A note on iCloud Mail, third party clients and two step verification

2014-10-10 Thread Christopher Hallsworth

Hi all

If you do not have two step verification enabled on your Apple ID, you
can safely ignore this message. If you do, I have a note for you. The
below took effect as of today.

If you use third party clients such as Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla
Thunderbird to manage your iCloud Mail account, you must now generate an
app specific password before you can use it again. Previously it was
possible to use your Apple ID password to log into iCloud Mail even if
you have two step verification enabled. For good reasons of course this
now no longer works and instead you must do the above. To do so, go to

http://appleid.apple.com
sign in with your Apple ID, verify your identity, click the passwords
and security tab then click generate app specific password link.

Thank you for reading.

Yes, it is exactly what I am doing. I don't have my iPhone full, but I am
not going to install IOs8, until they fix all those bugs. It is something
that I recommend to every body. IOs 8 has good things, but the accessibility
is something very important to us, so we need to wait a little bit, to enjoy

No point in doing Apple a favour if you're not also doing yourself a

for reasons of favourite app compatibility or interest in extra features

fixed. This I'm afraid is not part of real life as far as software goes.
All software will have bugs no matter how good the developers are,

Questions about Using a Braille display with an I-Device

2014-10-10 Thread Kerri Kosten
Hi Everyone:

I am considering purchasing a braille display and pairing it with my

Currently, I have a very old, very outdated Pacmate from 2007 that I
haven't used in like two years.
Because the cost of a traditional blindness notetaker (such as say the
Braille Sense u2) is like $5,000 I was considering purchasing a
braille display and just paring it with my Iphone.
Does anyone do this and if so how does it work for you?
Is it a viable option?
How does it do when you have to take notes in an hour-long class or meeting?
Do most of the braille displays have a way for you to take notes on
them internally or do you have to use an app on the Iphone for taking
notes?
Besides being able to take notes and read them in braille, another
thing I really miss doing is reading books from say Bookshare, BARD,
or I-Books with a braille display.
Does reading novels/books from these sites work well using a braille
display and an Iphone?
Thanks,
Kerri

Re: Questions about Using a Braille display with an I-Device

2014-10-10 Thread Brett
Hi,

I often use my braille display to take notes in meetings at Work. It works
quite well, as long as your not too worried about formatting. If you haven't
typed anything in a while, just type a space and delete it, to prevent your
display from going to sleep. Your braille display will go to sleep after 10
minutes of inactivity.

I use notes on the iPhone when taking notes in meetings, because if you sync
your iPhone with itunes, your notes will appear in outlook. You can then copy
the note to notepad or word and format it then save it to your computer.

I have read braille books from BookShare and books from iBooks with my display,
both work quite well.

The only thing to keep in mind is that iOS8 has issues with bluetooth devices.
I haven't yet used my display with iOS8, so hopefully someone who has will
chime in here to let us know how braille displays perform under iOS8.

Hope this helps,
Brett.

Yes, it is exactly what I am doing. I don't have my iPhone full, but I am
not going to install IOs8, until they fix all those bugs. It is something
that I recommend to every body. IOs 8 has good things, but the accessibility
is something very important to us, so we need to wait a little bit, to enjoy
the good things of IOs8.

I use to lament the fact that my iPhone 5 was too full of stuff, and looked
forward to the 128 gig iPhone 6. Now, I am keeping it too full on purpose,
so that Apple can't download IOS 8 onto it automatically, until they get
some of the bugs fixed, and I am ready to install it.

Chris,

No point in doing Apple a favour if you're not also doing yourself a
favour, or doing it for your own interest. When people need to upgrade,
for reasons of favourite app compatibility or interest in extra features
offered, for example, they will. latest isn't necessarily, nor always,
greatest. Not everybody has the time and patience and technical nous to
deal with bugs and errors.

Thanks all. The reason I posted this is I am seeing a lot of people not
upgrading for absolutely no reason at all other than until the bugs are
fixed. This I'm afraid is not part of real life as far as software goes.
All software will have bugs no matter how good the developers are,
including those working for major companies like Apple. So waiting till
all bugs are fixed is like waiting till the world ends.

Re: Questions about Using a Braille display with an I-Device

2014-10-10 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi all.

I like using my phone for taking notes together with a braille display.

It depends on how you have set up your braille display if it will go to sleep.

