[videoblogging] vlog research - low income/urban

2010-04-03 Thread Lisa Harper
Hi, I'm researching a topic that has to do with encouraging kids from
low income and/or urban landscapes to express themselves with video.
This could be both singly or as part of an educational program. I
vaguely remember a few years ago a number of interesting projects that
focused on videoblogging from both within the US and also less
developed nations. Can anyone point to such projects/sites -- or does
anyone know how successful such efforts have been? I'm imaging that a
significant challenge would be funding such an effort and also giving
access to cameras and editing software to the kids.

2010-04-03 Thread Lisa Harper
Very helpful pointers, Gena and Jay.

I'm a bit embarrassed to say this is research for a final project in an
information architecture class. The makers of a small, independent film
focused on events surrounding a middle school, urban kid want to develop
their original concept into an educational series -- but in a participatory
fashion. They would like to encourage kids (likely through educators) to
learn about film and contribute original footage. Anything beyond this
basic concept appears to be the stuff of research and imagination. I though
to reach out to the the video blogging community on grassroots projects that
might offer insight. Certainly, not only questions concerning IA (scenarios,
design, etc) important, but also questions such as feasibility, cost, etc.

Kids and teens are creating video content independent of school. Finding
classroom appropriate videos would mean a lot of YouTube slogging through
 um, yeah, whatever... type videos.

Start with skateborders and go from there. That is part of the key to
finding content. What would the students want to see? After eliminating the
first and second things coming out of their mouths you could find gems.

The costs has dropped dramatically. Yes, still expensive for a school
district cramping for funds but editing software is already on the computers
 for Mac and PCs.

There are inexpensive web camcorders between $50 - $100. You don't need
 anything else but time.

 On the education vibe:

The projects can be teacher initiated or as part of an overall educational
program. Because kids are involved many of the projects are behind school
district intranets. There are a few video projects that are on-line but tend
to have older students as participants.

It helps to look for the teachers as creators/initiators in order to find
the projects or dive into the educational non-profits that showcase these
 type of projects.

Can you be more specific as to what exactly you are looking for? Are you

cost and can it be done?

The resources are out there but they are spread out across multiple
 disciplines and interest groups.

Technical and business reasons both seem plausible.

One technical reason would be that iphone UI is smooth because it uses
hardware acceleration. Not trivial to allow flash to take advantage of
that, or multitouch etc. And looking at how much cpu flash uses on the
desktop, and previous experiences with flash on other mobile devices,
its easy to imagine very poor framerates and quick battery loss.

So Apple wont want things to run badly on its flagship mobile device,
so they will stay away from flash unless the performance lives upto
what people expect = not easy. Im convinced theyd rather not have
flash than have flash at crappy framerates.

Business side, I dont know what their relationship with Adobe is like,
seems these days that they are not special friends, and also probably
the kind of control-freakery Apple want to exert over what apps can
run on non-hacked iphones ipod touch's, also plays a part.

If the overriding urge for flash is because of video, then the gradual
move over of a lot of flash video to flash h264 video will ease the
problem, it isnt that hard to make a player that will use flash to
encapsulate a mp4 in the browser on desktops, and embed the same mp4
directly for iphone browser playback, automatically.

The iphone SDK announcement was interesting today but anybody who
probes deeper isnt allowed to talk about the details, so we'll have to
wait some months to see what apps come out, and how restrictive Apple
are about sorts of apps (as they are acting as gatekeepers over what
 can be installed).

Ha! Plastic coffin. How true! Now that I've got a Nokia N95 my poor flip cam
is sitting in the dark waiting to be picked up again. But I was happy to use
it on a canoe trip a month ago and it did a great job even in the little
waterproof pouch I had.

I did a video comparison of the flip with the RCA small wonder and the flip
won hands down. The RCA has the very nice feature of SD expansion but the
video quality is poor and the software does not exactly run off the camera
as advertised. You have to install a couple of dependencies first. Here's
the comparison.

I just got it last night, and took it straight to the bon dance at my
local church. No instructions, no practice. And I was impressed --
again remembering that it's a $130 gadget. Heck, its ability to
capture ANYTHING at night was surprising.

For a while I was flummoxed to not find a single administrative menu
on the thing (I can't turn off the cheesy beeps)... but then I
realized that's exactly why this might work for kids, grandma, or the
wholly impatient YouTube fan itching to get SOMETHING online.

The hardest part of getting started was getting the thing out of the
darn molded plastic coffin it came in. The hardest part of using the
videos it recorded was... well, using a Mac. It comes with stuff for
Windows, but to use OSX video tools takes some hacking. More hacking
than I had patience for. So I just ran the Flip Video software under
Parallels. I used the Movie Mix tool, strung together 25 clips, and
 voila:

Personally, I love the Xacti. Much better quality video. But that's not the
point. This is a camera that is:

- cheap
- easy enough to give to your grandmother who is technophobic. no manual to
read or confusing settings
- includes software on the device so you can run it on any computer (no
installation!... think internet cafe)
- AA batteries -- much better for field use

My point is there is a reason for all the constructs in vlogging. And
that point is accessibility and usability. I could give a crap less
about what people want to call it, but without many of the core
fundamental features in a blog like permalinks, and an archive it'll
be hard to get and retain regular viewership.

Hmmm. Time will tell. And technology will evolve whether we're involved or
not. Lots of people don't know what permalinks are. But they know they can
subscribe for things in iTunes and see previous episodes listed in iTunes.
Show notes? It won't be long before subscribers start asking for them. And
things will happen. Once you involve the general public, you also involve
decision-makers in the general public. They won't act, until they
understand...

