Don’t bother with Fluent Forever. The app’s not VoiceOver accessible and they showed no interest in trying to make it so when I reached out to them during my trial period. Hey Mark, I realize I was not the intended person from whom you were hoping to hear, but I've been using Duolingo exclusively and 99% successfully from an assistive technological standpoint. I started with the app on my previous phone, a Samsung. Then when I was gifted an iPad Mini 6th Edition back in November, I put the app on that as well. Then following this, when I upgraded from my old Samsung to my new iPhone 13 ProMax, I put the app on this newest device. I've had no issues with using the app to successfully learn my language of choice, Spanish as well. I also did pay for the annual subscription to the app, so perhaps that does have something to do with this, I'm not entirely sure. The only thing I would say about the app is that when you're given the option/opportunity to do a beat-the-clock activity, or timed activity in other words, I don't get those done as fast as say someone with sight might do. I could probably do better with these given enough time, patience, and practice. We'll see what happens when my almost-five-year-old daughter goes to kindergarten in the Fall. With regard to my recent experimentation with Duo Lingo, so far, I am not finding the app accessible. So, after opening the app, I did not create an account; at least not yet. RE: Looking for accessible language learning Apps
Duolingo is the top accessible app in my book; closely followed by Babble, but still Duolingo offers the best experience especially from an assistive tech perspective. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Brandon A. Olivares Sent: Saturday, March 12, 2022 5:54 PM To: VIPhone Subject: Re: Looking for accessible language learning Apps I've used Duolingo before, and it is definitely accessible. No, personally I don't think that Duolingo, by itself, is enough to learn a language to fluency. It's always going to require real-life conversation with natives of that language. Italki is a great service for that, but I do think Duolingo is very useful. Brandon > On Mar 12, 2022, at 4:23 PM, M. Re: Looking for accessible language learning Apps
I have been using duo lingo for the past 18 months in order to learn German. It is an excellent app which I am using on my iPhone. However I have just come back from holiday where there were many Germans and I was quite disappointed as I thought I was approaching fluency and yet, although I could understand what they were talking about, I couldn't actually converse with them, not as such anyway. But it is a really good app but I agree, i probably need a German conversation group as well. Sent from my iPhone by Alison may 0777 315 8181 > On 12 Mar 2022, at 10:54 pm, Brandon A. RE: Looking for accessible language learning Apps
As a learning strategy, gaming is useful because it brings about the ludic factor into the learning process, which provides a more similar approach to the way little kids learn by reacting to stimulation. However, learning a language really takes a combination of strategies, effort, motivation, and some kind of formal instruction. Of course, one may ask, to which degree do you need to dig deeper into strategies and formal instruction? The answer depends on learner’s realistic goal. If you want to hold a conversation with acquaintances or friends,, you may allow yourself to set the bar low, but you won’t be able to understand what is spoken in a different context, let say, a lecture. Learning through gaming is a powerful ally, but ineffective if learners use it as a panacea, so to speak. Best, Leo Bado -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of M. With regard to my recent experimentation with Duo Lingo, so far, I am not finding the app accessible. So, after opening the app, I did not create an account; at least not yet. Perhaps this may have something to do with my interface experience. Because I have a passing acquaintance with the language, I selected Spanish as my free language of choice. I've used Duolingo before, and it is definitely accessible. No, personally I don't think that Duolingo, by itself, is enough to learn a language to fluency. It's always going to require real-life conversation with natives of that language. Italki is a great service for that, but I do think Duolingo is very useful. Re: Looking for accessible language learning Apps
Are you using voice over or are you using zoom? If using voice over everything reads out very well I’ve had no issues in setting up an account of course I did this a long time ago like back in 2014 I’m now in the Emerald league in Spanish because I want to brush up on it. So far so good. By the way I use voice over and I’m totally blind. Plus if you want to ever try to chat with anybody in Spanish I think for plus members that have certain audio classes to sign up for but I’ve never done that nor do I wish to do so but they do have stories to listen to that you can actually unlock it’s like reading comprehension they have a series of questions after that. There’s even a Spanish podcast with Duolingo. Anyway back to your set up, how did you choose a language without setting up an account first? Did you press like a skip button maybe that’s why? Re: Looking for accessible language learning Apps
Hello Mark, That is not the case with Duolingo. There aren’t any photos they display the words both in English and the language that you’re learning say English in Spanish for example and you have to match the Spanish word with the English word no pictures involved there are tabs per options and when I mean tap the pairs, you just double tap like you would since you’re using voiceover. When you’ve gotten it all correct you’ll hear a little chime telling you that it’s done and that you’ve successfully matched each foreign word with English for example. I have never tried Pimsleur before I mean I’ve heard their audio tapes but that was way back in the day lol! Didn’t know they had an app and as for dual lingo plus which is the subscription the cheapest one is $9.99 a month. Hi, This is not the way the current app works. I haven't encountered any such questions in the over 60 lessons I've done so far. Give it a try and see. Looking for accessible language learning Apps
Hello everyone, I can't remember if this was recently asked here, or not. If so, I do apologize. I know I saw similar questions somewhere. Anyway, I am looking for an accessible App, to help me possibly learn a new language. I am most interested in learning Chinese, Spanish, and maybe one other as well.
