Thanks Liel. That's very kind of you.

Kelly, I use English as my primary language when it comes to
technology, because it makes life so much easier! Moreover, it always
takes time until any assistive technology is available in Hebrew, so
might as well get used to English.

RE: Siri and home button

2020-04-28 Thread Alan Lemly
Deidre,

To change what can be accessed when your iPhone is locked, go to Settings,
Touch ID and Passcode, place the rotor on headings and swipe to the Allow
access when locked heading where you'll find things like the Notification
center, Control center, Siri and others which you'll want to turn on for access
when your iPhone is locked.

Subject: Siri and home button

Hello all,
I now have a phone thats working with some quirky little things and the
screen is not all that sensitive for reasons unknown to me.I I cant rule out
human error, but will see in time.
Im wondering why Siri and voice over both do not work when the phone is
locked. I dont know where theres a setting for What to allow on a locked
screen.I have hey Siri turned off. Ive got Siri activated by pushing on
the home button on, but on allow Siri when phone is locked says its on but
its dimmed out. can someone explain that to me?

RE: Voice Dream Reader problem: Duplicate folder labels

2020-04-28 Thread Richard Turner
I don’t know, but since visually there is no problem, but VoiceOver double
speaks, then to me that is a VoiceOver issue.
It came up out of nowhere for me on two different phones.
Frankly, I’m chalking it up to iOS 13.4.1 but I really have no idea.

Before you do any drastic in Voice Dream Reader, you may have a variation on an
issue I have had twice now.
Suddenly, Voice Over was saying the same file name twice, when visually there
was only one.
If I deleted one, both were gone.
Somewhat accidentally, I discovered that reseting all settings resolved the
issue.
Now, this is a royal pain, because most of the settings you have customized are
back to defaults, like keyboard, Siri, wall paper, rotor, and on and on.
Since this was clearly a VoiceOver issue, since my sighted wife confirmed there
really were only one copy of each file; mucking around in Voice Dream Reader
probably isn't going to solve it.
I would just proceed with caution.

Hi all,
I meant to post this yesterday, but life got in the way. I have a strange
problem with Voice Dream Reader: as per the subject line, I have discovered
that I have multiple instances of the same folder name in my list of folders. I
do not have duplicates of the actual files in the folders, and the “all items”
list shows the right number of items in my library. I have around 15 folders,
but in my folder list there are more than 200 items – at least, there were
until I started to clean them up.
If I delete one of the duplicate folder labels, all the instances of that
folder name are removed and the files in that folder are “moved” to the “no
folder” list. I realize that these are not actual physical folders, but they
are more like the labels used in Gmail, I assume. Having all these duplicate
folder names is very inconvenient, as I discovered to my cost when I wanted to
reorder my folders alphabetically: newly created folders are placed at the
bottom of the list, and it is really tricky to move them all the way up from
position 200 to, let’s say, position 10 in the list.
I think I should be able to straighten things out by making sure my “no folder”
list is empty, deleting a folder, recreating it with the same name, selecting
the contents of the “no folder” list and moving it into the folder I just
created. However, I am really wondering whether anyone else has had a similar
problem, and what I can do in future to prevent it from happening.
A bit of background: I have iCloud Drive on my PC and I usually add items to my
Voice Dream library by placing them in the Loader subfolder of the Reader
folder in iCloud Drive. I also add items to my library using share sheets from
other apps. I happen to have two iPhones, both using VDR and syncing with
iCloud, and my gut feeling is that this could be part of the problem. I always
try to avoid having Voice Dream open on both phones at the same time, but I
cannot guarantee that this has never occurred inadvertently. I can open the
Library folder in iCloud Drive on the PC, but I would hesitate to try to edit
it without knowing exactly what I was doing, as I would really prefer not to
lose files if I can help it. My library is not very large – only about 320
items, many of which are fairly small files – so I don’t think that’s the
problem.
I will contact Voice Dream Support about this, but I thought I’d ask on here as
well, in case anyone has had a similar experience. I believe that these folder
labels must have been proliferating for a while without me even realizing it,
which I know sounds rather strange! It’s easy enough for me to check how many
folders I have by doing a three-finger single tap, but I just never thought to
do it. It certainly explains why I could only ever find new folders by starting
from the bottom of the list.
All the best and sorry for

it without knowing exactly what I was doing, as I would really prefer not to
lose files if I can help it.

