Thanks, I did do the two finger double tap (several of them) and it didn't
work. Swiping didn't give me any information either, there didn't seem to be
any buttons.

RE: Shortcuts not fully accessible in ios13.xx

2019-10-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
There is definitely a bug for many users where Voiceover and, for me at least,
all other sounds and vibrations go away after ending some calls. You should
write to Apple Accessibility and also report it because even though they are
saying that they are investigating the issue with no timeline as to when it
will be fixed, the more complaints they hear, the more likely they are to work
on it.

As for your statement regarding Steve Jobs I can only say that nobody knows
whether anything would be different were he still alive. The iPhone and iOS is
a very different animal now than it was in those first few years and even Steve
Jobs may not have been able to always add "one more thing" and keep everything
as polished as it maybe was in the beginning when they didn't have that many
users and all the competition to keep up with.

Ever since I upgraded to iOS 13 the ”show list” or ”choose from list” option is
not fully accessible in created shortcuts. Oh yeah… And if I don’t immediately
turn off voiceover at the end of a call my phone freezes forcing me to restart.
I have iPhone 6s ios 13.12 and a broken heart that Steve Jobs is no longer
here. Quality has definitely gone down

Well, I don't know what else to say other than what my battery health report
is, as reported to me by Voiceover. Maybe it's because I don't use my

always forward my cell phone calls to the home phone number and if I receive
a text message on my iPhone I'll respond to from the iPhone, but I do most

Subject: Answering Incoming Whatsapp Calls

Good evening,
I recently received my first whatsapp call and was unable to answer it. I can
place a call using whatsapp both from the app and from my contacts list, but
for some reason nothing worked when the call was incoming, it was as though the
screen had frozen. Any idea what may have happened and the best way to work
around it?

I have not downloaded the new IOS, and I am using an IPhone 8.

As ever any advice or help would be most welcome.

Thank you,
Joy

You're doing really good if you have a phone that's three years old with 98
percent battery health. Apple says that once the battery reaches 80 percent
that it needs to be replaced. But I have known a couple of people who started
seeing battery problems at 88 percent. But for now you're doing good.

apple watch

2019-10-10 Thread Jan Stirbens
Hello,

I am using the latest version of iPhone 13.1.2 and the latest version of apple
watch, series 4.
I have my watch paired to mirror the iPhone. When I put my iPhone on mute, and
the watch on mute, when I get a phone call, the watch still rings. Is there a
way to silence the ringer on the watch? I don’t want it ringing in church or a
meeting.
Any help is appreciated. Before the update, all worked fine.

A Message for Low Vision VoiceOver Users of iOS 13 and iPad OS 13, Regarding the Lock Screen Keypad Entry Colors

2019-10-10 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

This post is specifically for those who are both low vision and who are
VoiceOver users of iOS 13 and/or iPad OS 13.

If you purchased a new iPhone 11 series device, then you most likely do not
need to follow the below steps in order to get the OS to display the
correct keypad entry colors, encountered when rebooting the device or
unlocking the device.

If, however, you updated your phone from an earlier version of the OS with
VoiceOver enabled, then you most likely noticed that the lock screen keypad
changed to an aweful shade of black on light gray or something equally as
difficult to see.

The point is that the default lock screen keypad entry color scheme, seen
after updating to iOS/iPad OS 13 is not the correct one. The correct color
scheme is a very easy-to-see, white on black, very high contrast, keypad,
regardless of your display settings.

So far, I have only been able to get the correct keypad entry colors to be
displayed by using the following steps. You only need to do these steps,
once, until you update the OS, again. This is kind of a glitch that all of
us, who are low vision, should relay to Apple.

I have performed these steps on 11 devices, now, and it works every time.
Remember, these steps are intended for low vision VoiceOver users or those
who share their devices with sighted people, in which case a sighted person
can perform them.

