I found gmail's server stuff to be quite frustrating. You need to work your way in to gmail's profile handling of messages and tell it to delete messages when you delete them. The default setting is to save all messages on the server. It took me a couple weeks to figure out what was going on. I

My Ipad is downloading mail from 2011 or so, and won't let me get current Gmail mails until I clear all of that out. I've actually turned OFF Mail on my Gmail account--leaving other stuff on--until I deal with it, because as it is, Gmail on my Ipad is only usable as a way to practice dealing

Interesting, I'm using IMAP with Gmail on my iPhone, and only the last 50 messages are downloaded to my iPhone, and even then larger messages are truncated. I have messages in my in box going back to 2011 at the moment, although I'm working at getting those older messages either deleted or filed
