I'm gonna pull a Verdi here and assert that there are no vlogging
mistakes, I mean other than linking to the wrong video or something
like that. Everything else is just counter-intuitive to building a
certain audience, but that doesn't mean it's a mistake. Make what you
want, how you want, but if you really want people to tune in, pay
attention to the things that turn people off and be aware when you
are doing these things...

Re: [videoblogging] Top Ten Vlogging Mistakes

2006-03-15 Thread Deirdre Straughan

Diva, I really did want to hear your answers to these quetions:
I own a virtual agency and I have to negotiate with every artist
regarding usage rights. These folks work hard to produce their work
and I don't feel that it is right to take it without authorization.I am interested in this point - how difficult is it to negotiate such rights? Are there standard forms? What kinds of fees are typical, if there is such a thing as typical in this field?  Is there a clearinghouse where I could go and say "I want to use Song X for my videoblog, which has an average monthly circulation of n, which is distributed by so-and-so means... How much will that cost me?" - and get a quick answer?
I would expect such a service to include considerations such as the difference between using a song in its entirety with no other sound (so that there could be abuses such as people stripping out the soundtrack to put on their iPod without further payment), vs using only some proportion of a song, or using it as background music with other sound so that a clean recording could not be easily stripped out of the video.
You have experience in this field, so if you're willing to share, I'd like to know! -- best regards,Deirdré Straughan

Yup, the one thing that seems to bother me the most is people who just
blatantly use the work of others without permission, and brush it off
with "well, I love the song" or some other such excuse...

Re: [videoblogging] Top Ten Vlogging Mistakes

2006-03-13 Thread Stephanie Bryant
I only have one that I can think of right now.

Filming a screen.

Anyone here who does this: STOP NOW. It's annoying. Filmiing a CRT is
really bad-- the frequency sync problem means you always get a band of
grey going across the screen you're filming.

And there is no excuse for it. It's not like screencasting software
isn't cheap. Get some. Use it. For crying out loud, if you don't,
you're just lazy.

Filming an LCD is not much better-- it's blurry and blue.

I don't really min shaky video. It's usually never bad enough to make to
click away.

Yes. Seriously. I use the text to determine whether I want to download the
video or not. The descriptive text is really important.

My pet peeve is the long intro. Spending the first third of a video
filming yourself explaining what you're going to show me. Cut out the long
intro (and do a short text description) and just *show* me. This is the
power of video - you can actually show me instead of just talking bout
showing.

I would like to see artists compensated, but I would hate to see a situation so stifling (which, if we all played strictly by the rules, we have now) that many brilliant mashups (both audio and video) would never be made. I hate to see the law get in the way of good non-profit fun!

My pet peeves? Don't think I have any. Anything that doesn't catch and keep my attention (very little - I just don't have time!), I don't watch. I don't bother to get peeved about it.
