Re: weather app

2016-04-07 Thread Tom Lange
There is no delete key. Find the city that you want to delete then flick up
once and you should hear voiceover say delete
. Double tap to delete the city, then double tap on any remaining city to
return to the screen for that city. Hope that helps.

Sendero Seeing Eye GPS V Blind Square.

2016-04-07 Thread Dianne B. Phelps
Wayne,

Thank you for your wonderful suggestion. Unfortunately, my left ear is so
much weaker than my right that splitting the work between two won't work
well for me. I am almost tempted to obtain Those new JAW BONES type
earphones which works on the bone conduction of the sound. I wish I had a
store nearby where I could see those to see if splitting things that way
might work.

My left ear took a concussive blow in my accident and I have very little in
my high frequencies, making speech going into that left ear a kind of
garble.

Again, I do appreciate the suggestion very much.

Dianne B. Phelps

Do you have any recommendations? I have looked into this, but haven't
purchased one. I like how the trekker breeze has that external speaker. Too
bad it doesn't work with the iPhone.

Hi Victor,

It does work, but there isn’t much of an indication it does anything. I believe
if you get a sighted person to look they see the screen going blank briefly or
something like that. I just tried it in the App Store app and if I put my
finger on the Featured tab and then split tap with another finger, there is a
tone after 10 or 11 taps, same one you hear when you unlock your phone or open
an app. You have to really pay attention to notice it, but it is there.

The split tap method didn’t work. Sorry.

Heck, I even tried turning Voiceover off, and doing it by position. Not sure
what’s supposed to happen, like a confirmation screen or something like that,
but nothing happened for me.

Perhaps someone else could try it, and see if something happens on their phone.

Yes, you can do so by putting your finger on the item and then doing a split
tap, i.e. tap 10 times quickly with a second finger.

I think these are for visual people, since I don’t know the keystrokes for a

Especially the tapping on the tab ten times to empty the cache.

How many times have you seen posts on tech sites about “hidden iPhone features”
and thought to yourself, these tricks aren’t really hidden at all. We’ve even
had a few articles here on BGR with tips that were indeed unknown to most
users, but the savvy iOS device owners out there were undoubtedly familiar with
at least a few of them.

Well, in this piece we’re going to tell you about 25 hidden features that are
really, truly hidden. As in, you could look through your iPhone from now until
the end of time and you wouldn’t find any of these tricks unless you know what
you’re looking for.

DON’T MISS: The math they don’t want you to see: iPhone carrier trade-ins are
always a bad idea

In the past, many of the hidden tips we’ve seen on sites and even covered here
are simply things that are buried in the Settings app in places people normally
wouldn’t look. These are great things to know — plenty of people would make
their camera flash blink with incoming messages if they knew that they could,
for example — but they’re not really “hidden” or “secret,” per se.

Each of the tips that follow below, however, are completely hidden. There is no
indication that these functions exist in iOS, and we guarantee that most users
don’t know about them. In fact, we also guarantee that even the savviest iPhone
owners among you will find at least one or two things you didn’t already know.
In fact, ran this list past a friend who works at Apple and there were a few
things that even he didn’t know.

Enjoy.

Redial: In the Phone app, press the green call button on the keypad screen to
make the last dialed number appear.

Clear cache: Make your iPhone run faster by clearing out the cache in several
of Apple’s apps using a secret trick. In the App Store, Podcasts, Music, Game
Center and Phone apps, tap on any single tab icon at the bottom of the screen
10 times in a row.

Make TouchID work faster: Save the same fingerprint multiple times as different
entries and TouchID will work much faster. This is especially useful on older
phones like the iPhone 6 and iPhone 5s.

Spotlight conversions: Remember when we told you how easy conversions are in
our post on Google search tricks? It’s even easier for iPhone users — just open
Spotlight and type something like “20 euros in GBP,” and it will instantly
perform the conversion.