All the best and sorry for the long post,

Nicky

Re: Voice Dream Reader problem: Duplicate folder labels

2020-04-28 Thread Richard Turner

Re: GPS app to create a rout

2020-04-28 Thread Kelly Pierce
Ann,

Turn by turn directions are not available in Blind Square. However,
they are available in Apple maps or Google Maps. It is possible to
use both Blind Square and Apple or Google Maps to obtain audio
directions and guidance from both applications. I would suggest new
users familiarize themselves with the interfaces and gain skill in
using Apple and Google Maps before combining one of them with Blind
Square. Your student needs to identify a street address. In Google
and Apple Maps, an edit field can be found when the application is
first opened. In Google and Apple Maps, the student should also be
sure pedestrian mode is enabled. The other options are driving and
transit modes. Turn by turn directions are then provided. Someone can
also reverse their trip in both applications. If someone wants to
simulate a route that starts in a place other than the current
location, then the user just enters the starting address where the
apps say “use my current location.” Try this out yourself.

Zoom, stuck in Mexico

2020-04-28 Thread Traci Duncan
Help please.

Somehow, Zoom thinks I am in Mexico. I cannot change country settings. Not on
iOS or Mac. Since I’m new to this, I’m guessing I messed up in set up. I’ve
looked under phone on the Zoom web, but I cannot make any changes from Mexico.
When I’m on my phone, the country ticker won’t change. Sighted assistance
couldn’t change anything either.

I’m the account owner, but does that automatically make me the admin?

Oy, insert face palm here.

Thank you for any help,
Traci

I never had any wrong feelings about pressing my home button on my iPhone 8. I
checked with apple and if I traded in my iPhone 8 for an new SE I'd get about
$170 in trade in value. If I did decide to get a new SE, I'd see what I could
get if I sold my iPhone 8.

2020-04-28 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all, I called tMobile about this, and they said there is no speed difference
in using my sim card from my 6s. She recommended I make sure my current sim is
in good shape.

Looking forward to my new phone!

The haptic is a button shape cut in to the screen surface itself and vibrates
when you press it or touch it for reasons you need to.

No actual moving parts as such.

The older button is mechanical and you press it down and feel it press down in
to the phones body,

A separate button form the screen

I will answer in context where I can.

So if so how is the audio on it and how long does the battery last so far?

The audio is excellent. I used it on and off all day Saturday partly doing
final setup etc. and I did not need to charge it until that night.

The same on Sunday and I spent several hours reading with Voice Dream Reader;
but of course the phone was locked during the reading so very little battery
used.

But I'd say I used it for over 6 hours actively and plugged it in at almost 10
PM when it was at 20%.

I mean it is know iPhone 11 or 11 pro but is it just as fast as those phones?

Yes, it has the exact same chip, the A13.

Also does this have stereo speakers as well?

Yes, very nice sounding, clear, stereo. The left track is at the home button
end. I tested last evening with Norwegian Wood by the Beatles which starts
with only music in the right track. Holding it landscaped, the stereo was very
clear. I've decided I like the audio quality better than on the 8 plus; but
sound is extremely subjective so take that with a grain of salt.

And is the battery in this phone as big as the one in the 10 XR or does it last
longer then the one in the 10 XR?

I have no idea since I never had an XR. You could look up the specs on each
and see.

And I think that this new phone has A home button as well so does it use touch
ID like the 7 and the sixes used to and even the eights?

Yes, and I find the touch ID much faster, but that could be the difference in
the A13 chip.

Also if you use the camera for things like reading bard codes with seeing AI or
for voice dream scanner how well does it work for that as well?

It works great!

Richard

RE: Chipped my iPhone eights screen

This talk about the screens probably encouraged my dream last night that my
screen had a great big crack in it in the lower left corner. I am not paying
for Apple care, so I knew I was really treed. I have a screen protector, but in
that dream, instead of being glass, it was that yucky plastic.

Re: in the middle of a set up

2020-04-28 Thread Deidre Muccio
It’s all done. I just went to the App Store my purchases re-downloaded a bunch
of those. And then I went to my sisters family sharing link and had no trouble
downloading those. Course I lost all the data. I should’ve just used iTunes to
restore the new phone but it’s an old version of iTunes and I was led to
believe there would be some incompatibility. I’ve learned a bunch of things by
this process in the last day! Including how easy it is to see your passwords
when you don’t use a passcode and anyone can get into your phone. Admittedly
some of the passwords showing our old ones which have long since been changed,
On the old phone anyway. Typically though no one ever has access to my phone.
But if I did lose it on the street… I have never been successful in getting a
good thumb print down even with help. At least I don’t have any credit card
info on my phone. Although I suppose my sister could be charged for any number
of things that people would want to put on my phone if they did have access to
it. But that’s never gonna happen.
I did plug in the most recent password change that I was sure was not for my
Google account and Gmail because it had no punctuation and no capital letters
but apparently if you change it you can do that. Anyway all the notes and
contacts and calendar events and things like that transferred over quite nicely
since all of those things are stored through Gmail not iCloud.
Wow, those Apple accessibility people are unbelievably patient. They deserve a
reward. They are a very special breed of person.

