Ibooks can read pdf documents without any problem at all. Same as Adobe Reader.
However, i personally found that IBooks does a better job than Adobe Reader
when reading pdfs, specially those with complecated pdf file like tables.

There is no need to convert them if you have iBooks on your iOS device. I use
iTunes or Mail to save the pdf to iBooks, which reads it with no problems
whatsoever so long as the pdf is accessible.
