Well I think experience helps. I've been a happy Black Friday  
participant for years - always among the first in the queue. Also  
planning and making sure your are SUPER EARLY in the queue. I look  
forward to it all year long - Black Friday and MacWorld Expo San  
Francisco the second week in January - also coincides with my  
birthday - are my two favorite holidays. The complaints come from  
people who did none of the above. If you do not take it seriously and  
plan in depth, you will have a lousy experience. Plus I live only 30  
miles from a Fry's Store - which is unlike any other consumer  
electronics/computer chain in the world. Although there were good  
deals at Staples and CompUSA, Fry's had the killer deals.

I don't consider my purchases needless consumerism because I need an  
endless supply of Hard Drives long term as they are now cheaper than  
DV Tape when obtained at sales like last Friday and other Holidays. I  
will also be first in the queue the day after Christmas at Fry's and  
perhaps Staples for some more hard drive deals.

None are open yet so only the Maxtor says on the box.

Taylor - where are those hard drives made?  Are we paying what we
SHOULD be for them?  I have a hard time believing that someone,
somewhere, isn't paying the price for that cheap hard drive, in cheap
labour, environmental destruction, or a dead end minimum wage job in a
box store.

In canada it's the day after christmas, and its called Boxing
Day.  I personally hate it - i used to work at a record store
called A&B Sound that had famous Boxing Day Sales - I saw people
get in fist fights over cheap hunks of plastic, yelling at each other
over car stereos - it was definitely not cheery.  Sounds like your
experience was positive, but I found it to be some weird lord of the
flies electronics orgy of needless consumerism, basically everything
wrong with North American society rolled into a single event.  But
then again, I'm not looking for a hard drive at the
moment

to make your PLAN to buy what you need including Christmas presents.
Stay up all night - get in line about 2am so you are among FIRST. The  
line is a social scene. Everyone is very friendly and fun to be with.
Work your plan when doors open at 5am so you are FIRST at the  
register so you are in and out in a flash. We are talking about  
paying next to nothing for stuff. I got 600 GB worth of HD space for  
$60 yesterday. That is a good thing. DV tape would have cost me about  
$200 for 600 GB of space.
I was done by 7 am. Then I drove home to write all you about it. A  
Videoblog is totally unnecessary for this type of report.

I'm glad you caught that andreas. I put those in just to see if  
anyone is reading. :)

BTW, I bought nothing today (but a ticket to a football game). And I  
still got a new camera. I'm so happy. :)

I like the concept of buy nothing day, but how effective do they  
think they are the day after thanksgiving. Perhaps the show of  
solidarity would be better spent on the day after, the day after  
thanksgiving.

Let's see...

1) day before thanksgiving = busiest travel day of the year in the US

2) night before = biggest bar night, not joking, tops st. patty's day

3) day after = biggest shopping day

4) monday after = biggest online shopping day

That just about covers it. Except for the tonnage of turkey consumed.

Many things are the lowest they will be until next Black Friday  
although we get a few other days close to it like the day after  
Christmas and Easter and July 4th and Labor Day. It is by no means a  
herd mentality. But it is HEARD mentality for sure - as in I HEARD  
(read as in the advertising we study on Thursday including online  
reports and reviews to make sure models are not really "dud  
bargains". I learned several key Black Friday secrets just by sharing  
with others in the lines today.

One, The Fry's ads are online at the San Jose Mercury and LA Times  
Websites early evening before the paper hits the street the next  
morning. I image they are also online in the other Fry's markets'  
paper's sites. This is did not know at all. I was always trying to  
find them at the Fry's site instead of at the paper's site. That's a  
big DUH to me. Talk about overlooking the obvious. Plus it's totally  
INTERACTIVE. Check it out.



Two, Always ASK for what you are looking for at CompUSA because it is  
likely to be IN THE BACK. You have to tell even the manager to get it  
from the back. They are totally clueless about what they have put up  
for sale.

Three, don't worry if you are more than one hundred souls back in the  
queue. I was about 150 and was first to the register. On the other  
hand, don't take the queue lightly. You have to be serious about the  
queue in order to become a Black Friday Winner. That is why there is  
no sleeping the "night" before Black Friday.

I think it's safe to say that it is unwise to go to bed Thanksgiving  
evening. After an amazing meal that ended about 8:15 pm, I stayed up  
with PBS NOVA's Hitler's Sunken Secret, new Prime Time CBS HDTV  
mysteries (CSI & Without A Trace), a South Park Thanksgiving Special  
featuring a rewrite of "The Miracle Worker" staring Timmy in SD,  
David Letterman back in HD and hit a quart of Coffee Silk® Soylatte™  
(about the equivalent of two cups of mild coffee) about 1:30 after  
Craig in SD. Then I was good to go. Don't even feel sleepy now at  
10:41 am.

the doors open, it's every shopper for him or her self. There's no

Today I bought 600 GB worth of hard drive space for about $60 after  
rebates. Is that cheap enough for you? Yes 10¢ per GB. DV Tape costs

I will be very surprised if Fry's doesn't open at 4 am next year, 3  
am in '07, 2 am in '08, 1 am in '09 and midnight in 2010. Bring it  
on. Some of us live for Black Friday every year. It's the bomb.

Our last one was in '98 and it sucked a lot. LO (an umbrella org. for 18  
unions) called a general strike. They organize 1,4 million people out of a
