Re: If you like Overcast it seems you now need iOS 13

It looks like if you are running an older version of iOS, the incompatible
update will not show up. A good reason to keep automatic updates off, though.

What I have heard second hand is that developers are having a lot of problem
going to 13. A lot of them are just doing what a lot of users are doing and
waiting for fixes to help them. Only what I heard, not saying it is true for
all developers. A lot of overhauls in 13 and so on. All in all, I have had

RE: If you like Overcast it seems you now need iOS 13

2019-10-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
There comes a point when every developer drops support for older software and
to me this makes sense.
I do find it surprising, however, why a developer would drop support for iOS 12
less than 4 weeks after iOS 13 came out and when certainly iOS 13 has not yet
been adopted as widely as it will be in another 3 or 4 months. I guess as long
as somebody with iOS 12 or earlier simply doesn’t get the app update and can
continue to use the app (I am talking about apps in general and not necessarily
just Overcast now) then that is OK, what would be not so good is if somebody
got the update on their iOS 12 device and the app would no longer work
afterwards. Dark Mode, for example, is an iOS 13 feature so it of course makes
sense that it wouldn’t work in iOS 12 or earlier, but it is not like when Apple
announced only 64 bit apps would be supported going forward and there came a
point when apps which had been abandoned by their developer just didn’t work
any more or disappeared from the app store.

Best regards,
Sieghard

I never said that developers won't support older versions of IOS, but when
we're talking about a few percentage points of the market, I just pointed out
why some developers would find it economically advantageous to drop support for
older versions of IOS.

Hi Mary,

Maybe whatever version of Overcast one has on a device running iOS 12 will
continue to work, but maybe then you won’t get updates.
I am actually not just spreading an idea with no basis in fact, I was simply
repeating what it said in the “What’s New” for the latest update from 2 days
ago which I am quoting below and which you can read for yourself in the App
Store description for Overcast:

What’s New - Oct 11, 2019
Version 2019.10
- Dark Mode support
- Fixes for iOS 13
iOS 13 is now required.

A bit further down in the app description it says:
Compatibility
Requires iOS 13.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Best regards,

RE: If you like Overcast it seems you now need iOS 13

2019-10-12 Thread Cristobal Muñoz
I’d venture to guess that the update is only shown/offered to those who are
upgraded to 13.x and can support it. That or it just hasn’t rolled out to
everyone yet. I too am still on iOS 12.4.1 and haven’t received any Overcast
update. Not worried about it though since it seems that all it is for is dark
mode stuff anyway.

app, mentions iOS 13 is now required for this app. I find it interesting how
some apps drop support apparently for even iOS 12 already and I wonder why this
is.

The same seems to be true for this ScripTalk app which was recently mentioned.

I have a Overcast on my phone running iOS 12. So I’m not sure where you’re
getting the idea you must have iOS 13.

2019-10-12 Thread Mary Otten
A couple of the apps I have on my phone have recently had updates. And they
have talked about providing fixes for things on iOS 10 and 11. So, Christopher,
I think you’re out in left field here on this one.

Re: If you like Overcast it seems you now need iOS 13

2019-10-12 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Well, Apple pretty much forces everyone to upgrade to the latest version
of IOS, and imagine how much Apple and app developers save when they
don't have to test their apps on older versions of IOS or provide
support for older versions of IOS. All the app developers lose is those
customers running on devices that don't support the latest version of
IOS. You frequently here from developers how expensive and time
consuming it is to develop on Android when they have to worry about so
many devices and so many versions of Android.
