Post of the week

On a different note, I haven't done this in a while:

GROUP HUG

I really appreiciate what we are doing: demanding that we communicate. I
forget that
sometimes on this list. But really, just because I'm shouting in the corner,
does not mean
you have to answer.

I'm not worried, someone will.

Better yet, let's not even have an A-list, or any other list except the
list of what each of us likes. My list is different than your list or
anyone else's, that's fine. Few of us will be come famous or wealthy as

[videoblogging] Re: why people videoblog

2005-10-26 Thread Bill Streeter
I completely agree Jay. I've really enjoyed the personal Vlogs I've
been watching. Historians will tell you that a lot of what they know
about the past--a lot of what they know about how people lived, is
because of things that were written by ordinary people. Yeah they
read all the official accounts and the press but they really rely on
personal accounts to fill in the blanks of a story. So in this way
personal video blogs will serve those purposes in the future. And I
don't even think that you'll have to wait 100 years for them to be
really interesting. In 20 years they'll be facinating. The most
popular thing I think that I've posted was a music video that was
made by some obscure band in STL in 1981. It probably wasn't
considered to be all that interesting at the time it was made. But
almost 25 years later it's interesting because of what it documented
about a subculture that very little is known about but was a
influence on things that came after it. A lot of personal video
blogs will be the same way, no doubt.

the video is by a guy in Boston who does this site:
 http://www.culturalfarming.com/
(warning: the media nipple vlog has pictures of nipples eventhough
its
 about media literacy)
i belive he's coming from a TV background.

i really like this guy's work. ( i forgot his name)
he brings attention to the absurd and often harmful images/messages
that come through mainstream media. much needed.

I think his video deserves a response.
first, it always cracks me up when i hear: real videoblogger.
though the Videoblogging group has some good insight since many of
us
have seen it grow from the beginningno one is real or fake.
from the get-go, we always avoided pushing any kind of format.
we've tried to encourage anyone to do anything.
all we've ever asked is that people make a blog with video
enclosures.
soon many other groups will form...each with their own philosophy.

what I realized was that i could record my life.
unlike many podcasts and all TV shows where I would seek for a
large
audience, im bascially making a digital scapbook for myself(in the
 future) and my friends.
i look back a year ago...and see how we were gearing up for
Vloggercon...my girlfriend and i had just met...i was living in
this
little hole in upper manhattan with a couple of roomates who would
stay up late at night chainsmaking and bitching about the
goverment.
 my kids will love this.

In today's traditional media, there are no personal voices.
You have people like Bill Oreilly and Amy Goodman who get to record
and distribute their voices...why not ours?
remember that blogging is built on MANY small voices

i think that the Cultural Farming guy is frustrated because
 videoblogging is so young.
more formatted shows are comingespecially now that the video
iPod
is being hyped as a delivery device).
but i also like the weird personal vlogs that are almost like i
 shouldnt be watching.
like i get to see someone just talk and be.
in 100 years, this will be gold because you will see what people
were like.
while in 100 years, some daily show on technology will be curious
pop culture.
 IMHO

here i am...allowed to see your intimate family moments.

how great is that.

it really isnt weird though.

right now, i dont have relationships with people in other countries
UNLESS i have met them in person somehow.
there are few places for me to talk to people from other countries
about our lives or things happening in the world.
Many reasons for this: language barriers, we dont talk to people
unless they are like us, some cultures might not have the urge to open
up.
But with VideobloggingI really see a foundation being built.
In 10 years, when a large group of people(thousands?) start recording
their lives online...youll be able to surf around and share their
consciousness. Without sounding like a smelly, fucking hippieI
think this is pretty cool.
Seeing how someone lives creates empathy.

Tis reminds me of a great Daily Show observation:
Manhattan voted 87% against Bush.
we were also the center of the only US terrorist attack while also
having the gayest population on the planet.
the election was decided becasue of fear of terrorsim and
disaggreement with gay marriage.
when you dont know people, you can really hate them.

I would love to see this group get away from A-list and move forth. Let
videoblogging flourish without A-listers blogrolling A-listers, without
clique-y behaviour, opening the doors to all producers, developers and
collaborators.

I have never met JG but love his spirit. The petrie dish concept is a
wonderful thing, make open media, live open media.

I like his statement Behind every Vlog there are individuals,
people YES!

I don't know Rachel, Mark, Abe, Chris, Ryan, David, Robert, Christian,
Johnny, and Johnjacob tho I think I'd like to meet them all. JG, please
help get their work online for us, help us video bloggers discover
these new people and their ideas.

Let's make a special effort to make this happen, let's make the
community more open, let's let in anyone who wants to develop tools,
create content, communicate ideas.

Let's not discriminate, let's not be small, let's welcome everyone to
attend all functions, with no excuses.

Let's make this happen big, let's make an extraordinary effort to not
exclude and for us all to be open. Let the people be visible, let the
B, C, D and E list be visible, let everyone be equal. And let everyone
be a collaborator. Be collaborative, not exclusionary.

Make love not war. Kudos to Verdi and everyone who helps noobs, and
everyone encourages peeps everywhere have a conversation with all of
us. Check out Charles Hope's link to Blip-hosted entry
