I have an Audio-Technica AT875R shot gun mic which I'll be using for my videofilmings and would like a boom pole to go with it. Holding a pole myself is not an option. A boom pole holder may work. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=boom+pole+holderN=0InitialSearch=yes but only for a subject that is not moving about. Please give me some guidance what features to look for in a pole, where and what best to purchase, etc. Some poles have the mic cable built-in, and of course the length varies. You can always go with the Home Depot / Lowes extendable paint pole. But you will need to purchase an attachment to convert the end to hold the mic. http://cgi.ebay.com/Make-mic-boom-pole-w-adapter-4-rode-other-microphones_W0QQitemZ220557427871QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item335a3f449f and, of course, this also requires you to run the mic cable the length of the pole. If you are shooting outdoors you will definitely need a windscreen. The foam type may work well enough, or it may not. Better is the furry or dead cat type of windscreen. Even better is a blimp type with a furry cover. If you have a person to hold the mic/boom pole be sure that they have headphones and can actually *hear* the audio from the mic. Otherwise they won't know if they are holding the mic / pole properly. This may be a long cable running out of the camcorder to the person, or .. you can do double system sound and record to a high quality digital recorder. In that case the recorder can be carried by the boom pole operator and and there is less chance of someone tripping on a long cable from the camera. You will need to sync-up the sound in editing, but it's not as hard as you might think. Richard Amirault N1JDU http://bostonfandom.org [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

The truth is that people are making wildly different types of content and have massively different interests and reasons for doing this. But back in the early days, we all had this huge thing in common, which was that we were early adopters, imagining what the future would look like and how the tech would work. I think that made up the main part of what people would talk about when they met in groups, right? And because there were just a few people around the world, it felt like a special mission, deserving of extraordinary expense and time. Now that future is here and most of the unknowns are pretty much known, that's one massive incentive to meet up that's been removed. The rest of what we do is done online, so travelling hundreds or thousands of miles to hang out and chat in person just doesn't have the same pull. But meeting up to either work on projects or screen things might be different. Still, I notice that most conferences are very local - city- specific. Attracting a larger base of people mostly interested in commercial applications of technology so they can justify taking the day off and expensing the conference fee... So if we were to do more of these kind of things, I think they'd have to be local. (i'm sure this is why VlogEurope has kept going for 5 years). Rupert http://twittervlog.tv On 5 Dec 2009, at 19:51, Michael Verdi wrote: Maybe another part of another not happening is that I think there were two big motivations (figure stuff out and meet each other in person) and there's really not a lot of urgency behind them anymore. There's only so many conferences on the figuring the tech stuff out that you can have. The information has been pretty well disseminated. I recently went to a local brown bag coworking session and a few people were doing a presentation on videoblogging. It was really strange because it was almost an exact replica of a demo I've given over and over yet, nobody there had any idea who I was (not that they should). So it feels like, especially for this group, that that part has been taken care of. As for the meeting in person aspect, that still happens but just on a smaller scale at other conferences. I live an hour down the road from SXSW and a few times in recent years I've just gone up there to meet people for lunch and dinner. The Open Video Conference was cool this last summer - a good sized group of us hung out there. -Verdi -- Michael Verdi http://michaelverdi.com http://talkbot.tv [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo! I've been thinking about this a lot, and I agree with your assessment that different groups will have different cost structures and will be watered down to what the market will bear. In terms of Frisbee dogs, a highly complex activity with only a few people qualified or capable of delivering instruction that is worthwhile, I think we're all set in terms of pricing. I'm not selling fish, I selling a fishing manuals. Flyball on the other hand is a much more simple sport in terms of behavior - run jump over some hurdles and get the ball on your box turn, jump some more hurdles and do it quickly. Not much serious instruction opportunities there. A friend of mine produced an instructional DVD for flyball with the world's best team, and the 20 minute piece retails for $30. It's good stuff, but can it be broken down into bite sized chunks? Not sure. They'll hang out for the community interaction. Agility is another highly complex sport and instruction is very expensive. It's a great fit. Dock diving? Not much serious training there. This is just to show that there are different possibilities with different topics. The specific idea I mentioned to start this thread, the jamming videos, could not retail for more than a buck or 2, but at a buck or 2 with the right players, they'd sell like hotcakes - a couple hundred should be easy, not bad for a 2-4 minute video with limited editing. While this is kind of selling the