Re: advise on updating phone.

2022-10-16 Thread Kelly Pierce
Here are the numbers. The iPhone 13 Pro has 75 hours of audio playback
on a full battery. The 14 pro has the same 75 hours of battery life.
The iPhone 14 Pro Max has the same 95 hours of audio playback as the
13 Pro Max. tests and evaluations by technology publications have
found that Apple’s claims are largely accurate. The best practical
approach I have found for blind iPhone users wanting more battery life
is to buy a Slim 2 5,000 mA battery bank by PowerAdd. The battery can
charge a regular iPhone 1.5 or 2 times before being drained. It is the
size of two lighters taped together or a lipstick tube. This fits in
a pocket and costs less than $20.

If you want an iPhone 14 Pro, then just buy an iPhone 14 Pro. However,
there’s not a battery life justification for such a purchase.

One advantage of USBC over lightning is simply one cord for multiple things.
I've got bluetooth speakers, and bluetooth headsets that use USBC for charging.
I carry a portable power bank with me, and inside the case of my power bank, I
carry multiple cables, a lightning to USBC cable to charge my iPhone, and
another USBC to USBC cable to charge other devices. If I had an iPhone with
USBC, then I could carry only one cable with me, that would charge my phone and
other things as well. The less cables you have to deal with, the better.

The 14 Pro actually does use the A16 chip whereas the iPhone 13 Pro (and all
other iPhone 13) use the A15.

It is the regular iPhone 14 and 14 Plus which use the same A15 chip as your
iPhone 13 Pro.

I think personally upgrading from a 13 Pro to a 14 Pro is a complete waste of
money, but it's your money I guess. With a 1-year old 13 Pro you should still
get great battery life and while Apple has maybe increased the battery size in
the 14 Pro by a bit and they always say the new phones get better battery life,
I really can't see it making a difference worth spending hundreds of Dollars to
upgrade.

I have an iPhone 11 and I won't even upgrade, my battery capacity is getting
down there so at best I'll spend whatever it costs here in Canada to put a new
battery into my iPhone 11. Otherwise my iPhone 11 works great, yes, I don't
have the LiDAR sensor or MagSafe, but given that next year's iPhone 15 will
have a USB-C charging port I'll wait and of course it will have other
improvements, one according to the rumours maybe the fact that next year's A17
chip which will be in the 15 Pro will most likely be based on 2 Nanometer
architecture which may result in a much bigger improvement between this year's
A16 and next year's A17 than what you get if you upgrade from last year's A15
to this year's A16. In fact, the speed advantage is so small even in the
benchmark tests that you would never notice a real world difference.

Hi all,
have a 13 pro currently.
Am thinking to update to a 14 pro max for better battery life.
Sales guy says if I update to a 14 pro I should get better battery life than
the 13 pro since the tests Apple run are in a controled environment.
I doubt this.

Re: Attachment query

2022-10-16 Thread Anna Dresner
Hi Anthony,

If you double-tap the attachment, a screen with playback controls should open.
There should also be a share button you can use to send the file elsewhere,
save it to a folder in Files or Dropbox, etc.

Best,
Anna

Re: tv app and audiodescription in IOS 16

2022-10-16 Thread Richard Turner
Do you have audio description turned on under settings, accessibility?
I do not have that issue with The TV app and I am on iOS 16.0.2.
If that setting is on under accessibility, you won't have to enable it for each
episode.

Unable to read passwords in 1Password app

2022-10-16 Thread Tai Tomasi
I upgraded to 1Password eight and I seem to be unable to read passwords in the
new app going character by character. In the old app, when you double tapped on
a password, you could click a button to reveal it. Does anyone know how to read
passwords in the new version? Right now, I have to copy and paste the password
into a note which is not a fun workaround. Thanks.

Re: Smart Battery for iPhone 14 Pro?

2022-10-16 Thread Tai Tomasi
Yes, I have the MagSafe battery from Apple, as well as the one from Anker. The
anchor battery seems to charge it much quicker, but it charging cable is USB-C.
The Apple battery uses a lightning cable. Both are great for extra power during
the day. That said, I haven’t needed it as much with my 14 Pro because of the
larger battery capacity. I mainly used the Apple battery with my old 13 mini.

