Subject: Notification volume question

Hi I'm new here coming over from Android with an iPhone SE. My notification
sounds are very low. In the Android world notifications and ring tone volumes
are the same. But from what I've found on my phone is that ring tones have
their own volume and notifications come from where your media volume is set. I
tried lowering the voice over volume using the rotor where I could then raise
the media volume to bring my sounds up a bit. However this made it very
difficult to hear voice over while in a call and even when the phone is ringing
to hear the caller ID. So I was wondering how everyone has handled this with
their phones and if there's a solution or settings that will help bring that
notification volume up.

RE: Is Itune12.4 64Bit Only?

2016-06-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
If your computer is using a 32 bit version of Windows the correct 32 bit
version of iTunes will be downloaded, when you go to Apple.com/iTunes the
website will know which version you need.
I recently downloaded iTunes for my laptop running Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit and
following is what the file was saved as:

iTunes6464Setup

I am pretty sure that if you download from a 32 bit PC this will be reflected
in the file name and it will either say something about “32setup” or maybe “86”
or “x86” which also refers to 32 bit.

RE: Search for cell network under system services, what is it?

2016-06-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Mary,

The Cell Network Search has nothing to do with how your phone connects to the
cellular network or whether it connects at all. A Google search resulted in a
bunch of results, here is one explanation which is easy to understand:

Cell network search: Apple keeps a database of cell towers and monitors
reception in your area based on this option. It’s used to improve products in
general and it’s not really a necessary function, so you can disable this
feature if you wish not to share cellular tower information with Apple.

Wi-Fi Networking I am pretty sure does something equivalent for Wi-Fi Networks
and hotspots.

Even Setting Time Zone is not required as your phone also receives this
information from cell towers. I have turned this on in rare situations when I
travelled to Asia and for some reason the date and time did not seem to set
themselves. Turning it on would fix the issue and then I turned it off again
since it anyways would only be important if you travel across time zones. Here
in Canada or the US I have never found that the time was not displayed
correctly even with this turned off.

Sieghard

I took the advice about going into location services and checking the system
services under there and turning off things that you don't need. One of those
items is checking for cellular network services or something close to that. Now
that sounds like something you would want to do when you are signing up and
getting connected with your cellular network. And I think the advice in the
original post was that it could be turned off. But I wonder about what might
happen if you were on a road trip, say, and lost contact. Or even if you had to
reboot your phone or turn it on to airplane mode and then off-again. Wouldn't
it have to find the network? So, I turn this off but I'm wondering if that was
a good idea.

Hello Jonathan,
Nice blog post. I agree with you particularly on the Siri and braille
improvements. Another option I would like to see under the do not disturb is
the ability to block unknown numbers. Although one can presently block a number
with caller ID, it seems that a person can still call with an unknown number
even the number that was blocked.
Sure that some carriers may offer an anonymous call rejection feature that can
be enabled, but it would be nice if it were built in to the software some way.
A second item I would like to see is VoiceOver announce the presence of
formatting such as italics when navigating word by word in an application using
a Bluetooth keyboard. For me this announcement has occurred at random.
A third option I would like to see built into the next version of Ios is a
toggle that pressing enter on a keyboard or braille device does not cause a
text message to be sent automatically. Instead it should be a line break. To
send the message, one can press enter twice quickly.
These are just some of the updates I thought of that I would like to see as a
welcome addition to the next update.

Interesting but distressing! Please help and thanks. I used mp3 recorder to
make a recording and attached it to an email. It sounded like it left, but when
I go into mail at the bottom of the screen it says "two unsent." How do I send
the two unsent emails? I actually need to send only one, but I did the
attachment twice. If I put it in Drop Box, could I attach to an email from
there? Assignment for my course so any help deeply appreciated!

