RE: What is a VPN and how does it relate to community Wi-Fi

2019-05-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You can't "find" them like a Wi-Fi, you setup a VPN connection to any public
Wi-Fi using either free or paid VPN client software. Just Google something like
"How does a VPN work" or "VPN networks explained" and you'll find a lot of good
information about it.

in iOS 11 this could be disabled. In iOS 12 it seems not.

Hello folks,
Does anyone know how to remove the flash light and the camera buttons from the
locked phone screen? As you know, when the phone is locked, the flash light
and the camera buttons are still accessible. I do not want them to be there.
Very often, as I put the phone in my pocket, my finger touches one of them by
mistake and activates it. That drains my phone battery out. The other day
while I was in the train in the underground, Someone alerted me that my phone
flash light is on because he can see strong light coming out of my pocket. It
was funny in a way, but also annoying.
I looked through all the phone’s settings to see if I can remove these buttons
but I was not able to locate the setting to hide these buttons from the locked
screen.

If anyone knows how, I will extremely appreciate it.

Hi Herry,

Thank you for this, but I can’t seem to use this as I copied and pasted below
the reason.

How to Remove Camera from Lockscreen in iOS 12 or Later

Step #1. Launch Settings app on your iOS device → Tap on Screen Time.

Janet got this far, that is as far as I could get. In this session, I got the
message saying to turn on turn on screen time, and I got a message saying I
could get a weekly report about my screen time etc. That’s all I get. I even
turned on the screen time to see what other options I would get, but I didn’t
get any options like what it says in these instructions.

Step #3. Next, tap on Content & Privacy Restrictions. If you had enabled
passcode for Screen Time, you need to enter it.

Step #4. Turn on the switch next to Content & Privacy Restrictions.

Step #5. Next up, tap on Allowed Apps.

Step #6. Finally, turn off the switch next to Camera. Now, quit the Settings.

How to Disable Camera Access from iPhone Lockscreen in iOS 12 or Earlier

Last Updated: Jan 21, 2019

No longer want anyone to access the Camera right from the Lock screen of your
iPhone or iPad running iOS 12, iOS 11 or Earlier? Check out this quick tip to
disable the unauthorized access to Camera on your iOS device.

Many a time, we quickly want to snap a pic of the beautiful moments so that
they can be cherished forever. And that’s the time when Camera app access from
iPhone’s Lock Screen comes in very handy. Just swipe left on the screen to jump
to the camera, hit the shutter button and you are done!

While this is undoubtedly a cool feature, some of you may want to disable the
Camera access from Lock Screen on your iPhone to prevent anyone from snapping
shots without your permission. Luckily, iOS lets you restrict the app but with
a little catch.

When you put the stock camera app under restriction, it’s hidden not just from
LS but also from your device. Moreover, it doesn’t show up even in the
Spotlight Search. So, use this trick only when you want to keep this app
completely out of sight.

Quick access:

* Prevent Camera Access from Lock Screen in iOS 12 or Later
* Disable the Camera Access from the Lock screen in iOS 11 or Earlier

Check out; you’ve successfully stopped the Camera app from being opened from LS
on your iPhone!

Later, if you decide to remove the restriction, simply follow the same steps
explained above and then turn on the switch in the end.

One more thing worth noting is that “Restriction” has become the part of Screen

Hi Cris,

Thank you for this, but I already have raise to wake turned off. I also have
tap to wake turned off, but still the flash light can still come on if I
accidentally put my phone in my purse the wrong way, and a few hours later if I
take my phone out of my purse, it is extremely warm, and that is how I know the
flash light has been on since I put the phone in my purse.

This is so annoying! I still just don’t get what is the whole point to having
the flash light on a locked screen! Guess I’ll never know as it makes no sense
to me, now, if I wanted it on my locked screen, I would add it to the locked
screen.

Hi Janet,

I guess for the time being, and until apple decide to listen to customer’s
wishes, the only advice is to change two settings on your iPhone. First you go
to settings, and go to display and brightness and turn raise to wake off. The
second is to go to settings, general accessibility and turn tap to wake off.
This way, once you lock your phone, you won’t be inadvertently activating the
camera or turning the flash light on as you put the phone in your purse or take
it out.

