So, let me make sure that I understood it correctly. When the terminal is
ready, I should hold my locked phone nearby, the ApplePay would pop up
automatically despite the locked phone and I should authenticate
transactions.

No, you do not need to unlock your phone first…
What I do is double-click for Apple Pay… Then before authenticating, you can
change the card and then authenticate…
