Roomba
Good afternoon everyone. I am curious. Have any of you experience using a Roomba? I recently ordered one from Amazon which has not arrived yet. I am wondering if this is a viable option for someone who is totally blind. How accessible is the app and how difficult is it to set up the app and use it. I know it can be controlled via the a lady. Any feedback appreciated. Thanks and everyone have a wonderful day. Mary Anne Sent from my iPhone -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list. Re: keeping track of which books are on which app
I personally like Goodreads. I have made different shelves for various apps. The default shelf which I do not duplicate is NLS because most of my books are from there. I have shelves for book share, Kindle, hoopla and my local library. So when a note a book as want to read or currently reading ET see, I put it may be on two shelves but since it is already on the default bookshelf, I have to put it in the shelf where all the book actually comes from like Kindle ET see. Of course, that also means that I have books in various apps and I’m now finding that I can easily lose track of where a book is. To be more specific, I have Audible, Kindle, Voice Dream Reader, Christian Audio, Chirp and BARD. I’ve occasionally found that I’ve almost purchased a book in Audible, forgetting that I had already found it on BARD. Or, I download a book someone recommends to me or that I find on sale, then forget which app it’s in. Some of you talk about having hundreds of books on your phone. Anyone found any great ways to keep track of what you have downloaded? I will say that I’m not one to keep a book on my device once I’ve read it. I keep an Excel spreadsheet with books I’ve read and what I thought of them, and recently added a note as to which app I read it on, but this doesn’t help me with books I have yet to read.Just interested if anyone has any great ideas on ways to link everything into one list or something. Hi Teresa. I did get this to work once but am not sure how. I think I tapped the letter that I wanted to see and it became an edit box then hit the peek button. Re: What A Difference A Screen Protector Can Make
Those inexpensive screenprotectors are known to get particles behind them and they can scratch the glass. They also develop moisture condensation. I guess you are referring to your new screen protector as one of those with the tempered glass. Definitely worth it if you can do it. Shop around. I've seen them from 24.99 to 49.99. I just got one at Verizon for I think 24.99. It was the least expensive around. All others were from 39 to 50 bucks. Re: Bingo Crack
When you play, you enter a room, like casino or disco. Other players are also there and you can see how many near the bottom of screen. I like to wait until 50 are there so there is more time and more bingos. Sometimes if a room is not full enough you will get an error message like unable to communicate with server. I think they like to have a specific number of players before starting a game. If I don't see a lot of players in a room, I hit the lobby button at top left to get out so that I'm not stuck playing where there may be only a few winners. I like to see 50 players, even 40 isn't enough for me. Hope this helps. Bingo Crack
Hey folks the people who put out Trivia Crack have a bingo game now. You can read the card with VO. They call the numbers a little fast though. The big problem is that I am not smart enough to memorize card and when I have a bingo, I don't know it. But maybe if we can ask developer for game to make a clue sound when one has bingo, it would be great. Has anyone tried this yet? Re: is the new iOS for iPhones a bit more usable?
Yeah, forget about the stupid watch and get back to business instead of pushing that stupid watch all over the media. You know, I used my iPod 3rd generation the other day to play D W. It is iOS 6, still marvelous. Let's hope that Steve sends down some kick-butt inspiration to these guys to get things to where they used to be. Mary Anne On 2/21/2015 11:48 AM, Sieghard Weitzel wrote: Hi Devin, A number of bugs have been fixed, but there also still are some annoying ones which have been present ever since the first iOS 8 beta release which means they have been reported to Apple now for 9 months and still are not fixed. One of these is the fact that you can't move most apps in the bottom row of the home screen (the one above the dock). I believe there are alsos till issues with Safari and the back button on web pages and a number of issues for braille users. Apple has so far released 5 beta versions of iOS 8.2 and even though 8.2 is not even out yet to the public, iOS 8.3 Beta 1 has been released and 8.3 Beta 2 is expected next week. 8.3 Beta 1 seems to have fixed a few things, but other problems have been introduced so let's ope they get fixed soon. Jonathan has written an excellent article about the just announced iOS public beta program which 9to5Mac has written about and which is expected to start on March 11 with a public beta of iOS 8.3. This means I would expect that iOS 8.2 will be released publically before then, but who knows, maybe iOS 8.2 will never become a public release and Apple will stick with 8.1.3 until the publick release of 8.3. They are definitely doing things differently and in any case, the majority of the new features in the 8.2 beta are about the upcoming Apple Watch. Once again Jonathan has blogged about an article which states that while iOS 9 which will be announced in a little over 3 months during Apple's world wide developer conference will of course have some new features, but focus will be heavily about squashing bugs