For iPhones, the keys for VO commands are control plus options, not the command
key.
The bottom row is control, function, options, command, spacebar, command,
options, left arrow, down arrow then right arrow.
You'll notice the up arrow is the top half of the down arrow, it is a split key.
I gather you got it paired.
So, to turn on practice mode, it is control plus options and k.

Re: Logitech K480 Multi-Device Bluetooth Keyboard question please.

2019-05-15 Thread Richard Turner

For iPhones, the keys for VO commands are control plus options, not the command
key.
The bottom row is control, function, options, command, spacebar, command,
options, left arrow, down arrow then right arrow.
You'll notice the up arrow is the top half of the down arrow, it is a split key.
I gather you got it paired.
So, to turn on practice mode, it is control plus options and k.

Richard

HI Cris,
I’m happy to hear this! If you just set these features to off, just pay
attention still when you pick up the phone, or if you remove it from your
pocket, and you accidentally touch the power button. Then, you will know if it
really will work for you. I wish it would work for me as well though! Smile!

Hi Again Janet,
Luckily after I turned raise to wake off and tap to wake off, my screen shuts
off completely if I press the power key. My screen does not come back on to
life again until I press the power key again. This solution works for me, but
unfortunately I had to sacrifice two of the features I love about the iPhone.

Hi Cris,
Thank you for this, but I already have raise to wake turned off. I also have
tap to wake turned off, but still the flash light can still come on if I
accidentally put my phone in my purse the wrong way, and a few hours later if I
take my phone out of my purse, it is extremely warm, and that is how I know the
flash light has been on since I put the phone in my purse.

This way, once you lock your phone, you won’t be inadvertently activating the
camera or turning the flash light on as you put the phone in your purse or take
it out.

Again thank you as now I can stop beating myself over the head trying to find
or figure out how to get rid of this! I still don’t understand the whole
purpose of having the flash light or the camera on the locked screen though,

Hi Again Janet,
Luckily after I turned raise to wake off and tap to wake off, my screen shuts
off completely if I press the power key. My screen does not come back on to
life again until I press the power key again. This solution works for me, but
unfortunately I had to sacrifice two of the features I love about the iPhone.

Hi Anthony,

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. It's a way to securely connect to a
particular computer system. That way, if you are on a network you are unsure
about, you can connect to the VPN and through it to the Internet. It's slower
but more secure than a standard connection.

I run iOS 12.3, I usually run whatever is the latest Beta, in the case of 12.3
I received the official release yesterday as well since apparently it changed
from the last public beta release. I do, however, not have an iPhone XR or XS,
but an iPhone 8. Maybe it is not on the older phones, where exactly on the lock
screen is this supposed to be? If I press the side button to wake up my phone I
have the following:

The time is announced and currently if I swipe left I can’t go any further than
9:41 AM
If I swipe right I hear Wednesday, May 15, 2019
If I swipe right again I get “Press Home to Unlock button
Then another swipe right gets me Page 2 of 3
That is the last element on the screen.
If I go to Page 3 of 3 it is my Camera screen and Page 1 of 3 is the Today
screen.
If I tap on “Press Home to Unlock” I get the “Touch Id or enter passcode”,
there is the passcode field where it says 0 of 6 values entered, the keypad is
on the screen and the only other button I see is the Emergency button on the
bottom left of the keypad.
My wife who is sighted and who also has an iPhone 8 just confirmed the same,
the only Flashlight button she has is in the Control Centre.
I guess if there is a flashlight button on the lock screen on the XR then it’s
an XR feature and since there was no iOS 11 any more when the XR came out the
iOS version shouldn’t matter unless the original iPhone X which was released in
the fall of 2017 together with iOS 11 had the flashlight button and it could be
disabled.

I guess for the time being, and until apple decide to listen to customer’s
wishes, the only advice is to change two settings on your iPhone. First you go
to settings, and go to display and brightness and turn raise to wake off. The
second is to go to settings, general accessibility and turn tap to wake off.
This way, once you lock your phone, you won’t be inadvertently activating the
camera or turning the flash light on as you put the phone in your purse or take
it out.

