lens attached due to weight, but for shooting stable shots, I use a tripod

Given your price-point and the other factors mentioned, I'd suggest
considering a Sanyo Xacti VPC-CA9 (under three hundred at WalMart, as of
this date).
We are using a multi-camera system with the CA9 among them, which we use for
underwater and fowl
