Which iPhone App Allows The Creation Of level 1 2 and so on of Headings that is accessible with VoiceOver?

2024-05-18 Thread Ron Canazzi

Hi Group,

I want to make a document as part of a game I am creating that will
quickly allow me to access aspects of the game via a document using
header navigation. I tried using Microsoft Word for PC and moving it to
the iPhone but the header navigation seemed broken. Only a few words
would appear on each line which Ms Word had created a heading.

Which app on the iPhone itself would be used to create various levels of
headings that would be accessible with VoiceOver?

Hi Gerardo,

Why don't you try the 'free' Bookshare app itself? It is limited to only
Bookshare books, but works fine in and of itself for that task.

Beware of IOS Automatic Updates And Cellular/WiFi Settings

2024-04-01 Thread Ron Canazzi

Hi Group,

On two of my iPhones, with the update a few weeks ago to IOS 17.4, after the
reboot after installing, apparently, both iPhones had changed my setting from
cellular data/off to cellular data/on.  I have a 1 GB     data limit. I did not
notice that this had happened until I got a warning that I had already exceeded
my data limit for both devices.  This will cost me an additional $19.95 this
month. This has never happened before. So just be careful and check major
settings such as ones that could cost you money after you update the operating
system.

Re: Making everyone pay for voice dream

2024-03-26 Thread Ron Canazzi

Hi Group,

I  would be willing to pay up to twenty dollars yearly, but this is
ridiculous. I could afford it, but it is still way too high for an app
on an Apple device. As mentioned before, the average price of most apps
usable with IOS devices is between five and ten dollars US.  Allowing
for the smaller market, I could easily pay double yearly, but not sextuplet!

Just received a message voice dream is going to cost 59 dollars a year now. A
pet peeve of mine is everything requires a subscription. I see nothing in there
reasons for this that affects me. So, nice I had it for so long. It was a
wonderful app, but I am done with it. As with MBraille I was one of the first
to buy it for I think 5 dollars. Makes me want to cry to lose it, but much more
important places to put my money. On Social Security with a guide dog and so
guess it goes away. Still want to cry after all the books from Bookshare it has
read to me.

The Book Share program itself now has its own app. It is free and while

So I opened up the app again and got the banner at the bottom of the

got my money’s worth and then some for this app if this is the case.

I believe BookPlayer also has an in-app payment option for cloud

For some folks, the 60 bucks for VDR might even be worth it as you can
use just one app for both eBooks and audiobooks. Everyone knows their

Re: Saving Voice Mail Messages Question Please.

2024-03-24 Thread Ron Canazzi

Hi Janet,

You may not be asking for the audio, but I regularly save audio versions
of my voice mails that are left on my Spectrum Phone account.
I am able to look under voice mail under the iPhone app and see a copy
of the message. If I swipe up once, I get a menu one item of which is
share. If I share, one of the options is to send it to voice memos. When
I do this, I can see the voice memo in audio format listed in the voice
memo app with a hexadecimal type title (series of numbers and letters.)
I can then edit the name by double tapping on the name field and
deleting the default and replacing it with something recognizable.

Issue With Zoom and iPhone

2024-03-20 Thread Ron Canazzi

Hi Group,

In March of 2023, Zoom had a major update that made usage of the program
more problematic with the iPhone app for Zoom.  Since then, there have
been some improvements to accessibility, but I still have one issue.

I am not quite sure what happens, but one of the things that recent Zoom
updates have fixed to a degree is the area of the screen that when
focused announces the name/avatar of the person speaking and in focus.
this has been  restored to a degree, but I find that when I move down
the screen past a certain point, then I can no longer refocus on the
part of the screen--usually one swipe below the top--where the person
speaking and in focus is announced.

Has anyone else using Zoom with the iPhone noticed this and is there any
way to regaining that information after it is lost by navigating below
the pane that announces the person?

Audio Issue With iPhone SE 2020

2024-03-08 Thread Ron Canazzi

Hi Group,

I believe this may have started with the upgrade to IOS 17.3, but I am not
sure. For the past month or so, the audio on my SE 2020 iPhone seems somewhat
muted. This is despite the fact that I have the audio under settings set at 100
percent.

Is there any generic adjustments I could make to get the audio to match my SE
2022 iPhone? Could there be a mechanical reason such as a speaker issue? If so
can you clean the speaker in any safe and effective way?

