You know all this talk about an electric heater got me to thinking...
I had started on but never finished a winter beater Baja bug that I got for
$34 plus a trade of computer parts. It's really a beater, but so close to
being ready for the road. The floors were rusted out so I bolted plywood
down on the floors. I cut out the swiss-cheese luggage area behind the seat
and made a plywood plate that fasted down over the hole. This was so I
could easily get to the the tranny adjustment. It's got a 1970 bus trans in
it and a 1600DP. It's also got wheel adapters, ford rims, and studded snow
tires. I was planning on putting tube sand in the back for added traction.
It still sits in the shop. My plan was to put a gas heater in it, possibly
a propane heater, and then put electric defroster grid on the back AND front
windows, a sump heater on the engine, and an electric space heater inside so
that I could plug it in at night through the winter, plumbers tape around
the door jambs to keep ice from sticking the door shut (although a space
heater inside would probably take care of that), and it would always be
warmed up and ready to go. Top speed would only be about 60 with the larger
wheels and bus trans. It was to be for my in-town commutes to work through
the winter and act as my sacrificial lamb to preserve my other VWs from the
salt.. The reason I haven't sold it is because I still want to do this at
some point.
Someday... :)
