Re: [vintagvw] 115 V car heater

2012-12-25 Thread No Quarter

You know all this talk about an electric heater got me to thinking...

I had started on but never finished a winter beater Baja bug that I got for
$34 plus a trade of computer parts. It's really a beater, but so close to
being ready for the road. The floors were rusted out so I bolted plywood
down on the floors. I cut out the swiss-cheese luggage area behind the seat
and made a plywood plate that fasted down over the hole. This was so I
could easily get to the the tranny adjustment. It's got a 1970 bus trans in
it and a 1600DP. It's also got wheel adapters, ford rims, and studded snow
tires. I was planning on putting tube sand in the back for added traction.
It still sits in the shop. My plan was to put a gas heater in it, possibly
a propane heater, and then put electric defroster grid on the back AND front
windows, a sump heater on the engine, and an electric space heater inside so
that I could plug it in at night through the winter, plumbers tape around
the door jambs to keep ice from sticking the door shut (although a space
heater inside would probably take care of that), and it would always be
warmed up and ready to go. Top speed would only be about 60 with the larger
wheels and bus trans. It was to be for my in-town commutes to work through
the winter and act as my sacrificial lamb to preserve my other VWs from the
salt.. The reason I haven't sold it is because I still want to do this at
some point.

Someday... :)

2012-12-22 Thread Dave C. Bolen

Bert,

Google and amazon are your friendsgrin.

Just the first one I saw. I asked for 120v car heater

http://www.amazon.com/Kats-37100-Interior-Heaters/dp/B0044726PW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8qid=1356183424sr=8-2keywords=120v+car+heater

Is that kinda what you had in mind?

Cheers, dave

that saw service in Mainz, Germany, in 1970. I've made very few compromises
with modernity or convenience (like, seat belts). And the cop cars there
didn't have bun warmers. The overnight heater is removable without a trace,
so I'll allow it to myself.

RE: [vintagvw] 115 V car heater

2012-12-22 Thread Bert Knupp
Dave,

You've again proven that, if one asks the wrong questions, one gets useless
answers. I searched on Google and eBay for 110v car heater, 115 volt
automobile heater and various combinations therein. I never asked about
120 volt car heaters, so, of course, nothing came back.

I hate when this happens.

But yes, that's exactly the idea. The one shown appears to be larger and
beefier than the little one I had (which, I'll grant, was pretty anemic, but
it made a big difference.) I'll think of a way to set it into the car in a
way it can be easily removed.

Thanks a lot for the help, Dave!

Fröhliche Weihnachten!

I can have a look at Canadian tire for you Bert. I have seen similar
heaters locally

Many moons ago I purchased from J. C. Whitney (remember them?) a

years. It meant that the car was reasonably toasty when I went to work in
the morning on very cold days, with the interior seats, steering wheel,
etc., at least nicely above freezing. In my bus, I even built a little
stand for it between the front seats. Great gadget. It eventually got
 stolen.

I’ve gone online and can’t find anything like it. Does anybody know a
 source? Anybody have one?
