Re: Apple offering custom 'Grammy Awards experience' and 4 months free of Apple Music via Shazam

2019-02-11 Thread Richard Turner

Siri works almost flawlessly to identify songs. The only reason Shazam was
apparently needed last evening was that was part of the requirement of the deal
to get a 4 month free trial of Apple Music.
I was surprised because I thought Apple had bought Shazam and incorporated it
into Siri, but that must have been just a rumor.
In any case; I only installed Shazam to get the offer. I won't be using it.

I downloaded the app; then asked Siri what song is playing and it identified

And… It worked. Easy peasy… Free Apple Music until June 10th baby. After that,
it’ll then be time to try to score a free Spotify trial.
As a side note, I don’t know if it was part of the premium experience, but I
noticed that after I upgraded to Pandora Premium, with the trial, I found the
iOS app on the iPhone to be a lot less intuitive. Maybe it was just a simple

For those who may be interested in giving Apple Music a try. I believe the four
month free trial subscription is for new customers only though.
I scored a three month Pandora premium radio trial for free back in November
that’s expiring in a few days. This will allow me to switch over to Apple Music
and give that service a run for a while at no cost.
Anyway, seems pretty straight forward. Launch Shazam. Identify a song that’s
being played during the show and follow the steps to redeem the Apple Music
trial sub.

RE: net flix

2019-02-11 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I don’t know if that is different here in Canada, but movies with audio
descriptions on iTunes are few and far between. My wife and I often look and
look to find something which has audio descriptions and there are all these new
movies which come out and which seem not to have audio descriptions, one
example is the newest Indiana Jones movie let alone all the old ones. The fact
is that I know they are described since I used to have them on video tape back
in the 90’s with descriptions. Netflix is probably the best when it comes to
putting audio descriptions on new content although we were just looking at a
movie called Wind River which shows up if I tap on movies and filter for audio
described, but when I play it there are no descriptions and no option to turn
them on.
Just because a few movies come out with audio descriptions does not mean one
can’t be critical and wonder why not every single movie or TV show that is
produced has them, after all, everything has closed captioning and that has
been so for a very long time.

Personally, I am very appreciative of the movies and TV series which I can now
get with Audio description. This was so limited just a few years back and I
would think it pretty involved to get the additional sound track for this
service.
My local movie theater now has AD for all movies and the headphones to access
it so I can now enjoy going to the movies without having anyone try to help me
follow the story. Why can’t we all just be appreciative for the many
improvements made for a very minority group?
Lately all the movies I have purchased from Apple are described, all Netflix
originals are described and Blind Mice Mega Mall has a large collection of
sound tracks in MP3 format.
In addition we have a plethora of audio books to enjoy.

audio description but it didn’t make sense to me. It sounded like you select
the movie first and then you will then need to do something else to find out if
it has audio description.

RE: Mac OS Accessible DVD Ripper Recommendation Request

2019-02-11 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Brett,

I do not recall anyone ever being banned from this group for posting Mac, or
for that matter, Microsoft Windows, questions.

The relevance of the question is that I prefer to watch virtually all of my
video content on either my iPhone or Apple TV. At present, I need to rip
video from a DVD and I am seeking a Mac OS VoiceOver software solution by
which I may accomplish my goal.

For whatever reason, my Windows 7 DVD ripping software is not performing as
expected and I think I'll begin using my Mac for this purpose.

I apologize for not being more clear on why I posted this question to the
list.

I think he may have been referring to the Pandora app being somewhat difficult.
Again, I found it to be nice and simple when it was free, but after I upgraded
to premium, the app got all busy and harder to use. Anyway… My trial ends soon
enough so I’ll see if it goes back to the simple layout or if the design change
was an overall thing.

I never used Shazam before either. once I got the redemption, I removed it from
my phone. Still trying to figure out Apple Music.