Any hehlp would be greatly appreciated.

The Onscreen Keyboard Issue

2024-01-27 Thread Ron Canazzi

Hi Candy,

Using the Freedom Scientific Focus 40 Blue U Braille display, there is a
hot key that if the on screen keyboard does not show up you can press to
make it show up.  The unit must be connected when you do this. The hot
key is a Q chord on the display.  I do not know if this works for all
Braille displays.

SiriusXM APP and Sports Rewind

2024-01-06 Thread Ron Canazzi

Hi Group,

Well the issue of what SiriuisXM has done to it's IOS app has been discussed
for a while now on this and other lists. I have slowly begun to adjust to a
degree to it's cumbersome and less accessible interface. I listen to this app
primarily for sports events. In the older app, I used to like to rewind games
after their completion and listen to the play by play. In particular, during
the Super Bowls, I would listen to and record one home town play by play and
then immediately upon completion, I would switch to the other team's home play
by play and wind back 4 hours to play and record the other play by play
broadcast.

I do not see any way using the new app to do this. I know there must be some
way, because on one of my three IOS devices, I still have the older app and I
have disabled the updates for that device. I can still rewind using the 'back
one hour' button and I can do it up to four hours and then replay. This was
always the case for four years until the December 14, 2023 update of the app.
In addition, while the StarplayrX app is much easier to use and works
great--even with the main app update, I do not see any way of rewinding four
hours on that very accessible app.

has anyone else been able to figure out how to do this on the new app? Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: keyboard disappearing issue on Iphone. Help needed.

2023-12-31 Thread Ron Canazzi

Hi Group,

I also have this issue using the Focus 40 Blue Braille Keyboard. I guess
it has something to do with the bluetooth grabbing access to the iPhone

space bar)

Hey all,

I've been having this weird issue for a while now, whereby Iphone's
keyboard randomly vanishes. sometimes it's there, and sometimes not.
It happens on any app, and I can't figure out what causes this or how
to fix it. Sometimes double-tapping and holding on a text field
brings it back, but not always. Any help would be much appreciated.

thanks in advanced, and tc all!

Re: Sirius app update improvements and observations

2023-12-22 Thread Ron Canazzi

Hi Wayne,

I downloaded the update today and I am still confused. I am having a
great difficulty getting to the NFL play by play area. I keep getting
the last station played player open without playing and I cannot get rid
of it, even if I close the app and restart it.

screen. I also found headings on screens for channels I would like to
listen to. Granted, I haven’t explored all parts of the app, and it
will take some experimenting but this was a welcome surprise.
Especially when so many people, including me, were upset with the
recent major update which changed a lot of things and brought many
unlabeled buttons. Sirius is my main source for NFL games, and I like
their weekly countdown shows on the 80’s and 90’s channels. I wish
they gave us more of a traditional means of organizing favorites with
the edit/done buttons and being able to reorder favorites with rodor
actions. Oh well. Hopefully the app will continue to improve. There
are a lot of things I really like about the main Sirius/XM app which
one does not get from the more simplified StarPlayerX app.

Hi Group,

I had closed the StarplayrX down overnight 12/15/2023 and then tried
opening it for the football games around 12:30 PM 12/16/2023 EST.  I got
the log in error once. I was presented with a log in screen. I typed in
my password again and the app has been working since then with the app
closed and reopened a few times. I wonder if this is going to be a

I do not see an e-mail link on the page.

My Analysis Of the SiriusXM and StarplayrX Apps

2023-12-14 Thread Ron Canazzi

Hi Group,

I sent this one to another list, but that is a more general tech list
and not an Apple list.

Hi Group,

I also got the error with the StarplayrX app. It says 'error logging in;
your IP address has been blocked for 24 hours because of too many log-in
errors.'  This is odd because I can still log in with my SiriusXM App
and can connect without any issues.

