video can be a great way to build an audience, but this
problem is suddenly making us more enemies than fans. I'm hoping
there might be somebody in the videoblogging community who can toss me

[videoblogging] Fwd: City Island Online || Is vlogging a film to marketing what RSS was to distribution?

2008-07-10 Thread Jan McLaughlin
Just started working on a new film project titled City Island,
written and directed by Raymond Di Felitta and starring Andy Garcia,
Emily Mortimer Alan Arkin.

Got the forwarded email (below) on my return home, along with another
that invites the crew to participate in the blogging / vlogging of the
process of making this fine indie motion picture.

Raymond is a great film history blogger - got lost in his blog for 3
hours the first time I found it. If you like movies, you'll probably
dig Raymond's knowledge style. No surprise he's open to being
transparent about the process.

It will be interesting to see if social networking can have an effect
on how a movie is marketed.

Is vlogging / blogging a film in real time to marketing what RSS was
to distribution? I think it COULD be.

Here's the FaceBook page:

Check it out. See what they will allow the crew to post. See if the
crew will post anything at all.

Re: [videoblogging] Decline in posts to this group.

2008-06-19 Thread Jan McLaughlin
Life gets in the way.

Still make media, but almost exclusively with cellphone: video edited in
camera, stills and audio podcasts. Each kind of media - with the touch of a
button or two - makes it automatically to Twitter, my vlog and its RSS feed.
Wham-bam. Thank you Ma'am.

Mastered editing, etc., and find I just want to make media seamlessly,
without losing my stride.

In the meantime, found this videoblogging community of media-making folks
who ultimately totally replaced the 'celebrities' from other peoples'
fictional stories as people I admired but from an untouchable distance. Even
though I work in the industry. Screw that. Now, am entertained, taught,
saddened, made joyful, and enlightened by those media-making folks - most of
whom I've met, stayed with or stayed with me. Celebrities are part of my
life rather than escape from it.

Videoblogging has added enormous sums to my human wealth.

Scoble said it best and I concur. This was / is a tech space that - as we'd
hoped and dreamed from the beginning - would become obsolete when the tools
caught up to the job at hand. The tools are not quite there (we need better
cellphone cameras for one), but WILL get there. Soon.

What a ride!

Just begin to explore running XP on the MacBook Pro.

Four years ago added a G4 laptop to the PC I'd always used.

The peace of mind of not having to worry about digital intruders, being
awakened in the middle of the night by the PC waking to scan for virus
problems, junk being left on the PC hard drive after uninstalling
programs...

Ease of use...

Elegance.

The PC died over the winter and I'll not be replacing it, especially since I
can run the XP programs purchased through the years on the mac.

Seems like a win-win.

since buying the mac I haven't had to do this, so I've found I prefer
using it and am more productive on it than before when I had a pc. I
can just sit down and start making things so I find it's better for my

and how it's easier for me wrt to music/video/development tools. I'm

to like fixing computers kept up with hardware specs etc but now I'd
much rather just use one. I still have a windows laptop for work and
work on linux/posix systems too so go through the pain at work. but
for home I wouldn't go back to pc now except for maybe a cheaper
storage server desktop/archive system solution as it'd only be used
for file storage perhaps remote access to files, though with cheap
ISP online disk storage options available these days even this is a
stretch. the one I bought originally had a screen problem - I think I
must have bought one of the first batches - and the apple store
support from where I bought it was terrible. eventually I went to
apple australia during a trip home and they arranged a replacement and
since then everything's worked well. they said it's easier to purchase
online rather than the stores as the stores don't have the same
infrastructure they used to for getting things fixed. if I'd known
that at the time I would have bought it online originally like my
first apple product - the ipod. the mac was more expensive but for me
I don't care about that because it's saved more time in me having to
get things to work first go actually getting something creative
done, so was worth the money. over time the difference isn't much. the
only problem I have now is I fill the disk all the time but that's a
user issue not machine. I wish they'd let me use the mac at work
instead of the pc. the best thing I like about OSX ( linux) is that
when you open a few things at once and are working in one screen the
other screens open in background and u can select them when u are
ready. whereas windows pushes everything to the front when it's ready
 - it doesn't care if you're in the middle of typing something in an
already selected window. this annoys me no end on a pc at work!!