RE: Strange issue with my app switcher

2022-10-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Katrina,

First of all, if your iPhone 8 is not giving you a good experience any more
than by all means, upgrade to an iPhone 14 or 14 Pro. Actually I would probably
not recommend the regular iPhone 14 because it uses the same chip as the
iPhone 13 family of phones, the A15, and while it has crash detection (should
you ever be in a car accident which of course I hope will never happen) and it
supports the emergency SOS via satellite feature, but that also is probably a
really unimportant feature for most users.
Depending on how comfortable you ae spending the money for a 14 Pro I would
actually say you could see what sort of deals are coming up for the iPhone 13
Pro when Black Friday rolls around. As I said, you would get the same chip as a
regular iPhone 14, you would get very good battery life and you would also get
the LiDAR sensor which allows features like door detection to work. You would
also get this on the iPhone 14 Pro of course, but once again, you always pay a
premium for the latest phone and unless you absolutely wanted the latest, the
iPhone 13 Pro might be a great choice. The iPhone 14 Pro also has the "always
on display" but again this is of little concern for a blind person and I can't
speak too much about this "dynamic island" which I believe sort of replaces the
status bar or maybe it's in addition to the status bar, but I haven't really
read much about it from the perspective of a blind user.

By the way, I am not sure if the ability to ask Siri to reboot somehow is not
available on the iPhone 8 or 8 Plus, somebody else who has an iPhone 8 or 8
Plus and who has upgraded to iOS 16 would have to chime in to confirm. Of
course I am running the iOS 16.1 Public Beta so it's always possible this was
only added there, but I can ask Siri to reboot and I can also ask Siri to shut
down my phone and after a verbal confirmation it will do either the reboot or
the shut-down.

Good luck,
Sieghard

Subject: RE: Strange issue with my app switcher

Thank you Sieghard so much! As soon as I read what you said about only needing
to hold in on the side button, I recalled being corrected about this before. 
Ugh! My old brain is losing or mixing up information more and more these days.
☹ Do you know if there was ever a time when we had to hold in on both the down
volume and side buttons? If not, where did I get that from, and why can't I
let it go? Anyway, after doing it correctly, the phone did reset; no
improvement with the app switcher, but at least for now, I only need to double
tap on notifications.

FYI, I had tried resetting network settings; process carried out fine, but
again no improvement. Also, Siri won't reboot for me, no matter how I phrase
the request; the responses include something like I can't do that, I don't
understand, and BTW Siri doesn't speak those responses...I have to swipe to
read what is on the screen. Could Siri not cooperating with my request to
reboot, and the app switcher issue, be due to my having an older phone, an
iPhone 8?

My iPhone 8 is not performing as well as I would like; huge issue is the
battery, so that is why I'm tempted to purchase the 14 Pro. I know you and
others recommend those with more current models wait to get a new phone next
year, but again the iPhone 8 is not performing well. I'm hesitating to make
the purchase as it seems like a huge challenge to deal with the IOS 16 learning
curve, changes due to no home button, configuring a new phone, etc. When the
Apple employee said people are "not able to access the app switcher and control
center when using voiceover", It caused me to back off. But, it seems you and
others aren't having that kind of problem so he probably was mistaken, or I
misheard him. Anyway, I guess I need to have faith all will ultimately be fine
and make the purchase, as I really need better performance and because I wonder
if a newer phone will function better with IOS 16.

Until I make the purchase, fingers crossed that IOS 16.1 will remove some
annoyances.

Hello Katrina,

First of all, it sounds to me like maybe something went not quite right with
your update because I have not heard of any issues with people being able to
power off their phone in the usual way, e.g. press volume up, press volume down
and then press and hold the side button for about a second or two until the
power off screen comes up.

You mention the "double tap to power off", "emergency call" and "cancel"
screen. Just FYI, there is no emergency call on that screen and hasn't been for
some time.

Also, you say to do a hard reset

RE: Smart Battery for iPhone 14 Pro?

2022-10-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
There are several options for MagSafe batteries, not sure what you mean by
"smart" batteries. If I had a phone which had the MagSafe feature I would
certainly want to get an external battery which can be attached this way, no
more fussing around with c ables, you just hold the battery to the back of the
phone and it snaps in place, what could be easier.

RE: advise on updating phone.

2022-10-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Subject: advise on updating phone.

Hi all,
have a 13 pro currently.
Am thinking to update to a 14 pro max for better battery life.
Sales guy says if I update to a 14 pro I should get better battery life than
the 13 pro since the tests Apple run are in a controled environment.
I doubt this.
>From what I gather the 14 pro plus isn't an update to the 13 pro max since it
>still uses the same chip and not the updated one.

Thoughts?
TIA.
