Re: Curious about the barometer in iPhone 6?

2014-10-06 Thread RobH.
This is interesting, though don't see how it would help with
height/altitude.

Given the variability of air pressure relative to weather conditions, it
would hardly be accurate. Even planes used to have to zero their altimeter
relative to prevailing conditions before they get a good or accurate fix.
Modern ones probably do better now. And after all that, Siri can work that
out with GPS, too.

RobH. Disappointed, Siri gave me a lecture on what altitude was, and didn't
tell me my position at all. Yet I have been, when using 6.1.4 or whatever
that was.

Hi

Has anybody that owns a iPhone 6 or 6+ looked at the barometer function of
the phone? I am curious as to whether it can be used by users using voice
over? I read somewhere that it is used mainly for elevation, but I am
interested in the weather functions of the barometer, meaning can one get a
reading in inches or milibars like a normal barometer used in weather
stations?

2014-10-06 Thread Jan Kleinhans

Hi

Thanks for this. It is interesting indeed. I read the altitude thing in a
review of the iPhone 6 on the gsm arena website, and also did not quite get
it how that would help, so that's why I was wondering if the barometer was
usable for it real function via voice over?

Thanks all the same.

RE: Voiceover not announcing caller ID since iOS 8 update

2014-10-06 Thread Jesus Garcia
This is a problem apple is aware of though I urge those who are having the
issue to call the access line and file the complaint. Turning on that
setting will fix the announcement when the call first comes in, but will do
nothing about the flicking up gesture to get the caller id to repeat.

Both types of backups save your data. An encrypted backup also saves secure

Ballistic's cases are great. Another advantage they have is that there's a
bumper around the edge of the phone so that the screen isn't flush with the
case. They're also super light not adding much if any real weight to the device.
I don't recall the name of the iPad Air version my wife was looking at, but I
do know that she didn’t' care for Ballistic's offering as there was no
protective flap for the tablet's screen. She instead opted for an oragami case
with a flap. That's more a type of different strokes for different folks thing
though.

Ballistic offers a case called the Tough Jacket for the iPad. I would
strongly encourage you to tactily evaluate the hard cases you are considering.
Since I bought my Ballistic Hard Core iPhone case for the iPhone 5, companies
have begun designing cases to the rigorous specifications of the United States
military. These newer cases are more stronger and durable and exceedingly
protective from what came before it. They are more rugged and protective than
other cases widely marketed. Realize these cases are not for the fashionable or
will fit into skinny guy jeans at an urban nightclub. yet, they protect the i
device very well. I would suggest reading the reviews of hard cases, visiting
stores, or ordering a few online and returning the ones that you didn't choose
as your hard iPad case.

I bought the Ballistic Hard Core case for my iPhone 5 and I haven’t
looked back. Otterbox cases clamp the I device to the case.
Eventually, these clamps can loosen, scratching the glass of the I
device. Ballistic sandwiches the I device between the upper and lower
parts of the case so the I device is entombed into the case. It
doesn’t wiggle ever and impact is absorbed by the entire case. The
iPhone has taken drops and bangs over the two years I have owned it.
Yes, the case makes the iPhone bigger, but it does its job nicely.

If you really want break proof protection, get a Ballistic Hard Core
case. You will not be disappointed.

2014-10-06 Thread Jennie Facer
Hi,

There is a mute switch just above the volume buttons that you can slide back
and forth. That will not mute voiceover, but it will make it so the phone won't
ring. Be aware if you are using iOS 8, there is a bug that effects vibrate
mode. It will only emit one little vibrate then do nothing. This is sort of a
pain in the you-know-what.

Re: Twitter app recommendation

2014-10-06 Thread Wayne Merritt
I would also be interested in knowing an accessible and good to use
Twitter client in iOS 8. I have gone back and forth between the native
Twitter app and Twitterrific 5, and finally started a 30 day trial of
Chicken Nugget on my Windows 7 laptop. I would still like a good iOS
Twitter client to check when on the go, but am finding that I like
using Chicken Nugget when at home.

On 10/4/14, Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan keinohrhasen...@googlemail.com wrote:
Does anyone know of an accessible twitter client for iOS (7 and 8) that
supports autoloading new tweets? I actually can check my timeline only
several times a week but am following a whole bunch of people that really
interest me, so I don't want to miss anything. Besides, clicking this
autoload more tweets button isn't really fun. The thing that disturbs me
with the native twitter app is that you can often find gaps in your
timeline, meaning that many tweets don't load at all. Twitterific is
annoying in the way that the read more hint is only given after you read a

complete tweet, so you constantly have to remember certain tweets.