1.
With VoiceOver enabled, from system settings, go to Accessability.

2.
Select Display and Text Size.

3.
Make certain that both Smart Invert and Classic Invert are disabled.

4.
Return to the system settings list.

5.
Select Display and Brightness.

6.
Assuming that you have a shortcut key set to enable / disable VoiceOver,
disable VoiceOver.

7.
With VoiceOver disabled, switch between the light appearance and dark
appearance options, at least twice. It does not matter which one you
finally select.

8.
Return to the system settings list.

At this point, you can enable VoiceOver and reboot the phone, if you like.
Personally, I leave VoiceOver off and reboot the device, being certain that
the lock screen keypad entry colors are correct before re-enabling
VoiceOver.

That's all there is to it.

Shortcuts not fully accessible in ios13.xx

2019-10-10 Thread James Lockwood
Ever since I upgraded to iOS 13 the ”show list” or ”choose from list” option is
not fully accessible in created shortcuts. Oh yeah… And if I don’t immediately
turn off voiceover at the end of a call my phone freezes forcing me to restart.
I have iPhone 6s ios 13.12 and a broken heart that Steve Jobs is no longer
here. Quality has definitely gone down

No, if the person isn't in your contacts then you'll just see the number
and you can double tap that to call them back.

On my phone, I open the list showing the text in question, at the top of
the screen is a contact button, and tapping that offers
you all the contact things including call.
There is also Done button to back out of there and when you're done.

Hello,

I’ve done this once before but it must have been dumb luck since I can’t
seem to find the call button to reply to a text message.

Can anyone tell me where it is?

Thank you,

Kim

It reads the number unless you turn that off which I did because it read the
number at least twice.I would rather check my missed calls and see who called
and of course, the people in your contacts can still reach you because your

Answering Incoming Whatsapp Calls

2019-10-10 Thread J.Cyr
Good evening,
I recently received my first whatsapp call and was unable to answer it. I can
place a call using whatsapp both from the app and from my contacts list, but
for some reason nothing worked when the call was incoming, it was as though the
screen had frozen. Any idea what may have happened and the best way to work
around it?

I have not downloaded the new IOS, and I am using an IPhone 8.

As ever any advice or help would be most welcome.

Thank you,
Joy

Not that it applies in any way to the US lottery, but here in New Zealand, the

I assume the fact that he is asking friends or family to buy for him means he
doesn’t like to or is not able to go out himself? There are a lot of places
where you can buy a lottery ticket, here in Canada at most drug stores,
7-Eleven stores etc.

Hello list,

So not for me, but rather a friend who is visually impaired. He’s tired of
asking friends/family to buy him a lottery ticket and being told that it’s out
of their way or they don’t’ have time etc. I don’t really play so have never
looked into anything like this, so I told him I’d ask in case anyone plays
lotto and how they buy their tickets.

I think I’ve heard of online lotto ticket buying services in the past, but
again, never paid it much mind.

Does anyone on here play? This is for California. I don’t know if he plays the
state lotto or just powerball or whatever, but I guess to be on the safe side,
something that covers the national and California super lotto games.
Trustworthy, accessible and on the level and all that.

If so, what service do you use? I think he’s got an iPhone so if there’s an iOS
app that can accomplish the same it would be good to know as well.

Thanks,

Hello everyone,

First of all, thank you to all of you who responded to my questions. I really
appreciate it.

I have purchased Voicedream scanner. I am now trying to learn how to use it. I
do have Voicedream reader as well. I love it, and use it all the time.

Thank you again,

would use Voice Dream Scanner to recognize the document.
I've not tried to open a PDF from the web directly with Voice Dream Scanner
though if it showed up in the share sheet, that would work.

What do I not like about the Voice Dream scanner app? Absolutely Nothing! I
have tried other OCR apps, Voice, KNFB & Seeing AI, neither compares to the

2019-10-10 Thread Gordon
You're doing really good if you have a phone that's three years old with
98 percent battery health. Apple says that once the battery reaches 80
percent that it needs to be replaced. But I have known a couple of
people who started seeing battery problems at 88 percent. But for now
you're doing good.