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Recommendations for a small camera (Xacti or other) to shoot in India

2008-06-12 Thread Jan McLaughlin
If you could be sure your cell phone will work there, I'd get familiar with
shooting vids on a cell phone.

No internet cafe necessary.

Found in 2005 it was difficult to find an Internet cafe in Amsterdam where I
could actually upload ANYTHING. Free wi-fi was cool and relatively abundant,
but cabling to a computer, not so much. In frustration, put m'self in the
position of the cafe owners and realized that were you able to upload stuff
via cable, assh*le folks could easily upload destructive stuff and there'd
be trouble. So much for THAT option.

That said, on the 2007 trip to Germany, I couldn't get the new cell phone to
work there, so still had to go thru the computer -- wi-fi -- web. Had the
phone worked, that would have been ideal. Guess you have to get a local sim
card or something.

You'd have to have pretty good International and Data plans in place, but,
worth it.

Congratulations and good luck on your trip!

Been there; torn that hair out.

Use your video camera to record the screen and audio.

You'll need to be aware of reflections your screen's not matte and you're
not filming in a dark room, but that was THE solution for me as I was nearly

Good luck :)

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Grad Student Research - Profile of a Video Blogger

2008-06-04 Thread Jan McLaughlin
Most of questions you list could be easily (or not so easily) answered by
combing through a crapload of videoblogs and taking notes, counting,
watching, commenting, etc.

Dr. Hall, did this not used to be called 'research'? I forget.

For example, to answer How long? go to the vlogger's archives and click
the oldest month and there you will find the vlogger's first post.

If you watch sample vlog entries through time, you will get an idea of how
and why they started, what inspires them, and the direction they've gone and
are going.

You will see in black and white how often the vlogger posts.

All that information (and more) is part of vlogging's charm.

 7. How long does it take you to post (from the idea- filming- posting)?
Ideas get written down and thought about. That time varies.

I continue to improve and shorten my processes to give me more time

Re: [videoblogging] virtual interviews workflow/tech advice?

2008-05-16 Thread Jan McLaughlin
The large challenge this type of endeavor presents is getting interview
subjects into the best audio video gear and software possible. A
difficult-to-control issue unless you have one or two packages of web cams
and microphones you can ship around. Even then, there's the software and
setup issue. You gotta have mac and PC capable of each. That is, unless you
ship a pre-configured computer along with the cam and mic.

The way I imagined this happening was to be willing to sacrifice consistency
and quality. In this case, you are able to deal with what ever hard and
software the subjects bring to the table. The interviewer / producer will
have to be familiar with a wide range of possibilities, how to 'read'
subjects' tech savvy-ness, and how to make the best use of even unfamiliar
setups.

All this takes time to test, etc., and a willingness on the part of
interview subjects to install new hard and software, etc.

Presumably your subjects are somewhat geek friendly. If not, then a local
geek-friendly videoblogger contact to personally set it up on your behalf
might be a choice.

From what population do you wish to draw? Are they technical or grandmas who
have only ever used email?

Both Nokia and Dave are running what is basically a videoblogging
competition, and there's not much competition at the moment, so
there's a good chance of you winning.

You don't have to shoot on a phone to win (though it'd probably help).

Films submitted should be 2 minutes long. Subjects should be one of
  the following:

  1. The Best Part Of Today.

  2. The Next Thing That Makes You Smile.

  3. An Act Of Kindness.

  4. The Next Person To Inspire You.

So - not every film will fit, but it's pretty videobloggingy brief.

Closing date is midnight, April 30th.

It's tied into a big event on May 10th called Pangea Day, which is
about 'bringing the world together through the power of film'.

Nokia are sponsoring Pangea Day and using it as a chance to promote
the idea of mobile filmmaking with their phones.

And to promote their new video sharing site Share on Ovi, which they
just launched. They bought Twango and rebranded it.

You can see the 150 or so films that have been submitted so far and
  submit your own at

  http://twango.com/channel/PangeaDay.film

And also post a link at http://davidhowellstudios.com/

Don't just fire and forget your entries if you want views and ratings.
Get involved, leave comments and ratings to get more people watching
your films. I'm trying to kick start conversation involvement there
  - there was none just a week ago. I've had some interesting exchanges
and had lots of views and ratings as a result.