I actually think that every twitter client has more or less drawbacks, as I

already tried tweetlist and echophone as well.

I actually would like a twitter client offering the following:
 - easy-to-use interface
 - usage of several twitter accounts
 - favoriting, replying to tweets, sending tweets by email and checking out a

person's profile shouldbe reachable easily (like in twitterific)
 - automatically load more tweets without asking
 - unified timeline, like in twitterific, that shows tweets as well as direct

 messages and mentions
 - real muting of persons and hashtags (not like in twitterific where the
tweets are still read to you)
 - of course, really good accessibility with VoiceOver
 - support of instapaper (especially well implemented in the standard twitter

 app)
 - integrated browser with cleaner view of articles (like in twitterific)
 - loading a large number of tweets (very well done in tweetlist)
 - responsiveness (standard twitter app can be sluggish sometimes)
 - easy way to check out activity stream (as far as I know, only possible in

 the standard twitter app)
 - eventually push notifications
 - eventually support of lists

Does such an app exist at all? I already wrote to the developers of
twitterific and was told that they wouldn't change the position of the load

more button, as their users preferred it the way it is. This one was much
 better in previous versions.

 Any recommendations are appreciated.

Re: Problem with new iPhone

2014-10-06 Thread Kristeen Hughes
Again, thanks for all the posts. Joseph Freetech sent me a post off list
yesterday morning. It was a KB article which I followed. The last suggestion
was to connect the iPhone to another computer and try the restoration that way.
That worked! I was ecstatic! My computer could tell me the phone was in
recovery mode and it could begin the process of recovery and restoration, but
after that point I continued to get one of two messages, either a message 17 or
an iPhone not found message. After the phone was out of recovery mode, I
could once again connect it to my computer and finish the whole restore and
update process. The iPhone is now all well and I'm really enjoying it.

I had no intention of getting a new phone, because I still had a year on the
contract, but my iPhone 5 decided it no longer wished to serve me in any
productive way. The home button became almost totally unresponsive, or would
perform a totally different action than I desired or expected.

using iTunes on the computer. It has instructions for bringing up the host

doing a reset will work, and the other steps won't be required.

Ballistic's cases are great. Another advantage they have is that there's a
bumper around the edge of the phone so that the screen isn't flush with the
case. They're also super light not adding much if any real weight to the
device.
I don't recall the name of the iPad Air version my wife was looking at,
but I do know that she didn’t' care for Ballistic's offering as there was no

Ballistic offers a case called the Tough Jacket for the iPad. I would
strongly encourage you to tactily evaluate the hard cases you are
considering. Since I bought my Ballistic Hard Core iPhone case for the
iPhone 5, companies have begun designing cases to the rigorous
specifications of the United States military. These newer cases are more
stronger and durable and exceedingly protective from what came before it.
They are more rugged and protective than other cases widely marketed.
Realize these cases are not for the fashionable or will fit into skinny guy
jeans at an urban nightclub. yet, they protect the i device very well. I
would suggest reading the reviews of hard cases, visiting stores, or
ordering a few online and returning the ones that you didn't choose as your

I bought the Ballistic Hard Core case for my iPhone 5 and I haven’t
looked back. Otterbox cases clamp the I device to the case.
Eventually, these clamps can loosen, scratching the glass of the I
device. Ballistic sandwiches the I device between the upper and lower
parts of the case so the I device is entombed into the case. It
doesn’t wiggle ever and impact is absorbed by the entire case. The
iPhone has taken drops and bangs over the two years I have owned it.
Yes, the case makes the iPhone bigger, but it does its job nicely.

If you really want break proof protection, get a Ballistic Hard Core
case. You will not be disappointed.

well as those integrated in all of the better Garmin GPS units all use a
barometric sensor to give precise elevation readings. Any GPS as well as the
iPhone can give you elevation based on GPS information, but while this is
better now than it was years ago, it is still less accurate than elevation
information based on barometric pressure because of GPS signal time delays
and simply the problem with acquiring enough satellites for an accurate
calculation.

