RE: What is the difference between KNFB Reader, and KNFB reader Enterprise?

2017-06-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Chris,

At the top of the app description of KNFB Reader Enterprise it says the
following:

To activate and use KNFB Reader Enterprise you need a license with valid
username and password.
If you do not yet have these, please contact your KNFBReader Enterprise
distributor or site administrator.
A list of distributors where you can buy your license can be found on the KNFB
Reader website www.knfbreader.com.
You can also buy your license directly from the appstore by installing
knfbReader instead of KNFB Reader Enterprise

Also, once you get down to where the price of the app is listed, KNFB Reader
Enterprise says “Free”, but this of course is not because it is in fact free,
but because the Enterprise version apparently is designed for companies who may
want to purchase and manager multiple licenses. I assume KNFB Reader allows
them to purchase said licenses and the user can then activate them with a login.
Apart from that the app itself is exactly the same.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hello folks,

there any significant differences between the two?
I am just curious!

RE: which GPS app should I buy?

2017-06-18 Thread Mike Ulrich
One other comment to make on the Nearby explorer app:
It will take up far more storage space on the IPhone, as compared to the Seeing
Eye app. This is because the Near By Explorer app has everything on the IPhone
itself, not cloud based such as the Seeing Eye app. BTW: I now have one year of
the Seeing Eye app on my 128 gig SE. But when I run out of that subscription; I
won't renew it, instead I'll purchase the Near By Explorer app for $79.99.
Since I now have plenty of storage; this ain't no problem.
I've recently done far more research into the whole blind GPS dilemma, and in
my opinion; Nearby Explorer sounds far more usable/and way cool too! A real
winner; hands down!

Well,

It depends what GPS functions you're looking for: orientational, navigational,
or both and what you're willing to spend.

If you're wanting both orientational and navigational gps, your choices are
"Seeing Eye Gps", and "Nearby Explorer."

In this writer's opinion, "Nearby Explorer is a much better option than Seeing
Eye GPS;
1:  It's much cheeper;
2: Updates to the program are much more frequent.
3: It is, in my opinion, a much more complete GPS system than Seeing-Eye GPS.

If, on the otherhand, you're only interested in orientational GPS, by far, your
best option is, again in my opinion, BlindSquare. It's been around now for
some time and is a very mature product. It also supports the "What Three
Words" service.

Hope this helps.

I agree with Mike, although I don't have a lot of experience with Seeing Eye;
it's price alone of $300 is a great deal more than the $80 of Nearby Explorer.

I believe the support for Seeing Eye may be better (in that you can pick up a
phone and call someone, or email their support department), where-as Nearby
Explorer's only support is a mailing list (nothing else). The lack of support
is perhaps my only significant criticism offered for Nearby Explorer.

If money is very important, you can try the $20 Blind Square ... not my
favorite because the maps it uses for intersections are "free" ones created by
volunteers, and so often quite incorrect, but it's price is the best.

Hth,

Chip

This is an actually the Google assistant. It is the Google app that comes

RE: Sonos speakers and iPhone.