fish, and not the manual, it is also selling the manual as the disc dog world goes round by stealing tricks. This could not happen with all dog sports, and could not happen with all kinds of activities. The people we are bringing in for instructional video are not just some people. We have, perhaps, the best discdog instruction in the world (not like we have many competitors) - it's certainly world class. I'm pretty sure we can get the price I'm talking about for instructional pieces, at least in agility and Frisbee. The other stuff not so sure. I'm betting on some good crossover numbers (agility trainers looking at frisbee after good healthy exposure) and solid hardgoods sales from the various small business vendors that service the community. Rambo, I think you and I are in the same place on this. The passion that paddlers have is very close to dog sport people's passion - we're just friggin' crazy about it. I don't think many people realize how disconnected many of these communities are from 'reality'. Who spends thousands of dollars to Fiji (and pays to ship a boat!) to beat themselves up in the water for some Kukui nut lei or something. It's crazy. Who has 30 leashes and collars for their dog? Or has 13 dogs, 8 of which sleep in bed with us at a time like we do? We exist in our own little reality and there is no corporate media organization that is going to go there. It's the long tail or nothing. I am doing my best to create a community that allows for the kind of support that Jay mentioned in his earlier post. All I have to do is put them all in the same place Vendors, trainers and participants, let them

Was done very well - not drawing too much attention to itself - so there'd be a slight shimmer on the sea, or a slight blowing in the grass. Then sometimes a slight Ken Burns effect was added, but with a 3D effect created by splitting the foreground, middleground and background elements into separate layers and animating them appropriately. Creating a slight feeling of tracking towards the subject rather than just zooming. I expect a slight grain/flicker was added to the image to make it seem like a video GV rather than a still, too. This year we were hoping to let VlogEurope take place in a more central- or Eastern European setting, and after Loiez (www.loiez.org) suggested Budapest, we thought: Yeah! Budapest fulfills our mentioned and often stated intention to move things east, it is cheap to get to, cheap to be in and we hear of many good times there. The date of such a conference is always tricky. After requesting feedback from our community, we concluded that October 18th and 19th, Saturday and Sunday, are the best dates with hopes that as many people as possible can be in Budapest Friday night. There are varying degrees of regulation. Some regulation can be good. Stifling regulation is rarely, if ever, good. Pink unicorns may have managed to bring us a chocolate river while some regulation existed, but you'd be hard-pressed to make a case for regulation on this basis. oh man, freemarket discussions. these are often very frustrating because no one has ever really lived in a freemarket where everything and everyone is equal. By nature, with examples again and again throughout history, anyone with power does his best to limit competition. if there is no group conscience (ie smart regulation keeping people honest), then you have monopolies. there is never one rule that you can lay down for ever situation. as a people, we must look at certain situations and decide how we want to live. if it's dog eat dog, fine. Let's at least really all agree on it. Help me follow this line of thought. Let's talk about Comcast charging for bandwidth usage. Lets say I dont like their service. In a freemarket, I would change broadband providers. But Comcast (like most cable companies) are usually the only game in town because they have signed monopoly agreements with each city...and then consolidated their power by buying up as many local cable companies as allowed. In the 70's and 80's, US cable companies demanded these monopolies (with limited regulation) because they were investing heavily and needed a guaranteed return. They laid down their cables on public property (streets and sidewalks) to build their networks. They also argued that you cant have 10 companies tearing up the street to lay their own cables either. It'd be madness. Yes, I could switch to DSL or Satellite internet, but these are still just 2 more choices. Both of which might not even be available where I live. (DSL is not on my street because im too far from the headend. Satellite is too limited and could never handle the masses) So I dont like an unregulated Comcast, but i don't have much choice but to go with them. Since they are a private company that are only loyal to private stockholders expecting large returns on unlimited profits, they do not have to share any of their data. Their network is busy? How busy? at what times? Can we all monitor and have access to this? Can we discuss alternative solutions rather than me paying out the nose? No. We simply trust their reasoning, call it a free market. Regulation and transparency is bad. Cable companies have cried for deregulation for years and gotten it for the most part. they said prices would go down. all evidence shows that cable bills steadily go up each year for one reason or another. how important is the internet to the functioning of our society? I wonder if we apply this thinking to water and electricity? where does free market stop? why cant i create my own electric company, water service, or cable company? do we really drop any sense of public spaces and public good? can I have my own army? Re: [videoblogging] Re: Mac for videoblogging and podcasting?