RE: To Upgrade or not to Upgrade, that is the Question

2019-10-10 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Angie and Everyone,

You know, I must say that while I was planning on waiting for a later version
of iOS 13.x to be released, before updating my 8 Plus, I am definitely glad
that I went ahead and took the proverbial plunge. This is to say that I have
gained much more than I lost.

Now keep in mind that I have yet to experience any loss of VoiceOver under any
circumstances. Also, while I do read some email messages via iPhone, I read
most of my emails on either my Windows PC or my Mac so cannot speak to any
problems with the native iOS Mail app.

I absolutely love the new system-wide hap tic VoiceOver feedback feature. I
think the latest versions of Maps is incredible, especially the new E.T.A
feature. However, what I like most about iOS 13.x and by the same token, iPad
OS 13 is the fact that now, as it was many, many moons ago, all of my ripped
DVD videos play perfectly on all of my Apple devices. This was certainly not
the case in iOS 12 and earlier. I am glad that Apple relinquished its death
grip on the types of videos it would and would not allow to be played on Apple
devices, in the hope of getting customers to purchase / rent videos from the
iTunes Store.

Oh, one more thing, while I am a heavy user of Braille using the original Focus
40 Blue, as yet, I have not attempted to read any lengthy pieces on my Braille
display so cannot speak to any issues regarding Braille displays.

I can tell you, however, that while I adore the new dark mode on my iPad Pro, I
have elected not to engage this new feature on my 8 Plus. Why? Well, the
display seems to be too dark for my taste on the smaller display and I find it
easier to toggle Invert Display on and off, as needed with the Home button.

On the iPhone 11, however, given that there is no longer a Home button, I do
engage Dark mode, using the side button to Toggle VoiceOver on and off, as
needed. As yet, I have not experienced a loss of VoiceOver before, during, or
after calls, of any kind.

I am of the opinion that iOS 12 with Watch OS 5 work much better, together,
than iOS 13 with Watch OS 6, especially where Bluetooth audio switching is
concerned; at least, this has been my experience so far.

Still, all of my "must-have" apps work as expected and I have yet to encounter
any show-stoppers in iOS 13.x, so far.

So, if you have not yet updated to iOS 13.x yet, wait a little longer before
doing so but if you're ready to jump in and begin sending Apple, along with
third-party developers, bug reports as you encounter them, go ahead and make
the leap as we can use all of the proverbial voices we can get in order to get
the attention of all of the developers to resolve various iOS 13.x issues.

Mark

The only thing stopping me from upgrading is the losing sound when ending a

Re: Microwave ovens and iPhone control

2019-10-10 Thread Rebecca Degeorge
i’m relatively new to this list, but I think it is not necessarily kind to tell
someone they’re not looking hard enough for something. Having said that, so far
as talking microwaves go, I know there are some out there, and there are also
models that manufactures can provide a braille overlay for the keypad. Also,
using Dimo tape, it’s possible to have your own microwave marked by your friend
or relative if you braille the various controls. Good luck. Maybe I should’ve
sent this privately, but I don’t know who sent the message in the first place.

And there are still plenty of Microwaves that have tactile marks.

If you don't find any, it's because you're not looking hard enough.

I would look at the Panasonic line of Microwaves.

When you open the text message conversation, that person's name should

Hello,
I recently updated my iOs to version 13.1 and I can no longer switch to english
layout.
My iOs is configured to have Russian as a secondary layout. However, once I
switch to Russian, there is no way to go back. When I press the button to
switch to next layout, it keeps switching between Russian and emoji.
Has anyone else experienced this? Are there any known workarounds?
Thanks
Tony

I find a hard reset is the quickest way for a blind person to fix this, if it
happens on my iPhon e8 I press Volume Up, Volume Down and then press and hold
the power button for about 12 seconds and within 10 or so seconds my iPhone is
back up. It's annoying, but I find I can do the hard reset a lot more reliably
than to turn the phone off and back on without feedback whether the Power Off

I thought that there was some difference in Settngs and going in from the Home
Page, but was not sure what.

