Richard: Here's how to change to manual settings on a Mac.

1) Plug in your iPod. :-)
2) Click on the iPod icon in the lower right corner of the iTunes window.
3) That opens your Preferences window and you can select the radio
buttons based on how you want to manage your iPod content.
4) As I have a space issue (as well as occasional spacy-ness issues) I
choose "Manually manage songs and playlists". I use Playlists to
manage my podcasts and music that get moved over to my iPod. I simply
choose the Playlists and Podcasts to automatically update, then I
manage my playlists. It ends up being a pretty automatic process that
is still controlled by me.
5) You can also choose your settings for your Contacts, Calendars, and
photos in this same window as well.

Three points in favor of manual syncing:

1) If you have a hard drive crash and your iTunes is not backed up, it
may not be possible to get stuff off your iPod and back onto the
computer if you have your settings to "automatically update all songs
and playlists." With manually manage, and using some of the sw others
have mentioned here, you have a good chance of keeping stuff from your
iPod.  (As a sidebar, I have the content still from my 1st Gen iPod,
when they came pre-loaded with MLK's "I have a Dream" speech" and a
few chapters of Harry Potter. I wish I could say I hadn't had any
un-backed-up crashes over the years.

2) If you have wy more stuff in iTunes than will fit on your iPod,
you'll pretty much have to manage it manually.

3) If you subscribe to a lot of podcasts, you can set each feed's
settings to delete from the iPod after being played, to clear up space
and automatically replace old shows with new ones. I find this really
handy.

Nope, I don't see how to access the invisible folders on the Mac.  I
tried using Terminal, but had problems accessing the iPod volume.

2006-05-19 Thread Bill Streeter

There is a doc on the apple web site about doing this. I'll have to
dig it up when I have some time. But setting your ipod to sync with
iTunes is much safer than transfering files manually. This way your
ipod is an exact copy of your itunes library and if anything happens
to your HD or your iPod you still have copies of everything.

2006-05-19 Thread Enric

If you turn on "Manual manage songs and playlists" under
Edit->Preferences->iPod (may have to turn on manual also under
"Podcasts"), then go under the iPod drive in Windows Explorer.

[ipod Drive]:\iPod_Control\Music

There you'll find directories with all the music and videos downloaded
to your iPod.  They're invisible directories, so you may have to turn
on viewing invisible folders in Windows Explorer:  Tools->Folder
Options...->View->Show hidden files and folders

The files are named by iTunes, not by their original names.  If you
want them all, copy the directoreis to your hard disk.  Then you can
look at them individually and rename them to what they are.

2006-05-19 Thread Bill Streeter

Actually the best way to do this (for future reference, because if
you do this now you'll lose all the data on the ipod) is to format
the iPod as a PC and Mac compatible external drive, and load
whatever you want to back up to it via the finder just like you
would any other external drive.

Were you on a mac, I'd say get iPod rip, which should allow you to choose the songs you want to xfer - but perhaps not onto you own already-synched machine. Perhaps an interim machine would be of help. Xfer to that machine, then to your own box.

2006-05-18 Thread LeanBackVids.com

Oh, and there is always the iPodLinux Project
http://ipodlinux.org/Main_Page

Warning: Make sure you dual-boot it otherwise you'll be screwed.  I
had an old iPod that I overwrote everything w/ Linux and quickly found
out that the iPodLinux Project does not have an "off" function for v3
iPods.

I resorted to cracking open the iPod and using the 40GB hard drive w/
an 2.5" USB enclosure for portable storage.  If you try to buy that
much storage at that size it retails for over $120 USD.  Not all was lost.