One thing to bear in mind about filenames in iTunes. The Windows names are
truncated when you look at them in Windows Explorer. This has held true since

  Hi Gary,

I just downloaded iTunes 12.4.1 on my Windows 10 laptop where I use Jaws 17
as my screenreader. One thing that is slightly improved is when you go to the
Apps area in iTunes. Before once you tabbed into the app grid view you could
not tab forward to where Jaws would read the What’s New section or to the
Update All button. Instead you had to go to the Search field with Control+F and
then use Shift+Tab to go backwards until you came to the update all button. Now
in 12.4.1 Jaws again reads the What’s New and you can tab normally. However,
Jaws still does not read the names of the apps in the grid view as you arrow
around, you basically have to tab once past the grid view, then Jaws says what
app it has focus on, you can then Shift+Tab, move the cursor right or left,
then tab again to hear the name of that app and read the What’s New.

I don’t usually use iTunes to download or listen to Podcasts since I find
using a Podcast client like the native Podcast app or Downcast is such a good
experience. However, I just opened the Podcasts area and I guess at some point
I had added the Today in iOS Podcast and Cool blind Tech and I was able to
focus on one of these, then tab until I got a listing of episodes and I was
able to arrow up and down in that list and so on.

Of course if you set it up so new episodes download to your computer you will
have a “Podcasts” folder in your iTunes Media folder with subfolders for the
various Podcasts and in each of them you will find all the episodes.

  Regards,

  Sieghard

I've been downloading podcasts with iTunes since the last version of 11 and
versions up to the latest update. As far as I can tell, Apple has made it
impossible now to download podcasts without considerably more discomfort. I
cannot find a way to collapse and expand particular podcasts for convenience of
getting from show to show and now the dates of the shows are harder to find.
Where I used to be able to get the latest several numbers of the Blind Bargains
shows for a couple of weeks and dump them on a card for playing on a stream,
they no longer show up show by show. If there's a way to rearrange this, I'll
be happy to hear it.

Good luck.

2016-06-05 Thread Gary Petraccaro
I'm dealing specifically with podcasts and I'm definitely not having your
success. My version of Window-Eyes is 9.1.
I did find out one of the reasons I had the problem I did with i a long
conversion with Accessibility with an excellent advisor.
In the tree view of podcasts, iTunes collapses the tree so that only the top
item of any podcast shows. Some of my 'casts have several shows to any given
date. Those additional shows were not showing at all.
The advisor said to try 3 right arrows in succession. I did and nothing
happened.
Then she said to try a faster 3 right arrows. That worked but with no sound or
change of wording from the speaker.
Up and down cursor did show that the tree had expanded.
The same applied if I went left arrow 3 times quickly. No voice
acknowledgement but there was a change.
Without someone viewing the screen either from my end or on Apple's side, there
would have been no way whatsoever that I would have known what was going on.
That qualifies as very bad design.
I have no idea where else it might rear its ugly head.

Hi Dan,

I think you are correct in being a little suspicious. If it were me, I would
probably call the Apple Accessibility telephone number to inquire if there were
any legitimate reasons why Apple would be asking for a password. Sometimes
these things are legitimate although if you were not in the process of
purchasing an app that day, it seems very unlikely that Apple should be asking
for your password.

Good luck. Regards, Michelle

Re: Refurbished iPhones from gazelle

2016-06-05 Thread Vicky Collins
Well, keeping in mind that they will only ship within the United
States, I'll give you the following examples. And, although they
sell unlocked devices, as well as those locked to Verizon and
Sprint and T-Mobile, since I'm with AT, I'll limit my examples
to that carrier. There are lots of options, as you might guess,
and the stock changes on a regular basis as people buy and sell
phones. But, right now, the site is showing the 16 GB iPhone 5S
in space grey can be purchased for $199 in fair cosmetic
condition, $239 in good condition and $289 in excellent
condition. The same 16 GB iPhone 6 can be purchased for $349 in
fair cosmetic condition, $379 in good condition and $419 in
excellent condition.