Carolyn: Going to settings and then control center will only let you set
options and customize the control center; you can't actually get to it that
way. To access it, you would have to use the 3 finger swipe down from the
status bar, or the VoiceOver gesture for phones without a Home button where you
swipe down from the top of the screen. The control center is the second
vibration. This is only for newer devices.

Re: Voicedream scanner questions

2019-10-10 Thread Bill Outman
Hello.
Voice Dream Scanner is quite. A program for its affordable price. I like the
tone indicator that allows for easy centering of text, and the response is
fast.
For on line PDF’s, you can scan them as long as they are not DRM protected, if
I recall that right. You would also need Voice Dream Reader. You would copy the
file to VDR and it will detect it appears to be an image and ask if you want to
do OCR, which Voice Dream Scanner does. Having VDR also means you have a place
to save the file for later use.
It’s good to have both programs so you have the ability to scan items not found
on line and have a way to save for future reference.I bought the programs
individually as well as Voice Dream Writer, which isn’t as well developed at
this point, but they can be purchased as a bundle.
Hope this is of some use to you.
God bless, whatever your decision.

RE: Microwave ovens and iPhone control

2019-10-10 Thread Cristobal Muñoz
Well, I bought this microwave back in June of last year and I've been pretty
happy with it.
Panasonic Microwave Oven NN-SN966S Stainless Steel Countertop/Built-In with
Inverter Technology and Genius Sensor, 2.2 Cu. Ft, 1250W
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DEWZWDU/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_Qg4NDb6KMZJMV
This is the larger option. I believe there's a smaller 1.2 SQFT version.
What drew me to is is that it's got a tactile keypad. The menus aren't
accessible per say, but that's been true of pretty much any microwave always.
Just a little memorization and maybe jotting down sequences until it becomes
second nature and there you go.
It's a pretty strong appliance and I was at first blowing things up and over
cooking until I got the hang of it. I think it's got a 1250 wat capacity
This one is a beast, so if countertop space is an issue, then maybe the smaller
version would be a safer bet.
I'm not really aware of an iPhone connected model. I guess Alexa connected
devices maybe? Couldn't say since I'm not into the Alexa eco system.

Hi, list.
I am about to purchase a new microwave and am wondering if access through my
iPhone is the best way to go, as most models are touch screen now and don’t
have speech access, and so would need to be labeled.
What app would I need and can it be set up easily?
I have an 8 Plus phone and a 17 inch counter space.

I don't know about an iPhone compatible microwave, but know that there are

Re: Voicedream scanner questions

2019-10-10 Thread Matti Jatkola
Hi,

My experience of Voice Dream Scanner app is very positive. (Have used a
flatbed-scanner with PC for decades, and was very skeptic if ever would move to
scanning in a mobile-phone, in my case Iphone SE.)

For example, Voice Dream Scanner manages to identify text in a CD-cover mostly
correctly. Often those covers have very small print and a couple of shifting
colour-backgrounds. That is why I directly found it as a step ahed that I can
scan a CD-cover without PC, just with an Iphone.

Also, I find the app smart because the audible signal measuring the accuracy is
so intuitive. I mean we blind users skip to listen VoiceOver to talk numeric
analysis of the accuracy. You can move the camera of the mobile right just
following the level of the signal measuring accuracy.

Regards,
Matti

Re: Voicedream scanner questions

2019-10-10 Thread Richard Turner
In my opinion, it is the best OCR app you could buy.
My only wish is that it could handle columns.
But, if it is text in paragraph format, it is brilliant.
If you also have Voice Dream Reader, you could put the PDF in it, and then it
would use Voice Dream Scanner to recognize the document.
I've not tried to open a PDF from the web directly with Voice Dream Scanner
though if it showed up in the share sheet, that would work.

For those of you who use it, what do you think about it?
What are some things you like about it?
And what are some things you don’t like about it?