Re: To AppleCare or not....that is the question

2019-02-11 Thread Brent Harding
I had a problem back with the iPhone 7, where the charging just quit working
randomly one day. Apple did replace it for free while I still had Apple
Care, I think you get your first year free, and what you're paying for is
the second year, but when the second one exhibited the same exact issue, I
ended up having to pay around $300 for a replacement, because the first year
coverage had lapsed by then. Now, I am on the Apple upgrade plan, where a
256 GB XR is about $43 a month with Apple Care included. Since these are
effectively 0 interest loans with the option to upgrade after the first
year, it seems mathematically the same as if you paid it up all at once with
the Apple Care included. I am glad that the XR seems to have a lot sturdier
connection when you plug in the lightning cord, it seems to take more force
to pull it out of there than the 7's did, but hopefully whatever was made
defectively in a few batches back then won't be a problem again. I would've
thought for sure they would fix the port and send back the one I had, but
something leads me to believe that the problem was with something else, as
they didn't look damaged or anything that one could easily see. The other
benefit I heard you can get with Apple Care is that they will overnight you
a different phone to use first if you give them a credit card, and then once
they fix your broken one, you either send in the replacement after they send
that back, or if is something they can't fix easily, you keep the
replacement and they do whatever they do with the old one and it's no
charge. I thought about adding the loss and theft coverage for piece of
mind, but there are probably better third-party ways to get insurance for
that type of thing that cost less.

It covers accidental damage I think twice, once for each of the two years,
but if your phone needs to be replaced that is also not free. I have no
idea how much it costs nowadays with the expensive phones like the XR or
XS.
Gone are the days when Apple Care Plus was $79 or $99. The last time I had
Apple Care Plus was on my 6S Plus back in 2015. I lost that phone about 3
months after I got it when I was visiting my families ranch at Christmas
that year. I went for a walk up their driveway which is gravel and about
three quarters of a mile long. At the time it was of course covered in
snow since we are talking about northern British Columbia and the
temperature was minus 30 Celsius (about minus 22 Fahrenheit. When I got
back home I realized the phone wasn't in the chest pocket of my down
parka. Trying to call it or use Find my iPhone was useless because in
these temperatures and without being close to body heat the phone would
have shut down in less than 5 minutes. Various members of my family spent
about 10 hours searching without luck. Fortunately I had my phone added to
my homeowner's insurance as an extra item with a 0 deductible. That only
costs about $30 a year extra and unlike Apple Care Plus it does cover loss
or theft. The insurance paid the full price for a new phone. About 4
months later after the snow was gone in mid April my brother found the
phone. I asked him to stick it in a bag of rice and mail it to me, that
took a few days and when it arrived I took it out and plugged it in. At
first nothing happened, but to my surprise when I checked it an hour or so
later Voiceover came right up, I could unlock it with my PIN and as soon
as I did it started dinging and making all sorts of noises as it connected
to my WiFi and 4 months worth of emails, messages and notifications went
off. In the end I realized that the phone worked perfectly fine with two
exceptions: the screen was black in other words it somehow didn't work any
more even though I could do anything using Voiceover. And yes, I did of
course check if the screen curtain was on and it was not. The second issue
was that the camera did not work any more. Now that I had the physical
phone back I took it to an Apple Store and after paying $129.99 Canadian
they replaced it with a new phone.
Quite a few people on this list who have been here for a few years heard
the story before, but I recounted it just to make the point that just the
cost of Apple Care Plus does not cover a phone replacement. Given how
expensive Apple Care Plus has become I am no longer buying it. Water
damage is almost impossible nowadays with an iPhone 8 or anything above it
because the phones are virtually waterproof and the X series phones even
more so than the 8 and the 8

Yes, I did the same thing when my phone was new. I couldn't figure out why

I find the two finger single tap very useful, especially when someone comes

Kinda like hitting the control key to stop JAWS from speaking .

I haven't used the three finger double tap to turn off speech completely, but
am sure there are uses for it.

If you were reading a page on the internet and turned off voice over to stop it
from speaking, then, when you turn it on again, it will not be in the same
place you were before you turned it off.

Using the 'speech off' feature, voice over will start just where you left off
on the page when you tap to start again.

Hope this makes sense.

Carolyn,
People with low-vision and some normally sighted folks sometimes like to use
speech output, but they do not need it all the time.
So, under settings, general, accessibility there is a speech section where you
can turn on speak screen; then the phone or iPad won't talk unless you do a two
finger swipe down from the status bar.
This method would allow someone to have the phone read to them; without having
to learn VoiceOver.
You can even lock the phone/iPad, and it will keep reading until you stop it.
So, it is a very good thing they are not the same.