It also depends on how many cells a display needs to have.

I tend to recommend a 32 cells display from human ware (Brailliant 32 bi) this
display has in my opinion only one drawback, it can sometimes lose the
connection to the phone while typing, this is a problem, but one of the only
problems that I have. Braille edge, u2 and focus are better at staying
connected, but in my opinion both braille edge and focus are to long, and focus
has also a problem when you wants to go to the next display line. I guess you
are from the u.s. and there are some other displays available.

In IOS 8 it works really well to read books from ibooks with the braille
display. I guess it also still works fine from bookshare, if read2go does not
work anymore voicedream do, and voicedream is really great with a braille
display.
Best regards Annie.

I have read braille books from BookShare and books from iBooks with my
 display, both work quite well.

The only thing to keep in mind is that iOS8 has issues with bluetooth
devices. I haven't yet used my display with iOS8, so hopefully someone who
has will chime in here to let us know how braille displays perform under
 iOS8.

 Hope this helps,

There is a serious delay when inputting braille on iOS 8. But reading braille
is just fine. Hopefully the input problem will be resolved in iOS 8.1, but who
knows.
The new Vario Ultra braille displays from Baum are very nice. You have a
choice of 20 or 40 cells. They have I think 32 GB of internal storage and you
can flip between display mode and note taking mode by sliding a switch. So you
can use the internal notes or use it as a display for your phone.
If you have more than one bluetooth device it is a great choice because you can
pair it with 4 different devices and switch devices on the fly with a keystroke.
I work at an agency for the blind and just saw one about a month ago.
I'd recommend checking them out. As I recall, the 20 cell is $2.395 and the 40
is $3.395.

PS, no I do not get a commission, I'm just really impressed. I use a Braille

Re: Questions about Using a Braille display with an I-Device

2014-10-10 Thread Wayne Merritt
One really neat feature in iOS 8 with a Braille display is the ability
to have pages turned automatically. I use this in iBooks and it is
quite nice. I don't have to turn the page, then hunt for the start of
the next page's content. Now, when I get to the bottom of the current
page, a message pops up on screen saying what page number I am going
to, and then the text starts immediately when that message goes away.
I haven't had too many issues when inputting Braille in iOS 8, but
then again, I also haven't gone to great lengths to input Braille
given the sluggishness. As said before, hopefully these issues will be
resolved soon.

Updates In The App Store Not Showing The Version

I'm wondering if others are experiencing this the app store when viewing their

me to indicate if the app version has really changed and if I need to review
the information when skimming all the updates. Can someone explain what is

2014-10-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Eileen and Bhavesh,

I can't reproduce this on my 5S with iOS 8, see example below, I used the
3-finger quadruple tap to copy that text to my clipboard and then pasted it
here:

CamFind - Search, QR Reader, Price Comparison Barcode Scanner, Version
3.0.5, 17.9 MB, What's New

If I double tap on that I can then swipe right and listen to Voiceover
reading the changes in this version.
If I do that and then double tap on it again the screen opens which contains
all the details about the app, the buttons for Details (selected by default)
as well as Feedback and Related. Then there are the screenshots and if you
continue to swipe right you come to again the app description, the What's
New section and then the Information heading after which you find the
Seller name, category, last updated, version number, size, rating, whether
Family Sharing is available for the app and so on.

Regards,
Sieghard

RE: Updates In The App Store Not Showing The Version

2014-10-10 Thread Ekstrand, Pamela A. -ND
I wonder if this is something specific to IOS 7 now.

I can reproduce this behavior on my iPhone 4S running IOS 7.1.2. However the
version does appear when I check updates on my iPad Mini running IOS 8.0.2.

Re: Questions about Using a Braille display with an I-Device

2014-10-10 Thread Sharonda Greenlaw
I have a Focus 40 braille display and use it all the time to take
notes with my iPhone. I use the Notes app for this. I did not know
that notes sync with Outlook, so I am happy to learn this. I have no
problems going to the next line with my Focus and it stays connected
very well.

I do have IOS 8 on my 4S. because there are problems with VO turning
off and on, that also affects the braille display. IOS 8 also seems to
write slowly and the braille buffer takes some time keeping up. But I
use the 4-5-chord and it works out pretty well.

