you plug in the phone, you should hear a short tone to let you know it is
charging.

I agree you should try a different cable and, if you were charging with the
cable plugged into a laptop try a different USB port or, as Feliciano
suggested, try the wall adapter.

should charge no matter the position. Is this with the wall charger, I would
try a hard reset and see if that gets

erase content or settings, simply refreshes the operating
that it should not matter
which way the connector goes into the phone.
