Regarding VideoCue: Do yourself a big favor and thoroughly investigate before you'd purchase this program. The demo is a little misleading Rather leads you to believe it can do some things that it can't, ie) the TelePrompter: great idea, poorly implemented. You can't easily edit your text as you go along, nor stop in the middle and resume shooting. It's more of a toy for very short shoots... And that's really disappointing, 'cause it COULD be so much more! I also bought Wirecast from the same developers for hosting live streams... 5 times the price and a lot more sophisticated, yet still leaves you wanting more. If anybody knows of a more serious alternative to VideoCue, a teleprompter program that you can actually record into, and which allows for switching between multiple camera angles and inserting QuickTime movies... [videoblogging] working w/video from multiple sources
Hello, i could use some help regarding video shot from a variety of sources, which i'd like to bring all together and edit on Final Cut Pro 6, ultimately output and compressed to a few different formats: quicktime H264 for my own website (and for iPod), flash for YouTube, and then of course the ability to burn to DVD in high quality. The output/compression shouldn't be a problem for me. Its the choice of codec for importing and working with multiple sources that seems confounding (!)... wanting to maintain decent quality without too many rendering stages, and not bogging down the computer... my multiple sources include: - Canon HV30 mini-DV camcorder, shooting in either HD or DV mode - Sony TRV950 mini-DV camcorder in DV mode - shooting blog-type video in Quicktime from my Apple MacBook's internal camera, which uses h264 640x480 millions 16.7 FPS / AAC stereo 44.1 - capturing to disk from Wirecast video streaming software, which uses a strange codec suffix i've never seen before f4v, but it think its also h264.. and the highest-quality option i could choose came out as 720x540 millions 22.1 FPS / AAC stereo 44.1 (wondering where these arbitrary frame per second rates come from?) - a friend's portable video camera which puts out Apple MPEG-2 SD Camcorder Video 720x576 (1024x576) 16-bit Little Endian 48k... (pretty low quality) I'd imagine that i have to pick one codec to edit with and then batch- process all my clips ahead of time, and then import them into FCP. I have a recent MacBook Pro 2.93ghz and firewire 800 hard drives, so processing power is probably not too much of an issue; however, HD footage probably only makes up 25% of my clips, so i don't think its necessary to choose HD as my codec of choice (as it tends to take quite a while to render!)... Any suggestions? Part 2: Sometimes i'd like to simply edit the Quicktime/Macbook or Wirecast H264 video all by itself, within its native codec, so there's less chance of loss (and less time converting files). Using Final Cut 6, when you drag a captured clip into a sequence, it 'sometimes' prompts you to see if you want to change the sequence settings to that of the clip... cool... but: for some reason it still often requires a rending stage, and its usually the audio weird... why? is AAC a problem? also, sometimes the imported movie has serious audio drift, which gets worse the later you go in the file...and so it doesn't appear like an easy shift would fix it. You know, the Rocketboom mess was so publicly discussed on this board. However, the follow-up resolution was not touched at all. What is up with that? I read in Andrew's blog a few months ago that he got 100% ownership of RocketBoom, but I never saw it mentioned here. (or anywhere else for that matter..) Wow, i just posted a vid to YouTube, and i can't believe the drop in quality! I made an .mp4 using H264 in Quicktime 7.1, 320x240, 550kbps vid and 80 audio... its a short video, so its only 5.7mb Whatever codec they convert it to (?) looks awful and washed out... certainly larger than 320x240... So there must be a way to get better quality on YouTube... by uploading a movie saved in a certain codec or size to begin with? (so the double compression doesn't totally destroy your data)... Yes, it is simple. However, if you are like me, my screen is visible to like the whole office and I need to be sneaky. Can't have someone's vlog splashed all over my screen for management to see. They don't pay attention to the text from the emails so much... That is why if the feed was in the signature, I could add it to my feed reader and view it later at home. Then I would not have to go and search through all the messages when I get home to try to find the post from someone to click on the link to read their vlog. Anyway, it was just a thought, and the thought was just for me. Thanks for the input. [videoblogging] How often should I post new videos?