Also, if I find a PDF online, could I somehow download it to Voicedream
scanner, and read it?
If so, how might I do this?

Any help, or thoughts about this App is much appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

If you get Apple's USB to Lightning camera cable you can plug any USB keyboard
into an iPhone.
Of course I find pairing a Bluetooth keyboard to an iPhone is very easy and
it's very robust, e.g. I have had my Logitech K780
paired to my iPhone 8 from just after I got my iPhone a year ago and any time I
press FN + F2 which switches it from my PC to my
iPhone it's just there, it never seems to unpair or fail.

Are there hardware keyboards that plug into the same socket as the charging

Re: keyboards?

2019-10-10 Thread 'Ray T. Mahorney' via VIPhone
I could have used your help with that keyboard about a week ago. I wasn't
sure what was what with it so I sent it back. For example, I could not work
out how to open apps with the thing. I assumed after the fact that to open
the apps, it was up and down at the same time. I could get into the app
switcher but could not close an open app. There was of course no book with
the thing so I am not sure where I was going wrong with that keyboard. I
liked the concept though.

RE: Accessible and on the level service for buying lottery tickets online?

2019-10-10 Thread Cristobal Muñoz
So going down a rabbit-hole now, I downloaded the California lottery iOS app.
It seems accessible enough. You can check out all the games state-wide and
nationally and their results, but there doesn't appear to be any means to
actually buy a ticket or play any of the games.

Poking around online, there actually appear to be all sorts of sites and
services to purchase lottery tickets from all kinds of games. There are even
sites dedicated to ranking the best and most trustworthy companies to play
with. I mean really, who knew...

I'll pass along this info to him, but again, as I originally asked, if there's
anyone who has played or used any of these online services in an accessible
manner, it would be good to know as well.

Here in Canada you can buy any of the lottery tickets online (Lottomax, 6-49
etc.) at the website PlayNow .

What I don’t know is whether this website is available in the US and offers you
lottery tickets from US and local lotteries there.

from our local grocery store using Instacart, we aren't allowed to request that
they bring lottery tickets as part of the order. I'm not sure why, but there

RE: Accessible and on the level service for buying lottery tickets online?

2019-10-10 Thread Ekstrand, Pamela A. -ND
Interesting question. I think this may be difficult to find. When we order
from our local grocery store using Instacart, we aren't allowed to request that
they bring lottery tickets as part of the order. I'm not sure why, but there
you go. You would think it should be possible for a third party to do this,
but I am not aware of a way.

I don’t know his exact and particular day to day circumstances other than he’s
a bachelor, but I guess physically going to pick one up consistently or as
frequently as he’d like isn’t an option for him.
For those who live in So Cal and are familiar with the area, he lives in San
Bernardino which isn’t the most welcoming or safest place to be wandering
around either.
Not to be throwing his business all out there, but his vision loss is
progressive. I suppose previously he had enough sight to get by, but now…
Anyway, thought I’d do a friend a solid and ask around.

I assume the fact that he is asking friends or family to buy for him means he
doesn’t like to or is not able to go out himself? There are a lot of places
where you can buy a lottery ticket, here in Canada at most drug stores,
7-Eleven stores etc.

Subject: Accessible and on the level service for buying lottery tickets online?

Hello list,
So not for me, but rather a friend who is visually impaired.

Thanks,

RE: To Upgrade or not to Upgrade, that is the Question

2019-10-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I find a hard reset is the quickest way for a blind person to fix this, if it
happens on my iPhon e8 I press Volume Up, Volume Down and then press and hold
the power button for about 12 seconds and within 10 or so seconds my iPhone is
back up. It's annoying, but I find I can do the hard reset a lot more reliably
than to turn the phone off and back on without feedback whether the Power Off
button showed up.

The only thing stopping me from upgrading is the losing sound when ending a
call thing; would hate that to happen when out alone. Otherwise I’m looking
forward to getting my hands on iOS 13

RE: keyboards?