Hi Marie,

On your phone do the following:
Go to Settings > iCloud > Storage (this will be followed by how much storage
you have left, e.g. Storage, 1.2 Gigabytes available, button.

Double tap on that.
On the next screen you have a "Storage" heading at the top. Swipe right once
and you will hear the total storage available, it will be 5 Gigabytes unless
you have bought more like the 50 Gigabytes plan.

Swipe right and you again hear how much is available.
Swipe right and you find the "Manage Storage" button, double tap on it
(after it is one more button which is "Change Storage Plan".
Now you have your back button at the top left and the heading "Manage
Storage". Underneath is the first item which is also a heading and it is
"Photos".

Here you will see how much storage is used up by iCloud Photo Library
Swipe right and you now move into the backups area, first it is just the
heading, swipe right aand there is another heading giving you the total
amount of storage used by all your devices.
Swipe right from there and you find backups which are labelled according
your device names. For example, for me it says:
Sieghard's iPhone 6S Plus (this iPhone) and this is followed by how much
storage that backup uses.

Sieghard's iPhone 5S, again it shows how much is used by that backup.
Keep in mind that by default all iPhones are just called "iPhone", you can
change that in Settings > General > About.
If you see backups here from older devices which you may no longer have, you
can double tap on them and then you find a delete button. If you aren't sure
or if your devices aren't properly labelled, you could simply delete all
backups, make sure you give your devices more descriptive names and then
back them up again.
Lastly, keep in mind that if you have do a "Reset Network Settings" it will
revert to the default name "iPhone" so if you called it "Marie's iPhone" or
"Marie's iPhone 5S" or whatever phone you have you have to go back to
Settings > General > About and change it again after the reset network
settings.

Regards,
Sieghard

Go to iCloud , double tap on manage storage , then you should see backups
then delete them.

Re: Syncing Question from New iCloud Drive User

2016-04-07 Thread Alan Lemly
Mark,

At this point my syncing questions are moot. I should have known that
installing iCloud for windows was going to expect me to run the latest version
of iTunes which I discovered today no longer runs on my system but instead
returns an error dialog. I'm still not ready to give up the sidebar of iTunes
11.4 although I know it is inevitable at some point.

I'm glad I made a full system image backup before installing iCloud for windows
because I should have my system back like it was pre-iCloud when the restore
completes in a couple of hours.

Oh man, is it something Winston can fix? Maybe if you are patient then you can
restore from your backup and have your folders again? That is a bummer.

I lost my folders, not as a result of the update. It was as a result of the
cloud sync. The folders updated fine from the old format to the new. Everything

RE: Discrete, long-lasting, bluetooth headset recommendation

2016-04-07 Thread SSEric
As I mentioned the other day, take a look at Anker Sport. They are about as
small as Bluetooth gets. They do have to seat in the ear canal for good
music quality but for reading you would not have to insert them so far and
could still hear outside sounds. They run about $30 on Amazon.

Subject: Discrete, long-lasting, bluetooth headset recommendation

Hi,
I'm seeking recommendations for a bluetooth headset that is rather discrete
and has super long battery life. I want a bluetooth headset that I can
listen to music and books all day at work while I work, so the battery life
would have to be decent. Also, even though I'd be listening to music through
it, I'd be okay with it only going in one ear, although it would be nice to
have the play/pause and music controls and volume controls on it. I'd like
something kind of small or at least rather discrete. I'm using an iPhone 6,
although I don't think that matters, because most if not all modern
bluetooth headsets should work with iOS devices. Any help and insight would
be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Re: Facebook artificial intelligence for photos

2016-04-07 Thread Christina C.
I think I read on twitter if it’s not working to log out of the faceBook app
and then log back in or something like that. I don’t remember reading that you
have to uninstall the app but I didn’t place that close of attention since I am
one of those weird people who didn’t like faceBook and deleted my account. One
thing I hated was all the photos people posted with no caption or comment or
description as to the context of their photos. It made for a very boring and
flat experience on FaceBook. So, this topic is interesting to me. I like the
idea of AI describing the photos since most people probably won’t take the time
to add alt text for photos. Is it an option for people to add alt text to
photos like Twitter just added to their official app for iOS? That could be
very beneficial.