Hi. I have just started my vlog last month, and have posted around 7 videos so far. I have a few more "Waiting in the wings". (actually, they are starting to stack up) How often do people post vlogs? Is it daily, once a week, a couple of times a week? I have not been in the community long enough to figure this out yet by following the RSS feeds. I have been checking out my "visitors" via sitemeter, but I don't seem to have that many. I don't want to post videos faster than they get viewed, but if I have no viewers, should I still post videos? Any thoughts? Thanks! [videoblogging] Blogger timeline tips needed
hey all,
I could use a little advice before i plunge head-long into some
guerilla web design,
editing and/or re-blogging:
Long-story/short: I've been accumulating a LOT of misc media the past
7 years...
(traveling around with my studio run off solar power, housed in an
RV)...
lots of half-finished stuff (i was working on doing a DVD)
and only a small percentage of which has made it to my blogger site
(yeah, its rather disorganized... and has taken many forms, but
mostly quicktime clips
and rambling text entries...)
and only recently have i gotten my blog feed-burnt... syndicated...
So now i'm charting out my next directions... but before i move forward,
what i'd like to do is present the whole succession of 7 years thus far,
as a scrollable time-line which tells a bit of a story...
This would essentially be one giant web page with varying bits of text
and thumbnail links to as much as a hundred or so movies!
So the classic blogger format would surely be too confusing... as i
would like the viewer
(at least the first-time viewer) to start at the beginning,
and then follow along (or skip ahead at will) throughout the
evolution of the story...
up to the present day. So its essentially a reverse chronologic
order than standard blogging
('cause the newest blog entries are always visible first, at the top;
and i'm suggesting the opposite.. and to my knowledge there's no way
to do this via Blogger.com)...
As far as ideal story timeline, my gut instinct tells me that this
would be best presented from left to right...
the same as a time line in a video or audio editing program..
and of course this is the same direction that we read text... across
a page (except in this case without hitting the return key or turning
the page).
Of course with nearly a hundred thumbnails to video clips, this would
be one huge horizontal scroll (!)
and subject to error on the web i think (?)
and i'd probably want to have some 'frames' on the page,
so the viewer would always have a frame of reference, or way to
escape...
back to beginning, end or home-page...
But perhaps better for web delivery would be to have the entries
cascade down the page...
like the opposite of blogging... I'd start with 1999 entries (the
beginning of the story) at the top,
and the web-surfer would just scroll down...
all the way to the present day.
But with this format, I'm afraid the viewer (of short attention span)
might not so clearly grasp the time-line...
especially since people are so accustomed to blogging being a
vertical format which features the MOST RECENT entries up at the
top... and i'd be gambling that they'd grasp the opposite... hmmm...
Well, first-off, Is there any blogging software which might support
this feature... this time-variant way of posting... or for lack of
better term... retrospective blogging?
And if not, i'm wondering how to best do this in Dreamweaver (mac
osx)...
Or perhaps barter/pay someone local in LA to help me do something
cool in Flash?
Any ideas anybody?
I'd also (ideally) like to be able to group certain entries together,
in thematic chapters..
well for those who are curious, here's my old-school and very messy
prototype (which i abandoned a couple months ago... in deference to
my blogspot).. which certainly demonstrates a need for such a re-
presented page ...

Hi. If you check out eyespot.com, you can email your phone videos to their webpage and then, you can download either a wmv, or qt file. It is really a pretty cool page. Hi Jan. Um, I don't know? I actually have not viewed my RSS feed in an RSS reader yet. I use bloglines, and have been so busy adding other people's video feeds, that I had not added mine yet. I just now added my feed to my bloglines reader, but I am at work and they block eyespot, so I can't see if the video shows up in my rss reader or what it looks like. Right now all I see is text and no pictures or video. I will have to check the RSS feed when I get home, to see if the video shows up in the RSS feed. I really did not do anything special on my blogspot settings, so even if the video does show up in the RSS feed, I still could not answer the question.. (I think your question was that the videos are showing up in my rss feed of my site, but you are having troubles displaying your videos in your rss feed for your site and how to fix that?). But, if I find out that the videos don't show up on my RSS feed, that is good to know and I will have to try to figure it out. Thanks! [videoblogging] question about updating my feed
greetings all, well i've got a feed up and running via Feedburner, and soon i'm ready to add another video clip. one thing i'm not quite clear on is whether or not i need to update anything so that the new clip becomes part of the feed? is this done automatically the next time the feed is pinged? i know RSS is supposed to be really simple syndication, but this is one very obvious question that my preliminary searches haven't found an answer to. and then next question, what about this feed in regards to iTunes? i noticed that some of the fields like description and i for info are a little bit off. i'd like to fix these manually, but they use the same feedburner feed. should i copy the feedburner feed text and then manually alter it to my liking... and then put it up on my own server (in the same folder as the enclosure files) as a text document and then point iTunes there instead, or can one feed handle both needs ideally? i know i have a little experimenting ahead of me, but thanks much for any shortcuts! cheers, greg Yahoo! [videoblogging] pointing feed to a blogger page vs. web-page?