2017-06-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Mike,

I know the Sonos Connect which is more like a traditional amplifier where you
hook up speakers with speaker wire has 110 Watts (2 * 55 Watts) of Class D
amplification.
I don't think Sonos is providing this information for the Play 1, Play 3 and
Play 5.
Keep in mind that these are not bluetooth speakers, you don't actually play
something on you riPhone and send it to these speakers unless you had an
Airport Express connected to one of the players which has an input hence
allowing you to use Airplay.
I can tell you for sure that especially a Play 5 goes as loud as you would want
it to go and they do sound great and if you were to set up a pair of Play 5 as
a stereo pair then volume is simply not an issue unless your living room is
1,000 square feet or larger. I can only recommend these, there are places where
Sonos is sold and where you could go to listen to it or you could simply order
any of the players directly from Sonos without risk as they offer a very
generous 45-day return policy, no questions asked, just make sure you unpack it
carefully, keep all the packing material and take notes or make an audio
recording as you unpack it so you know how to put it back properly. I think
they even pay the return shipping.
Also remember that these are not battery operated speakers, they are wireless
in that they get their music via your WiFi network, but they do need to be
plugged into a wall outlet.
I used to be very much an audio file and at one point did have money from a
settlement which I partly used to buy a $30,000 stereo system and those were
1995/1996 Dollars. I still have that system, but replaced the $2,500 Sonic
Frontiers CD Transport with a $299 Sonos Connect and it sounds great. Of course
I still run the digital signal from the Coax Digital output on the Sonos
through a Sonic Frontiers tube DA converter, a high-end electronic corssover
and then to a Sonic Frontiers Power 2 hybrid tube/transistor amp and from there
to a set of custom built satellites and also to a Bryston 4NRB power amp which
drives a pair of custom built transmission line 12 inch subwovers.
I could now spend $1,700 and buy a set of Sonos Play 5 and a Sonos Sub and be
extremely happy with that sound, the Play 5 sounds great, a set sounds better
and add the $700 Sonos Wireless Sub and you have an outstanding music system.
Does it sound as good as my system downstairs? No, of course not, but my system
downstairs which cost 18 times what this setup costs does also not sound 18
times better and of course spending $30,000 is not what most people (including
me today) could spend.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hi Seigard, I really would be interested in just how loud, and how the sound
quality, is of these Sonos speakers really are. I don't mind spending good
money on perfectly sounding loud Bluetooth speakers.
I've just recently purchased a "200 watts" Bluetooth speaker. Only to find out
that the "200 watts" of today, is nowhere near the "200 watts" of yesteryear.
Talk about making you feel like an old man!

So here's my question:
What is the for real wattage of any of these Sonos Bluetooth speakers? I would
plunk down good money for a BT speaker that would shake you out of your
underwears!
But just show me that speaker and I'd buy it hands down.

Thanks much, and curiously awaiting a response!.Mike

Agree with Robin, accessibility of the iPhone app is fantastic and complete,
sound quality is awesome and I have not yet seen another speaker which supports
this many online sources both free and paid, I think Sonos supports over 30
services including Tune In Radio, iHeart Radio, Slacker, SoundCloud, Apple
Music, Google Play Music, Amazon Music, Spotify, Deezer, Pandora, Tidal, Sirus
XM and dozens of others.
You can even add multiple account for the same music service, e.g. if you have
Apple Music and you want to add your own account and that of your wife or other
family member then this is also possible.
Here is what they say directly on their website, keep in mind that I am in
Canada and Pandora and probably other services are not available here which is
why they don't show up in the list, despite that there are 39 services in this
list and 5 more under Sonos Labs:

All the music on earth. And then some.

Sonos was created by music lovers. For music lovers. Which means we want Sonos
to play absolutely all the music you love - no matter where it comes from.

Another consideration is where in the world you are located. You do not say
and this is an important consideration for anyone asking for app
recommendations. Nearby Explorer is only currently available in North America
while the other two have maps for other parts of the world. Also, you do not
say if you need the app in a language other than English. Nearby explorer
supports only English while Blind Square supports more than 20 languages.
English though is an international language spoken throughout the world by
educated peple.

RE: White Noise App

2017-06-18 Thread Mike Ulrich
Hi Chip,

Wow, those headphones sound really trick! Although I’m good with using one of
my Bluetooth speakers located in my front room, when I’m sleeping, or trying to
sleep that is, back in my bedroom. This set up with the Deep Sleep app works
really good for me; playing through my Marshall Kilburn BT speaker!

Chip, I really really appreciate your input on this thread/question; about
white noise apps. You once again came through with a real winner!

Hi Mike,

Please allow me to also heartily recommend a set of special sleeping headphones
(which I buy from Amazon for around $20) called Cozi Phones. They are two soft
foam speakers embedded between two sheets of elastic material which is shaped
into a headband. You can slide the two ear pieces up/down, forward and back,
until they’re placed over your ears. They are extremely comfortable, with a
specially strengthened cord exitting through the rear over your neck. They
never come off of my ears during the night, no matter how much I toss and turn.
They are absolutely great, and I consider them to be my discovery of the year
for myself.