2019-10-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
If you get Apple's USB to Lightning camera cable you can plug any USB keyboard
into an iPhone.
Of course I find pairing a Bluetooth keyboard to an iPhone is very easy and
it's very robust, e.g. I have had my Logitech K780 paired to my iPhone 8 from
just after I got my iPhone a year ago and any time I press FN + F2 which
switches it from my PC to my iPhone it's just there, it never seems to unpair
or fail.

Subject: keyboards?

Are there hardware keyboards that plug into the same socket as the charging
lead, forgot what that is called now. But an hw keyboard on a lead I can plug
into any of the devices without all this BT pairing mode business.

Thanks, RobH.

Re: alternate ways to get to the control center

2019-10-10 Thread Wayne Merritt
Carolyn: Going to settings and then control center will only let you
set options and customize the control center; you can't actually get
to it that way. To access it, you would have to use the 3 finger swipe
down from the status bar, or the VoiceOver gesture for phones without
a Home button where you swipe down from the top of the screen. The
control center is the second vibration. This is only for newer
devices.

RE: Accessible and on the level service for buying lottery tickets online?

2019-10-10 Thread Cristobal Muñoz

Thanks,

RE: Undelivered text messages

2019-10-10 Thread sherrywells1157
There was a long discussion of this problem recently. Are the ones not sending
by any chance Android users? It seems to be a common problem that when you
send to an Android user the message says undeliverable. Some people reported
that the message did go through in spite of the undeliverable message. It
seems that once a message is in your message app, it will send fine in
subsequent tries to that person. Also, someone said it will work if you use
the send message / dictate option rather than Siri.

Susie,

I've never believed that taking care with updates is an ostrich move. I've
been using computers since the IBM PC came out in 1981 and after many
update cycles, I've concluded that a large majority of the updates have
caused more issues than provided features that I couldn't live without.
I'm also waiting until iOS 13.x has a release with fewer bugs for
Voiceover users. I use the FlickType third party keyboard for the majority
of my iPhone input and I need it to work better with iOS than what I'm
hearing how it works with the current iOS 13.1.2. I've also gotten that
prompt to install the iOS 13.1.2 download and after declining it now for
three times, I went into Settings, General, iPhone storage, iOS 13.1.2,
and deleted the download. As Dave said, it will no doubt download again
but at least I've cleared out that almost 2GB of storage and it shouldn't
be prompting me to install anything until it downloads again.

Good morning all.

My iPhone 7S came up and offered me the upgrade last night. I tapped on
“later” and then “disagree”, I hopes this would make it leave me alone for
a while. From reading all the posts on this list (and elsewhere) about
people having a hard time with this upgrade, it occurred to me that it
might be a good idea to hold off until they get some of this stuff fixed.
I am running along very nicely with 12.2 and I’m one of those who does not
need the latest and greatest just because it’s the latest and greatest.

Is this an ostrich move? Am I deluded in thinking that by delaying I will
get a better product when I do upgrade? And how long do I play the
ostrich?

Re: alternate ways to get to the control center

2019-10-10 Thread 'Ray T. Mahorney' via VIPhone
interesting you say that. It occurred to me to try that after I sent my last
reply. It worked. Also a bit more on the keyboard issue. Originally, I thought
I could only delete messages to which I had responded by closing and reopening
the messages app. Seems that’s not the case. While the screen does jump away
from the delete and cancel buttons, you can get back to those buttons by using
the right arrow key. I think I may be sending apple another screenshot.

Hi,
Enable assistive touch. It’s a Icón that will appear on screen. Explore by

Are there hardware keyboards that plug into the same socket as the charging
lead, forgot what that is called now. But an hw
keyboard on a lead I can plug into any of the devices without all this BT
pairing mode business.

Thanks, RobH.

Re: To Upgrade or not to Upgrade, that is the Question

2019-10-10 Thread Angie Nutt
The only thing stopping me from upgrading is the losing sound when ending a
call thing; would hate that to happen when out alone. Otherwise I’m looking
forward to getting my hands on iOS 13

All the best
Angie