. Typically all one has to do with a barometric altimeter is set the
elevation at a known location, e.g. any airport would do because you can
simply ask the airport authorities or google what the elevation of any
particular airport is. Once set a barometric altimeter will give you
accurate readings as you go up or down in elevation based on air pressure.
This is the same principal as in scuba diving where you get very accurate
depth readings from your depth gauge based on water pressure, pressure at
sea level is 1 bar or approx. 14.5 pounds per square inch and this increases
by 1 bar or 14.5 pounds per square inch for every 33 feet you go down and
the depth gauge messures this pressure and gives your depth in return. A
relatively deep recreational dive of 110 feet means you are exposed to 4 Bar
or approx. 58 pounds per square inch of pressure. If you take an empty 2
Liter pop bottle down there with the cap screwed on tight it will be
squished flat.

You will have to recalibrate a barometric altimeter if there are significant
changes in air pressure due to weather conditions, e.g. a storm causes an
intense low pressure system.

If you want to learn more about this all you have to do is Google something
like How does a barometric altimeter work or How ddo weather conditions
effect barometric altimeters or How to calibrate a barometric altimeter.

Sieghard

This is interesting, though don't see how it would help with
height/altitude.

Given the variability of air pressure relative to weather conditions, it
would hardly be accurate. Even planes used to have to zero their altimeter
relative to prevailing conditions before they get a good or accurate fix.
Modern ones probably do better now. And after all that, Siri can work that

RobH. Disappointed, Siri gave me a lecture on what altitude was, and didn't

Since the native calendar can sometimes be interesting to use, there is an app
called Date Picker, where you can find out what day a particular date falls on.
I dont' recall if that is free or paid. It is very easy to use.

Re: Curious about the barometer in iPhone 6?

2014-10-06 Thread RobH.
Thanks for all this, I'll go read some more about that.

I remember reading a book, a novel, but they were describing how an airport
had to quote their bm pressure on the ground and their altitude to feed into
the aircrafts device to give an accurate value before trying a landing,
especially by instruments.

I don't know how far weather can effect pressure and how much pressure
changes with altitude to see the scale of the issue.
How many millibars per hundred feet of altitude for example, I'm sure 20 or
30 millibars of variability isn't unusual for weather.

Touchtones getting stuck on iPhone 6+

2014-10-06 Thread Cara Quinn
Hi All,

Have looked back through the recent list traffic but have not seen this one
discussed.

I'm running iOS 8.0.2 and am restoring my iPhone 6+ from an iCloud backup. I
say 'am restoring' since the phone still tells me it is restoring on the lock
screen even after several days.

the backup is from my iPhone 5 running iOS 7.1.2 and all looks basically well
except for a very serious issue with the phone keypad both when dialing a phone
number or dialing when on a call already.

What happens is that at any given time, (without warning) keys on the phone
keypad will in essence, stick, so that the tone for said keys will continue to
play after I have released my finger. I have never seen this issue before
through years of using the iPhone. The only ways I have found to stop these
tones (once started) are:

1 try double-tapping the key in question once again. Sometimes however, this
will play the tone for the key again which interferes with either the phone
number I am dialing or the phone directory system I am entering data into.

2 closing the phone app. this sometimes works and sometimes does not.

3 If all else fails I have needed to completely restart the phone to get the
tones to stop being played.

Just as a reference, I have my keyboard settings set to touch typing.

Obviously the above behavior is completely unacceptable and quite serious. So I
would have expected to see others commenting on this here. So unless I am the
only one seeing this, has anyone else had this happen to them at all?

Thanks so much to you All and I hope you are having a wonderful day!

Smiles,

Cara :)

all but impossible to downgrade, there are some work arounds that can
help us persevere until the next major update (IOS 8.1) rumored to
come out on October 20th which will activate Apple Pay and hopefully
include fixes to some of these nasty bugs. We can also discuss the
good things that were introduced in IOS 8, some of which are yet to
come. As an added bonus, we will also be joined by Cara Quinn from
LookTel and owner of the well known and very informative VIPhone Group
Mailing List, who can enhance our discussion by sharing her knowledge
thus helping us to gain a better understanding of how IOS works under
the hood. Trust me, you don’t want to miss this meeting.

Re: Touchtones getting stuck on iPhone 6+

I think we have all experienced it. I had it worse on my 4s, but still
experience it on my six plus. Quite a lot of dsicussion about it on

1 try double-tapping the key in question once again. Sometimes

Re: Readability

2014-10-06 Thread Richard Turner
Hi Mary,
Well, I'd say see if you can find a way to contact the developer because not
only can you not type in the email field, but you can go into the password
field, delete what is there and type in 10 or 11 characters but it still shows
that there are 8 characters.
I would say this is a useless app with VoiceOver.
Have you had anyone try without VoiceOver?

