RE: Two factor authentication issues?

2016-10-28 Thread Ron Pelletier
Hi Mary,

A friend of mine found out after enabling 2 factor authentication that his
Apple TV third generation didn't work with it. He had to disable it.

I'm not worried about getting the code and entering it, although I don't have
any vision. When I am worried about our glitches such that the code doesn't
come or whatever, essentially making your two factor authentication unusable
and locking you out on your new device. There have been some talk about some
major problems, not specified, unless I didn't see the follow up message, with
this system. So I was wondering what they were.
 That would be a problem.

You are indeed correct. The old two-step verification uses the recovery key,
while the two-factor authentication does not have that option. I made the
change to the 2FA a few months ago.

Hi,
Wow in iOS 10.0.2 I think it was at the time no such option was presented
during phone setup at all; nor did the lovely Apple rep who guided me
through my very rare spell of panic indicate that such could be used
anymore. To further confuse matters I thought there were two variations
of

Apple's tfa and the older form made use of such a key but it was my
understanding that had you switched to the newer incarnation therein such
was gone. If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will correct.
Either way it can be quite confusing and sadly it's why many just don't
bother with it. I'll probably turn it on as soon as my second iDevice
arrives hopefully next week.

Hi,
the only time I encountered an issue with this was recently when upgrading
from one iPhone to another the system texted the code to my number but
since

my phone wasn't fully up and running and operational I couldn't get it to
sign into iCloud properly. So I had to set up phone as new, skipping
iCloud

sign in go to apple ID and turn off TFA and then restore phone from cloud
after the fact. their system used to have a recovery key you could use for
times when you're off line but they've taken that away so much as it pains
me for the moment I have it turned off. If one has more than one Apple

some
heart racy kind of moments so for now it's off but usually it's my
practice

to use it wherever and whenever I can but I admit sometimes it causes the

Re: Two factor authentication issues?

2016-10-26 Thread Helga Schreiber
Hi all! How are you all? This is a great question! So I activated two-factor
authentication as well! I had it for two weeks. So this is the issue that I
encounter. So when I install the IOS 10.1 update, adn ehn I got to icloud adn
to set it up, it ask me for my password, and then it gave me a message saying
waiting for approval, yu need to loggign to icloud and approve this iPhone 6S.
Thsi was giving me a lot of stress since I logging to iCloud on my Mac, and
other ios devices, but it did not do anything! It is good but it gives em more
problems than helping. Me. So the next day, I turn off two-factor
authentication guys! I wasn't able approve my iPhone, and I need icloud since.
I will get aniPhone 7 this week. I really don't know why I could not approve my
iPhone. So I doubletap on aprove later. So that means my icloud settings was
not complete and so on. So I end up turning off two-factor authentication. Do
you hve any idea wy I could not approve it? I did not know where to go to
approve it. With this many peopel did not help me ata ll! I look forward in
hearing from you soon. Thanks and God bless!

Hi everyone I also did and I called the Apple accessibility line and I had a

to worry about it. Just remember your answers. I will share you did have a few
different things you could choose from and I am very happy with the help I got.
I am a slower user and they were very kind and worked with me to get it done.

Mary,

I hear you and I'm a bit worried about the two-factor authentication as well. I
also got put on it after upgrading to iOS 10.1 if I understood the Apple email
I received correctly. It had a link as you mentioned to turn it off but when I
clicked on it, I got some message about having to change my password so I left
it alone. I normally handle 2-factor authentication using a text to receive an
authorization code but if I'm setting up a new iPhone, I'm scratching my head
as to how this is going to work. Hopefully, it will offer an email option.

Re: Two factor authentication issues?

2016-10-26 Thread Mary Otten
Well, I do have an iPad, so I'm thinking that the message would come through on
the iPad even if I was setting up an iPhone. Also, as somebody else noted, I
tend not to shut off my old phone until the new one is actually set up. So I
guess the message would come across on the old phone. As long as there isn't a
problem with receipt of the messages, I guess I'll be OK.

RE: Two factor authentication issues?

2016-10-26 Thread Alan Lemly
I feel more informed about two-factor authentication after reading the Apple
Support article found here:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204915

I'll post the full text of the article after my signature. To avoid an issue
with setting up a new iPhone, I think I'll hold onto my old iPhone to use it as
the authorized device until the new one is set up. I also have a home phone
number I can provide as a fallback.

Two-factor authentication for Apple ID

Two-factor authentication is an extra layer of security for your Apple ID
designed to ensure that you're the only person who can access your account,
even if someone knows your password.

How it works

With two-factor authentication, your account can only be accessed on devices
you trust, like your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. When you want to sign in to a new
device for the first time, you'll need to provide two pieces of
information—your password and the six-digit verification code that's
automatically displayed on your trusted devices. By entering the code, you're
verifying that you trust the new device. For example, if you have an iPhone and
are signing into your account for the first time on a newly purchased Mac,
you'll be prompted to enter your password and the verification code that's
automatically displayed on your iPhone.

Because your password alone is no longer enough to access your account,
two-factor authentication dramatically improves the security of your Apple ID
and all the personal information you store with Apple.

Once signed in, you won’t be asked for a verification code on that device again
unless you sign out completely, erase the device, or need to change your
password for security reasons. When you sign in on the web, you can choose to
trust your browser, so you won’t be asked for a verification code the next time
you sign in from that computer.

Trusted devices

A trusted device is an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch with iOS 9 and later, or Mac
with OS X El Capitan and later that you've already signed in to using
two-factor authentication. It’s a device we know is yours and that can be used
to verify your identity by displaying a verification code from Apple when you
sign in on a different device or browser.