RE: Syncing Question from New iCloud Drive User

2016-04-07 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Alan,

No problem. Glad I could help.

As for understanding why Contacts/calendar appointment syncing, on Windows, is
the way it is, I would ask that you keep in mind that (1) iTunes predates the
iCloud Control Panel by several years. In an effort to preserve backward
compatibility for the various versions of Outlook both synchronization paths
have to coexist, so-to-speak and (2) there are those who use both Windows and
OS X without benefit of an iOS device. Without an iOS device, the iCloud
Control Panel is the only way to maintain cross-platform synchronization..

Generally, I recommend using the iCloud Control Panel instead of iTunes for
contact/appointment synchronization if for no other reason than the fact that
by doing so, one is not required to attach a device to a PC in order to update
the information.

Regardless, everyone likes what they like and as long as it works, that's all
that matters.

I would suggest, however, that with the arrival of Windows 10, it may be only a
matter of time before iTunes for Windows no longer support contact/calendar
synchronization. This is just a guess, on my part, nothing more.

Mark,

Thanks much for the warning. I'm glad I asked the question.

I am somewhat perplexed why this causes duplicates but I expect it's that
syncing works between two devices and throwing a third into the mix messes
things up. My contacts and calendars are based in Outlook 2010. If that is the
source of what goes into iTunes and also what goes into iCloud, I don't
understand why the sync between the phone and either iTunes or iCloud doesn't
only create items which are in one but not the other.

If you want to continue to use iTunes as your sync source for your Calendar and
Contacts, do not, repeat, do not, enable that option in the iCloud Control
Panel or you will, indeed, end up with duplicates.

Subject: Syncing Question from New iCloud Drive User

Hello List,

I just installed iCloud for Windows on my Windows 7 computer and have a
question about syncing before I step in something and end up with duplicates on
my iPhone 6.

I understand conceptually that with iCloud for Windows, items I have ticked
such as Outlook contacts and calendars will be kept in sync between my computer
and the Apple servers hosting the iCloud. I've always synced my contacts and
calendars and music between my computer and my iPhone using iTunes and expect
I'll continue to sync my music this way going forward. I just want to make sure
before turning on contacts and calendars in my iPhone iCloud settings that
doing this won't cause duplicates.

Can someone who has been using iCloud and iTunes give me a bit of an overview
and assurance that I won't cause duplication on my phone by turning on iCloud
contacts and calendars? I also assume the devices are smart enough not to
duplicate items if I run a sync operation within iTunes. I'm just a bit nervous
since syncing things to iCloud and having those same items checked to sync in
iTunes in what I'll call a manual sync seems a bit counter-intuitive. Do those
who use iCloud for syncing make sure the same things aren't marked for syncing
in iTunes?

Thanks for any guidance you can offer.

Discrete, long-lasting, bluetooth headset recommendation

Hi,
I'm seeking recommendations for a bluetooth headset that is rather discrete and
has super long battery life. I want a bluetooth headset that I can listen to

Voice dream reader and iCloud

2016-04-07 Thread Candy Lowe
Hello everyone,
I am currently enjoying being able to sync all of my bookshare books and other
documents to all of my devices with voice dream reader. When I finish
listening to a book, I delete it from the device. Does that also delete it
from iCloud? If not, I would like to be able to delete it from iCloud. When I
go to iCloud drive, I see the files in my library, but, it is difficult to get
to the name of the file. They are first shown with letters and numbers and you
have to double tap to find out which file it is. Is this how I delete from
iCloud, or will it be deleted when I delete it from voice dream reader?

Thanks in advance.

RE: iPhone, Outlook.com ail and Windows Live Mail?