As concerns the SiriusXM app itself, it is a definite decline in
accessibility. I can get to many areas, but the app is much more
graphical and has a huge amount of clutter that VoiceOver just doesn't
handle properly. When I wanted to go to the NFL portion of sports, it
took me five minutes to do this. Now maybe I'll get used to it and it
will take less time over the next weeks and months, but it is bad in
several ways. I am not sure, but I think that the screens are like a
roller item because once I am on a particular page, I never seem to
reach the tabs at the bottom. I see the various tabs, but I used to do a
three finger swipe a few times and get to the bottom where the tabs were
located or I could move slowly with one finger over the screen until I
reach an area near the bottom and I would see the tabs. It is as if the
tabs are moving or in the middle of the page or something I am not sure
of.  Using the three finger swipe up and down to turn pages is now
essential, but it is never as accurate as using the single finger
left/right to move item by item.  More and more apps seem to be
switching to this method and display more information per screen but
give you less movement with screen reader commands.  Spectrum TV app
changed to that kind of interface in September and I am finally getting
somewhat use to it. It is still much more difficult and less accurate to
get to a particular station than it used to be.

I have reported this via the settings/feedback to both the SiriusXM App
and the StarplayrX app developers and hopefully (I doubt it) they may be
able to restore some accessibility.  Yes, the items generally speaking
do read and identify, so given enough time, I can find things.

When I first logged onto the SiriusXM app, it asked me to enable Siri
for the app. I thought this might enable me to give a command such as:
Siri, open the NFL portion of the SiriusXM app' but this does not work.
I wonder what you can do with the SiriusXM app and Siri.

Re: SiriusXM To Update Service And App: How Will This Affect Accessibility?

2023-12-08 Thread Ron Canazzi

Hi Group,
Hi Group,

Here is a bit of an update on this thread I started last week.  I have
downloaded the app that is a kind of substitute interface for SiriusXM
called starplayrx note the spelling when you search for it on the app
store.  It is a simpler interface with SiriusXM. It is not free and
costs $4.99 a one time purchase. It is somewhat limited in that it does
not give access to podcasts or something I am not sure of called XTRA
channels.  But you can get all the music, sports, talk, news and so on
channels you want.  You log in to set up the app using your SiriusXM
user name and password and you are good to go.

If siriusXm app updates break accessibility starplayrx is a good
alternative--assuming that this alternative interface does not somehow
get broken by the changes.

to the app with major revisions.

Whenever I hear about exciting new revisions to apps, I cringe. They
did this to the NFL app a few years ago and ruined it for
accessibility and they broke elements of the Zoom app for iPhone
earlier this year.  Has anyone got a heads up on the new SiriusXM app
and whether or not it is as accessible as the current version?

Re: xm radio app

2023-11-14 Thread Ron Canazzi

Hi Richard,

I use the SiriusXM app and at this point, I have no problems with it. One
always looks for alternatives because some programmers just can't wait to
change the appearance to make it look more appealing and often times break
accessibility. Take the NHL app for listening to hockey games which was totally
accessible until this season as well as the NFL app that was accessible until
2020. (I am out another hundred bukcs US funds--since NFL support assured me
that this year would be different and it wasn't)

My question is: if I use this 'Starplyer' app, could I access my
SiriusXM 'Platinum' account?

I use the SiriusXM app and at this point, I have no problems with it. One
always looks for alternatives because some programers just can't wait to change
the appearance to make it look more appealing and often times break

accessible until this season as well as the NFL app that waqs accessible until
2020. (I am out another hundred bukcs US funds--since they assued me that this

Re: Siri continues to be the dumbest of all dumb assistance.

2023-10-25 Thread Ron Canazzi

Hi Group,

I guess it depends on what you are using these automated helpers for. I
find Siri better than Alexa or Curtana for general knowledge.  As far as
opening apps, I do that myself. Early on when I first began using the
iPhone, I learned to edit my home screen, group various apps by category
into folders and so on. Even when using the contacts listing in
e-mails,  text or phone calls, I add all regularly used addresses to the
contacts list and the only time I ever use Siri to make calls/texts is
if the addressee is not in my contacts list.  Siri never misses when I
ask her call (998) 555-.

I almost never ask Siri to be involved at all in apps.

I just upgraded to iOS 17.1. I’m grateful for the post about the language
rotor, which was unnecessarily unchecked. But now, Siri is even dumber than
before. When I ask her to open Pedometer, it asks which app Pedometer or
StepUp. I clearly said Pedometer. So why does it need to ask that? Further,
when I reply to it stupid question which app by saying Pedometer, it says uh-oh
there’s a problem. The app is there, and if I find it on my phone I can open
it. Really Apple, you are really behind the eight ball here. My Samsung device
opens stuff just fine with the much-maligned Bixby. Siri, worthless. Apple
really has fallen way behind the curve and this has nothing to do with AI. Get
your stuff together Apple.