Re: the new iPhone SE 2020

2020-04-28 Thread Richard Turner
The battery in the new SE is identical to the iPhone 8 battery. Both 1821 mAh.
I did not look up the specs on the iPhone 11 battery, but I am sure it is
larger. The 11 and new SE has the same processor, the A13.

Thanks Richard that's some great feedback on the new toy,

I was under the impression that the battery in the SE 2020 is the same as the
one in the 11!

But I could have mis heard that.

If only we could get the 256 GB version here in nz from providers I might be
inclined to purchase one

I will answer in context where I can.
So if so how is the audio on it and how long does the battery last so far?
The audio is excellent. I used it on and off all day Saturday partly doing
final setup etc. and I did not need to charge it until that night.
The same on Sunday and I spent several hours reading with Voice Dream Reader;
but of course the phone was locked during the reading so very little battery

Richard

Hi,

I have both apps here and am glad to do so. I'm all about having alternatives
handy should the need arise. As others have said Cash Reader is a paid app and
handles many a world currency and is updated regularly. It also at least by me
seems to be a bit less dependent on the level of light. I.E. it does better in
less light than EyeNote has done for me. But again I have both and am glad of
it.

I also wanted to mention that I believe Cash Reader has a vibration mode
available for situations when you want privacy or for the benefit of those who
are Deaf Blind.

Stay well and take good care.

You don't have to be subscribed, to any amazon music service.

You just make the purchase, as you would, with anything else.

Just in case you are stil using internet explorer. It is no longer
supported, with amazon music downloads.

I have encountered, en the past, after having done so; some that you
described very eloquently, Richard, and some even more daunting issues, that
continue to occur, with those long ago purchased tracks.

I only purchase music from Amazon, via my web browser, on my Windows PC.

The process is simple, straight-forward, and fast.

For example, when purchasing an album on my PC, the broad strokes are:

1.
Go to Amazon.com and find the album. Select the album to display the
various formats, MP3, CD, Vinyl, etc. Along with each format, you will see
the purchase price.

2.
Select your format.

3.
Purchase the Album.

4.
Select Download purchase. The album will be downloaded to your PC in a Zip
file.

5.
Unzip the file and you will see all of the album titles.

Now here is what I do to get my newly purchased album into iTunes; again the
broad strokes, only.

6.
Open iTunes for Windows.

7.
Add all of the album titles to my iTunes Library, simultaneously.

8.
Select all of the newly purchased album titles and select New Playlist.

9.
Give the Playlist the same name of the Album.

10.
Sync the new playlist to my iOS device.

Again, just the broad strokes but, all things being equal, given that I’ve
been using this method for about 7 years or so, it takes me less than 15
minutes to go from purchase to syncing songs to my iOS device.

Welcome to the tagging hell that is classical music, as well as others, but
classical is the worst.
Since the internal tags of classical music often has different artists on
some tracks, or different conductors, orchestras, etc., it gets crazy
making.

But, look for a folder called Compilations.
Most of the time, these albums are marked as compilations so they will show
up by either the album name, or conductor.
The tracks will also be scattered into different subfolders, but at least in
the compilations folder they should be all together.

Hello Mark
Wow, Thanks for this. Can one just go to amazon and search for the album or
does one have to be subscribed to their music service before one can make

  Mike,

I think whether an SE 2020 can be ordered with a carrier SIM card from the
Apple Store might be a function of the type of plan you have with your carrier.
I have ordered from the Apple Store in the past while I had a Verizon postpaid
plan and received my new iPhone with a Verizon SIM card already installed.
However, I switched to a Verizon prepaid plan in late February and when I tried
ordering my SE 2020 last Saturday using the Apple Store app, I received an
error message when I attempted to complete the order when the app went to
Verizon to verify my account info. I was unable to complete the Apple Store
order unless I selected no carrier as my choice which included no SIM card.
I'll simply move my Verizon SIM card from my iPhone 8 to my SE 2020 after I get
it set up and ready to make calls. As I understand it, this will also avoid any
new device activation charge from Verizon which they tried to charge me when I
went from my iPhone 7 to my iPhone 8.

The SIM card has to be a Nano Sim; if the phone is that very old, it probably
won't fit.

You'd have to call Apple or do some web search on the model you have to find
out the size of the sim.

And you will need to go through your carrier to get the SIM card.

Technically, the SE first generation and second generation take the same

I was told by an Apple staff person that I could set up the new phone with
the old SE SIM, but should then get a new SIM card as the performance will be
much better.