I did buy some phones from Gazelle last year, and I was
perfectly happy with my transactions. I wanted to participate in
the public beta of iOS 9, but didn't want to risk the iPhone 6 I
was then using. So, I purchased a used 16 GB iPhone 5S from
Gazelle, bought the model listed in excellent condition and got
it for one hundred fifty dollars less than Apple would have
charged, but without the one year manufacturer warranty from
Apple. They shipped quickly and tracking information was
provided.

I did have one sort of an issue, though. When I first tried to
make the purchase, I used my debit card, but got some sort of
error and the transaction wasn't approved. Then, I changed my
payment method to PayPal, and the transaction went through
without a problem. Note that my debit card and PayPal account
were both tied to the same checking account from which the funds
were eventually withdrawn. So, when I later made a second
purchase from Gazelle for two more iPhone 5S phones for family
members, I went straight to using the PayPal account and didn't
even bother trying to use any cards directly.

Here is the link from their FAQ about only shipping within the
United States, followed then by the relevant information:

Reminder App

2016-06-05 Thread Chris Chaffin

I have had a sudden change in how reminders are shown in my list of
notifications and on my lock screen, and wondered if anyone had any ideas.
Previously, each reminder that was due would show up in my list of
notifications and on my lock screen. Now it just gives one notification for
all reminders and says how many days they are past due.
For example, it says, reminders due 5 days ago, and that is it!

I have turned off reminder notifications, then turned them back on, tried
restarting my phone, and I even did a reset by holding down the home button and
power button, but no change at all. I am not sure what else to do.

Now for those who do not know, one of the new features of ios 9 was to list any
reminder that was due on your lock screen. This gave you quick and easy access
to better help you remember what you have to get done. I really use my
reminders a lot, so I really liked this new feature. By the reminders being
there everytime I unlocked my phone it helped me make sure I did not forget the
task I had to get done.
But now all of a sudden, it has changed the way it is listing the reminder
notifications.

Again, if anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

Thanks,

Chris

don't see anything for outgoing mail that requires a password. I am using a
pop server so it's the smtp side.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Notification volume question

2016-06-05 Thread Gordon
Hi I'm new here coming over from Android with an iPhone SE. My
notification sounds are very low. In the Android world notifications and
ring tone volumes are the same. But from what I've found on my phone is
that ring tones have their own volume and notifications come from where
your media volume is set. I tried lowering the voice over volume using
the rotor where I could then raise the media volume to bring my sounds
up a bit. However this made it very difficult to hear voice over while
in a call and even when the phone is ringing to hear the caller ID. So I
was wondering how everyone has handled this with their phones and if
there's a solution or settings that will help bring that notification
volume up.

Search for cell network under system services, what is it?

2016-06-05 Thread Mary Otten
I took the advice about going into location services and checking the system
services under there and turning off things that you don't need. One of those
items is checking for cellular network services or something close to that. Now
that sounds like something you would want to do when you are signing up and
getting connected with your cellular network. And I think the advice in the
original post was that it could be turned off. But I wonder about what might
happen if you were on a road trip, say, and lost contact. Or even if you had to
reboot your phone or turn it on to airplane mode and then off-again. Wouldn't
it have to find the network? So, I turn this off but I'm wondering if that was
a good idea.
Mary

Re: The Top 10 Things I'd like in iOS 10

2016-06-05 Thread Shai
Hello Jonathan,
Nice blog post. I agree with you particularly on the Siri and braille
improvements. Another option I would like to see under the do not
disturb is the ability to block unknown numbers. Although one can
presently block a number with caller ID, it seems that a person can
still call with an unknown number even the number that was blocked.
Sure that some carriers may offer an anonymous call rejection feature
that can be enabled, but it would be nice if it were built in to the
software some way.
A second item I would like to see is VoiceOver announce the presence
of formatting such as italics when navigating word by word in an
application using a Bluetooth keyboard. For me this announcement has
occurred at random.
A third option I would like to see built into the next version of Ios
is a toggle that pressing enter on a keyboard or braille device does
not cause a text message to be sent automatically. Instead it should
be a line break. To send the message, one can press enter twice
quickly.
These are just some of the updates I thought of that I would like to
see as a welcome addition to the next update.