and on getting iOS to be what it used to be, a platform which is rock solid, secure and which works well without a lot of bugs. I think we do have good things to look forward to this year and quite a few Voiceover users will most likely manage to be part of that group of 100,000 people who will get access to the iOS 8.3 and later iOS 9 public beta. Yes, I know people have already asked how they can register for that, but I think we just have to wait until Apple announces this officially and those who do want to participate better be on the ball since I doubt that once Apple does take registrations it will take long for the 100,000 spots to be filled. It would actually be nice if Apple set aside 1% or so of these spots specifically for Voiceover users maybe by registration via Apple Accessibility, but I doubt that will happen and we will just have to compete with everybody else.. Re: Fwd: [New post] ‘Shockingly bad’ Google Android 5.0 Lollipop update bricks phones, tablets; kills apps
I have never found that the Droid system has been easy to use from playing with my brother's phone. In fact, I have found it to be clumbsy and awkward to navigate. Having stated that, I've not really learned how to use it either and am just starting to do some homework on it now. I am hoping that things improve before the time comes for me to decide. I think the problem here is that Apple had raised the bar so high that we are all upset and disappointed when things fall apart, as we should be. And yes, I still think Steve J is a huge loss and even if the system was not good to start with, it became far superior to anything out there on his watch. In fact, my very first computer that I could use with good functionality way back in the early 80's was the Apple IIe or IIc, can't remember which. That was before MS really had much out there that was accessible and if IBM did, it was very costly. So I think the apple founders truly did have accessibility as a priority from the start. I do think that one person can make a big difference in what a company does, its policies and its priorities, especially if the person happen to be in Mr. J's position. That's my take on the Steve J issue, a huge loss and too young. This new person in charge needs to step up to the plate, fix what is broken and quit tinkering with that stupid watch. Way to expensive a device to be playing games like this with those of us who have accessibility needs. I think they are telling us to bite the dust. I have until the summer before I can do anything so we will see. I hope Steve comes to haunt them all big time because this would never happen with him in charge. What a terrible loss that was for us. I honestly haven't seen any big improvements in the IOS. Still have no caller ID and only half cooked notifications. And having the apps helter-skelter all over the place and not being able to organize them is really irritating. And Face Book is still behaving inconsistently too. I'll stop there. I really feel sorry for anyone who spent money recently on a new iPhone. At least mine worked well for more than a year until they shattered accessibility in iOS8 thus far. Sorry this is a gripe post but I'm very frustrated. Mary Anne On 11/18/2014 12:55 PM, Jessica Dail wrote: Yes. Re: can't move apps around the home screen
No, that ability to move apps got broke with iOS *. Used to work great and could move any app from anywhere. Now, I might be able to move one app, then it jus tstops working and I can't move any more apps. Another huge anoying bug. It seems to me that part of the problem lies in the fact that sometimes apps are almost on top of each other and not correctly aligned, maybe because we've tried to put too many apps on a page. Re: Dice World
If you don't want to use bonus points, uncheck the bonus option in your settings as defalt and don't accept invites from those who are doing bonus. If you invite using no bonus, the other player can't use bonus points at all as it is a no bonus game. Furthermore, if you put yourself in the game queue, you can check the box as to whether you want a bonus game or not. I have my defalt as no bonus but if I want a bonus game, I just check the box for bonus game in the create game screen. You get 1 point every time you win and if you allow your wint to tweet or go to face book, you get two additional points per game. I actually don't see anything unfair about it. I believe it is one of the best systems i've seen for a dice game. It is easy to build up points until you want to use them. And you choose whether the game should use them or not. All games allow one bonus per turn if you have full control over the bonus option. Re: wi-fi cutting out on 6+
I have I5 iPhone % and have been losing wireless since upgrade to IoS 8. It is terrible. I must keep my cellular turned off or it will use my data. Have to go to settings and turn wifi off and on again. Sometimes that won't even work. I have to restart the phone before it works. I have noticed lots of buffering too. There are androids in the house without this problem. There are numerous problems with Ios *8.1 and I am frankly becoming fed up with the whole thing. I can't move apps around consistently, if at all. They are scattered everywhere and I can't put them into folders for any organization. I get very few call announcements. Many apps that used to work just fine are now broken. When is Apple going to get their act together and fix these problems? Are they dumping their commitment to accessibility with the new regime or what? Too busy working on stupid gadgets like that idiotic watch instead of fixing all the broken parts in Ios8. I for one will start learning to use my brother's android if this keeps up. I really like what Apple used to be but am becoming very disillusioned since they are taking so long to respond to these issues. Iphone cost a serious amount of money to have become so dysfunctional. And I know many of my sighted friends and coworkers who do not like this new iOs 8, so there are many more issues than an accessibility going on here. Let's hope they do something about this very soon. In summary, those of you who are having wifi issues are not imagining it. It's for real! It's not your router or your iPhone, or your carrier, it's the half-fast operating system. WIFI with new OS