Regards,

Cris

Hi Keith,
Thank you for this, as I searched and searched, but I couldn’t find anything
related to the annoying flash light or the camera.
Again thank you as now I can stop beating myself over the head trying to find
or figure out how to get rid of this! I still don’t understand the whole
purpose of having the flash light or the camera on the locked screen though,
but I guess this is what Apple wants and what Apple wants Apple gets regardless
of what customers might want!

2019-05-15 Thread janet gross
HI Cris,
I completely understand what you are saying about the annoying flash light and
the camera. I have the exact samething on my XR phone 12.2, and lock screen,
and when I put my phone in my purse, sometimes the flash light comes on, and I
lose quite a bit of my battery, but I don’t know this until I take my phone out
of my purse, and the phone is extremely warm. When the flash light is on, my
phone is all lit up, and as a blind person, I only know this when a sighted
person is around, and they tell me Janet you must have the flash light on
because your phone is lit up like a Christmas Tree, and then I realize that is
why my phone is so warm! I then check my battery, and sure enough, I’ve lost
quite a bit of battery! I don’t need the camera on the lock screen either
because when I go to my home screen, there is the camera as well. This drives
me crazy, and I’ve asked other people how to remove the flash light, but I
never get an answer. I didn’t have this when I used my iPhone 6 either!
I’ve looked all through my phone, but I can’t find anything about the flash
light or how to remove it from the locked screen. This causes to much battery
loss! I’m constantly checking my phone when the phone is in my purse to be for
sure it doesn’t feel warm because the flash light might be on again, because I
don’t want to have to try to make a call, but the battery is drained!

Hi Sieghard,
I am not talking about the control center, I am talking about the locked
screen. Unfortunately I have both the flash light button and the camera button
on my iPhone XR using iOS 12.3. I wish I could at least remove the flash light
button. It happened quite few times that I turned the flash light on as I put
the phone in my pocket. Sometimes just a simple light touch turn it on. I
would only realize that the flash light is on when I feel my pocket heating up
or if someone tells me to turn the flash light off.

Cheers,

How to Disable Camera Access from Lockscreen in iOS 12 on iPhone

Prevent Camera Access from Lock Screen in iOS 12 or Later
Disable the Camera Access from the Lock screen in iOS 11 or Earlier
How to Remove Camera from Lockscreen in iOS 12 or Later

Step #1. Launch Settings app on your iOS device → Tap on Screen Time.

Check out; you’ve successfully stopped the Camera app from being opened from LS
on your iPhone!

Later, if you decide to remove the restriction, simply follow the same steps
explained above and then turn on the switch in the end.

One more thing worth noting is that “Restriction” has become the part of Screen
Time in iOS 12. If your device is running iOS 11 or earlier, keep reading.

How to Disable the Camera Access from the Lock screen in iOS 11 or Earlier

To prevent Camera access from the Lockscreen of your iPhone, make sure you have
enabled Restrictions on your device.

Step #1. Launch Settings app on your iPhone → Tap on General.

Step #2. Next, tap on Restrictions → Enter your Restrictions passcode.

Step #3. Finally, toggle the switch next to the Camera.

That’s it!

>From now on Camera won’t be accessed from the Lock screen. Besides, you will
>find it missing on your iPhone.

If you ever wish to enable it again, go to Settings → General → Restrictions →
Enter passcode and turn on the switch next to the camera.

That’s done!

Subject: RE: does anyone know how?

I guess if there is a flashlight button on the lock screen on the XR then it’s
an XR feature and since there was no iOS 11 any more when the XR came out the
iOS version shouldn’t matter unless the original iPhone X which was released in
the fall of 2017 together with iOS 11 had the flashlight button and it could be
disabled.

Sieghard

I had the same problem yesterday with one of those scammers that I did not
answer. My sighted husband managed to get it out. I'll keep Airplane Mode in
mind. Plus on another list, suggestions:

Turn VO off then back on
Turn phone off then on
Use rotor (which I did try, but no go with it)

I am assuming that you have an iPhone. Try going into settings and turn
on Airplane mode, then try deleting your voice mail. I had that problem a few
weeks back and that did it for me. I don’t remember where I heard it but that
solution allowed me to remove the voice mail messages from my phone. Remember
when you are done to turn airplane mode back off.