They opened an Apple store near here, so I got a Mac Mini when Tiger came out. I was impressed by it, and it was indeed very very quiet compared to all the PC's Id had. I then went on to get a Macbook, and it was the same, almost silent in normal operation. They are far from silent when under heavy CPU load though, so for example when you are encoding video, the fans will turn it up a notch or two and will be quite audible. I also liked the fact that Apple doesnt put fans on the bottom of their laptops, unlike many PC laptops of the time, so I could put it on my lap or bed etc, without worrying about blocking the fans. But these issues are always a trade-off between heat and noise, so Apples stuff does not run that cool, but you may still get away with a macbook sitting on your lap. I use a utility to manually override fan speeds, so if I think the machine is getting too warm, I give it a quick blast of fullspeed noisy fans, till its cooled down. I cant really advise on whether the software bundled with a new Mac will do what you need, as Ive spent too long playing with higher-end software to remember, but you do also have the option of installing Windows on the laptop as well as OS X, and thus being able to run the apps you are used to. Now the hardware in a Mac is now nearly identical to other PC's, so theoretically there should be PC laptops etc that have the same low-volume operation. But as there are such a vast array of laptops out there, and hardware manufacturers make different decisions about the cooling system, and what temperatures are tolerable, I couldnt actually say what PC laptops have equivalent noise levels to a mac. Certainly most of the tower PCs I see these days are quieter than the ones that used to drive me nuts in my bedroom. Cheers Steve Elbows --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Frank Carver [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I hope this is not too off-topic, but I can't seem to find answers after several attempts at searching, and I know that a bunch of people on this list use Macs for their video and audio work. I have never used a Mac of any sort. In fact, I have never even seen one running up close. We have no apple stores around here, and I don't know anyone locally who has a Mac which I could play with. I have seen plenty of touch-feely ads, and read a lot of subjective discussions and rants, but I am completely unfamiliar with the unspoken and unwritten assumptions about Apple products which are probably pretty obvious if you use one for a while. I have plenty of computers, running a variety of Windows and Linux/Unix operating systems, but they are all noisy. Whenever I try to record any sound or video here in my office there is always the hum and rush of fans in the background. With this in mind I am considering getting another computer, probably something portable, so I can use it in quieter places. I don't really want to risk a lot of money on this exercise, so I want to take a no bells and whistles approach and use a bottom of the range model if at all possible. So my puzzlement boils down to a few questions: 1. Is the current lowest-priced MacBook (2GHz Core 2 Duo with 1GB RAM) and the included software suitable for my videoblogging and podcasting needs? I don't tend to use a lot of fancy features ... For video: straight and L cuts, occasionally a dissolve, mixing of location sound, music and voice, import of JPEG images, and some sort of lower-third titling would do the job. I record either on a Mini-DV camcorder or on a flash-memory camera which produces ASF files. For audio: mainly just assemblng a selection of alternate takes into a sequence, and linking them together over a substrate of music or background sound. Source material is either MP3 or WAV recordings from a generic MP3 player/recorder, or direct into the computer through a mic preamp. 2. Are the current generation of MacBooks silent/cool in use? This is the bit that's really hard to find out. I've been all over the apple web site and found lots of stuff about how intuitive and arty the whole experience is, but nothing about whether or not you can hear cooling fans running when recording and editing, or whether if you use a laptop actually on your lap it is comfortable or too hot. 3. Alternatively, can anyone recommend a low-cost, easily portable, silent/cool brand of ordinary PC which I can use with the software I already have? Many thanks in advance for any help and suggestions. -- Frank Carver http://www.makevideo.org.uk