The new Vario Ultra braille displays from Baum are very nice. You have a
choice of 20 or 40 cells. They have I think 32 GB of internal storage and
you can flip between display mode and note taking mode by sliding a
 switch.
So you can use the internal notes or use it as a display for your phone.
If you have more than one bluetooth device it is a great choice because
 you
can pair it with 4 different devices and switch devices on the fly with a
 keystroke.
I work at an agency for the blind and just saw one about a month ago.
I'd recommend checking them out. As I recall, the 20 cell is $2.395 and
 the
 40 is $3.395.

 Check them out here,

PS, no I do not get a commission, I'm just really impressed. I use a
 Braille

Because the cost of a traditional blindness notetaker (such as say the

braille display and just paring it with my Iphone.
Does anyone do this and if so how does it work for you?
 Is it a viable option?
How does it do when you have to take notes in an hour-long class or

Do most of the braille displays have a way for you to take notes on
them internally or do you have to use an app on the Iphone for taking
 notes?
Besides being able to take notes and read them in braille, another
thing I really miss doing is reading books from say Bookshare, BARD,
or I-Books with a braille display.
Does reading novels/books from these sites work well using a braille
 display and an Iphone?
 Thanks,

Since the native calendar can sometimes be interesting to use, there is an

Re: questions on doing a WiFi sync

2014-10-10 Thread Christopher Hallsworth

I don't know of any bugs currently but here's how to set it up.
1. Connect to iTunes via the cable.
2. Select the summary radio button. In there check the sync this device
over wifi check box, whether that be iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch.

3. Click apply button.
Note
On the mac you will have to interact with the scroll area before step 2
will work. Before step 3 stop interacting.

RE: questions on doing a WiFi sync

2014-10-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Charles,

Can you let me in on the secret as to how I get iOS 8.1.2 *smile*

Anyhow, you already received an answer as to how to set it up. Just thought
I add that I always found the WiFi sync was a pain in the neck because for
one thing it's very slow compared to syncing when the iPhone is connected. I
also found that for me it has always been rather unreliable in that
sometimes it just won't work and I had to either reboot both my phone and
computer or do the obvious and much quicker thing which is to plug in the
cable. Maybe the reliability issue has been addressed since I haven't really
bothered with WiFi sync probably since iOS 7 came out. I don't change things
on my phone where I have to constantly sync it and found that the few
seconds it takes to plug in the cable are more than made up by how fast my
sync and backup is done.

RE: instructions on using jambox speaker with iPhone 5s needed

2014-10-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Michael,

I don't know if you have the original Jambox or the large Jambox speaker. I
believe Ron has the big one and it may have a dedicated pairing button, but
the original one does not. What you do is when you are in Settings,
Bluetooth is to turn on the Jambox with the slider on the right side, but
instead of just sliding it up you slide it up all the way (it has a sort of
springloaded mechanism) and you hold it in the top position for a couple of
seconds until the Jambox tells you it is in pairing mode. Then you can let
go and check in your list of Bluetooth devices. The Jambox should be listed
and if it doesn't automatically connect, just double tap on it and it will
connect.

Hi,

What I do with my JamBox and my 5S is to turn the JamBox on, press the
pairing button until the voice says pairing, then go to the 5S and find
the blue tooth in settings and activate it. At this point, your phone will
see the JamBox and you double tap on it. It will connect

Emailing Scanned Material from KNFBReader: Is it Possible

2014-10-10 Thread Christine Szostak
Hi All,
In the KNFBReader app, is there a way to email a scanned file directly from
the app? Thus far the only way I have found to do so is to export it and then
email it from another app. This to me seems like a really weird way to deal
with this and seems like something that would have been put directly into the
app so I am wondering if I am just overlooking something really obvious?
Have a fabulous rest of the day!

Hi all.

I like using my phone for taking notes together with a braille display.

It depends on how you have set up your braille display if it will go to
sleep.

It also depends on how many cells a display needs to have.

I tend to recommend a 32 cells display from human ware (Brailliant 32
bi) this display has in my opinion only one drawback, it can sometimes
lose the connection to the phone while typing, this is a problem, but
one of the only problems that I have. Braille edge, u2 and focus are
better at staying connected, but in my opinion both braille edge and
focus are to long, and focus has also a problem when you wants to go to
the next display line. I guess you are from the u.s. and there are some
other displays available.

