my having removed them by swiping up then tapping the remove option they
occasionally reappear for no apparent reason.

You are correct in that Apple Maps doesn't prompt you to download any specific
app, but there's definitely a large list of third party apps that it recommends
to you even if they aren't on your phone. When you request transit directions,
you're taken to a screen with two sections: "installed app

I know that if I want to use iOS maps to find a route with bus directions, I
will have to download a third party app. But I cannot find the area in Maps
where it prompts me to download one from a list and connects directly to
those apps.

Hi,
I went to the maps app on my 4S and typed in a city. Somehow or other, the
compass came up, and that had never happened before. I tapped on tracking, and
heard tracking on, then I tapped again, and heard tracking on with headings.
What does this mean, and why would the compass come up?