Hi Group,

I am still having issues with the onscreen keyboard being suppressed in
some fashion when it interacts with the Focus 40 blue latest edition
Braille keyboard. I do get some positive results when I press the Q
chord, but then if I turn off Quick Nav, I an still getting issues if I
turn off the Display.  My only sure way for this not to happen is to
keep the Braille display on and then the keyboard will show up.

Hi Ron

I've had that problem too. What you need to do, is put your cursor in the text
area like usual. Then, while keeping your finger in that area, turn voice over
off then with your finger, do a long press, hopefully when you then turn voice
over back on, your keyboard should be there.

For years now, when using the iPhone, when I double tap an edit field, I get

is this a bug introduced recently in the latest IOS update? How can I make the

Hi Group,

Since this editorial involves primarily Safari browser and since there

anyone tried Firefox on a Mac or perhaps any other browser?

Maybe that is because I have been using Jaws at first with DOS in 1989
and since the mid 90’s with Windows, but I can’t even imagine what
such a bug would do to me now when my retail business runs on a
web-based point of fsale and accounting platform and I virtually use
Chrome (or sometimes Edge) along with Excel and Outlook literally all
day long.

Of course I don’t claim that Windows 11 with the latest version of a
Chromium-based web browser or Firefox and Jaws 2023 and for a while
now Jaws 2024 in Beta is perfect, but it’s very rare that Windows,
Chrome or Jaws crashes when I use our point of sale, Lightspeed Retail
and I often go the entire week without having to reboot my computer.
On Saturday evenings we usually turn all the computers at my store off

Hello Everyone,

Here is an interesting article I just thought some of you might like

We Deserve Better from Apple: Why I Can No Longer Recommend a Mac to
  Fellow Blind Computer Users

As many of you will know from personal experience, there is a
longstanding issue with VoiceOver on Mac where Safari will frequently
become unresponsive with VoiceOver repeatedly announcing the message
“Safari not responding.” When this issue occurs, the user's Mac may
become unusable for up to several minutes at a time. Sometimes it can
be resolved by switching away from Safari. Sometimes restarting
VoiceOver can resolve the issue. However, far too often, the user is
unable to switch away from Safari or turn VoiceOver off, instead
having to simply wait for their Mac to become responsive again.

This “Safari not responding” behaviour when using VoiceOver
dramatically impacts productivity and overall usability of Macs for
blind and low vision users. Furthermore, it appears that the issue
extends beyond just Safari - many other common applications that
utilise Apple's WebKit browser engine can also be affected by the “not
responding” problem.

It is also important to point out this issue occurs regardless of the
specification level of the Mac - it has been widely experienced on the
latest Apple silicon-equipped Macs with 16GB or more of RAM, so even
owners of top-tier new Mac hardware still face this crippling
VoiceOver bug.

This critical problem has persisted for years across multiple MacOS
versions without a permanent fix from Apple. Given the longevity and
level of disruption caused by this bug across Safari and other
applications, I can unfortunately no longer in good faith recommend
Macs to anyone who relies on using VoiceOver. The impact of this bug
when performing routine, and often critical, tasks in Safari and other
applications simply makes macOS an unreliable and frustrating platform.

Macs have traditionally been popular within the blind community, and
they offer some great accessibility features. However, frankly, Apple
should be utterly ashamed that they have let this issue persist for so
long without a permanent fix. It's a failing that raises serious
questions about the company's frequently stated commitment to
accessibility. There can be no doubt that if sighted users were to
experience something similar, that it would receive significant media
coverage and that Apple's response would be fast.

I believe we need to escalate out urging of Apple to prioritise and
permanently solve the “Safari not responding” bug that has plagued
VoiceOver users for far too long. To this end, I encourage those of
you who use VoiceOver on Mac to directly contact Apple's accessibility
team at accessibil...@apple.com to
share your own personal experiences with and frustrations about the
“Safari not responding” issue. It is important we continue putting
direct, polite pressure on Apple to prioritise resolving this problem.
Please be constructive in expressing your concerns. Consider also
copying Apple CEO Tim Cook on your email by using his publicly shared
email address tc...@apple.com to ensure he

Clumsy Work Around For Broken Spectrum TV App

2023-09-23 Thread Ron Canazzi

Hi Group,

After four days of groaning, carping and gnashing of teeth, I played
with the Spectrum TV App for the iPhone and figured out a clumsy but
usable work around for accessing channels.  Here's how it works.