I have noticed that my Iphone 5 keeps droping the WIFI and found myself with an overage this month because it kept reverting to cellular. I have never had an overage before. I turned off the cellular and it still drops the WIFI. I go to settings and can't find my network. I turn the phone off and on again, and all is well for awhile. Then it will lose th enetwork and need to reboot so it can find it again. Has anyone else noticed this since iOS 8? Thanks. Re: WIFI with new OS
Rich, thanks. That makes a lot of sense and is a much easier fix. I did not want the new OS and somebody in my family got their hands on my phone and thought they were doing me a favor and just downloaded it. Think they wrecked my iPad too. Gees, they ask about everything else but not that. I have done some research and understand one can no longer revert. Is that true? I would really like to go back to 7 as I am not a happy camper right now. Thanks for your help. Mary Anne On 10/25/2014 3:59 PM, Richard Turner wrote: Yes, and it is there in 8.1. Maybe check the volume in your settings. I had an issue where I wasn't hearing some things on the iPhone and I had to turn the volume slider up and it was okay. Dice Buddies
Good morning everybody. While I think Dice World is definitely the best dice game out there for me, I've been playing with Dice Buddies and am wondering if anyone else has tried this. It's pretty accessible but you don't get hints of what is available. You have to look and physically scan with your finger to see what needs to be done. And bonuses are hard to find, and not as numerous. My question is the scratchies. They come up at times, don't know how or why, but I don't think there is anyway for a blind person to work at them.I get somebody sighted to do it. It is like playing a lottery ticket where you scrach off and look for matching prize. Has anyone figured out this one? Thanks. Re: Dice World Question
Hi again. I do have another question. I believe as it stands now, there is no way to do this. How can I get my oldest games to come up first? I have many games, so addicted that I'm ashamed to admit how many, and I sometimes only have a few minutes. Would you ask the developer to make it possible to have the games sort by oldest at top of list? By the way, I paid for the game and find it a good policy to do so when a developer does such great things to make it accessible. If I can, I will pay for good software. I know many can't, and I'm not criticizing any one or bragging because I know that eeryone does what they can, especially in these days when cash is very sparse at times! But I would urge that anyone who can do so try to contribute to those who really sttrive to make software accessible. Keep 'em Coming, Scott!
Hi Scott. I very much appreciate knowing which apps are available and where to find them. I don't have the time or inclination to search for apps I want that may or may not be there, so I like it when folks put links to apps. If the app does not interest me, I just delete the message and move on. Nothing hard about that. However, I have to admit that my index finger gets very tired from deleting messages from whiners and ingrates who should consider that many people are new and, like me, others don't have time to do endless searching. Come on people, knowledge is good, look at the positive impact instead of what may be unjustly perceived as quote what's in it for them unquote. Anyway, many of these apps are free. I, for one, have made many fun and beneficial discoveries by those of you who take the time and trouble to post the links and info about these apps. I am all for it and see it as all about what the group is meant to do. Thank you to those who post this info. I hope I will be able to return the favor someday by finding a new app for somebody who never knew it existed. Thanks again to all of you who spend the time and effort to help someone discover new possibilities. Re: Moderator warning about letting emotions run away from you
I don't have any desire to get something for nothing. I have worked since I was a teenager and know very well that you get what you pay for. I own my own business and completely understand that you need to make money. We all do. I never asked for a free product. All I want is a reasonable price. It's not emotions, it's my opinion that the price is excessive. I know about in app purchases, but seeing a registration screen that wants you to pay so much right away with out even a trial leaves a bad taste in my mouth. As for writing a review before purchasing, if the price drives one away from purchasing, I think I have a right to let the developers know of this so that may be they will think of a more suitable plan. I have expressed my views on this and this is the last I will write concerning the subject. I thank the list mods for allowing me to speak my piece, which is financially motivated, not emotionally driven. If I am considered a monster for expressing my opinion, so be it. Re: The Seeing Eye app, greed, greed, greed!