Greetings Vloggers, though i've been posting videos to my site for years, i'm still kinda getting my head around this RSS thing. I've been on the list a while, and thanks to tips listed here, i've indeed burned a feed to a new blogger page i started recently... but, i'd like to only have to maintain ONE space where people can subscribe to my videos, if possible. and i think I'd prefer that it be my own site's video page... or perhaps maintaining the 2 could be somewhat automated...? ie) if my site's video page could be 'fed' the videos (somehow thru RSS?) as they're added to my blogger page? hmmm hoping someone could please let me know if this is feasible or even possible to do. and, here's part 2: on my site's video page i have links to html pages where i enclose (correct terminology?) the quicktime video http://eklektro.net/ek_breakbeatweek.html But i'm not sure if the video links on these pages qualify as true enclosures... because they are all merely links to secondary html pages... each where a given video link (enclosure) actually resides. So i'm guessing that i couldn't burn a feed to a page where there are only LINKS to enclosures, as opposed to the enclosures themselves.. right? So this is where i think i need to learn some real web design protocol (i'm self-taught and dangerous in Dreamweaver)... 'cause the way i've been embedding a single movie in an html page, it starts to load and play as soon as the page opens... whereas on blogger, the viewer has to click a link to open the movie... know what i mean? On blogger.com, the link is to the movie's URL itself, as opposed to a link to a page that contains the link to the movie's URL... So perhaps the solution is as simple as making the click on the link mandatory before a video would load (otherwise i'd have dozens of videos trying to load simultaneously!)... So i guess that this is the bit of code that i'm missing on my own site, and if anybody could show me hot to modify this via Dreamweaver or other, that'd be great one thought though, regarding play-ability, i HAVE seen better browser success rates, loading videos that were embedded into html pages. but i guess i'd sacrifice this in order to simplify everything else. But are there any other drawbacks to using one's own site for vodcasting, as opposed to a blogger page? anything i'm missing? and/or, best of both worlds, regarding my first question: if there's a way to have my site's video page subscribe to my blogger page's videos and update accordingly... now that'd be great! Dreamhost sounds pretty great (!), and i'll probably move over to them ASAP; but perusing their features has raised some questions regarding hosting videos... namely their feature for Quicktime Streaming (which they point out is NOT support for live broadcasting) vs. how i've been delivering movies for years, via HTTP on my own site, with .mov files enclosed in html pages. For vloggers, is there any benefit (or detriment) to utilizing the host's QT streaming (Darwin) server? You have to make your movie hinted, and you need to create and upload to a specific subdomain. Heck, i have so many archived movies, i'd prefer to just d/l my whole site from the old server and upload it as-is to Dreamhost; but i want to make sure that there's no downside as to how they host HTTP video files, as compared to other hosts in other words, do they offer Quicktime Streaming in order to make up for some deficiency in how HTTP video files are handled on their server? Please excuse my ignorance of the technology here, but before i sign up and begin the process, i want to rule out any unforeseen hassles. And i think i'm still happily in shock about the new pricing(!) (as compared to what i currently pay Hummingbird Hosting.) So if anyone could explain the QT streaming vs. HTTP situation, i'd be most appreciative! i found this on GoDaddy today while i was renewing my domain... Are these prices for real? I thought i had it pretty good with 1 gig of storage for $9.95/mo. And the transfer spec... 250GB per month??!! seems hefty enough for most vloggers! [videoblogging] voice-over in FCP or other???
