Re: Transferring contacts, saved emails, music etc

2015-01-12 Thread Kimber Gardner
The one issue I have with using iCloud for backups is that you can't
control which versions of your apps you'll be restoring. When you
restore from iCloud, the most recent version of the apps are installed
on your phone. If this isn't a problem then you're probably fine to
use iCloud for your backup solution.

Hi,

I’m sorry to report that you probably won’t have much luck here.

I purchased a Jawbone Up24 in August 2013, while in a dialogue with Jawbon
regarding the accessibility of their app. the nice lady I spoke with didn’t
know much about VoiceOver, but she tested the app for me prior to purchase and
felt it would work. It turned out to be unuseable, and while Jawbone told me
they would be investigating this further, I decided to return the Jawbone Up
because the app needed a huge amount of work to make it VoiceOver friendly.

I told Jawbone I would purchase the Up again if the app became accessible, but
I ended up going with the Fitbit Flex instead, because of the accessibility.
Fitbit is the most accessible wearable technology I have tried.

I do keep the Up app on my phone to try to keep an eye on accessibility
improvements, but so far, there have been none.

I would recommend returning the Up and going with Fitbit. They have a couple of
new armbands out that can keep track of even your heart rate, and they know
when you are sleeping without your having to put them in sleep mode. I can’t
say for sure that these are accessible, but they don’t require a separate app
from the app that all their other trackers use, as far as I know, so I’m
assuming they would be.

Hope this helps,

Cheryl

It's funny, a friend of mine, who is also a VoiceOver user, tells me that
the FitBit app is marvelously VoiceOver accessible and she uses it with her

As some of you may know, Apple stopped selling Fitbit a few days after it

However, they continue to sell the Jawbone fitness tracking products.

In the meantime, I sent an email to Jawbone requesting VoiceOver

Re: Can anyone recommend a good external battery for Iphone 6?

2015-01-12 Thread Feliciano Godoy
I have experience with this external battery. Powerocks magic stick. You can
charge the iPhone five almost twice from a dead battery. This external battery
feels and works great, it is about the diameter of a US quarter and about 2
inches tall.it has an aluminum casing.

I also posted about some new external batteries that were presented on CES 2015

You can get models with that capacity that are about the size of a tube of

work if you are travelling where you may want to charge your phone 2 or 3
times, you have to get something that is maybe 10,000 or 12,000 MAH.

In terms of brands I would consider anker or LimeFuel, both have good
reviews, especially Anker, I think their website is iAnker.com and you can
find them on Amazon. They make external batteries all the way to 25,000 MAH.

Jonathan just tweeted a link to a battery from a company called iBattz which
they showed off at the Consumer Electronics Show which just recently took
place in las Vegas. At first it sounded like the battery was supposed to
fully charge an iPhone 6 in 15 minutes. This of course is nonsense and the
claim was later updated to say that the external battery itself can be fully
charged in 15 minutes. That still is impressive, even if you realize in the
morning your battery wasn't charged, you can plug it in while you have your
coffee and brush your teeth and by the time you are done it should be
basically fully charged. Here is a link to the article:

RE: can't type on my iphone 5

2015-01-12 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Jed,

Do you normally use touch typing or standard typing? If you are used to touch
typing and accidently switched to standard typing it may appear like what you
described. In standard typing you have to find a character and then either do a
double tap or split tap to type it. Your very hard tap may register as a double
tap some of the time and then the letter would get typed.
Go into an edit field and turn the rotor to Typing Mode, then make sure it's
set to the typing style you prefer, you switch between the typing modes by
flicking up or down with one finer when the rotor is on typing mode. After you
have it where you want it make sure to turn the rotor back to characters or
words because otherwise it gets changed again.

Has anyone ever seen this before?
It is making the phone basicly useless at this point. Anyone ever

RE: I'm back

2015-01-12 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Did you not get my email I sent directly? I outlined what you need to do in
iTunes and as long as you didn't turn on Find my iPhone during the setup
process you should be able to restore the phone.

The main thing is to use the Tab or F6 keys in iTunes. Once your phone is
connected, use Control+F to go to the search box as a reference/starting point.
Now tab until you get to more, then one more tab after that should put you on
iPhone and you have to activate this button to access your phone. Give it a
bit and then use F6 a few times or just tab a lot. I mean a lot, I believe if
you only tab it will take about 40 tabs to get to the Restore button, but if
your phone is connected and recognized and you are in your device area and not
the library area, then tabbing will eventually get you to the Restore button.