I think it's a disgrace and a total rip off. Not even a trial? Even so, it's too expensive and nothing but outright greediness. I've already written this as a rating for the app, adding that it's nothing less than a case of total greed, greed, greed, taking advantage of blind people and stealing money out of their pockets. Sixty-nine bucks a year, that is outrageous! What a cocky attitude for Sendero to adopt. who do they think they are anyway? Hi all, I took the Seeing Eye GPS app for a quick walk around my neighborhood to see how well it performed. I walked about one mile, and took a different route back. It worked well, although like most GPS apps it seemed to use a lot of battery, over twenty percent in the one mile walk. The interface of the app is simple and easy to understand. Entering an address is made easy because the state and city you are in are already entered, so only the address number and street need to be entered. If you are going to another city, however, you will need to change that field. I started by searching for a point of intrest and starting a route. The app uses voice over for most of the announcements, but does have another voice that chimes in occasionally. The directions were clear and given with ample lead time. As I approached intersections it would announce the street name and the intersection type, I. E. Fore way, and the street direction. Also, as I walked the app announced points of intrest as I passed by. On the way back, I tried the route to home option, which opened a drop down menu with various options including one that is poorly labeled. My wife told me it said multi modal, which voice over didn't understand, so I relabeled this button multi mode. Over all I think this is a great start, but there are a few things I'd like to see in the future. I'd like to see the ability to walk a virtual route, as I was able to do with my human ware Trekker.. After taxes the one year subscription cost over seventy five dollars. It sounds like a lot, but considering my old Trekker was fifteen hundred dollars seven years ago, it doesn't seem too expensive. If you figure it out, it comes to about twenty one cents a day for the one year subscription. And only about thirteen cents a day with the three year subscription, it seems reasonable to me. Re: The Seeing Eye app, greed, greed, greed!
You are incorrect assuming that I bought a subscription. I downloaded the app and when I found out how outrageous and costly it was, i certainly did not buy a subscription. I immediately went to the rating portion and told them how I feel. The app has been deleted from my phone. By the way, the apps you refer to are a one time fee. I've had my Navigon for 2 years and have only paid the cost of the app. I works just fine. A few bucks every now and then to upgrade the maps is reasonable, but certainly the price they want for a yearly sub is highway robbery. I just don't have that kind of money anyway, they wouldn't get it if I did and there are other good alternatives. Actually, I'll stay with my Breeze and support a company that is not blatantly greedy. I'm glad you find the app to be a good one because I would hate for someone to spend that kind of money and not like it. It's not like Sendero forced you to do so. You could go and pay $59 for Navigon North America, then $15 or whatever it is for BlindSquare for a total of $75 and have a workable solution even though it wouldn't be as good as the Seeing Eye app. This totally reminds me about the uproar some people felt when Sendero dared to charge $5 for their LookAround app a few years ago, the outrage some people felt then I think was downright ridiculous and while $70 is more than $5, like I said, don't buy it if you don't want it. Hockey games, please!
Hi everybody. My brother is hockey-starved and is having terrible with drawal symptoms! Can any of our Canadian friends recommend where he can get a fix? A TV station recommendation would be wonderful, but any station, radio, TV, whatever, any league, anywhere that carries hockey games in Canada or in the world would be appreciated. He has an iPhone and iPad. Any apps or anything! I am having trouble dealing with the long face, blum mood, etc. etc. etc. Hockey lovers, please help! You may also drop a line to Dan at hockeylover...@gmail.com Thank you all very much. Mary Anne -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Wifi issues continue
believe it is hardware problem with 4S. Have Ipod with same OS, Ipad, several computers on Windows. My brother has now just started having same problem with 4S, different carrier too. It will get so bad that you can't see any WIFI networds anywhere. All other devices never lose the WIFI. I thought it was my imagination at first, but finally it deteriorated to the point where it would not see any WIFI. This occurred over a several week period of time. Re: Wifi issues continue
Yep, tried everything including wiping phone clean. It would work when I first turned it on but as soon as phone went to sleep, lost WIFI when I went to use it. Apple store did same thing with same result which is why I hung around the store for about 10 minutes after they put the phone through diagnostics. They saw it happen and gave me another phone. I've read a few articles about one of the chips being defective in a lot of the 4S phones and it causes this WIFI thing to happen. Only cure appears to be a different phone. And hope it doesn't happen on this one. I got the 2 year maintenance to get me through until I can go for a new phone with my carrier which will be just in time.
