Hi Richard,

You would think this can be turned off or on in Settings, but I also can’t
find it. However, if you start playing a Podcast and tap on the “Effects”
button you can see if it is turned on there and you can turn it off if it is on
or on if it is off.

Also, if you go to Settings and look for “SIRI Shortcuts” under the
Advanced heading you can set up a SIRI shortcut to turn on and off Smart Speed.

There are also many other options for setting up shortcuts, you can set up
one for example for playing, pausing, skipping and rewinding etc. I just set
one up for playing and called it “Play Overcast”.

There are also SIRI Shortcuts you can set up for each of your Podcasts,
e.g. if you have subscribed to Applevis you can tap on it and record a phrase
like “Play Applevis on Overcast”.

The one reason why at one point I really tried to use the Apple Podcast app
was because it works with SIRI, now with SIRI Shortcuts and Overcast already
having implemented this feature there is even less reason. Now I just wish
Audible would allow users to set up SIRI Shortcuts so I could say “Play
Audible”.

Regards,

Sieghard

I didn’t even know there was a $9.99 annual subscription option for Overcast
and certainly as a Voiceover user I never saw an ad.
Here is the information from the Downcast page on the canadian App Store, take
off about 30% for US prices, e.g. the $3.99 purchase price is probably $2.99 US:

Hi Richard,

You would think this can be turned off or on in Settings, but I also can’t find
it. However, if you start playing a Podcast and tap on the “Effects” button you
can see if it is turned on there and you can turn it off if it is on or on if
it is off.
Also, if you go to Settings and look for “SIRI Shortcuts” under the Advanced
heading you can set up a SIRI shortcut to turn on and off Smart Speed.
There are also many other options for setting up shortcuts, you can set up one
for example for playing, pausing, skipping and rewinding etc. I just set one up
for playing and called it “Play Overcast”.
There are also SIRI Shortcuts you can set up for each of your Podcasts, e.g. if
you have subscribed to Applevis you can tap on it and record a phrase like
“Play Applevis on Overcast”.
The one reason why at one point I really tried to use the Apple Podcast app was
because it works with SIRI, now with SIRI Shortcuts and Overcast already having
implemented this feature there is even less reason. Now I just wish Audible
would allow users to set up SIRI Shortcuts so I could say “Play Audible”.

Regards,
Sieghard

RE: Most accessible podcast app?

2018-10-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
If anybody else want to write the developer of Overcast to request that the
episode length is spoken if you have it set to stream only, here is the direct
email for feedback:
feedb...@overcast.fm<mailto:feedb...@overcast.fm>
I just sent the following message:

Hello,

I am a Voiceover user and have had my first iOS device in 2009 when Voiceover
was first introduced. In those days I started out with the iCatcher Podcast
app, then I used Downcast for a while and while I tried Apple’s Podcast app, I
have now been using Overcast for many years. I know that a lot of other blind
and visually impaired users also really like your app and I’d like to thank you
for making it so wonderfully accessible.

However, just today the discussion about Podcast apps came up on the Google
list “Viphone” where about 2,000 blind and visually impaired users of iOS
devices discuss iOS, Apple hardwear, accessories and of course apps. One list
member pointed out he preferred Downcast because it allowed for more
customization options between global and per-Podcast settings and also that if
you chose to stream your Podcasts that the length of the Podcast was announced
by Voiceover.
I noticed that with Overcast you either have to download the Podcast to hear
the length or you have to start streaming it before you can see how long it is.
If the length of the Podcast can be displayed by Downcast I assume this
information is available and it would be great if this could be changed in a
future update so that along with “streamable” Voiceover would also announce the
length.

Best regards,
Sieghard

You are correct, I just tried this with Jonathan Mosen’s part 2 about his smart

music played I stopped it and went back and it now said “55 minutes”.
I must admit though that this information if it is available for Downcast would
be nice to also have included in Overcast.
Especially Applevis Podcasts can be anywhere from a few minutes long to an hour
and being able to see this information right there in the listing is nice.

