[videoblogging] Re: I was Attacked by NYPD ~ Wanna Watch?

2006-12-18 Thread greg

I posted the video also, but I did not have much comment.

The video was part of a three part "series" I posted. The first video
was Henry Rollins ranting about how "They" are coming for you and your
rights. Your video was posted to "prove" that Henry actually knew what
he was talking about, and that the thing he was waring about actually
happend to you. The last video I posted in the same vein was the Josh
Wolf interview from GETV.

Anyway, I too thought that the video spoke for itself, and taken in
conjunction with the other videos I posted in the same entry, I felt
that it spoke for it's self.

If you are interested, you can view the post at...

Do you think that Josh Wolf's witholding his videotape has anything to
do with this escalation in technique?

Is confiscating cameras a trend? Feels like a trend to me. How can we
prove whether or not this is true?

2006-12-17 Thread Gena
I posted the video and links to your site on my vlog this morning. I
didn't want to blather on about it, I really want people to see what
happened to you without me editorializing about it.

It is that kind of video, it doesn't need a set up. Only a fool would
argue that what we see didn't happen.

I'm far from NY and I have been telling non-vlogging folks verbally
about what happened to you. They nod their heads but I don't think it
is real to them unless they see it.

I'm more saddened that there is not an outrage or major stink about
this criminal act by the police. Now, granted after what they have
done in the past six months this may seem like small potatoes but
still have the local papers spilled any ink about this?

Re: [videoblogging] Re: I was Attacked by NYPD ~ Wanna Watch?

2006-12-17 Thread Steve Garfield
That's an interesting comment.

It made me go back and look at how I posted about this.

I wrote:
--
Get That Camera
Video: The War on Journalism.

Police steal vloggers camera.
--

Not much commentary.

I remember having a problem writing a description for this video. Part
of the reason was that the video itself was so well done in telling the
story and explaining what happened that I wanted to let the viewer hear
the story directly from you.

It's very powerful.

Another reason the text on my post is sparse is that you don't describe
the contents of your video in your blog post. A lot of time I like to
copy and paste some text from to post I'm reblogging to help describe
it.

On your post you say:
--
"This video is dedicated to Independent Journalists worldwide who've
paid a price for seeking the truth ... some more than others. ~presente

HOW TO TAKE ACTION

It's not like this is the 1st time ...
CBS 2 Investigates: Videotape Cops At Own Peril

In the last three years, there has been an increase of 25% in civilian
complaints against the NYPD. In the last two years, there has been an
increase of 12% in lawsuits filed against the NYPD for false arrest,
assault, excessive force or other wrongdoing.*"
--

So to sum up, your video told the whole story and I basically wanted to
link to it so people could watch it themselves.

Thanks

Curious how you felt about your physical position.

Jan

I am somewhat accostumed to being deep in the fray, but it wasn't so deep when
I entered.

It got a little tense and I wanted to leave.

I was waiting my turn to exit when things got tight... was about to head for
the exit again when I saw the cop extend his baton at the cuffed person.. so I
felt obligated to stay but that's when they asked me to leave, I said I was
press, they said I needed to leave anyway, I agreed and started out the hole.

I've noticed an oddity in the way many people have reposted this. Most just
put a headline and a link, including people I have had a great deal of on-line
& real life contact with... nobody seems to want to say anything about it. ...
seems odd that people who have asked me to give video activism workshops at
national convergences would remain so silent.

I inquired many people about whether or not I should make this video and
everyone said it was important to not let them get away with their
smashing/stealing camera activites this time, since there was so much evidence
of their actions. This is not an isolated incident. It's a violation of
rights of Journalists. It is a violation of rights any citizen with a camera..

I know it's serious content and a serious subject... but I couldn't help
from chuckling a little when I saw the cops swipe ONE camera, even though
there were at least 20 cameras there. It's just amazing to me that someone
would even bother with taking one, when the others are all filming ... you
taking the one camera... !

Simply amazing.

I'm glad you are ok. I am glad that you are not locked up or have been
artificially "ventilated".

I keep saying this - y'all need to be extremely discreet when filming
PD. I don't care what the law says; I don't care what our rights are.
Rights are no good if you are dead. Yes, get the shot but do not put
yourself in harm's way.

I could see that you were in compliance with the order but to PD it
does not matter. They couldn't even see the other cameras, cell phones
and other recording devices. They focused on you.

Some members of the PD have moved to a position of self-protection and
defense. They have the color of authority to steal and/or kill. Assume
that they will be hostile, assume that they will be unhappy with
documentation.

I don't know but folks please start thinking about this if you are
going to cover these kinds of events. Backpacks with lens holes. Lower
quality cameras with external tube like lens. Think of multiple exit
routes as you slip in and out of view.

Take care and be as safe as you can.

He did not receive a receipt for seized property. He was not even
directly asked for his camera. Instead, without any warning, he was
jumped by two police officers, one of whom is an NYPD captain, and
knocked down onto the asphalt of 39th Street. One police officer was
succcesful in wrenching the camera out of Flux's hands. As Flux
crawled around on the ground looking for the eyeglasses which had been
knocked off his face during the attack, the cop with the camera
quickly conferred with another officer. Then he ran off to hide the
camera.

[videoblogging] Re: I was Attacked by NYPD ~ Wanna Watch?

2006-12-12 Thread Enric
That is quite bad and stupid. The illegal police camera seizure would
obviously caught on other cameras. And action can be taken against
those police officers from that evidence.