Check in Settings > Privacy > Location Services which apps have been using your
location.

You may want to do a Reset Network Settings in Settings > General > Reset as
this can often fix such issues, but first make sure nothing that shouldn’t be
is using your location. Make sure to also check “System Services”, here you can
turn off almost everything except maybe some things that are important to you.
But, for example, Time Zone and Cell Network Search and so on can be turned off
without ill effects and of course you should turn off traffic and that setting
whereby your iPhone keeps track of places you go to.

Hi All,

This morning I was noticing thatmy iPhone 6+ was draining at an alarming rate.
I was at 100% charge when I woke up this morning at 7am, and by 11:30a, my
phone shutdown because it died.

I am seeing that the “location tracking on” message is continuously on the
status bar. I looked at my wife’s phone and it isn’t there, only when I bring
up an app that makes a request for location it shows up.

I looked under Settings -> battery,

And saw that my calendar was taking up 45% in the last 24hrs, and my mail app
was taking up 39% over the last 24 hrs.

I mmade shure, that those apps are not running in the background, and I am
still getting a abnormal battery drain.

I am running iOS 9.3.2, the latest version on a Verizon iPhone 6+ 128gb.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Juan

RE: The Top 10 Things I'd like in iOS 10

2016-06-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I would agree with that, but as far as you should wait to update until 2017
depends entirely on how well your iPhone 5S works, how long the battery lasts
after several years of usage and also for me it would depend on what Apple is
coming up with this fall. Tim Cook apparently said that this fall there will be
features or hardware we won't want to live without so who knows. My guess is
that it will be more hardware related since most features will be software
related and we'll hear about those tomorrow in a week when iOS 10 is
introduced. Of course there maybe things that depend on the new hardware which
they won't reveal on June 13. So, Harry, just wait and see what this year's
iPhone will offer and then decide.

Sieghard

I'd think it would happen on most iPhones, since I think all Siri really needs
is a microphone. The processing all happens at the server side.

As Apple pointed out in that paragraph, the battery test was done using a
number of extremely high performance tasks and whether this will make a
difference in "real world" usage is not obvious.

Thanks for the app link and the reminder that there are two different

Hi Sean,

I don’t totally know how this works, but I don’t think what you say is correct.
Pronounciation seems to have changed in iOS 9 for the enhanced US English voice
and I don’t think this is entirely controlled by Nuance. If it were then a user
dictionary wouldn’t even be possible.

Also, what are you going to shoot with that 30 Cal Shotgun of yours? Mice?
*smile*
Sorry for the joke, I know people don’t necessarily know what 30 Caliber is and
that it has no connection to shotguns which have a “Gauge” designation, but I
like to joke around.
When it comes to hunting or military rifles, 30 Caliber is very common and a
reasonably powerful caliber and it covers a wide range of actual calibers or
specific ammunition.
The 30 Cal only refers to the barrel’s diameter which is 308 of one thousands
inch or 7.62mm in metric.
The actual calibers or ammunitions it covers would be things like 30-06
Springfield, 300 Winchester Magnum, 308 Winchester which is the same as 7.62x51
Nato etc. But enough of the ammo lesson, maybe I should start a list for that
*smile*.

Hey guys. I've just tested a sentence with an abbreviation. I put in 30 cal.
shotgun and noticed something interesting. Out of all the voices I've tested,
which are Alex, Daniel, the US Siri voice and Karen, the only one that didn't
say calories for the abbreviation C Aa L is Alex. This leads me to believe that
it's an issue with the Nuance voices specifically because Alex doesn't do that
kind of thing. Granted, he still does abbreviations for days of the week, but
that's all. If this were to be fixed, Apple would have to work with Nuance
because those voices are from that developer. And I kinda wonder if Apple would
want to take that extra time to do just that. That's why I think it would be
cool to use other voices besides the Apple or Nuance voices.