2014-10-06 Thread Tom Lange
For those who don't want to hassle with cliking on the link in the forwarded
message, here's a thumbnail synopsis. Hopefully I got this right. IOS 8 will
slow down older phones like the 4S. IOS 8 is designed for larger displays,
and, that being the case, the extra space required onscreen may preclude proper
use of the onscreen keyboard. IOS 8 requires much more space to install, which
could be a problem on older phones with limited storage. IOS may ruin your
ability to use wi-fi. And, last bun not least, IOS 8 may seriously impact
battery life.

Re: Curious about the barometer in iPhone 6?

2014-10-06 Thread Andy Baracco
I owned many aneroid barometers when i was sighted. The calibration
described below is correct, and you need to recalibrate from time to time.
The old barometers had two pointers. One was stationary, and was the one
that you would set by turning a knob. The other was active and responded to
the pressure changes. if the active pointer read lower than the static one,
that indicated a decrease in pressure, and a marked decrease could indicate
that a storm is coming. Likewise, if the active pointer read higher than the
static one, it usually meant that fair weather was coming.

Subject: RE: Curious about the barometer in iPhone 6?

Hi Rob and Jan,

Altimeters both stand-alone units sold in climbing and outdoor stores as
well as those integrated in all of the better Garmin GPS units all use a
barometric sensor to give precise elevation readings.

And after all that, Siri can work that
out with GPS, too.

RobH. Disappointed, Siri gave me a lecture on what altitude was, and didn't
tell me my position at all. Yet I have been, when using 6.1.4 or whatever
that was.

Hi

Has anybody that owns a iPhone 6 or 6+ looked at the barometer function of
the phone? I am curious as to whether it can be used by users using voice

interested in the weather functions of the barometer, meaning can one get a
reading in inches or milibars like a normal barometer used in weather

2. How easy is it to change and edit your sheet or workbook with Voiceover,

information that is best to be written and stored in an excel type program.
Can somebody tell me these informations about either Numbers or Microsoft
 Excel for iPad?
 1. How easy is it to find and enter data in a cell? Either Numbers or
 Microsoft Excel for iPad?
 2. How easy is it to change and edit your sheet or workbook with Voiceover,
for instance, if you mess up and enter something in the wrong column or row?
 3. Any additional opinions about these, or either one of these apps?
I'd really appreciate responses. I hope I can reach this list.
Thank you so much for your time and assistance!

Hi Richard,
No. I have not had anyone try this app without voiceover enabled. I wanted
first to make sure that it wasn't just something I was doing wrong or
overlooking. I will try to write the developer and see if I get a response. Of
course, I am not running iOS eight on this 5S. But I doubt that having iOS 8
would improve things.

Re: Curious about the barometer in iPhone 6?

Hi

Thank you for a well explained function, makes perfect sense to me. Now, do
you know the rest of the answer, does the barometer indeed give air pressure
on the iPhone 6 in inches or milibars, and, can voice over tell us what the
readings are? I just enjoy all the weather related things, and this
function on a phone would have me very happy indeed.

Hi Rob and Jan,

Altimeters both stand-alone units sold in climbing and outdoor stores as
well as those integrated in all of the better Garmin GPS units all use a
barometric sensor to give precise elevation readings.

Re: [Blindgeekzone] FW: 5 IOS 8 Flaws You Should Know

2014-10-06 Thread Jan Kleinhans

Hi

All of this is rather interesting, but I can not help to wonder why apple
then would include support for the 4S if all of this might indeed happen to
it? To me, at least, this does not make real sense, especially if functions
like wifi
might be impacted. Just my opinion though. I still use a 4S, and will
wait for all the bugs to be cleared up, and then I might venture into
updating it, seeing what will happen to it after that.

For those who don't want to hassle with cliking on the link in the forwarded
message, here's a thumbnail synopsis. Hopefully I got this right. IOS 8
will slow down older phones like the 4S. IOS 8 is designed for larger
displays, and, that being the case, the extra space required onscreen may
preclude proper use of the onscreen keyboard. IOS 8 requires much more space
to install, which could be a problem on older phones with limited storage.
IOS may ruin your ability to use wi-fi. And, last bun not least, IOS 8 may
seriously impact battery life.

Hi Jan,

I don't think it does, the barometric measurement is probably strictly used
for elevation. However, any good weather app should give you barometric
pressure and as long as you don;'t live a long way above or below wherever
the nearest sensors are located it should be pretty accurate. Alternatively,
the Netatmo Weather Station will give you barometric pressure. If you search
for Netatmo in the archives you can find a number of posts about it.