You can see the last thing I submitted at:
  http://www.twango.com/media/PangeaDay.film/ruperthowe.10020
which is in the lead at the moment - uhhh... views, comments and
  ratings appreciated :D

Finalists in the Nokia Awards will be shortlisted by popularity,

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Filmmaker Spike Lee has linked up with Nokia to
direct a movie made with cell phone footage from everyday people in
what he calls the democratization of film.

The film by Nokia Productions will consist of three acts.
An assignment for each act will be announced online and people will
then have four weeks to produce their submission.

You are seeing first hand the democratization of film, Lee said in
a statement on Thursday. Aspiring filmmakers no longer have to go to
film school to make great work. With a simple mobile phone, almost
anyone can now become a filmmaker.

Lee was nominated for an Academy Award for best original screenplay
for Do the Right Thing in 1990 and for best documentary for 4
 Little Girls in 1998.

The film's theme will evolve around the way music tells the story of
humanity, and people can submit text, music, video or images at
certain times between now and August 21 to
 http://www.nokiaproductions.com.

Nokia will choose 25 submissions, then people can vote online for
their favorite for a top 10 from which Spike Lee will then choose the
 winning submission from each act.

Lee will direct the film through the Web site.

The final film with the three winning submissions and other
contributed content will premiere later this year in Los Angeles.

Re: [videoblogging] Re:Good Article on Wireless Mics from BH

2008-04-16 Thread Jan McLaughlin
Reliability of radio mics anywhere has a lot to do with lots of issues,
principally line-of-sight (no - particularly metal - objects between the
transmitter and receiver) and proximity (keep the TX and RX as close as
possible to each other). Another is to know what's 'in' the air in your
area. My particular radio mics don't work well in certain cities, for
example; I had to keep the receivers very close to the subjects for them to
work.

I've been told you may research the area(s) in which you plan to use your
mics before buying / traveling - through the FCC's website, but I found the
user interface abominably unusable. Here's a link to my ongoing collection
of subjects related to things RF: http://del.icio.us/love_detective/rf

What you suggest doing is what is called in the biz double system sound,
but keeping the recorder wired to the microphone and then syncing the sound
later. That will totally work! :) In fact, there's at least one high-end mic
system that records to a micro SD card as well as transmitting RF signal
back to a receiver. If there's an RF hit in the transmission, you may then
copy the RF-hit-free file from the transmitter's SD card to post production
for syncing. The transmitters alone from Zaxcom are currently retailing for
$2K.

Any battery-operated small recorder with a mic input and output to transfer
files to your computer would work as well. The down side is that you don't
have an 'ear' on the material recorded. No way to detect errors as they
happen. You might well do an entire interview and only find out on playback
that there's nothing there, or that the clothing noise is too much.

Lav mic placement - even on the outside of clothing - is as much smoke
mirrors as science, and is learned mostly by trial and the inevitable error.

As far as unidirectional mics are concerned, I did some research and found
only one lav mic that is unidirectional - DPA 4060 - it's like $600. All
other brands are omni-directional. Here's the page where I found that
information: http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/lavs_brockett.html
Indeed, this is a really comprehensive rundown on all the pro lavs on the
market. Specs, pro's, con's, prices, and sample recordings. More than you
want to know.

Sorry this took so long to respond to - it got buried in the 'drafts'
folder.

What did you decide to do?

I read the article and went to research further on reliability of lavalier
mikes. According to a comment of a customer on BH site (under one of the
Sennheiser mike's in $599 category), all wireless mikes, even the most
expensive one costing around $3,000 will have drop-outs of signal when
 used
on the streets of busy cities like NYC and such. So then I thought to
myself, what would be the most reliable approach to capture high quality
audio when it comes to interviewing people on the streets? The idea popped
quickly. Use a Samson Zoom H2 connected to Electrovoice unidirectional
 mike.
Although H2 itself has multiple condenser mikes inside (even surround
sound), none of them are unidirectional. So with this set up there's more
work in post to sync the H2's audio with on-camera mike, but you get
crystal-clear reliable audio without any RF interference or drop-outs. I
haven't yet tested this work flow but I think this hits home.

