I agree that would be ideal, but since VO depends on touch gestures, which do
not work when fingers or watch is wet, I don't see that happening anytime soon.
But a good request to submit to Apple.

A sighted person can still see some information when the watch is in waterlock
and I would expect that even with waterlock is turned on Voiceover would still
read whatever a sighted person sees on the screen, specifically basic
information about your workout.

I understood that the idea is you cannot use the watch while wet, which is why
you have to use the water lock plus it prevents damage to watch. Drying it off
before turning off water lock is important. I'll be surprised if that is any
different in the 9. No one knows what the redesign for the x
"the screen acting up a bit" is an understatement.
I find the watch is quite useless when water lock is turned on, I also have a
fifth generation Apple Watch and I wear it when doing pool swims which is good,
but if I loose track of my number of laps and I want to check I so far have not
found
Yes I believe ultra has the capability to be worn while diving, just not
sure about the depth that it can handle.

Swimming with it is not an issue ,
Good to know. I’m due to go back for PT in the pool soon, and it would be nice
to track my progress.

Swimming with it is not an issue , these watches are designed to withstand
water pressure for recreational swimming, just do not dive with it..

As long a you put Water Lock on you should have no problem. I think Water Lock
goes on automatically when you select Swimming as your workout, or you can do
it in the Control Center on the watch.

I regularly swim with my watch 5, and apart from the screen acting up a bit
when wet at times, have never had any problems.