And, the new SE is a Dual SIM phone; as in one physical SIM and one eSIM
just like the 11 and xs/xr phones if your carrier supports the eSIM.

I will answer in context where I can.
So if so how is the audio on it and how long does the battery last so far?
The audio is excellent. I used it on and off all day Saturday partly doing
final setup etc. and I did not need to charge it until that night.
The same on Sunday and I spent several hours reading with Voice Dream
Reader; but of course the phone was locked during the reading so very little
battery used.
But I'd say I used it for over 6 hours actively and plugged it in at almost
10 PM when it was at 20%.

I mean it is know iPhone 11 or 11 pro but is it just as fast as those
phones?

Yes, it has the exact same chip, the A13.

Also does this have stereo speakers as well?
Yes, very nice sounding, clear, stereo. The left track is at the home
button end. I tested last evening with Norwegian Wood by the Beatles which
starts with only music in the right track. Holding it landscaped, the
stereo was very clear. I've decided I like the audio quality better than on
the 8 plus; but sound is extremely subjective so take that with a grain of
salt.

And is the battery in this phone as big as the one in the 10 XR or does it
last longer then the one in the 10 XR?
I have no idea since I never had an XR. You could look up the specs on each
and see.

And I think that this new phone has A home button as well so does it use
touch ID like the 7 and the sixes used to and even the eights?
Yes, and I find the touch ID much faster, but that could be the difference
in the A13 chip.

Also if you use the camera for things like reading bard codes with seeing AI
or for voice dream scanner how well does it work for that as well?

It works great!

If you use someone elses apple ID to purchase an app on your phone then yes you
will need to use their apple id to update / install that app again,

You should be able to skip that app or aps and carry on until you can get your
sister to update the apps for you.

You should never have to enter somebody else's Apple Id and/or password, I have
never seen this before. Didn't you say you were using a new email or had set
up a new Apple Id? You should know that if you can't change the email on your
original Apple Id then all the apps you purchased with that Apple Id will be
lost to you. If you buy 20 apps with a particular Apple Id and then you set up
a new Apple Id and purchase 5 more apps and you use the new Apple Id on your
phone you can only use these 5 apps.

I reached a point in the setting up of my new phone from a phone to phone
transfer where it’s asking me for my sisters Apple password because I’ve made
purchases through family sharing and those Costco on her card. It’s not
accepting the password she gave me. I don’t know if she’s got a new sign in and
doesn’t recall that some of these purchases might’ve been made in an old sign
in or if there’s just something else going on. I called Apple Accessibility,
they told me I should download those apps later after I finish the set up on
the SE phone. Here I was thinking this is it knows I’ve made those other
purchases and it’s trying to streamline the whole process by transferring them
over. Has anyone done this? Some of you must have. Is the information I got
from Apple correct? Will those apps not transfer over until later when I go to
the App Store and ask it to do it? Or is this actually part of a set up process
that will allow me to do it if only I get the correct password.

So if so how is the audio on it and how long does the battery last so far?
The audio is excellent. I used it on and off all day Saturday partly doing
final setup etc. and I did not need to charge it until that night.
The same on Sunday and I spent several hours reading with Voice Dream Reader;
but of course the phone was locked during the reading so very little battery

Yes, it has the exact same chip, the A13.

Also does this have stereo speakers as well?
Yes, very nice sounding, clear, stereo. The left track is at the home button
end. I tested last evening with Norwegian Wood by the Beatles which starts
with only music in the right track. Holding it landscaped, the stereo was very
clear. I've decided I like the audio quality better than on the 8 plus; but

Thanks Richard that's some great feedback on the new toy,

I was under the impression that the battery in the SE 2020 is the same as the
one in the 11!

But I could have mis heard that.

If only we could get the 256 GB version here in nz from providers I might be
inclined to purchase one

Subject: RE: the new iPhone SE 2020

I will answer in context where I can.
So if so how is the audio on it and how long does the battery last so far?
The audio is excellent. I used it on and off all day Saturday partly doing
final setup etc. and I did not need to charge it until that night.
The same on Sunday and I spent several hours reading with Voice Dream Reader;
but of course the phone was locked during the reading so very little battery

Richard

Subject: Using Period at the End of Sentence

Hi Everyone,

I don't know if I may have changed a setting. If I ask Siri to send a text
message, instead of putting the punction mark of a period at the end of a
sentence, it inserts the word period. How do I stop this from happening?

Thank you to everyone.

Stay safe,

Lynda

Re: A message to get rid of

2020-04-28 Thread Dave
Richard is correct. Just double tap on, set up later, and it should go away.

Dave.

I think I double tapped on that message, and when it got to the spot where you
had the option to set up later, double tapped it and I've not seen it again.