If you do find it and get a message that Find my iphone needs to be turned off
first you are in a bit more trouble. I believe you can turn this off via the
www.iCloud.com website, but it is very poorly accessible ynd you would probably
need sighted help for that. The other option I think is to force the phone into
what is called DFU mode, but maybe somebody who has done this can outline the
exact steps. Anyhow, if find my iPhone is not on then you should be able to
Restore it without problem and start over.

Make sure next time you do know the 4-digit code and I would also recommend you
set up Touch Id as it's a snap to unlock your phone with your finger print. You
will, however, still need to know the PIN since if you need to reboot yoru
phone or if you do an iOS update you will first have to unlock it once with the
4-digit PIN before touch Id works again and also if you ever want to change the
PIN or rescan your finger print, you will have to provide the PIN.

Sieghard

Subject: Weather Apps That Work Well in Canada?

HI folks.

Weather Radio seems to be US-only, at least when it comes to push notifications
for alerts, weather radio broadcasts etc. What weather apps are other
Canadians on here using?

I've tried the free Weather Office app which works well, but it doesn't appear
to have options for severe weather alerts. I'm a real weather buff, at least
where summer is concerned, so I'd like to be notified of these things if
possible.

Someone told me the Weather Network app is inaccessible. Is that true?

I have an apple blue tooth keyboard, and an I phone six. When I connected the
keyboard, it works, but when I go into an edit field to type text, either in a
text message, or another edit field, nothing happens, is there an issue? Does
anyone else have issues with the apple keyboard?

My sister looked at it and she said when voice over was switched off that the
text entered successfully. But then when voice over is turned on when i press
the keys on the keyboard nothing happens, no text is entered.

I don’t know the UK number, but you can always call the regular number for

Unfortunately the only app that will let you access Blackboard on your phone

Hi,

You're doing very well indeed with the 4S and there's no reason why you
shouldn't continue that way. I don't know your sight condition, but it may be
that you could find a larger screen more difficult, because of spacial
awareness, so just look carefully at both, try writing, reading and take your

Alex, what do you mean by this second line of yours that I will quote below?
Most carriers don’t support certain features? I just ordered a IPhone 6 64g
from Verizon cause I got a very good deal due to my being what they call a
“loyalty” customer.

Alex wrote: Upgrading would give you a better camera, larger screen, faster
processor/graphics chip, NFC for using Apple Pay, a longer battery life,
upgraded Touch ID sensor, and improved internal LTE radio. *The last one gives
you access to HD calls, faster LTE speeds, and more, but all of those require
your carrier to support the features, and not many do right now. HD calls also
require the other person to be using a device that can also handle the new
technology.

The Plus offers all that, plus a yet larger screen, more ram, a way longer
battery life, and automatic stabilization for taking pictures. The debate
continues as to whether this stabilization actually helps in OCR apps.

RE: Can anyone recommend a good external battery for Iphone 6?

2015-01-12 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The iPhone 6 hhas an 1,800 MAH battery and if you wwant to be able to charge it
from 20% when you get the first low battery warning back all the way to 100%, I
would recommend that you buy at least a 2,500 or 3,000 |MAH battery. You can
get models with that capacity that are about the size of a tube of lipstick or
maybe slightly larger. If you want something which also would work if you are
travelling where you may want to charge your phone 2 or 3 times, you have to
get something that is maybe 10,000 or 12,000 MAH.

In terms of brands I would consider anker or LimeFuel, both have good reviews,
especially Anker, I think their website is iAnker.com and you can find them on
Amazon. They make external batteries all the way to 25,000 MAH.

Jonathan just tweeted a link to a battery from a company called iBattz which
they showed off at the Consumer Electronics Show which just recently took place
in las Vegas. At first it sounded like the battery was supposed to fully charge
an iPhone 6 in 15 minutes. This of course is nonsense and the claim was later
updated to say that the external battery itself can be fully charged in 15
minutes. That still is impressive, even if you realize in the morning your
battery wasn't charged, you can plug it in while you have your coffee and brush
your teeth and by the time you are done it should be basically fully charged.

RE: Request for a recommendation for a bluetooth headset

2015-01-12 Thread Cristóbal
I’ve got a Plantronics M50, Aventree Jogger and Aftershox Bluez2. I use the
Jogger headset for working out on the bike and elyptical and whatnot since I
don’t care if I get those all sweaty, the Bluez2 throughout the day for
business calls so I don’t have my ears covered up all the time and the
Plantronics for when I’m out and about and also at home. The Joggers are bhel
as far as soun, but get the job done. Bluez2 are nice and sound is better, but
I always find myself going to my Plantronics. It’s only for one ear, but the
one main feature I like that I appreciate the most is being able to turn the
device on and off with the flick of a switch. It connects fast and without any
fuss. The other headsets you have to press and hold a button for a few seconds
to turn them on and off. Not the end of the world, but I find the convenience
and speed of the toggle switch on my trusty M50 super convenient. VoiceOver
works fine with the M50 too. This is one feature that is going to be at the top
of my must have list for whenever I decide on a bluetooth headset in the future.

