Okay, my issue is resolved.
This involved some very frantic and frustrating trouble shooting, but here's
what happened in case it happens to anyone else.
As far as I can tell, The Screen got locked and speech somehow got muted
when I tried picking up and then dropping the keyboard.

Just as a bit of info for anyone interested, you can unlock the screen by
touching just above the home key, and toward the left side of the screen, or