In IOS 8 it works really well to read books from ibooks with the braille
display. I guess it also still works fine from bookshare, if read2go
does not work anymore voicedream do, and voicedream is really great with
a braille display.

Best regards Annie.
Den 10/10/2014 kl. 12.13 skrev Brett brettst...@gmail.com:

Hi,

I often use my braille display to take notes in meetings at Work. It
works quite well, as long as your not too worried about formatting. If
you haven't typed anything in a while, just type a space and delete
it, to prevent your display from going to sleep. Your braille display
will go to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity.

I use notes on the iPhone when taking notes in meetings, because if
you sync your iPhone with itunes, your notes will appear in outlook.
You can then copy the note to notepad or word and format it then save
it to your computer.

I have read braille books from BookShare and books from iBooks with my
display, both work quite well.

The only thing to keep in mind is that iOS8 has issues with bluetooth
devices. I haven't yet used my display with iOS8, so hopefully someone
who has will chime in here to let us know how braille displays perform
under iOS8.

Hope this helps,
Brett.

Because the cost of a traditional blindness notetaker (such as say
the

braille display and just paring it with my Iphone.
Does anyone do this and if so how does it work for you?
Is it a viable option?
How does it do when you have to take notes in an hour-long class or
meeting?

Do most of the braille displays have a way for you to take notes on
them internally or do you have to use an app on the Iphone for taking
notes?
Besides being able to take notes and read them in braille, another
thing I really miss doing is reading books from say Bookshare, BARD,

Does reading novels/books from these sites work well using a braille
display and an Iphone?
Thanks,

RE: THE SWIPE GESTURE!!!

2014-10-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I believe Anthony is asking how he can close the app switcher itself with a
gesture not how to close apps in the app switcher.
As Christopher pointed out pressing the home button will close the app
switcher and Isaac mentioned another way which is to double tap the home
icon in the app switcher which is the only thing left if all apps are
closed.
You can, however, also use the scrub gesture to exit out of the app
switcher. This is a 2-finger back and forth sort of gesture. It doesn't have
to be that exact, as long as you do a 2-finger scrub left to right or
right to left across the screen, you can also do it on a slight diagonal
sort of like writing a greather than or less than sign or even like the
letter Z.

This also works to close the item chooser and in many apps can be used
instead of double tapping on a back button.

By the way, Christopher, you corrected somebody's post about a 3-finger
swipe up by saying it's a 3-finger flick up. There really isn't a
difference between swipe and flick, both are the same.

Regards,
Sieghard

Re: Updates In The App Store Not Showing The Version

2014-10-10 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hi,

It would have been nice from Apple to have gotten an alert that these changes
were going to occur. I haven't gone back into the app store to see how else to
obtain the information. It looks like I'll be spending more time going through
all of my 80 or more apps to see if the versions have been updated. I'm just
waiting for iOS 8.1 to be release and then I'll probably go and purchase my
iPhone 6. I think Apple has really dropped the ball and is trying real hard to
push all to iOS 8. I'm starting not to like their tactics because iOS 8 wasn't
ready for prime time, but pushed it because of the release of the new phones.
JMO.

Best,

New section and then the Information heading after which you find the
Seller name, category, last updated, version number, size, rating, whether
Family Sharing is available for the app and so on.

someone explain what is going on and where to troubleshoot the problem?

RE: Updates In The App Store Not Showing The Version

2014-10-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Eileen,

I agree that iOS 8 wasn't exactly a polished product and actually it still
isn't. However, whatever Apple did so that version numbers are apparently
not read in iOS 7 any more is probably some change on the backend of the app
store which they probably aren't even aware causes Voiceover not read the
version of apps any more in the update list. You might want to write to the
accessibility department and let them know.

Also, it's really rather easy to see if there are updates. There should
actually be a number on the app store icon badge if there are updates, e.g.
it would say App store, 2 items and this would indicate you have 2 updates.
Sometimes this may not show immediately and you have to make sure of course
that Badge Icon is turned on for App Store in Settings, Notifications.

