RE: Typing with a brilliant VI 32 on Mac and iOS
Hello Keith. I installed the firmware update and found no differences. Brailleing has never been an issue for me but the Brailliant BI40 locks up when I write in IOS applications. It's so bad that I can't take notes during meetings. This makes the entire solution unusable. Humanware promised that this update addresses the issue. I haven't seen any improvement. If you have, please be specific and let us know why you think this update improved the experience with the BI40. Please also tell us what devices you are using it with, what version of IOS are you using and how much memory is on each device. This will help me when I deal with both Humanware and Apple. Thanks so much. Paul From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Keith B. Bard crashing issue
Hello list, So I’ve been noticing this for the past few months now and was curious if others were experiencing the same thing. From within the Bard app (iPhone 5 iOS 8.3) the app consistently crashes on me while in my wishlist of books. I don’t ever recall it crashing while in other tabs like the bookshelf tab or even if I’m browsing the bard site and doing different searches, again, from within the app. I’m pretty sure this didn’t happen with earlier versions of iOS 7 and don’t’ remember on what version of iOS 8 I was on when I first started noticing it. Anyway, does the Bard app crash on others as well? I poked around in the settings tab but didn’t really find any means to contact the development team about it. I’m guessing one would have to do so through the regular website contact information there? Thanks, Cristobal -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. I forgot to mention that poor signal was also contributing to issues I was having. One of those little WIFI extender boxes that just plugs into an available wall socket fixed that. RE: Bard crashing issue
Cristobal, I believe this BARD Mobile crashing issue began with some version of iOS 8 although I'm not sure which one. I normally experience it when initiating a download from my wish list. I'll double tap the wish list book to begin the download and when I tap to confirm it, the app closes. It is still running in the App Switcher and when I go back to BARD Mobile, I usually find the book I tried to download listed under my bookshelf with the audiobook download in progress. I suspect this and other issues that arose after the iOS 8 release have to do with something that changed with VoiceOver and app interaction with it that causes the app not to work as well as it did under iOS 7. To be fair to NLS, this isn't the only app I use that has had similar issues with iOS 8 which is why I'm never in a hurry to upgrade to a new iOS or an app version when what I use is working properly. These devices are extremely complex and quite frankly there is a lot that can go wrong especially when throwing accessibility into the mix. I find the BARD Mobile quirks to be a minor annoyance since they are not consistent and the app performs well at enabling me to read my BARD books on my iPhone. Hopefully, when they release a new iOS version of the BARD Mobile app, the issues will be resolved. Then, we can probably look forward to another round when Apple releases iOS 9 in September. Re: Airport extreme versus airport express
Hi Don, the Airport Express has a headphone/speaker jack, much as you'd find on the iPhone or many similar devices, on the back of it. Airport Extreme does not. That's one immediate and easily identifiable physical difference that comes to mind. I am fairly sure the Extreme has more Ethernet ports on it too. One technical difference that will be important if you have newer equipment is that the Express has not been updated to support 802.11AC Wi-Fi, where as the latest version of the Extreme supports it. Google will turn up even more info I'm sure. They are both nice products to maintain and configure thanks to the accessible Airport Utility. RE: albums in a list in iTunes?
Hi Eve, If the music on your iPod was previously synced to it from an iTunes library and you now sync that iPod to a new iTunes library without music you will loose everything. Unfortunately you cannot sync music back to iTunes once it’s on an iOS device. If you have the music on your computer but it doesn’t show up in iTunes that is simply because you haven’t added it to your iTunes library. In order to do this, first make sure the music is where you eventually want it, e.g. that it is on the drive and in the folder where you want to keep it. Now open iTunes, go to the File menu and select the “Add folder to library” option. This opens a standard windows dialogue, browse to the folder where your music is and activate the select button. This will add all the music in whatever folder you are pointing to to your iTunes library. If successful, make sure you are in the iTunes area of iTunes not the device area (just disconnect your device to make double sure), then if you press Control+1 for the music library, you should see all of your music there. If the music on your iPod was purchased from iTunes you can sync it back to your iTunes library by selecting “File”, “Devices” and “Transfer Purchases”. But this only works with music purchased from iTunes not with music that you ripped from CD’s and previously synced to your iPod. Of course if you have 3 other people on your WiFi streaming stuff it would make a difference. If you have your Apple TV connected via WiFi then not only the speed and quality of your internet connection would make a difference but also the quality of your WiFi. I used to have an issue at my business where even playing a video on one of my computers via WiFi would pause and buffer all the time. I replaced my router, bought a separate high-end access point all without any improvements. Hello Keith. When I'm writing Braille on my Brailliant, the display locks up. Does this happen to you? Do you recover by turning Quick nav off? If that doesn't work, what do you do? Thanks. On Jun 22, 2015, at 2:00 PM, Keith Bundy kb5...@gmail.com wrote: Hello, Paul. I am using the Brailliant BI 32 with an iPhone 5S with 16 gb. I noticed some change, though not as much as I had hoped. At times, I still have to press dots 4-5 with Space, which turns off what is called QuickNav and makes the Braille appear. In the middle of all this garbage with the Brailliant, I did make another discovery. Often in meetings I will use the Braille layout in IOS 8.3 and take notes that way. It appears immediately on the Braille display so can be read back conveniently. It's a little bit of extra hassle, but since I already own the Brailliant, it is definitely better than trying to buy a new display. This debate between Humanware and Apple seems to be continuous, with neither side taking responsibility for the problem. On 6/22/15, Paul Hunt prhu...@att.net wrote: Hello Keith. Re: Typing with a brilliant VI 32 on Mac and iOS