As you say, good sleeping!

Chip

it,; after another sleepless in Cape Coral night!

With the untimely death of my 16 gig 5S, my newly acquired 128 gig SE has more

Hopefully sleeping soon in Cape Coral!..Mike

Thanks for the recommendations. I went searching before I found these, and I
found a very accessible free app named: White Noise and Deep Sleep Sounds for
You and Baby”. When you install it, it then shows its name as just “Deep Sleep
Free”.

It has white, pink, and brown noise choices, as well as mechanical sounds such
as a fan, and a selection of nature sounds as well. I’m quite happy with it.

RE: New siri voices in IOS 11

2017-06-18 Thread Mike Ulrich
I actually personally know of many of the sightling variety that constantly use
siri. Heck, even Rush Limbaugh uses Siri too.

Just imagine you have to drive from point A to point B. I’m talking a major
road trip; 500 miles +. Those Sightlings can just hit the home button and say;
Siri, where can I find a place for breakfast; providing you have Location
Services turned on, and bingo; you know where to head to. Siri will even ask
you if you want driving directions to her suggestions for breakfast joints. Or
she’ll ask you if you want to call them.

If I hadn’t gone blind, I’d call that hands free assistance. Plus way big time
cool too!

Siri benefits everyone, and that’s a nice comforting fact.

See what I’m saying?

Hi Sieghard,

I have been thinking about what you have been saying about Siri. I know I agree
with you that I wish Apple would make it do more. But I am wondering in the
scheme of things I wonder how many sighted people use Siri like the visually
impaired do. I know my wife does not use Siri and I cannot think of one sighted
person I know ever use it. So I am thinking Apple does not improve Siri just
for the blind and they don’t get much input from the sighted users, so that is
why I am thinking they don’t improve it. Just my thought on this.

I’m surprised to see so much attention devoted towards the more expressive Siri

and interaction, specifically with understanding, context, and meaningful
intelligence has a lot to be desired. The only advantage Siri has is that it
was first, but all other voice-based assistants are smarter, helpful, and
useful. However, to be fair, even the best of the “Assistants” today would not
last as a human Assistant in a job. We’ve been promised a bright future with
the voice user interfaces, but a lot more resources and time needs to be
realized before the “Year Million” is our reality.

many millions of people in the US have bought the Echo or the Google Home,
voice is the only way you can really interact with these things so obviously
people must do it.
I just think Apple is typical Apple here, they do things in their own way and
time and don’t really care what people say. Look how long it took them to
announce a speaker, now they have and they are not trying to make it sound like
it goes right up against the Echo or Google Home, but they position it as an
audio file speaker which is also smart and once they do in fact make SIRI a lot
smarter which they will in their own time it will become more popular.
Voice interface is definitely the up and coming thing and everybody does it and
in time even people who currently may not use it will do so in a few years.

RE: Sonos speakers and iPhone.

2017-06-18 Thread Mike Ulrich

Sonos keeps growing. Some names you’ll recognize right away. Others may be less
familiar, but still worth exploring. Remember, service availability varies by

You are very wrong here, Ed, just because your wife doesn’t use it and maybe a
few other people you know does not mean sighted people don’t use SIRI. I think
you would need a somewhat larger statistical sample to draw an accurate
conclusion as to how many sighted people use SIRI. If people would not use SIRI
that would mean also Android users would not use Google Assistant or Windows
users would not use Cortana. If this was so companies like Amazon or Google and
now Microsoft would not spend so much time and effort in developing these
digital assistants and in coming up with smartspeakers and what have you. How
many millions of people in the US have bought the Echo or the Google Home,
voice is the only way you can really interact with these things so obviously
people must do it.