I agree, but I also paid the same amount of money for my iPhone as
everyone else, so I should expect the same support. This bug has been
present for around 9 months, so I think a certain amount of impatience
is understandable. Also, the number of bug reports is irrelevant to me.
The iPhone is a high end device, so a customer, whether blind or
sighted, should not have to expect a lot of bugs. Furthermore, Apple can
address a large number of bugs in several ways. They could put more
developers on fixing bugs for example. This is a business decision on
Apple's part. Note that Apple is not unique in this case.

JIT is the “just in time” compiler. Basically, it makes app that require a lot
of compiling of non-native code, to run a lot faster. This allows some games
that open other code not shipped with the app to run faster, like emulators for
game systems.

I'd think it would happen on most iPhones, since I think all Siri really

Good list of ideas. I think the ones I would like to see the most are file
management and the ability to install system wide voices. In IOS 7, Apple did
allow developers to use the voices that are built in, now they need to allow
you to install other voices and have them available for everything including
voice over. Both platforms have a lot to offer, but when it comes to
flexibility and the ability to customize things, Android is still pretty far
ahead.

RE: The Top 10 Things I'd like in iOS 10

2016-06-05 Thread Ekstrand, Pamela A. -ND
Sandy,

Thanks for this. I had never noticed it before. I need to play with this some
more, but it does appear that it might do what I was looking for. It does
announce the first occurrence of the word as you type it, however, I am having
trouble figuring out how to locate what it found on the screen. It does have a
find next and previous, which is what I wanted.

I will need to do a little more experimenting.

Also, the items under "Share" do say they are draggable if you double tap and
hold, so I am assuming they can be reordered in the list, but if I double tap
and hold, nothing seems to happen. Does this work for anyone else?

Thanks again.

Pam,

I just noticed this yesterday! When in a webpage, tap on the "share" tab at
the bottom of any page in Safari, you will get the usual list of apps which
could accept the webpage linked address, plus bookmarks etc. There is also a
search/find option. I didn't try it, as I was doing something else, but maybe
you could?

Sandy.

Thanks.

Re: The Top 10 Things I'd like in iOS 10

2016-06-05 Thread Harry Bell
I agree that Siri is the big improvement to come: If Siri is to be radically
improved in 2017, will that only happen on the very latest iPhone (is Siri
improvement hardware dependent?) or would a variety of fairly recent iPhone
models be able to use it (is Siri mostly software dependent?)? I ask because
I'm wondering whether to upgrade from my iPhone 5s this year or wait till
September 2017. Thanks. Harry

RE: Refurbished iPhones from gazelle

2016-06-05 Thread Vicky Collins
First, no, Gazelle doesn't have an operation in, or deliver to,
Canada. I'll provide the link and that specific information in a
moment.

I did buy some phones from Gazelle last year, and I was perfectly
happy with my transactions. I wanted to participate in the
public beta of iOS 9, but didn't want to risk the iPhone 6 I was
then using. So, I purchased a used 16 GB iPhone 5S from Gazelle,
bought the model listed in excellent condition and got it for one
hundred fifty dollars less than Apple would have charged, but
without the one year manufacturer warranty from Apple. They
shipped quickly and tracking information was provided.