1.  Launch the app and move to the bottom of the screen and double tap
on the home tab.
2.  Near the top is the search field.  double Tap on the search edit
field and the field will open.
3.  Either using the keyboard or the dictation (I use dictation and if I
speak slowly, it usually works quite well) and enter a search term.
4.  Now usually you can go to the top of the screen again and see the
list of results. You can also tap the search button in the lower right
hand corner of the screen and then go to the top and see the results.

5.  One of the results will be your desired channel.
6.  If you tap on the desired result, you are not taken immediately to
Live TV, but you are given a list of options for the channel. Choose
watch in app and double tap that item.  The station will now start
playing live.

Note: you must keep your searches limited to very basic input.  For
example, when I searched on WKBW Channel 7 which is my local ABC
affiliate, I got a zero results return.  If I just searched on ABC, I
got a bunch of results one of which was my local
ABC affiliate.  Now the next time you want to switch channels, you will
see the recent search results in the screen before you enter anything.
You can use the recent search results to more quickly access your most
watched channels--kind of like a crippled version of favorites.

This is clumsy, but at least a usable method until full accessibility is
restored.

Re: Issue With Spectrum Mobile App Accessibility

2023-09-21 Thread Ron Canazzi

Hi Michael,

I have two questions for you about the Spectrum TV app.

1.  Have you used it since Monday?
2.  Did you reboot the iPhone or did you close the Spectrum TV app and
then restart it?

When I did that, that's when the problem started. I had the app on my SE
2020 iPhone and I had to shut it down and restart it for some reason.
When I restarted it, the app updated and I had the problem.

I then launched it on the iPhone SE 2022. It seemed OK. But then I shut
down the SE 2022 and when I restarted it, the app had updated and I had
the problem. If I had thought about it, i wouldn't have shut down and
restarted the SE 2022 and it may still work.

So Michael, if you dare, then close out of the app and restart your
phone and see if it updates and if you have the probloem.

Hi Group,

The Spectrum mobile app (no spec connect or my spectrum in the title)
is the one I am talking about. That used to access TV channels that
you had as part of your account subscription. It has and still does
not have anything to do with the account proper. It does have a link

you double tap that button. But the classic accessibility of the

Hi Group,

i got my first iPhone in March of 2019. I installed the Spectrum
Mobile App for iPhone in June of 2019. The app worked perfectly
and was totally accessible until yesterday. The app updated and
now I have difficulty navigating the interface. The app opens with
a group of new filters, but setting and navigating this screen is
almost impossible. Gone are the simple 'all channels' and 'simple
Favorites' navigation screen when a single swipe right or left
moved you up and down the screen from channel to channel and a
simple double tap launched the selected channel.

Has anyone else noticed this or am i missing something as far as
adjustments or is this the new order of things with respect to the
app? If so, and if people want to keep using the app, I suggest
you give feedback through the developer website or the feed back
link within the app settings.

2023-09-19 Thread Ron Canazzi

Hi Debbie,

I am using both an iPhone SE 2020 (no SIM for home use/app usage such as
SiriuxXM, Spectrum Mobile, TuneIn ETC.) and also an SE 2022 which has
the same apps and a SIM card for phone calls. (I love those home keys.)

HI Ron,

I noticed this problem a few weeks ago and called Spectrum Accessibility and
they had no idea. WE had just gotten a new modem and they thought that there
was a problem so sent someone out. They did fix a problem but this had nothing
to do with the app. The supervisor in dispatch had an iPhone 14 and turned on
Voiceover and I heard the usual tabs that I used to get such as guide. You no
longer have the guide tab, however, I'm using an iPhone 8.

I did leave feedback in the form in the app settings about this but don't
expect much. We ultimately got rid of the TV part of our plan anyway since the
price was just getting ridiculous! So, I'm wondering if you have a newer phone
if these problems aren't happening?

I did kind of find a workaround; I swiped with 3 fingers from page to page like
I used to do in the guide and at least was able to find some more channels but
this is not acceptable. The filters didn't seem to work for me even though I
had them set for all channels and in numerical order.

What a mess!