Regards,

Sieghard

Hi Sieghard,

I have been thinking about what you have been saying about Siri. I know I agree
with you that I wish Apple would make it do more. But I am wondering in the
scheme of things I wonder how many sighted people use Siri like the visually
impaired do. I know my wife does not use Siri and I cannot think of one sighted
person I know ever use it. So I am thinking Apple does not improve Siri just
for the blind and they don’t get much input from the sighted users, so that is
why I am thinking they don’t improve it. Just my thought on this.

I know that they are reporting this just as they are reporting how Apple has
and is hiring experts in autonomous/self-driving car technology. As far as SIRI
goes, however, I want them to show that they are making some progress, it just
seem sso ignorant that they are just not really improving SIRI but they of
course know that is what everybody wants.

I’m surprised to see so much attention devoted towards the more expressive Siri
voices. I view it as a nice touch to the presnetaiton layer, but the structure
and interaction, specifically with understanding, context, and meaningful
intelligence has a lot to be desired. The only advantage Siri has is that it
was first, but all other voice-based assistants are smarter, helpful, and
useful. However, to be fair, even the best of the “Assistants” today would not
last as a human Assistant in a job. We’ve been promised a bright future with

It has white, pink, and brown noise choices, as well as mechanical sounds such
as a fan, and a selection of nature sounds as well. I’m quite happy with it.

RE: which GPS app should i buy?

2017-06-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
And currently (unless it ended already) Seeing Eye GPS is $100 off, so $199
instead of $299 for the XT version which you buy only once. If you were able to
combine this with some discounted iTunes Gift Cards you could get it for little
more than double of what Nearby Explorer costs and I agree that the breadcrums
feature should be very useful for many people who need to cross open spaces.

Sieghard

Hi Sieghard,
I have been thinking about what you have been saying about Siri. I know I agree
with you that I wish Apple would make it do more. But I am wondering in the
scheme of things I wonder how many sighted people use Siri like the visually
impaired do. I know my wife does not use Siri and I cannot think of one sighted
person I know ever use it. So I am thinking Apple does not improve Siri just
for the blind and they don’t get much input from the sighted users, so that is
why I am thinking they don’t improve it. Just my thought on this.

seem sso ignorant that they are just not really improving SIRI but they of

I’m surprised to see so much attention devoted towards the more expressive Siri
voices. I view it as a nice touch to the presnetaiton layer, but the structure
and interaction, specifically with understanding, context, and meaningful
intelligence has a lot to be desired. The only advantage Siri has is that it
was first, but all other voice-based assistants are smarter, helpful, and
useful. However, to be fair, even the best of the “Assistants” today would not
last as a human Assistant in a job. We’ve been promised a bright future with
the voice user interfaces, but a lot more resources and time needs to be
realized before the “Year Million” is our reality.

RE: Sonos speakers and iPhone.

2017-06-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Streaming services.
Free. Premium. Curated. On-demand. The list of streaming music services on
Sonos keeps growing. Some names you’ll recognize right away. Others may be less
familiar, but still worth exploring. Remember, service availability varies by
region so click for details to find out if it’s playing in your area.
Already subscribe to a service? Great. Just add it to Sonos using the app, sign

A very long time if immigration levels do not change substantially.
The driver was an Indian national and hungry for work but enjoys the

will these ride share companies ever create a profitable business

Re: which GPS app should i buy?

2017-06-18 Thread Kelly Pierce
Another consideration is where in the world you are located. You do
not say and this is an important consideration for anyone asking for
app recommendations. Nearby Explorer is only currently available in
North America while the other two have maps for other parts of the
world. Also, you do not say if you need the app in a language other
than English. Nearby explorer supports only English while Blind
Square supports more than 20 languages. English though is an
international language spoken throughout the world by educated peple.

A recent update to the Uber app requires end users to give permission
to Uber to track your location when the app is in the background. I
refused to give my permission and was able to schedule a ride. Before
I confirmed it though, I switched to Lyft and requested a ride from
them. I am disgusted by Uber’s business practices and am thankful to
have a choice. My ride was only $3.65 from downtown Chicago to my
north side home. Normally it is about $12.

RE: White Noise App

2017-06-18 Thread Chip Orange

Chip

Happy sleeping Chip! I finally just now downloaded this app, wouldn’t you know
it,; after another sleepless in Cape Coral night!

