[videoblogging] Re: Spam from Veoh?

2005-08-19 Thread Steve Watkins

Firstly Id like to apologise for referring to 'the guy with the pink
hair', as some researching on past conversation here about Veoh
reveals that its Halcyon who has posted here to this group in the
past. (eg http://groups.yahoo.com/group/videoblogging/message/19607) I
did not mean to refer to someone who is actually in this group in a
way that made them sound like an unknown person we've never heard from.

Now I just noticed that Ive received an email from Veoh too. I
certainly dont remember signing up. It could be my bad memory, but
considering the number of other people affected, I think someones
taken liberties with your mailing list system.

Who knows who is responsible, but I wouldnt be surprised if someone
had harvested email addresses from this very yahoo group.

Even if it wasnt an action sanctioned by Veoh, you are still
responsible for your list. A good and fully compliant/safge system for
such lists may work as follows.

Opt-in with validity check.

User puts their email address into a form on website to sign up to
list (as at present)

System sends user a confirmation email, saying that someone has
entered this email address to be surscribed to veoh mailing list. This
email includes a link they have to click on to CONFIRM that they
actually wanted to sign up. If they dont click the link, they are NOT
added to your email database.

Sometimes such emails also contain the IP address of the computer that
made the initial request on the website, along with a warning to that
affect on the page where you subscribe, as a deterrant against gits
putting other peoples email addresses intot he system.

Whilst Im spouting advise from my high-horse, I may as well comment on
the whole 'upload tools gets released first' philosophy that Veoh seem
to have gone for, and google video the same before them. Whilst its
totally understandable from a technology point of view, ie you want to
test that part of system and actually get content onto server first,
it sucks for encouraging people to take an interest. Feedback from the
early days of the google video beta showed this.

ie Why would I want to upload content to a new and untried network
when I cant see what the experience is like from a viewers perspective?

On a positive note, if youve released a PC and a Mac version at the
same time, you get a big thumbs up for that from me.

Cheers

Steve of Elbows

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Spam from Veoh?

2005-08-19 Thread Stephanie Bryant

Dmitry,

I searched my gmail outgoing folder, which I have never ever deleted
anything from. No message there to anyone at veoh.com, so clearly I've
never directly emailed to join that notification list.

Here is what I think happened (best scenario): someone subscribed to
this Yahoo! group with the notify@ as their email address and
harvested addresses from people who emailed to the listserve. Whether
that was done deliberately or as an accident, I don't know. You've
been very up-front about Veoh and I don't believe this is a deliberate
part of your business model. But if notify@ has an auto-adder to it,
it would certainly be one quick way to get a bunch of email addresses
without really thinking about it.

Also, it's more than one message. I received one that's still in my
inbox (the initial press release from Maddie) and then another one
this morning, not from this Y! group, which went directly into my spam
box and which I deleted permanently about an hour ago.

Glad you're attending to these issues.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Spam from Veoh?

2005-08-19 Thread Michael Meiser

Most unfortunate Watson!

It's quite obvious to me (as I track all emails by using unique
addresses for every different service) that these email addresses were
harvested directly to the video blogging group. And harvested they
were, there's no denying it, there's way to much correspondence between
the two. For example I received email from them to
groups-yahoo-com[at)mmeiser.com which I only use for yahoo groups.

It's a huge over-site but I hope we can all forgive the people at Veoh.
I can't imagine what they were thinking but I'm sure they won't make
the same mistake twice. Please keep in mind our whole idea of standards
and etiquette are still evolving and aren't so familiar to people who
don't participate in bboards or yahoo groups that often. What's most
unfortunate is I was and still am more than willing to subscribe to or
participate in a mailing list or yahoo group regarding their project.
Their email has thrown a lot of would be fans back on their heals.

