I have had Earpods go bad on me on a regular bases, given their thin cables and
the amout of use and abuse I put them through explains the wear and tear.
Usually voice/microphone quality is an indicator, I have also had a set which
worked fine when it came to the microphone and the right side
Well, that's a very good point and I feel more than a little stupid for not
realizing that the phone microphone would pick up the slack in my circumstance.
I'll get out another pair of earpods and run some more tests as was suggested
in the first responses to this thread

and iOS 11.3 involving failing microphones. Sounds like it may possibly be
related to your issue.
While I haven't experienced the particular scenario you described, I
have seen something similar when attempting to dictate a text while
using the wired earpods. The results of the dictation are completely
garbled and show no resemblance to what I actually said. I dictate on
my iPhone quite often