Anyhow, if you open the app store and double tap on the Updates tab at the
bottom right of the screen and then review the screen starting at the top,
you will see if there are updates for any of your apps whether the version
number is read or not. Right now if I do this the first heading I get is
this:

Updated October 8, 2014

This is followed by 3 apps, Camfind, OneDrive and Paprika Recipe Manager
which are all apps which I updated on October 8.
Next comes the heading Updated October 6, 2014 and the apps Appel store
and Light Detector.
It then goes on to Updated October 4, 2014 with the apps Speed Test and
Spotify and the list goes on and on. You can turn the rotor to headings and
go to all the various dates and then swipe right to see what was updated
when.
If there are updates they will be at the very top of the list under a
heading which I can't remember what it says, it could be current updates
or something like that, but it won't have a date.

Hi,

It would have been nice from Apple to have gotten an alert that these
changes were going to occur. I haven't gone back into the app store to see
how else to obtain the information. It looks like I'll be spending more time
going through all of my 80 or more apps to see if the versions have been
updated. I'm just waiting for iOS 8.1 to be release and then I'll probably
go and purchase my iPhone 6. I think Apple has really dropped the ball and
is trying real hard to push all to iOS 8. I'm starting not to like their
tactics because iOS 8 wasn't ready for prime time, but pushed it because of
the release of the new phones. JMO.

The Jambox should be listed
and if it doesn't automatically connect, just double tap on it and it will
connect.

see the JamBox and you double tap on it. It will connect

RE: Is there a chime clock app that strikes every hour and every quarter hour

2014-10-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Paula,

This is one of the situations where syncing your phone to iTunes comes in
handy since even apps which get removed from the app store can be used until
they won't work any more for reasons of compatibility. If you sync your apps
with iTunes a physical copy of all your apps is kept on your computer and
you can sync these copies back to your phone.

Sieghard

I was extremely upset when my phone was replaced and I realized that Chime

Hi,
I believe the instruction from the app's maker suggest turning off

Hi Michael,

I don't know if you have the original Jambox or the large Jambox speaker. I
believe Ron has the big one and it may have a dedicated pairing button, but the
original one does not. What you do is when you are in Settings, Bluetooth is to
turn on the Jambox with the slider on the right side, but instead of just
sliding it up you slide it up all the way (it has a sort of springloaded
mechanism) and you hold it in the top position for a couple of seconds until
the Jambox tells you it is in pairing mode. Then you can let go and check in
your list of Bluetooth devices. The Jambox should be listed and if it doesn't
automatically connect, just double tap on it and it will connect.

Hi,

What I do with my JamBox and my 5S is to turn the JamBox on, press the pairing
button until the voice says pairing, then go to the 5S and find the blue
tooth in settings and activate it. At this point, your phone will see the
JamBox and you double tap on it. It will connect

Workaround for Braille Quick Keys In Bard Mobile and iOS 8

2014-10-10 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, all,

I was playing with the Bard app and realized I couldn't use Braille quick keys
while reading a book on the Braille display. I remembered that I had used them
before in iOS8. Basically, if QuickNav is on, Voiceover steals those commands
for navigation. However, if you turn QuickNav off, you can use those commands
normally. Unfortunately, I know of no other way besides using a qwerty keyboard
for toggling QuickNav. The other thing that occurs to me is to see if direct
touch is active and will allow Bard to use the key commands when it is toggled
on.

Re: Workaround for Braille Quick Keys In Bard Mobile and iOS 8

2014-10-10 Thread Teresa Cochran
Just a follow-up: no direct Touch in Bard, so it's a question of making sure
QuickNav is off before using the Braille quick keys.

Re: Is there a chime clock app that strikes every hour and every quarter hour

2014-10-10 Thread Robin Frost

Hi,
Oh dear me you don't have to disable all notifications you merely navigate
to settings, notification center, then tap on the icon for Westminster
chimes and under there you can set alerts to none turn off appearing in
notification center but leave sounds on and you've got it made.

I hope that clarifies things.

Hi Robbin, it does, except I want other notifications, so can't disable them
all, and I didn't find any way to do this in the app settings itself.

Hi,
I believe the instruction from the app's maker suggest turning off
notification center banners and alerts and leaving sounds set to on to
optimize the experience of the app.
I hope that helps.

every time my Westminster chimes app is running, I get a notification in my
notification center, every time the app does anything. does this app behave
that way? I love the chimes, but don't like having to clear all the
notifications out of the notification center.

I was extremely upset when my phone was replaced and I realized that Chime

and the voice is better.
Best of luck.