Countries that were not sentencing journalists to prison terms anymore have been doing it these last months for bloggers. This is the case in Egypt http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/world/countries/egypt.html?nav=eland Jordan, she said yesterday as the group released its sixth annual Worldwide Press Freedom Index http://www.rsf.org/IMG/pdf/index_2007_en.pdf. Egypt ranked 146th and Jordan 122nd in press freedom among the 169 countries for which data were available. Reporters Without Borders said major industrialized countries, including the United States, made slight progress, moving up several notches, with the exception of Russia http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/world/countries/russia.html?nav=el. Iceland http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Iceland?tid=informline topped the list for press freedom in the survey, and Eritrea http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Eritrea?tid=informline ranked last. While not all press freedom violations were known in the countries ranked second and third from the bottom -- North Korea http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/world/countries/korea.html?nav=eland Turkmenistan http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Turkmenistan?tid=informline -- Eritrea deserves to be at the bottom, the group said. Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki has banished privately owned press outlets and jailed the few journalists who have dared criticize the government, it said. We know that four of them have died in detention and we have every reason to fear that others will suffer the same fate, the group added. Most democracies improved their ranking, with the United States moving up to 48th place from last year's 53rd, Morillon said. The reason the United States did not make the top 30 is because videographer and blogger Josh Wolf spent almost eight months in jail for not turning over video footage of a demonstration in San Francisco http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/San+Francisco?tid=informline and because the confidentiality of sources is under continued attack, she said. Cameraman Sami al-Hajj, from al-Jazeera satellite television, is still being held without charges at the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/world/countries/cuba.html?nav=el, and journalist Chauncey Bailey http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Chauncey+Bailey?tid=informline was killed in Oakland http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Oakland?tid=informline, Calif. http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/California?tid=informline , after his coverage made him a target, she added. Outside Europe http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Europe?tid=informline, no region has been spared censorship or violence toward journalists. We are particularly disturbed by the situation in Burma http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Myanmar?tid=informline, Reporters Without Borders said. The military junta's crackdown on demonstrations bodes ill for the future of basic freedoms. . . . Journalists continue to work under the yoke of harsh censorship from which nothing escapes, not even small ads. China http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/world/countries/china.html?nav=elwas at the low end of the index, in 163rd place. With less than a year to go to the 2008 Olympics, the reforms and the releases of imprisoned journalists so often promised by the authorities seem to be a vain hope, the group said. Concerning Uzbekistan http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Uzbekistan?tid=informline (160th), Reporters Without Borders said it feared a wave of repression would target the handful of independent journalists left in the run-up to the presidential election in December. In the Palestinian territories (158th), the threat has changed, according to Morillon. Two years ago, it was coming from the Israeli forces shooting at Palestinian reporters. These days, the main threat comes from internal conflicts and the rivalry between

I've been asked to join the new team, serving as VP of Product Development, and will be heading up FireAnt's transition (among other projects) as we re-launch everything under the Odeo brand later this year. First of all, I want to say Thank You to everyone in the videoblogging community who supported FireAnt along the way, especially Jay Dedman, Daniel Salber, Erik Radmall, and Clint Sharp, who were instrumental in launching this project. We met a lot of wonderful creative people, and made some really important lifelong friendships. It's been an amazing privilege to contribute to this dynamic and innovative community, and especially to have been involved from such an early stage. I also want to thank Jonathan Weiss, Drew Reynaud, and Jesse Boley who continued FireAnt's technology development over the past year, which was demo'd at Video on the Net in March 2007. When we first launched ANTs Not TV at Vloggercon in January 2005, there were about 20 active videobloggers we knew each of them personally and worked with most of them to create those magical RSS feeds with enclosures. It was amazing to see all these video channels updating over time and to watch them in a unified experience. There was nothing else like it. It was clear that something powerful was happening. It was a new kind of