Re: [videoblogging] The YouTube "debate" is over..........

2006-12-04 Thread Harold Johnson
I agree -- with an additional point to make. First, I agree that YouTube
currently appears to be "king" of the online video space. I also believe
your comments apply to the iPod, which are currently "king" of the portable
DAP (digital audio player) market and may continue to be for some time.
Apple's marketing team has done a stellar job these past few years.

Yet -- and here's the point I wish to make -- it's not the marketing alone,
I don't think, that's propelled the iPod to its majestic summit. Let's not
forget the importance of the design -- both the physical design and the way
all the software components fit together. YouTube has kind of done this,
perhaps -- what do you think? Certainly YouTube's videos aren't all equally
created (encoded), but the system is certainly easy to use.

One thing I rarely hear discussed is the name. "YouTube" seems an ideal
brand name for this type of service. Though I like Blip's ".TV"
designation, the term "tube" combined with "you" perfectly captures the
spirit of the technology -- or at least, it gives even the casual observer
some indication of what the service is about.

Re: [videoblogging] The YouTube "debate" is over..........

2006-12-04 Thread Charles Iliya Krempeaux
Hello Heath,

What YouTube has done is called "branding". And they've done a good job of it.

Now... that doesn't mean that "they've won". That only means that
they are "king" right now.

Once upon a time AltaVista was the "king" of search engines. When
most people said "search the web"... most people automatically assumed
you meant "search the web with AltaVista".

Today... that's not the case. "Google" is currently "king" of
search... and is synonymous with "searching the web".

Want to be "king"... go on a branding campaign. (And of course have
something at least "descent" to use.)

I don't know if it lacks historical perspective, but I am talking
about a moment in time and yes there are lots of things that can
happen, but given the recent price YT fetched and now that Google is
behind it.I don't think it is going away anytime soon

Heath

And just for the record, I am not saying YT is better or that it is
the only way, I am talking about my perspective on an event, that
makes me feel a certain way. Personaly I use blip because I think
it's better for me to do so, my choice, my opinion and I hope that
blip is successful because I happen to like the guys and gals at
blip

There was a time when, for a great many people, the Internet was Yahoo.
This conversation lacks historical perspective. Yes, we may be in a
time right now when someone thinks "Internet video" and then things
"YouTube." That won't last forever, and the lifespans of such things
get shorter every iteration.

Re: [videoblogging] The YouTube "debate" is over..........

2006-12-04 Thread Scott Lockman
You know it's the real deal when it gets transformed from a noun to a verb
ala Rocketboom, "Man, they Rocketboomed my video - I'm famous." Or Google,
as in, "Jimmy's chances of getting the job evaporated the moment the head of
HR googled his name."

Such was also the case when FOX's Jane Skinner said that everyone would
YouTube her when she had so much trouble saying, "Top Cop" on the air
recently. She was right! They YouTubed her with a vengeance.

Linguistically, the iPod seems to be precluded from such grammatical
shenanigans. The pronoun I at the front makes it very difficult for iPod to
ever be more than a clause or a simple sentence. It doesn't seem to be able
to work as a verb in the same way as google, rocketboom or youtube do.

Many have tried. Who can ever forget when Robin said, "Holy homophone, I
can't believe I pecked and I pawed my way out of the slums of Gotham just to
wear these leotards, mask and boots" to Batman? Though sounding like iPod as
a verb, it just isn't gonna work.

Zune it appears to have a far better chance of being used as a verb the iPod
ever will. And it has Minesweeper, too. End of discussion!

Thank you,
Scott

2006-12-04 Thread Josh Leo
I was in a coffee shop the other day waiting to film the tree lighting
downtown and a news crew was there talking to people about the cities
wireless internet plan. he asked me if they could interview me, and I said
yes. He noticed that I had some experience in terms of knowing about the
lavaliere mic. etc... but when I told him that I have a video blog and that
was why i was downtown he responded "so you got videos on youtube" ...to
which I responded with "no they are on my own site..." he was one of these
guys who only waited for his turn to talk instead of listening (bad quality
for a journalist) so he came back to me later and said something to the
effect of "yeah you know with youtube a person can just make a video, have
it get really popular and then get picked up by a big network or something,
it is amazing..." I tried to explain to him the difference between viral
video on yourube to the "show" i have online but he still wasnt getting
it... I really dislike network news peoplebut yeah, youtube is all
everyone knows so getting people to understand real video blogs on people's
sites instead of youtube "vlogs" is an obstacle

but the difference between the ipod and zune is that the ipod actually is
better... youtube is just more popular

I think that, while you're touching on a point, it's not 100% the point.
I wrote a massive LiveJournal post on how I see the "economics" of
blogging working, which is the long form and context of what I'm going to
say here. If you're interested on my thoughts, you can find it at
http://cuplan.livejournal.com/256364.html#cutid1

Basically, though, I think that it's a bit post hoc ergo propter hoc to
suggest that YouTube is online video. While it has, for now, become a big
brand name for people, I don't think that, in the terms of "the economics
of blogging" as I see them, that YouTube is actually the end-all when it
comes to carving out a name for yourself in online video. Consider that
MySpace or LiveJournal or whatnot is considered the one-stop location for
blogging, too, but the most popular blogs are kept on the sites of their
creators.

So, much like I think someone with a lot of creativity needs to use a
MySpace page as part of their marketing plan, I also think that a
successful online video producer will vastly benefit by throwing a few
bones on YouTube. At the end of the day, though, YouTube doesn't strike
me as where you ant to make camp...just a place to visit and promote
yourself.

[videoblogging] The YouTube "debate" is over..........

2006-12-04 Thread Heath
I just had an interesting experience today that put in perspective to
me just "what" YouTube has become. YouTube IS online video,
vlogging, whatever you want to call it. YouTube is it, it's the Ipod
of online video and everyone else is sandisk, zune, etc.

Now, why do I say that? A month or so ago I filmed some footage for
work to go to an offsite. The guys and gals where I work know that I
do video and put stuff online, they know I do not "use" YouTube, that
I have a vlog site, etc.

Well I just put together a clip of flubs from the guy who was doing
the "tour" on the video. (it IS funny btw). I put it on a VCD
because I was just going to give it to the guy as a funny gift
(because the name of the company and such was mentioned I did not
want to upload it, don't relish getting warned/fired) I showed it
this morning and it killed but what was interesting was this.

Everyone said, "That needs to go on YouTube", this from guys and gals
in age from 20 something to over 50, "This needs to go on
YouTube"NOT "hey put it on your site or upload it to blip or
Revver", or whatever, no it HAS to go on YouTube.

YouTube is or has become a "the" standard for online video, I mean
what else can you conclude? Understand these are not "techy" people,
yes they may be a little ahead of the curve but trust me, just
ordinary guys and gals. YouTube is what the know and what they use
to watch videos. I mean it is like it is "America's funniest videos"
for the web.

So what does this mean? To me it means the conversation on wheather
YouTube is "really vlogging" or is here to stay, is a moot point.
Yes you can become "sucessful" in vlogging or online video without YT
but to the VAST majority of people if you aint on YT, then you aint
doing online videoI don't want to say that, I don't want it to be
true, but I am really beginging to think that it is true.

Maybe I am wrong, I want to be wrong in some ways but I gotta say
based on my very informal "test"...the YouTube "debate" is over.

btw yes, I am going to upload the video once I make a few "tweaks"
and yes I am going to upload it to YouTube as wellbecause well,
