Subj: [VIHUELA] Donald Gills arrangements for 4-course guitaRe:
Corrente by Foscarini
Ages ago, when the Lute Society published sheets of music because lute
music was not easily available, Donald Gill made some arrangements for
4-course guitar from 5-course music of the 17th century.

Just as a matter of interest, the latest batch of Early Music on-line
articles released includes an interesting one by Alana Mailes -
Teaching in exile - Cesare Morelli's transcriptions in Papys Library
Mss. 2803-4.

To: "Lex Eisenhardt",
I don't recall that any of the original sources actually go into
sufficient detail for us to be certain what players did in the 16th
century. Therein lies the problem. Players being human beings they
probably did what they found worked for them - every player would have
done something
These two manuscripts of baroque guitar music XL b 209 /XL b 211 are in
the Narodni Muzeum in Prague I believe. I have a not very legible
print out of both of them but the pages are unnumbered and it is not
clear which manuscript is which or even whether the pages are in the
right order. The
of the folio numbers from Emil Vogl's article on
Logy in LSA Journal but that doesn't help for the rest of the pages.
We'll have to leave it at that for now I think.
Best wishes

I don't think it is. All I have is an ancient photocopy of it. Maybe
Eloy Cruz would know.

Dear Monica,
Thanks for this.
It seems that this message and Martyn's which preceded it were sent to
the baroque lute list but not to this list. In the interests of
continuity I am forwarding my reply with his message below. Enjoy!

Updating it yet again - I keep getting interrupted - but the tuning
chart seems to indicate that the 5th course is tuned in unison with the
third course stopped at the 2nd fret which would make it re-entrant.

I wasn't able to access the facsimile of this manuscript so can't
really comment in details.
However I think it is a bit doubtful whether Losy actually composed any
music specifically for the guitar; what survives in manuscript may be
arrangements of lute pieces. It is also unlikely that he
or gallichon. Martyn may know more
about it if he has read this.

I had a bit more time to look at this - I act
string on the
thumb side enables you to use the high octave string on its own more
easily as Corrette indicates.
A happy New Year to everyone.