This podcast is made up of 3 columnists, one liberal, one moderate, and one

Hi all,

I use both Overcast and Downcast, but personally I have a slight preference for
Downcast. I love the Overcast effects which have been discussed earlier in this
thread, but with Downcast I really like being able to see the length of each
episode before I start to play it. I am subscribed to far too many podcasts,
some in each app, and I would love to know how to check the episode length in
Overcast in order to make maximum use of time. I freely admit that my
preference for Downcast may have a lot to do with familiarity. I like to be
able to stream some podcast feeds and download others, and at the moment I
can't remember whether this is possible in Overcast. Downcast has a lot of
individual feed customisations, such as the number of episodes to keep, when to
refresh the feed, etc. I think they're both great apps.

Best

Yes but the episode has to be downloaded before it will say that. So all would
hear is 107 the final episode in this series, Jonathan Mosen's Smart Home,
October 8th, until I download the episode then it will say 55 minutes.

RE: Most accessible podcast app?

2018-10-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Actually, you are correct, I just checked an Applevis episode and it just said
"Streamable", once I downloaded it it told me it was 8 minutes.
I agree that if in Downcast the length of an episode is porvided even when it
is not downloaded then that is a nice feature, somebody should sugggest it to
the developer of Overcast since I assume it can be done if Downcast can do it.

Sieghard

Thanks, Richard and Maria, I think the reason why I'm not seeing the length of
episodes in Overcast is because I stream them. In Downcast, you can see the
length regardless of whether you stream or download, and I do some of each.
Richard, am I right in assuming that you download your episodes in Overcast?

Thanks,

You can set to stream on Downcast as well. It shows time duration, etc.
For the longest, Overcast only went to 2X speed, which for me, was too slow.
I'm a 3X playback person and Downcast for a while was the only app that offered
a higher playback speed like this. I don't listen to all my podcasts at 3x, but
it is for the majority of my podcasts and being able to crank through a daily
podcast is appreciated.
I bugged the Overcast guy over the years about a faster playback speed and I
guess he got tired of people like me and others asking him about it and finally
added it.
That said and maybe it's just familiarity, but I still prefer Downcast.
Overcast is a simpler layout, but Downcast allows for a lot more
customization. Be it globally or for individual feeds.
My global setting is for streaming but for the feeds where they're a series on
History or a particular event where I may want to listen off-line or whatever.
ICatcher was my first third party podcast app and it was fine, but I moved on
after I discovered Downcast and since the iCatcher dev said he wasn't going to
increase playback speed, it was bye Felicia for me.
The native Apple podcast app really isn't all that

You can set it to delete after completion, manually, or 24 hours after

Re: Most accessible podcast app?

2018-10-14 Thread Maria Reyes
Yes but the episode has to be downloaded before it will say that. So all would
hear is 107 the final episode in this series, Jonathan Mosen's Smart Home,
October 8th, until I download the episode then it will say 55 minutes.

RE: Most accessible podcast app?

2018-10-14 Thread Richard Turner
Also, you can set Overcast to download or stream and you do not have to
download it to find out the length.
You can set it to delete after completion, manually, or 24 hours after
completion.

In Overcast, when I flick to an episode, I hear: for example, 107 the final
episode in this series, Jonathan Mosen's Smart Home, October 8th, 55 minutes.

And with the smart speed feature, it would be less.

I don't know if Downcast just puts the time sooner, but the length of the
podcast is listed.

Hi Nicola,
You have to download the episode first before you can see how long the episode
is. At least that’s the only way I know of.

RE: Most accessible podcast app?

2018-10-14 Thread Alan Lemly
Harry,

I'm not sure either Overcast or Downcast is more accessible than the other but
I much prefer the user interface of Overcast and it is very accessible.

RE: Most accessible podcast app?

2018-10-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Yes, absolutely, I think while iCatcher is accessible, most people use Overcast
or Downcast and I think more use Overcast. Not sure what Larry found is lacking
in terms of customizations in Overcast, but one thing it has which Downcast
doesn’t have is this Smart Speed option which really does work and makes a
difference. I don’t listen to Podcasts that much, but Overcast displays at the
bottom of Settings how much time you saved with that feature and I just saw for
me it is 94 minutes.

Sieghard

RE: Most accessible podcast app?

2018-10-14 Thread Richard Turner
Since Sieghard kindly replied to my question that I sent to the wrongthread,
here is his reply that was meant for this thread.

I also prefer Overcast, I really like their feature where you can compress
silences/small pauses during speech and you can set the speed to 1.25x which
makes it just ever so much faster without it sounding too fast and between
those two features a 1 hour Podcast only takes about 40 minutes.