Re: navigating my Iphone with my braille display

2023-08-27 Thread Ron Canazzi

Hi Group,

I just purchased a focus 40 braille display. I am very new at it. I have
read the manual but am a bit confused. Some of the keystrokes they
mentioned don't work with the display when it is connected to the
iPhone. Are there a separate set of keystrokes for the display when
using it with the iPhone?

In any case, I got into a situation where the configuration menu should
launch with the press of the menu key, but it does not.  I tried the
various lock/unlock keystrokes and they don't seem to unlock anything.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a fairly complete list of braille commands on my website at work with
most displays.
The one you want in particular is space with the letter, O to go on one page to
the right and space with the contraction OW to go one page to the left.

favorite has a button.  Double tap the one you want and you get options:

Allow notifications, on or off, obviously you want on.

Then a heading labeled, Weatherology Alerts.

They are:

Extreme Cold

Extreme Heat

Flodding

Rainfall

Severe Weather

Snowfall

Sporting Event

Tropical

Then a heading for National Weather Service NWS alerts

Advisory

Severe Weather

That's it.

After toggling on or off the ones you want, be sure to double tap the

Then, there may be a couple back buttons and when on the settings main

Thanks to Dennis Long for recommending this app.

I have added its details to my web site.  I'm copying what I put
on my site below which includes the link to the app store.

I had tried this app some years ago. They have been udpating it,
and now it works well with VoiceOver, at least for the forecast

details instead of the simple forecast, it doesn't say selected,
but it is. That should be fixed in the next update. Their customer
support is excellent!

NFL App Accessibility

2023-07-26 Thread Ron Canazzi

Hi Group,

Since someone else on list mentioned NFL alerts, I am wondering if
anyone has tried the NFL app and if it is still largely inaccessible
when it comes to accessing radio feeds.

A little history: I used the NFL App for radio feeds from back in 2005
to 2020. It was largely accessible if a bit clumsy, but once you learned
how to use it and what to expect, you could access the radio feeds as
well as the archives of the radio feeds back to 2004.

In the Fall of 2020, they changed something. They put some sort of
overlay on the tab that contained the radio feed link/buttons.  This
made them invisible to VoiceOver.  I tried contacting the NFL
accessibility phone (which did not work in 2020-2022) and also the
e-mail--which I finally got a response from after literally 2 years of
attempts.  The response was less than impressive stating the NFL's
commitment to accessibility. I even contacted the NFL app developer via
the app store and got no response. I also called the NFL headquarters
and was able to get as far as the voice mail of the digital product
production manager. I left a detailed message and got no response.

In any case, has anyone tried it this year? I have the app on my iPhone
that has been recently auto-updated, but I am not subscribed this
year--fearing that I might have to try to get a refund as I did in 2021
via a threatened suit with Pay Pal.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Maria,

Are you actually activating the closed captioning for the hearing
impaired? If so, that would explain this.

With my MLB app here in the Buffalo, New York area, I get local
commercials somehow instead of the NYC commercials.  I am wondering if
you are running a VPN? I wondered what might happen if you ran a VPN
with these ever more targeted methods of IP sniffing and targeting of
local adds. I wonder if you went too far with this would the streams not
play.

do miss the announcer and the crowd.  Anyway, with a game in progress,
I ask Siri for the score, swipe around till I find a play by play

another play by play button, and when I double tap on it, I get a

This is a simple analog thermometer that does not connect to WiFi or echo or

button and a clear female voice announces the temperature. At last report, it
costs about $40 US.

Re: Can I change my Zoom name on my iPad mini?

2023-06-21 Thread Ron Canazzi

Hi Group,

As long as we're talking about Zoom on this list/thread, at the risk of
somewhat hijacking the actual topic, but I am desperate so here goes: I
sent a message a few weeks ago to this and another Apple list about the
Zoom program update in March of 2023 wherein since then I cannot tell
who is speaking after a change in speaker.  I was wondering since I did
not get any response on either list that maybe no one uses Zoom on the
iPhone and maybe it works better on the Mac.

So have either of you on this list/thread noticed the difference since
March and is there a solution and I'm just ignorant of the solution?

Thanks for any help.

Subject: Can I change my Zoom name on my iPad mini?