If VoiceOver is on but speech is off, you might hear clicks when
touching the screen; but you would still have to use VoiceOver gestures to do
anything.
It is pointless unless you just want to keep VoiceOver silent; so it
doesn't announce things etc.
And, about screen curtain; it has been shown that if you leave screen
curtain on for a little while; the screen brightness is turned to zero. So, if
dimming the screen saves battery; so does screen curtain.

I'm using version 11.19.0 and I do not get the results you do.

Yes, this does bring up a few movies, and there is a button for more
Audio Description in English under the Explore more heading. But there
are only four pages of listings, scrolling down does nothing to pull up
more results.  I know from past searches in earlier versions there are
dozens of pages of described material.

At this point i have to say that the app is not a reliable way of
looking for DVS material The web site, while it can be cluttered for
some does allow a search of genres under the Audio description
category.  Once a title link is activated, there is an Add To my list or
Remove from my list option that appears as a link on the movie title's page.

John,

Is Mac DVD Ripper Pro completely VoiceOver accessible? Or are there unlabelled
buttons. Is it free? Or is there a charge.

Can I find Mac DVD Ripper Pro in the Mac app store or should I go to a website.

Re: net flix

2019-02-11 Thread Marie N.

RE: To AppleCare or not....that is the question

2019-02-11 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Yes, the phone is still covered for 1 year, but I believe Apple Care Plus will
give you additional coverage during that first year and for a second year.
Not sure if the regular 1-year warranty covers accidenmtal damage like if you
were to drop the phone or if it is just a warranty should something go wrong
with the phone which is a manufacturers defect.

At one time, buying a new iPhone at the Apple Store or through the
major US carriers would automatically give you a year of Apple Care.
I'm not sure if this is true anymore, but I learned of the added
coverage when I had a small issue with my phone a few years ago. I
took it to the Apple Store and one of their reps informed me of the
year coverage. The US insurance company which offers insurance
coverage for an added fee is called Asurian, or something like that.
My wife dropped her phone last fall and had it replaced. Last week,
she was shopping and reported to me later that the phone jumped out of
the cart, and the screen cracked again. She will be contacting Asurian
soon to get it replaced a second time. I think that we're going to
invest in a strong screen protector for her phone given the frequency
of these accidents. I think the Asurian coverage will cover up to 2
replacements per year but am not sure. I have not gotten any
additional Apple Care, other than the one I had mentioned above, since
I'm always very careful. I learned from a coworker that Tech Armour
makes some ballistic strength glass screen protectors for about $10 on
Amazon, which sound like agreat investment, especially if those
little accidents happen.

Playing music on the fly annoyance in Spotify?

2019-02-11 Thread Gerardo Corripio
Very good morning/evening whatever time you guys are checking EMails. I've been
with Spotify almost 3 years, and something I've not seen is the ability to
start playing an album, or Playlist from the beginning like you see in Deezer,
or the Apple Music app; you usually have a button among the Context menu
options, that says "Play" or "Start Playing" without having to flick through
the album or playlist tracks, until you can get to the first track of the list,
in which via double-tapping it starts playing, bringing you to the Now_Playing
screen, like you do on Spotify. Is there any workaround while Spotify
implements this feature that really saves you time? All you want to do is
listen to an album or Playlist, and not worry about what's the first song on
it! Would you guys consider this an annoyance of sorts? When Spotify fixes this
issue, then it’ll be a 100% accesible/funcional. Yes it’s good as it is, but if
they could implement the before/mentioned feature?

2019-02-11 Thread ilovecountrymusic483
Hi,

I recommend it even if you never use it as if something goes wrong you will be
good to go. I usually try to get insurance for my devices if possible as I
feel that not having it is go wrong and not have it and you have to pay more
out of pocket to get it fixed. JMO.

Hi,

I have always routinely purchased AppleCare, but have never really had any
reason to use it.

I still have a few weeks before the deadline for purchasing AppleCare for my XS.

I’m curious how others on this list are viewing AppleCare.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Best, Keith

2019-02-11 Thread Richard Turner

Netflix 11.19 is the latest update so anyone not on that version may want to
update.
Make sure Audio Description is set to on in settings, and on your first Netflix
show with audio description; make sure you pause the show if you are not
hearing the description; double tap on audio settings; and then on your
language with audio description. From that point on; audio descriptions will
play automatically.
And, the best most up to date list of audio described shows is on the ACB web
site that both I and at least one other person have posted.