No, I stand by what I said. Syncing aside...

You can still have good sound in the way described - if not well-synced
sound - and cut away to the B-roll you wisely captured to make it work.

It's sometimes about creatively making something - anything at all - work.

Though I should have said 'any battery-operated digital recorder.'

If you don't have a good recorder you'll be forever trying to sync the

Caution: don't count on a good (or any) internet connection on the day,
have your media downloaded to a computer and a flash drive, too.

The first step in such a process is to find out what options you have at the

Good luck!

Re: [videoblogging] Are women less willing to speak their minds?

2008-04-13 Thread Jan McLaughlin
I think the issue has less to do with the idea that women have 'trouble'
speaking on camera and more to do with the ways 'women' think and interact
about important issues.

'Women' are less culturally inclined to pontificate or embrace the
pugilistic side of the art of conversation. Our interest is in tossing
possibilities, ideas, solutions back and forth in the spirit of cooperation
rather than being found 'right' or 'winning'.

One problem with Moblogic is how the questions are framed. She could
experiment with writing different questions for women - the same subjects,
but approached from a feminine perspective.

The other issue is that folks will speak forever and comfortably about stuff
they're passionate about. My guess? Lots of 'women' (and 'men') aren't
passionate about politics. Politics is by its nature aggressive, competitive
and hierarchical. Those things are certainly outside *my* area of interest
and expertise.

I agree with Heather's essay wholeheartedly. Vlogging - as its commonly
known to middle America through YouTube - involves for the most part
webcam-based single talking heads. Folks pontificating. Conducting
monologues. Dialog is more interesting and 'feminine'. It's feels 'safer'.
And once you start taping 'conversations' it becomes more like film making
than vlogging. It becomes more of a production.

Okay, rambled - er - pontificated - enough.

Great questions. Fun thinking about it.

[videoblogging] Overview of Pro Lav Mics

2008-04-08 Thread Jan McLaughlin
http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/lavs_brockett.html

Dan Brockett's article Includes prices, tech specs, photographs, and audio
files for listening to samples from each in various situations.

In the event you end up shopping for a lavaliere, this article would be a
good place to begin.

Prices range from $179-$600+ but you can find them used for significantly
less if you know what you want.

The thing with used mics is, they may or may not have the connector you
require, so check it out first. When buying new, the seller will wire
whatever connector you wish, usually included in the price. The other thing
to be aware of with used lavs is cable length since in the field they are
often damaged and repaired at the connector, whereupon the cable is
shortened. Make sure there's enough mic cable left to be useful to you.
Another factor is that dirt sweat salts gather in the mic screens, so used
lav mics are likely to sound a bit flat when compared to new. You might want
to delicately clean the screen on purchase.

Someone asked me once if there was a cardioid lav and I said, No. Most are
omni-directional. Apparently there IS a cardioid, and it's specifically
designed to be 'seen' and used in very noisy environments. Were I to
dedicate myself to doing conference interviews regularly, this is the mic
I'd choose.

Happy shopping!

Yeah, Ron, I concur: great post.

Well, well, well...

Cameras = guns.

Based upon states' recent leaps to control 'em, you are onto something,
particularly if these hand-held projectors will be battery-powered.

As you might imagine, find this product extremely exciting news.

Already, images are being projected on sidewalks, floors, walls. Mostly
logos, single words. Slideshows. Graphical.

Narrative structure / storytelling will be affected because people are
deeply resistant to having their audio-space cluttered. Net-net: these
projected motion pictures will inevitably have to work as silent films.

There's both rub and irony that in this beginning of the high tech age, we
return to the silent film.

Perhaps advertisers will have Bluetooth-available audio? Perhaps if the
motion pictures are delivered via the web, one might stream the audio over
one's cell phone. The challenge would be to sync the sound.

I'm on fire with possibility.

Thanks.

Demonize documentation, buy time.

Odd that the article conflates photography with pedophilia in the article's

Hell, the demonization of the interwebs used pedophilia, porn and fears of