2016-04-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The Delete from Server setting only applies to POP accounts which don’t really
synchronise with the server. If email is set up using the POP protocol all mail
is downloaded and stored locally. If you use two devices you can set up your
secondary device to not delete the message from the server so that you can
still download the message on the primary device in case you want to archive it.
POP is an old protocol which was never really meant to be used in a world where
people use computers, smartphones, tablets and so on. In that world you want
your mail, contacts and calendars stored in the cloud on a server and set up
your devices to access and sync with that masterset of data and that is where
IMAP, Exchange Active Sync and full-blown Exchange comes in.
I know some people still like to use POP and I don’t want to start another
discussion about the Pros and Cons of POP vs IMAP vs Exchange/Exchange Active
Sync, but the fact is that POP does not handle multiple devices well. Yes, you
can get your mail on two or three devices, but it does not sync back, i.e. if I
reply to an email then that email shows as replied to on whichever device I use
to reply and the message I sent is on that device, it does not show up on my
other devices as well.

Sieghard

deleted message.
And you needed to say something like delete from server.
I've never used your set up, but I have used an IMAP and that was a problem I
was having as well. I hope this helps. Tom

It sounds like he has a pop account. Since I changed to exchange I have no
problem getting rid of messages either on the phone or the computer. I have
gmail so not certain about outlook or
google mail, but this sounds like the problem.

RE: ICloud Backups

2016-04-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Swipe right and you find the "Manage Storage" button, double tap on it (after
it is one more button which is "Change Storage Plan".
Now you have your back button at the top left and the heading "Manage Storage".
Underneath is the first item which is also a heading and it is "Photos".
Here you will see how much storage is used up by iCloud Photo Library
Swipe right and you now move into the backups area, first it is just the
heading, swipe right aand there is another heading giving you the total amount
of storage used by all your devices.
Swipe right from there and you find backups which are labelled according your
device names.
If you aren't sure or
if your devices aren't properly labelled, you could simply delete all backups,
make sure you give your devices more descriptive names and then back them up
again.
Lastly, keep in mind that if you have do a "Reset Network Settings" it will
revert to the default name "iPhone" so if you called it "Marie's iPhone" or
"Marie's iPhone 5S" or whatever phone you have you have to go back to Settings
> General > About and change it again after the reset network settings.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hi,

Once you tap on the show and start watching, you can tap on episode list. The
show will stop, and you can choose the season. There are 11 seasons there, so
it goes through last year. I’m hoping season 12 will be there in not too long.

Take care,

Jewel,

The update from 9.3 to 9.3.1 was primarily to fix an activation bug.

It is only 2 or 3 weeks since I upgraded to 9.3, but for the past week, Apple
has been advising me that it will, if I wish, automatically upgrade my phone to
9.3.1.
I have been ignoring its kind offer, but last night, I took the bull by the
horns and told it to go ahead and download the upgrade.
It appears that I had nothing to fear for, as far as I can see, the only thing
that I had to do in settings was to set up "Hey Siri.
Does anyone know what improvements/bug fixes .1 has made?

RE: Syncing Question from New iCloud Drive User

2016-04-07 Thread Alan Lemly

Alan,

Alan Lemly

RE: Hidden iPhone features

2016-04-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Regards,
Sieghard

The split tap method didn’t work. Sorry.

Heck, I even tried turning Voiceover off, and doing it by position. Not sure
what’s supposed to happen, like a confirmation screen or something like that,
but nothing happened for me.

Perhaps someone else could try it, and see if something happens on their phone.

Yes, you can do so by putting your finger on the item and then doing a split
tap, i.e. tap 10 times quickly with a second finger.

I think these are for visual people, since I don’t know the keystrokes for a
great many of these tricks.

Especially the tapping on the tab ten times to empty the cache.

Anyone know how to do this without this keystroke?

Subject: Hidden Iphone features

Spotlight math: Want to do a quick math problem? No need to open the Calculator
app, just pull down to open Spotlight and type it right there.

Delete numbers in the Calculator: Speaking of the Calculator, you can delete
single digits when you tap the wrong number by swiping left or right on the
screen
