Fine, but I don't see a way to set up Gmail as IMAP in Mac Mail. I'd probably
have to delete the account and re-add it.

On the iPad side, you need apps which handle the file types in order to get
those files from the cloud. Try Pages for documents. It should work, but I
haven't tried it yet. I use iTunes or email the documents to myself.

Just curious, but why do you need to clear out all of that email from
Gmail? I've been using Gmail for years, and I have messages going back
years in various folders on Gmail. This doesn't cause any problems with
the iPhone.

I found gmail's server stuff to be quite frustrating. You need to work your way
in to gmail's profile handling of messages and tell it to delete messages when
you delete them. The default setting is to save all messages on the server. It
took me a couple weeks to figure out what was going on. I
Folders are a purely visual situation. Double tap and hold with one finger on
an app (pass through gesture). After the tritone, slide your finger slowly and
the app will move. Place it on top of another app and a folder will

My Ipad is downloading mail from 2011 or so, and won't let me get current Gmail
mails until I clear all of that out. I've actually turned OFF Mail on my Gmail
account--leaving other stuff on--until I deal with it, because as it is, Gmail
on my Ipad is only usable as a way to practice dealing
On my Macbook, it's set to delete mail from the server after a copy is
downloaded, but it just doesn't do it. I'll have to tackle this from the
website, a site which I find very frustrating as well. *shrug* a project for a
rainy weekend and lots of stress relieving mechanisms.

I changed my Gmail settings to have my deleted messages placed in the
Trash folder. It's been years since I've done this, but I don't recall
it being too difficult. After 60 days (although I'm not sure about the
time frame here) those messages are deleted. I like this actually, since

Sounds like you're using POP. You might want to consider switching to
IMAP if you'll be accessing your email from multiple devices.

Interesting, I'm using IMAP with Gmail on my iPhone, and only the last
50 messages are downloaded to my iPhone, and even then larger messages
are truncated. I have messages in my in box going back to 2011 at the
moment, although I'm working at getting those older messages either
deleted or filed
It just gets a bit frustrating when you want to go from oldest to newest
message.

No, that shouldn't be the case. You should always get most recent messages
first. I don't understand why you're not getting newest messages.

Actually, this can also be an issue with gmail IMAP. IMAP has default setting
of keep all messages, just hide them from the user when they have been deleted.

Hi, David.
I told both Gmail on the server (I think) and Mail on the Mac to delete copies
of messages from the server after download, but no one ever listens. :) So,

Hi Mark,
Remember, iOS is designed primarily to be a touch-screen interface. The way it
handles email is different from what you are use to on the Mac.

Hi, folks:
Thanks to all who've been very helpful to me so far in learning the Ipad 3.
Today, I charged it via the USB cable to my MBP15, and it came up in Itunes
just as it should. I authorized backup over WIFI now, too, so the hard
connection won't be necessary.
Now, I understand that