I’ve been on zoom now for a while. I registered with my first and last name
Wayback win. I know it is possible to change your name on a one time basis
after you connect, see participants, tap on that, and your name, and you can
change it. But it doesn’t stick across sessions. So I want to know if it is
possible to actually change the name so that it shows up all the time when you
go to a zoom meeting. Any help?
Mary

Re: Siri’s selective hearing problem still prevails at the end of the iOS 16 cycle

2023-06-12 Thread Ron Canazzi

Hi Group,

I have been using the iPhone for over 4 years now and I use Siri only in
a limited context.  While I can use the text keyboard, I am still quite
slow at it and so I choose to use Siri for Text messages. It works quite
well if you speak slowly--using some punctuation  and have limited
background noise.

As far as phone calls, I have all important contacts: doctors,
pharmacies, family members, friends in contact from which I use the
standard navigation techniques to access and dial them. If I have to
call someone or some business that is not in my contacts and I know the
number, then I use Siri.

As far as opening apps, I group the ones I use the most into
folder--using the edit method of drag and drop and placing these folders
on page one of the home scre3en.  Again, I use standard navigation
techniques to navigate quickly to the folders and double tap on the
program name to access and initiate their functions.

...So am I unusual in operating this way?

I will get the call x person in my contacts and Siri responding with What do
you want to know about X person, but that is the exception and pretty seldom.
I suspect that is a connection issue with my WiFi...

Perfect example. And I bet if I tried that on my old phone which I can’t
because it no longer has a Sim, it would probably work perfectly. I’m not
buying this business about the new tone and the delay being the cause. I
interact with Siri the same way all the time. So if it’s the problem with the
tone or the speaking delay not being long enough, I should have the problem
consistently. But there are certain things that it never ever gets wrong. And
the App Store is the most glaringly obvious one. It never misses opening the
App Store.

Siri: Sorry Something went wrong.
I can give a myriad of other similar examples too. Siri is still hot garbage
all these years later.

Way back at the beginning of iOS 16’s cycle, people were complaining about the
new tone for Siri and about problems getting Siri to respond appropriately. I
was certainly one of those people. N Now, many months later, I’m still one of
those people. Certain things I can ask. Siri never screws up. Open the App
Store, for instance. I don’t think it ever missed that command. But open BARD
Mobile. Open the name of my credit union, and many other open commands as often
as not meet with some stupidity about what it found on the web or how it
doesn’t think I have such an app, even though it has opened the app many times
in the past. I thought it was supposed to have some kind of on device machine
learning, which would help it disambiguate things it wasn’t sure of. This must
not be true, because its overall performance has maintained its low level,
whereas on iOS 15, the very same Siri with the very same commands yields
reasonable results almost all of the time. So, whatever Apple did in iOS 16 has
not been fixed as far as I’m concerned. I can only hope they do better in iOS
17.

Issue With Zoom and iPhone App

2023-06-11 Thread Ron Canazzi

Hi Group,

I am a newcomer to this list.

I am a reasonably competent user of the Apple iPhone series since
2019--starting with the iPhone 8 and now using the iPhone SE 2022. I
have been using the Zoom app for the iPhone almost since the beginning
of my experience in 2019.  The app was very accessible and interfaced
well with all aspects of the VoiceOver screen reader app until March of
2023. With that Zoom upgrade sometime in March of this year, the ability
of VoiceOver to identify the current speaker as the conversation
progresses has been lost on my iPhone. In the past if multiple people
were speaking and if you had the focus centered on the area where the
video appears, you would d hear VoiceOver reacting as follows:

Displaying Joe Smith's video (after he stops speaking)
displaying Mary Jones' video (after she stops speaking)
displaying Bob Green's video (and so on.)

Now, all I hear is my own screen name. At times when the speaker
changes, I hear some odd speech which sighted people who are observing
do not see. I am not sure quite what is being said but it involves
numbers and references to e-mail and other disjointed things.

This issue is extremely inconvenient--particularly in a large group of
strangers in a Zoom communication. I now cannot be sure who exactly is
talking and therefore cannot address questions to particular people.

Someone suggested changing an item under meeting settings that says:
'self video mirror' and by default it is checked as active. I unchecked
this, but this did not solve the issue.

Has any visually impaired person on this list noticed this issue and if
so is there a solution? I have already written to the Apple
accessibility people and they said they weren't aware of what was going
on and that I should contact Zoom itself. I did this and with both the
Zoom general UI e-mail address s well as the app developer in the app
store and have received no response.

Thanks in advance for any help.