Wondering what people are using for doing voice-overs, or if anyone else has experienced the same problem i'm having in Final Cut 4.5. In fairly dense sequences, the voice-over ends up being out of sync, and its actually offset forward in time! In other words, adjusting for offset previous to recording can't correct this error, because (i think?) this feature is set up to fix latent offset... to fix voice-overs that are delayed in time. There are no negative numbers for adjusting, so any offset choice actually makes the problem worse. So i'm sure the pros don't even use the FCP voice-over feature, and probably sync up to an audio program. But of course i'd like to see if i can fix this problem, rather than make the whole voice-over process so complicated. And for the record, for this project i'm doing fairly rhythmic and demanding voice, so i'd prefer not to have to nudge it in time after doing each take! [videoblogging] browsers, enclosures and codecs
Hello all ye faithful... well i've been posting quicktime mp4 vids to my site for years, but now want to mirror my activities on a blogger.com page, as well as submit a feed to iTunes. i understand most of the process, but am confused when i test out my work... on different platforms. i'm on a Mac, now using Quicktime 7 and the H264 codec to output an iPod-friendly mp4 file. Well, here's the first issue: When i upload one of these new mp4 video files to my own web server, sometimes the icon appears generic on the server (viewed from Dreamweaver)... I mean it fails to display the quicktime thumbnail, though my pre-H264 mp4's all fly the Quicktime colors consistently. well my previous routine was that i'd usually deliver the video via an html page on my own site, and when i perform this old familiar process and substitute the new codec quicktime file, the generic icon usually proves no problem, and the video usually play. (i say sometimes and usually because my troubleshooting process has been interrupted several times the past few weeks...) but when i enter in the http address to the video file itself (following directions on Freevlog), well here's issue #2: both safari and IE come up with errors of either gibberish, or audio without video(!)..., though Firefox will play the file... though sometimes Firefox has a pop-up asking if i want to view what appears to be a video. So all this seems problematic for delivering video via Blogger and iTunes... unless i was to enter in the address of the html page on my site containing the video (rather than the address to the video file itself) in the enclosure...?? but from what i'm picking up, this doesn't seem to be the way people are blogging. From my understanding, with a blogspot address, when you click a link, it should take you right to the video... not to a page on one's website. So i've got to solve what appears to be a browser or codec issue before i go any further. I've been lurking on this list for about a month now, and am surprised i haven't seen a post of this nature yet, given the amount of variables i've encountered thus far. I really appreciate this forum, and am inspired by the discussions of this new evolving format, so i hesitate to clog the list with my nuts n bolts kinda post. if there's another forum more tailored to this kinda thing, please advise. getting frustratingly close to syndication :) cheers! and thanks in advance for any advice greg eklektro.net los angeles Yahoo! Greetings all, after lurking on the list for a couple informative weeks, here's my first post: Though i've been uploading quicktime movs to my site for a while now, i decided to take a stab at RSS for vlogging, so i could get onto iTunes blogs, and eventually others. I followed the vodcasting directions spelled out on http://playlistmag.com/features/2005/07/howtovodcast/index.php? lsrc=mwtoprss pretty cool outline it seems (?) though some of the example RSS code they gave had inconsistencies with other outlines i found on the web... but hey, i'm figuring it all out, so I set up an .xml file (step 4 in the article) and uploaded it (step 5) along with my movie, which was compressed in Quicktime 7 with mp4 specs for iTunes and presumably iPod... both were uploaded to my own server and put in the same folder, as directed. After some fiddling around with step 5 and some problems with step 6, I cut to the chase and went to iTunes and chose advanced, subscribe to podcast; and after manually entering in the URL to the XML file, http://eklektro.net/blogs/eklektropod.xml i got the movie to play in iTunes ! (step 7) My only hurdle at this time is step 6, testing and playing the clip in my browser; as i suspect the problems i'm having may point to an error which may impede other syndication (?) As directed in step 6, i enter in the same URL into my browser: http://eklektro.net/blogs/eklektropod.xml but the results i get are not those expected. i get all the text fields mashed together, fine... But i don't get any read more link like it says in the directions. and so its a dead-end, and i can't test my cast... other than directly in iTunes. Im on a Mac, and the above scenario is what i get in the latest Safari browser. and don't know if it makes any difference that i'm uploading to my own browser. i never had problems with quicktime ever before. Even stranger, in Internet Explorer, the URL just sits there and displays an empty page... So i quit and tried it again and got the message your browser cannot find our style and presentation information and may not display properly... No it didn't. Any clues? I'd like to fix this problem before i look into linking up to Blogger, Yahoo and others...