I’ve been off the list for a while, so I’m sure this has already been discussed
more than once – I apologize for re-raising the issue. I’ve lost my
Plantronicks Voyager Pro HD Bluetooth device. I got it two years ago. Can
anyone recommend a good Bluetooth device that works well with Voiceover?

Plantronix voyager Legend headset question

2015-01-12 Thread Nicki keck
Hi all,

I now have the Plantronix voyager Legend headset, and it seems I have muted the
microphone so I can’t talk or give it a voice command. if I try to make a
call, it keeps saying “mute on.” I saw a review of this on applevis that said
the mute button is the same as the vioce button, which gets you into the vioce
commands interface, and it said that when on a call, I can press that button to
unmute, but it is not unmuting. It just keeps saying mute on or beeping.
also, the review said that you press the button once to unmute or hold it down
for the voice command interface. Problem here is I don’t have to hold it down
for the command interface to come up; I press it and it says say a command
immediately. of course, I can’t actually give it one because it is muted. any
help would be appreciated. obviously, something isn’t right here.

Re: Query re upgrading to IPhone 6 or 6+?

2015-01-12 Thread carol.pearso...@googlemail.com
OK,

Here's another question for those of you who use the Braille keyboard on the 6
or 6plus. If you don't use it on a tabletop, or in tabletop mode on your
knees, however do you manage to hold it and get your fingers still to fit
properly across the screen?

I was having a bit of a play today with the 6 and 6plus but I really don't
quite envisage how I'll braille well and easily as I don't want to use table
top mode or to work on a table.

Please give me your experiences on this one.

Some accessibility notes on why you might consider the larger screen of the 6
Plus, taken from my article at:

http://www.applevis.com/blog/apple-carriers-ios-iphone-news/recap-and-opinions-apples-fall-2014-announcements
One thing the article doesn't mention is that the iPhone 6 Plus supports the
Perkins style layout for braille screen input, no flattened V shape necessary.
Some users also find that typing with the regular on-screen keyboard (in
landscape mode) is a joy, almost like typing on a small hardware keyboard. I
don't have a 6 Plus so can't comment personally. Anyway, here's the excerpt:

The larger screen seems to many people to be, at first, a non-issue at best
and an annoyance at worst. If you can't see the screen, why would you want to
use a phone that has a huge one (I'm looking at you, 6 Plus)? You have to
figure out where to put this massive device, get used to your apps being even
bigger, figure out new layouts… Why bother? Aside from the fact that the iPhone
6 is actually not much larger than the 5S (the screen is larger, but there is
less of a bezel), I can come up with a few reasons:

a.. The larger screen means a larger phone, which means a larger battery.
The battery life on the iPhone 6 is better than the 5S, and the 6 Plus battery
is better than the 6. This is a win for all users, especially if you rely on
battery-draining GPS or audio apps.
b.. You have more room on the screen for touch. If you are someone who
touches things instead of flicking to them, you might find you enjoy having
more content (especially on webpages) available to you on a single screen. Even
if you flick instead of touch, you will be able to fit more text from, say, an
iBooks or Kindle book. That means more time between that pause while the page
is turned.
c.. Low vision users will love this. Magnification apps, zoom, larger text,
and similar apps and services will have more room to play with, letting users
see more at once instead of needing to scroll so much.
d.. Another win for low vision users is Display Zoom, which will shrink the
current app down to a smaller size, then zoom it to the full size of the
iPhone's screen. This sounds confusing, but it has the effect of making an app
larger and easier to see.
e.. If you use Apple Maps, Ariadne, or other apps that offer accessible
maps on the screen, you will have a lot more room to explore said maps, even
when zoomed in.
f.. The iPhone 6 Plus supports special landscape views in certain apps. For
instance, in Mail, switching to landscape mode will show the list of messages
on the left, and the currently open message on the right, similar to an iPad.
You might find this increased content on a single screen more efficient.

There's really no difference from an accessibility stand point, so most of
the information you're looking for can be gahered by looking at specs and
reviews in the main stream. That's not to say that you won't get plenty of
opinions and information here on the list, but it's not the only source of
information you're looking for. You'll get a lot just with Google.

Just after some advice please. I'm currently using an IPhone 5S. However,
my contract is up for renewal and I'm entitled to an upgrade. So am looking at
either the 6 or 6+. So can anyone tell me of any pros and cons or advantages
and disadvantages related to either of these phones? Does anyone have a view on
which one works better? Which one is easier for someone with no sight at all to
deal with? Are there any big problems with either of them which I need to be
aware of? Are there any major differences between the 5S and either the 6 or 6+
which I need to know about? Any other useful information anyone can give me
about them?