That Amanda has caught the attention of mainstream media and public is

2006-12-01 Thread Lisa Harper
Okay... this is cool, but... what about the problem with bandwidth? Is the
overall throughput on the global internet actually increasing and can it
meet the demand??

I, for one, am stuck with relatively slow speeds at home. There is no cable
or DSL available so I don't subscribe to videoblogs, it's too great a burden
on the pipe. Uploading video is a pain unless I find time to do it at work.
Bittorrent has been incredibly useful. But it's akin to snail mail given
I've downloaded some stuff that's taken weeks. Psychologically, I'm happy
with this arrangement -- it's not supposed to be fast. Some of the folks I
know who are relatively untech-savvy -- have the same problem with getting
video on the web. Capturing is not a problem. Editing doesn't go beyond
trimming and is not difficult learn. But putting clips on the web takes them
a whole lot of time because of low bandwidths. So, in my mind, there is a
process here that is long and difficult -- not actual steps in and of
themselves.

Where I see a potential gain is the ability for the device (in the field) to
actually background transfer media to some website where users can edit,
post, etc. So, imagine a cellphone where data transfer does not impede other
functionality on the device. A kind of bittorrent queue. By the time the
user is home and ready to review and edit videos, they are online and the
effort is now relatively small to edit, delete, share, etc! Of course, you
still have the b/w problem at home for loading but quite frankly, I can
see a technological solution here, too... previews and edits could be made
on thinner media (smaller data rates, frame rates) -- and even the ability
to torrent down the user's inbox so it's resident on the home machine with
the ability to sync edits

 user-generated
video, new research conducted by interactive agency Sharpe Partners
indicates that more than half (54) percent of adult Internet users
 currently
create their own video offline, but only 11 percent actually upload it to
the Internet. That margin, says Sharpe, represents a significant
 opportunity
for software and system providers to help facilitate the migration of a
burgeoning consumer generated video marketplace online. It also suggests
 an
even more profound fragmentation of the video marketplace is looming than
many industry experts may have predicted. One of the chief reasons for the
disparity between producing and posting video is the difficulty consumers
said they have with the process. The study, which was conducted online by
Harris Interactive, surveyed 2,125 U.S. adults between June 29 and July 2,
and found that more than two-thirds of those who create their own video
found it difficult to edit their content due to the lack of
 consumer-friendly software.

Clearly, given easier solutions, consumers will be far more likely to
 edit
their videos, said Sharpe CEO Kathy Sharpe. And those who edit their
 video
are presumably more likely to share it with others, which will expand this
 market even further.

We go to the news to see the state of the world... but, in fact, a
better pulse would be vlogs, if more people had them. Look how
important Pepys is today -- and all he kept was a daily diary that
talked about the everyday happenings in his life. I look forward to
the time when vlogging is easy as taking a pen to paper.

Re: [videoblogging] Flash Video question for Actionscripters

2006-06-02 Thread Lisa Harper

Does this mean that flash 8 is basically unproblematic with respect to
duration and scrubbing?

I've just started working flash and flash video and love the
flexibility of it. The sad thing is that ffmpeg does not transcode to
On2VP6 yet.

This is a question for the Flash developers out there...

I'm creating a little side-project Flash application that plays Flash
Video files (FLV) from a playlist.

I've run into a documented bug in FLV versions prior to Flash 8 where
the duration metadata is incorrect. This screws up the time progress
bar and seeking functionality of my video controller. There must be a
trick to get the duration for older versions of FLV since its obvious
that other Flash video controllers can do this. Any advice from the
 Actionscripters out there?

Here's some documentation of the bug (scroll to the bottom):
 http://www.jeroenwijering.com/?item=FLV_Video_Compression

 and here: http://www.sti-media.com/blog/archives/000111.html

This documented bug is quite common since most video upload sites
automatically compress with Sorensen (Flash Video 6/7 codec).

I've used a tool called FLV Metadata Injector to correct the FLV metadata:
 http://www.buraks.com/flvmdi/

This does work, but I'd rather be backwards compatible with Flash Video 6/7.

The Nata Clinic is responsible
for health care delivery to the 6,000 residents of Nata, Botswana and the surrounding

The clinic also oversees the three remote health outposts of Maposa,
Manxotai, and Sepako. The outposts are reached by dirt/sand track
and the farthest is 36 miles away. The clinic is so busy that
it is often referred to as a hospital. The closest general hospital
is 60 miles away and the closest surgical hospital is 120 miles away.
The clinic consists of two main buildings. The 1st building has
two consultation rooms, one room for wound dressing changes, pharmacy,
and an office. The 2nd building consists of a 3 bed
ward, 2 bed delivery room and a 4 bed post delivery/recovery room.
There is also a trailer where the PMTCT (Prevention of Mother to Child
Transmission) Lay Counselor performs pre and post test counseling for
HIV/AIDS and the nurses collect blood for the CD4 (T-Cell) count of
HIV infected patients. The compound also has four houses where
some of the nurses live.

This is moving us toward the idea of high granularity of
videoblogging that Adrian Miles talks about.

To get what Motionbox is doing, take a YouTube and add a ton of
really great editing, mashup and deep tagging features. Like YouTube,
Motionbox transcodes files to flash to reduce file size and
standardize viewing. But they also store the original files and allow
you or those you authorize to download those files and/or purchase
DVDs with the files.