If I may make the suggestion... they should start all over, a clear
slate and instead of emailing us all off group through our personal
email.. use this group as a forum as MANY others have (from ANT to
Vlogmaps), for approaching us all us all as a group in the open. A nice
short introduction should work well, where we can ask questions in an
open manner and then perhaps... a link to Veoh's own Yahoo group or
mailing list for those of us who are interested. Personally I've loved
to follow the conversation on projects I'm interested in. Almost every
project I'm interested in from Flickr, to Del.icio.us to Ant and so on
has a mailing list of some sort.

their previous press release caused some moaning about press releases,
which caused several people connected to Veoh to appear, apologise,
and provide a link to the yahoo group for Veoh.

The best way they can fix the current mailing list strife is to
concede that their mailing list database is impossibly tainted, and to
trash it and start again with a fully compliant opt-in and opt-out system.

I guess that would be a brave move, considering at the product beta
release stage they need to spread the word to those who are genuinely
interested, but because the database has lots of people in it who dont
want to be there, I think its a measure that should be taken for the
sake of their reputation.

As for the reality behind anti-spam legislation, I believe people who
are sending thousands of emails occasionally, as opposed to millions
every day, are more likely to suffer the negative effects of annoying
the hell out of potential customers, than legal penalties.

Cheers

Hey, I'm the pink haired guy and I may have been resposible for some
of the confusion and mistaken emails. I get excited and may not have
communicated well with Maddie when I was gushing over many of the
people on the list.
I truly apologize.
In any case, I have known Dmitry for many years and he is a stand up
guy with a visionary passion. I just spoke with him and I have
confidence he will do whatever possible to make this right.
If you have lingering frustration or doubt, I'd give him a call (he
posted his phone number).

Again, my apologies to those who got mail they didn't want.

Who are you directing this at? There is no one person here who decided
to talk every day about veoh spam, to the detriment of all other people.

If the way I offer advice makes me come across as self-important then
Im very sorry, but I am unable to know how to change, and if sounding
like a smart arse is a potential side-effect of offering advise then I
guess I'll just have to run that risk, because Im only hre to learn
from other people and to hopefully say something useful to some people
every once in a while.

I wouldnt want to waste this groups time by talking about spam too
much, but I see the Veoh discussion as totally legitimate because it
relates to a service that is trying to engage this group specifically,
and who listens and responds to this group. See how an outcome has
been achieved, making me for one feel absolutely no guilt for talking
about it here.

Stop being stupid and whining. You are not smarter than anyone else,
you are not the most important person in the group and you are

I guess we need to remember to not let a certain thread get on our
nerves. I think I also got some email from Veoh but I must have
deleted it without further ado. I receive a lot of mail I did not ask
for, and deleting them if I want to is not that hard.

On the other hand, this Veoh story is very interesting, just like it
was with the original press release. Maybe they just like the
attention? ;)

I hope this whole episode ends up teaching someone something about how
to pitch the videoblogging crew. We might be genetically different
from the people who love being sent emails without asking for it, but
I doubt that.

Videoblogging services will bloom, and That is awesome. I just hope we
can learn to skille klinten fra hveten - which is a Norwegian
_expression_ I have not the energy to translate right now. :)

Wishing you all a great weekend,
I know I need some rest.

2005-08-19 Thread Gena

Oh dear - I suspect you are having one of those special days.
I sense you really are trying to make amends. I'll wait and see. But
to be clear:

Please remove me from the notification email database. If you have a
product or service that I would be interested in my usual path is to
go directly to the web site to check it out. It helps if there is word
of mouth or I discover reviews/recomendations from people I trust.

I don't like having my email address plucked from my blog, forum or
other discussion groups. I did not opt-in. All this did was to bring
instant bad feelings for your company.

I don't want more crud in my mail box. Not saying your stuff is crud.
But if you have email then you know what we all have to wade through.
And I don't even have the anatomy/equipment for 90% of the crud.

I have no need for male performance enhancements. Parts is parts and I
ain't got the parts. ;-}

Take a deep breath, do what you have to do. Tommorow is another day.