Sorry for all the questions which are probably really obvious I know, but
I really want to go into the phone shop able to make an informed choice which
is sensible and which will work for me. So any advice at all really very much
appreciated.

  Thanks.

RE: Plantronix voyager Legend headset question

2015-01-12 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
One other option would be to try holding down both the buttons on the
microphone stick portion (near where it swivels) for 10 to 12 seconds. Try it
under both power on and power off conditions.

This approach worked for me once when the thing seemed dead. Brought it back to
life and it’s been working fine since.

Hi all,

In my opinion, none of them are worth their money. Unreliable at very best.
I've thecked the same thing up to 10 times and got 10 different colours.

I think we are still in the ball game of the stand alone devices which go
directly on the surface to identify with a seal around the lense to prevent
exterior light. Something we will never get with a smart phone which is
very very influenced by ambient lighting.

Hi,

Its just the same as using a 4S or 5. In screen away mode, It doesn't matter
about the screen size so you can touch near each end if you want. You don't
have to try to reach the centre of the screen.

Cheers,

Some accessibility notes on why you might consider the larger screen of the 6
Plus, taken from my article at:
 http://www.applevis.com/blog/apple-carriers-ios-iphone-news/recap-and-opinions-apples-fall-2014-announcements
One thing the article doesn't mention is that the iPhone 6 Plus supports the
Perkins style layout for braille screen input, no flattened V shape
necessary. Some users also find that typing with the regular on-screen
keyboard (in landscape mode) is a joy, almost like typing on a small hardware
 keyboard. I don't have a 6 Plus so can't comment personally. Anyway, here's
 the excerpt:

The larger screen seems to many people to be, at first, a non-issue at best
and an annoyance at worst. If you can't see the screen, why would you want to
use a phone that has a huge one (I'm looking at you, 6 Plus)? You have to
figure out where to put this massive device, get used to your apps being even
bigger, figure out new layouts… Why bother? Aside from the fact that the
iPhone 6 is actually not much larger than the 5S (the screen is larger, but
there is less of a bezel), I can come up with a few reasons:

The larger screen means a larger phone, which means a larger battery. The
battery life on the iPhone 6 is better than the 5S, and the 6 Plus battery is
better than the 6. This is a win for all users, especially if you rely on
 battery-draining GPS or audio apps.
You have more room on the screen for touch. If you are someone who touches
things instead of flicking to them, you might find you enjoy having more
content (especially on webpages) available to you on a single screen. Even if
you flick instead of touch, you will be able to fit more text from, say, an
iBooks or Kindle book. That means more time between that pause while the page
 is turned.
Low vision users will love this. Magnification apps, zoom, larger text,
and similar apps and services will have more room to play with, letting users
see more at once instead of needing to scroll so much.
Another win for low vision users is Display Zoom, which will shrink the
current app down to a smaller size, then zoom it to the full size of the
iPhone's screen. This sounds confusing, but it has the effect of making an
app larger and easier to see.
If you use Apple Maps, Ariadne, or other apps that offer accessible maps on
the screen, you will have a lot more room to explore said maps, even when
 zoomed in.

Re: Looking for time/clock app that also has vibration option

2015-01-12 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hey Wayne. Sorry I'm coming into this late, I've been sick these past couple of
days. Still am. There used to be an app that did what you want it to do. It was
called Chime. I say that there used to be because it's no longer in the app
store. It was pretty good. You could set it to make sounds, have a female voice
say the time and even have Alex say the time. They call him a male voice only
but you could tell that it was Alex. It's such a good app that I'll never
remove it from my iPhone because I know I'll never find it in the app store.

Greetings. I am looking for a time and/or clock app that will also let
me know the time via vibration. I have had some issues with my braille
watch recently and have thought off and on about an alternative. If
the app could be used with vibration only then that might be helpful
in places where having VoiceOver speak would not be good, such as in a
meeting. Also, though this may be wishful thinking, if I could get the
time in vibration from the lock screen that would be handy as well,
perhaps with a gesture. In doing some searching on the AppleVis site,
I found an app that looks to fit the bill but it is listed as a
jailbreak app, which wouldn't work for me since I have not jailbroken
my phone. I have an iPhone 6 with iOS 8.1.2 for what that's worth.

 Thanks,
 Wayne Merritt

Re: Bluetooth Dock, please explain?

I think that is exactly what it is but I am not for sure.
I use to have a bluetooth speaker but I don’t know if it was a doc or not.

 Thanks, any replies greatly appreciated.