television, and yet it was not like TV at all it was open to anyone and the possibilities seemed endless. And it began to spread thanks to the many talented and creative video producers, educators, and evangelists. While FireAnt had its share of struggles along the way as a start up, I'm encouraged that the ideas we helped pioneer have grown incredibly stronger over the past few years. This Not TV (now more often called Internet TV) is really changing the media culture, and it's having profound social effects. The medium is enabling new voices and conversations. The playing field is being leveled the barriers between Internet TV and TV are disintegrating. so I'm wondering what's odd about me oh where do i start On 8/24/07, Deirdre Straughan [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I've been very much myself online for 25 years, from text to video (I still mostly do text), and have sometimes been asked whether it feels weird to have complete strangers know so much about me. If it felt weird, I wouldn't do it. What I tell about myself online is not quite as open as it appears, but anything I'm hiding is mostly out of respect for others' privacy, not concerns about my own. Sometimes protecting others gets me into gray areas. I'm beginning to wonder: when are the stories of my life MY stories, free for me to tell, though other people are big parts of those stories? It's interesting to see that my daughter (now legally an adult) has followed this path of openness without my really discussing it with her explicitly. She's had one weird stalker incident (turned out to be a local teenager), but not much else to feel uncomfortable about in spite of being far more appetizing a target than I am. The return for my openness is that I've made a lot of friends (and so has Ross). I have usually been comfortable with blurring the lines between my online and offline worlds - as those who came to vlogEurope last year know, I had no qualms about inviting to stay in my house a bunch of people whom I knew mostly via their videos (which, ahem, I'd hardly even watched). (If all else failed, Andreas would beat them up for me, right? grin) BTW, while we're on the subject: I'll be in the Bay Area from Sept 5-15 and would love to see people! In San Francisco 5th evening through 8th am, then Silicon Valley for a conference (Storage Developers - not exciting to this group, but I am being paid to film it!), then back in SFO Sept 13-15, when I leave to return to Europe. -- best regards, Deirdré Straughan living travelling in Italy (and other Countries Beginning with I) www.beginningwithi.com [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

They seemed like they were on the vanguard of understanding small content and producers, but when push came to shove they weren't. I don't want them to fail. I want them to live up to the promises they made (both exlicit and implicit), and the way they've been handling themselves it's been a disappointment. I think part of the reason why they are failing is that they've had a big company mindset. If they just returned to their roots and focused on the needs of producers (selling ads, making money) and away from being a technology company (making yet another flash player, owning Vloggies), they might get themselves out of this mess. They had a copy of the Popular Science article in a file along with 4 pages of notes as to why my project was a threat. This led to my bizarre arrest, which happened on national television while I was being interviewed by Ron Reagan on MSNBC's Hardball. I was arrested with no crime being committed. Just simply plucked from the street, jailed for 24 hours, and my computer, cell phone and bicycle confiscated and held for over a year (the bicycle was never returned). The fake charges against me were dropped 6 months later. The NYTimes article confirms what I had long suspected -- that the NYPD was unlawfully conducting surveillance of artists, activists, and others seeking to exercise free speech at the RNC convention in 2004. Here are the videos: The Bike Project http://www.bikesagainstbush.com/blog/iloveny.mov The Arrest -- Street Footage http://www.bikesagainstbush.com/blog/bikesarrest.mov MSNBC Interview http://www.bikesagainstbush.com/blog/msnbc_8-29-2004_med1.mov BikesAgainstBush was important because it was one of the earliest demonstrations of the power of the blogosphere to distribute video -- the raw street-footage of the arrest circulated around the blogosphere and was viewed by millions of people both before and after the edited version aired on MSNBC's Hardball. Immediately after this project, I began working on software to distribute video via RSS. I met Jay Dedman around this time in NYC, and we began working together. This became ANT (ANT's Not Television) and later FireAnt http://FireAnt.tv. I wanted to share my thoughts here, in the videoblogging community, as I'm reflecting today on the state of media, how far we've come and the work that remains...