Trusted phone numbers

A trusted phone number is a number that can be used to receive verification
codes by text or phone call. You must verify at least one trusted phone number
to enroll in two-factor authentication. You should also consider verifying
other phone numbers you can access, such as a home phone, or a number used by a
family member or close friend. You can use these numbers if you temporarily
can't access your own devices.

Verification codes

A verification code is a temporary code sent to your trusted device or phone
number when you sign in to a new device or browser with your Apple ID. You can
also get a verification code from Settings on your trusted device
 .

A verification code is different from the device passcode
you enter to unlock your iPhone, iPad,
or iPod touch.

Description:

Turn on two-factor authentication for your Apple ID

Two-factor authentication is currently available to iCloud users with at least
one device that's using iOS 9 or OS X El Capitan or later. Learn more
 .

You can follow the steps below to turn on two-factor authentication.

On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 9 or later:

1. Go to Settings > iCloud > tap your Apple ID.
2. Tap Password & Security.
3. Tap Turn on Two-Factor Authentication.

On your Mac with OS X El Capitan or later:

1. Go to Apple () menu > System Preferences > iCloud > Account Details.
2. Click Security.
3. Click Turn on Two-Factor Authentication.

Description:

What to remember when you use two-factor authentication

Two-factor authentication significantly improves the security of your Apple ID.
After you turn it on, signing into your account will require both your password
and access to your trusted devices or trusted phone number. To keep your
account as secure as possible and help ensure you never lose access, there are
a few simple guidelines you should follow:

* Remember your Apple ID password.
* Use a device passcode on all your devices.
* Keep your trusted phone number(s) up to date.
* Keep your trusted devices physically secure.

Description:

Manage your account

You can manage your trusted phone numbers, trusted devices, and other account
information from your Apple ID account page .

Keep your trusted phone numbers up to date

To use two-factor authentication, you need at least one trusted phone number on
file where you can receive verification codes. You can update your trusted
phone numbers when you follow these steps:

1. Go to your Apple ID account page.

Re: Two factor authentication issues?

2016-10-26 Thread Vicky Collins

Hi Mary and All,

even if you don't choose to use that link, you are still able to
log into your Apple account page and turn off the two factor
authentication.

I've not exactly had a problem setting up a new device with it
turned on, but I have had to tell it to send me a text message
with the six digit code, rather than use the code just sent to
the phone number. I haven't yet, though, set up a brand new
device with iOS 10. For some unknown reason, even when logging
into some of Apple support pages with my current device,
receiving the code via text message works better than getting it
via an alert on the phone. Sometimes, even if I get the code
with the alert, and then double check that I've entered it
correctly, I still get an error and have to use the text message
way.

factor authentication. Subsequently, Apple sent me a notification that
included a link, which, if I activated, will let me undo the changes I
made. This link will go away as of sometime next week. Therefore, I am
interested in the details of the problems that arise with two factor
authentication. I gave them my mobile phone number where they could send
the six digit code that will be needed when and if I get a new Apple
device where I log in with my Apple ID. I certainly don't want some
unsolvable problem happening down the road. So what are the issues? Is it
something that happens when you're trying to enable two factor
authentication? In that case, mine is already done, so no problem. If it
is a problem that happens when you're actually trying to start using a new
device, that's another matter, and would make me consider revoking my two
factor authentication.

RE: Two factor authentication issues?

2016-10-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Mary,

I use "Authy" which is an app that provides codes for two-factor
authentication. You have to set up the accounts which support this and then
whenever you need a code you just open the app, select the accunt you need a
code for and it displays a 6-digit code. However, you do have to be somewhat
quick since the code is only there for 30 seconds, then it changes and the next
code is displayed for 30 seconds etc. Of course you still have the option to
get a code texted to you even if you set your primary method to use an app and
also not all services support these apps. Authy is just one option, Google
Authenticator is another and I think Microsoft also has one. Microsoft Id's
support this if you enable two-factor authentication and so does Google and
Dropbox. Apple of course uses it's own method and Roboform, the password
manager I use, sends codes by email to the registered email address.

Regards,
Sieghard

I'm not worried about getting the code and entering it, although I don't have
any vision. When I am worried about our glitches such that the code doesn't
come or whatever, essentially making your two factor authentication unusable
and locking you out on your new device. There have been some talk about some
major problems, not specified, unless I didn't see the follow up message, with
this system. So I was wondering what they were.
 That would be a problem.

RE: Two factor authentication issues?

2016-10-26 Thread Rose Combs
Microsoft and I have been at odds because they send me a code to change
password and by the time I read it, try to get back to where it is needed, mix
up or forget it go back again, it expires! For my part, if I can get away
without it I will but then, my phone is usually nearby, in my purse or pocket,
on my desk or nightstand and I live alone. I am very protective of it, I don't
key the 6-digit or even the 4-digit code in place because it is annoying to
have to keep putting it in every time I need to use the phone or applications
on the phone.

As I said it hardly leaves my side unless I am home alone doors locked, and
know no one else is here. Only thing is, often take it out of a pocket while
in the bathroom so it does not fall where it should not be, leave it on the
vanity then have to call it or have someone call it so I can find it, usually
same place every time so now I look there first!
I don't recommend this for everyone, in fact I don't recommend it for most
people!

Hi Mary

Especially for Microsoft and Windows users besides their apple devices, be
aware that programs like windows live mail do apparently not give access
anymore to icloud mail accounts while they require 2steps verificcation and
this is the case with my wlm.

I think any time you use a device and need to enter your password you get a
text with a code. Since I never do well with these, reading numbers and
getting back to enter them, forgetting them and then time out I have opted not