RE: Question and problem with sync iPhone contacts

2019-05-15 Thread Rob Armstrong
I use iCloud to sync my contacts and calendar between my Windows 10 computer
running Outlook 2013 and my iPhone SE.

I probably cannot give a blow by blow description how to set this u. But if you
are interested in trying this approach, you can email me directly. We can
figure it out together.

I used to sync my contacts with ms outlook through iTunes. Lately I realized
that the contacts are not synchronizing anymore.

My iPhone 6S and iTunes are updated. I tried in outlook 2007 and outlook 2010.

What can I do to sync my contacts?

I hope someone can help me please.

RE: does anyone know how?

2019-05-15 Thread Cris Ali
Hi Sieghard,
It sounds that this problem is only associated with the iPhone x of different
variety.
On my XR the flash light button and the camera button are on the bottom of the
screen.

I guess if there is a flashlight button on the lock screen on the XR then it’s
an XR feature and since there was no iOS 11 any more when the XR came out the
iOS version shouldn’t matter unless the original iPhone X which was released in
the fall of 2017 together with iOS 11 had the flashlight button and it could be
disabled.

Sieghard

have the camera’s flash turned on permanently which of course you can change,
you can set it to come on automatically or not at all.
The actual Flashlight as far as I know can only be turned on either by asking
SIRI or by swiping up to the Control Centre and then you do of course have both
the camera and flashlight buttons there. Do you maybe mean the Control Centre
instead of the lock screen?
As far as the Control Centre is concerned you can in fact decide what is on it

deselect the items you want or do not want. You can definitely take the
f;lashlight and camera off if they are on the Control Centre.

Book or tutorials?

2019-05-15 Thread Tom Cramer
Good morning,

I wonder if someone could direct me to a good book or tutorials
regarding the following. I recently got a new laptop/tablet and
wanted to install iTunes and sync certain things from my phone, such
as contacts and other things. I haven't used iTunes for a very long
time and remember it had its issues in the past. Has iTunes gotten
easier to use with JAWS, and is it going to be easy to sync contacts
and phone information? I don't mind doing the work but just want to
know a good place to get started.
Thank you very much.

RE: does anyone know how?

2019-05-15 Thread Cris Ali
Hi Sieghard,
I am not talking about the control center, I am talking about the locked

Cheers,

Cris

Hi Chris,

I am a bit confused here, I don’t have either Flashlight nor Camera on the lock
screen. The Camera can be accessed from the lock screen if you do a 3-finger
swipe from right to left, but even then there is no Flashlight unless maybe you
have the camera’s flash turned on permanently which of course you can change,
you can set it to come on automatically or not at all.
The actual Flashlight as far as I know can only be turned on either by asking
SIRI or by swiping up to the Control Centre and then you do of course have both
the camera and flashlight buttons there. Do you maybe mean the Control Centre
instead of the lock screen?
As far as the Control Centre is concerned you can in fact decide what is on it
or not, just go to Settings > Control Centre > Customize Controls and select or
deselect the items you want or do not want. You can definitely take the
f;lashlight and camera off if they are on the Control Centre.

Regards,
Sieghard

Regards,

Cris

in iOS 11 this could be disabled. In iOS 12 it seems not.

I don't understand Sieghard's claim that it isn't part of his lockscreen
(unless he's running iOS 11 and disabled 3d touch). it certainly is on all
my families phones.

Hi Richard,

You have may have to repair the watch to the phone and see if that still does

That is odd as she has the UK voice on her phone but the new watch which used

Question and problem with sync iPhone contacts

2019-05-15 Thread 'evergreenwoods' via VIPhone
Hello,

I used to sync my contacts with ms outlook through iTunes. Lately I realized
that the contacts are not synchronizing anymore.

My iPhone 6S and iTunes are updated. I tried in outlook 2007 and outlook 2010.

What can I do to sync my contacts?

I hope someone can help me please.

Rena

Voice over on watch

2019-05-15 Thread 'Richard Claridge' via VIPhone
Hi all.
My wife has recently got a new series 4 apple watch. She got it set up and all
worked fine. But now her voiceover voice has changed from UK to US. We can’t
find how to change it back, there seems to be no speech or voice settings in
the settings for voiceover on the watch or in the watch app on the phone.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Richard