RE: Losing focus

2016-06-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Mary,

We have seen a number of bugs in recent years which seem to effect some more
than others so this could very well be one of those.
Also, strictly speaking there may be a difference in processor between your
iPhone 6S and my iPhone 6S Plus. Either one of these models have Apple's A9
chip, but Apple does not manufacture the chip and for the 6S and 6S Plus they
have, I think for the first time, given the manufacturing to two companies:
Samsung and TSMC. When the 6S and 6S Plus were first released last fall there
were some phones with what some said was a "bad" chip and I believe they were
all phones that have the Samsung chip. There are still many articles and tests
where it is claimed that the TSMC chip runs cooler and performs slightly better
especially when it comes to battery performance. If you want to find out which
chip your phone has you need a free app called Lirum System Info Lite, here is
the app store link:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/lirum-device-info-lite-system/id591660734?mt=8

On the main information screen (the app seems to be pretty accessible) it give
you the device's capacity, free space and used space and it is followed by the
model of the chip. Here is what is says in the article, I am pasting the full
text of the article below this:

If the model is N71AP (6s) or N66AP (6s Plus), it means your phone has the
Samsung chip (and therefore you might experience slightly reduced battery life).
If on the other hand you see N71MAP or N66MAP it means you have the TSMC
processor.

My 6S Plus, by the way, has the Samsung chip. Here is the text of the entire
article:

As you may have read, there are two different versions of the A9 processor
powering Apple’s new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. One chip is made by Samsung
(fractionally smaller), and the other by TSMC.

Apple says there’s no real difference between the processors (it used two
different manufacturers to avoid supply issues), but it’s reported that devices
with the TSMC processor run cooler and can give users up to 2 hours of
additional battery life. There’s no way of knowing which processor your iPhone
has simply by looking at it, but there is a simple trick you can use to find
out what’s inside.

All you need to do is install the free Lirum Device Info Lite app, and look at
the model number at the bottom of the main page.
If you see N71AP (6s) or N66AP (6s Plus), it means your phone has the Samsung
chip (and therefore you might experience slightly reduced battery life).
If on the other hand you see N71MAP or N66MAP it means you have the TSMC
processor.

Apple says that it really doesn’t matter which chip your new iPhone has.
Responding to the battery life claims, the tech giant said in a statement:

Certain manufactured lab tests which run the processors with a continuous heavy
workload until the battery depletes are not representative of real-world usage,
since they spend an unrealistic amount of time at the highest CPU performance
state. It’s a misleading way to measure real-world battery life. Our testing
and customer data show the actual battery life of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s
Plus, even taking into account variable component differences, vary within just
2-3 percent of each other.

Sieghard

Hello list
I purchased music from the appstore but after I indicated that I want to pay I
got a message that there was a problem. Then the buy button showed that it was
not available, so I was not sure that the payment went through but now when I
get to the same item it gives the price without saying unavailable. I am not
sure if the payment went through because nothing was downloaded.

I have a 6S, not a plus, but the processor and everything is the same where
this should matter. And so far as I can see, nothing has changed on this pause.
I guess I'm just not lucky.

Strange sonos issue

2016-06-05 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hi, I’m having a strange issue with my Sonos and i wonder if anyone has had a
similar experience:
I have updated my Sonos to the latest public beta and now it keeps nagging at
me that there’s an update to the app available, only when i press the ”update
now” button, i immediately get a dialog informing me that no update is
necessary and that the system is up to date. What gives here?
/Krister

Re: The Top 10 Things I'd like in iOS 10

2016-06-05 Thread 'Sandratomkins' via VIPhone
Pam,

I just noticed this yesterday! When in a webpage, tap on the "share" tab at
the bottom of any page in Safari, you will get the usual list of apps which
could accept the webpage linked address, plus bookmarks etc. There is also a
search/find option. I didn't try it, as I was doing something else, but maybe
you could?

Re: app store suddenly prompting for password

2016-06-05 Thread 'RobH.' via VIPhone
I share your concerns and not convinced it isn't a fishing thing hidden in a
rogue app. So I ignore, it hasn't stopped me using
the appstore weeks later when I wanted to. The prompt plagued me for weeks.

Hi,

Yesterday I suddenly received an alert asking me to enter my app store
password. It seemed to be the app store asking for it but I had not
used the app store up to that time in the day.

Has anyone else seen this behavior before and what is causing it? I
just closed the alert and haven't seen it again yet but was concerned it
might be malware or something.