With the untimely death of my 16 gig 5S, my newly acquired 128 gig SE has more
than enough room for me to finally add this what seems to be cool app!

I really like Nature Space, but I too am looking for "simpler" sounds (such as
a soft hum and/or a soft hiss, or the sound of an old fashoned box fan running).

Thanks,

Hi all.
I'm trying to listen to a baseball game on my apple TV using airplay between my

tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app. No go. Any other suggesttions to
try? It's worked before.
Thanks.

RE: which GPS app should i buy?

2017-06-18 Thread Jim Noseworthy

Eye GPS;
1:  It's much cheeper;

I agree with Mike, although I don't have a lot of experience with Seeing Eye;
it's price alone of $300 is a great deal more than the $80 of Nearby Explorer.

Hth,

Chip

I suspect that Apple's very private Siri will improve a lot when they manage to
put a lot of Siri's language recognition on a chip integrated into our iPhones.
I do hear that work is underway on this. But tediously underperforming

2017-06-18 Thread Mary Otten
Some of the problems with Siri have to do with privacy, and apples insistence
on it, where as Google is quite the opposite. So there are some trade-offs
here. I do also wish that Siri would become better, but not at the expense of
my data going to any Tom Dick and Harry who wants to buy it from Google or
Google using it for their own purposes, which are all about advertising. We
need a happy medium here we're privacy is first, but robust AI is also

Re: which GPS app should i buy?

2017-06-18 Thread Mary Otten
Seeing Eye GPS does not have direct phone support. They do for their other
products, but not for this one. On the other hand, right now, it is $200, not
$300, and they have just introduced a breadcrumb feature, which should make it
extremely useful for people who need to navigate in areas such as college
campuses or other large open spaces where streets are nonexistent or can be
misleading. So for that alone, I think it deserves a serious look. That and
it's interface is less cluttered also, of course it requires that you have a
good cell connection, because maps are all online, whereas nearby makes you
download Maps which take up a lot of space. Maybe not a big deal, depending on
the size of your iPhone and how much storage you have left. They both have
their strong points.

RE: which GPS app should i buy?

2017-06-18 Thread Chip Orange
I agree with Mike, although I don't have a lot of experience with Seeing Eye;
it's price alone of $300 is a great deal more than the $80 of Nearby Explorer.

Hth,

Chip

In my opinion, nearby explorer is by far the best one, it provides the
most automatic feedback, much better than the seeing eye app, I would
go with nearby explorer for sure.

RE: Learning to code for IOS and MAC

Check out books from BookShare; I believe you need a Mac in order to have the
development environment which then allows you to use Swift to code for IOS.

RE: New siri voices in IOS 11

2017-06-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

We’ve been promised a bright future with
the voice user interfaces, but a lot more resources and time needs to be
realized before the “Year Million” is our reality.

Re: Navigating google sheets

2017-06-18 Thread Brandon Olivares
I've found that Google has great documentation, and usually just by googling
the question, I can get to the proper documentation in a few seconds.

For instance, by googling how to insert links in Google Sheets, I found a
document that said it's not possible on IOS, but you can do it on the computer.

Everything you mention is quite easy on the Mac. Actually the only one I've
found to not be possible is to move rows or columns. But everything else is.

Good. Where have you found guidance for performing tasks such as

· going to a specific cell

· inserting links

· moving rows and columns

scrolling cells, and

more

I would be happy to know either keyboard commands or gestures. Does Google have
directions for this, including keyboard commands? If they haven’t documented
this, has someone else?

Yeah I won't disagree its not perfect, but when I got my job a few months ago,
well I basically had to learn pretty quickly how to use Google Docs. I had been
asked to put together a worksheet with some information, and I prefer to not
give excuses if I can help it, so I learned how to use it.

I agree with your, but as I'm a copywriter who works remotely, the team uses google docs and google sheets. Our work is aisigned on the spreadsheet, and we post our google docs links on the spreadsheet when we are done.