Hello, Paul. Re: Bard crashing issue
I'm not experiencing anything like that on my iPhone or iPad or my old iPhone 4 32 GB. The iPhone 4 is great for downloading NLS books to as the phone part is not active sense I got my 5s. Apple Watch book is ready
Hi everyone, You may remember that in April I said I was going to write a journal about my first few weeks using the Apple Watch. I'm delighted to tell you that I have finished it, and it's available now! It's called Watching Without Looking: A VoiceOver User's First Month with the Apple Watch. In addition to the journal, which covers my first month with the watch, I've included tips for setting up and configuring the watch, an explanation of all the controls and VoiceOver gestures, a Resources section, and more. I hope it will give you a sense of what the watch can do and whether it will meet your needs. And if you decide to buy one, it should give you the information you need to get up and running with it. The book costs $10 and is available at http://watchingwithoutlooking.wordpress.com It's in ePub, so it will work in ibooks, Voice Dream Reader, and any other software or hardware that plays unprotected ePub files. I hope you'll enjoy the book. All the best, Anna -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. All new members to the this list are moderated by default. Re: Transferring OOTunes Recordings to my Computer
Hi Tom, Ootunes files aren't in the normal file sharing table, so you need special software to find them. One I discovered about a year ago was iPhone Backup Extractor. Re: Do any of the Braille displays use a QWERTY keyboard? RE: Replacing Braille Notetaker with iDevice
the u2 QWERTY is a solution, though it will not eliminate the braille issues, as the qwerty keyboard still goes through the same process when it's translated with VO. There are distinct advantages to having a separate BT keyboard, like being able to use the quicknav navigation keys in Safari. While braille support for these is available, there is no command to toggle the quicknav keyboard commands on and off. On the bt keyboard, it's VO plus Q. There are other things you cannot do with braille displays as well such as keyboard commands for the two finger double tap (VO dash), double tap with one finger and hold, (Vo shift m) and the aformentioned VO plus Q for turning navigational quicknav keys on and off. The issue with running a separate bt keyboard with iOS 8 and later is that when you are typing with the bt keyboard, you can only see a letter or 2 at a time on the braille display until you finish typing. What you will see is the last letter or 2 after a full 8-dot cell at the far left, and another at the far right of the display. Highly annoying if you are someone who is deaf-blind who wants to use this as an option for communicating with the sighted and hearing world, not only because of this new limitation, but because until iOS 8, it was never a issue to have to consider. It's also worth noting that many displays on iOS have the same issues, because the development of the braille driver for VO rests within the responsibility of Apple themselves. That is one advantage of Android, that the manufacturer of the display can implement whatever braille keyboard mapping things they want, and then submit it to the developers of BraillBack, the primary app used for braille support on Android. However, the translation issue, again, falls with the developers of BrailleBack. My point with this is that each system where the braille display is serving as an external device, has issues. There is no support like what you will find in a native braille environment. Apple seems to be the best mobile solution at this time, and it's pretty good overall, but it still has its issues. RE: Replacing Braille Notetaker with iDevice Actually, with such note takers as those from Humanware, Hims and Freedom Scientific, that use a Braille display and a qwerty keyboard, you can type on the keyboards using the standard typing mode, or you can convert the qwerty keyboards to Braille writer style keyboards, which then use letters f, d and s to represent the keys for dots 1, 2 and 3, and keys j, k and l to represent the keys for dots 4,5 and 6. When using the keyboard in this way, you press the keys simultaneously, to make your characters, just as you would, if you were writing, using a Perkins style keyboard. Re: Netflix
I had a similar issue with a 125 MBS connection. Try changing Playback Setting to High, if it is currently set to Auto. Note: if you have more than one account, you'll need to change that setting for other accounts or profiles as well. They recommend a minimum connection speed (meaning download speed) of 3.0 megabits per second for standard definition video, 5.0 for high definition, and 25 megabits for Ultra. Re: albums in a list in iTunes?
Hi, Thanks for answering my post. I thought the songs were on my computer in ITunes. Maybe I need to synch my IPod to make sure they are there. I’ll try that today after I get back from taking my guide dog to the Vet. I was having problems with ITunes a friend suggested that I totally uninstall it then reinstall.
