Re: Does having screen curtain on save battery power?

thanks for this, when I was setting up my new iPhone 8, bought after the death
of my six, I seem to remember turning off something called "true tone". I think
it was under settings/display and brightness. do you think I should turn back
on?

also, where is it documented that VoiceOver and screen curtain will put the
brightness at zero?
Thanks, Sandy

Just go to Accessibility Settings > Display Accommodations and make sure auto
brightness is on.
It seems that now if it is on and you turn screen curtain on brightness is set
to 0% and if you turn screen curtain off the auto brightness kicks in and
adjusts it to an appropriate level.

turn auto brightness off and then manually set your brightness to 0% or 5% if

Also, just as a little tip which I think many of us forget, when you can’t find
a particular setting but pretty much know a word from it’s title, just try the
search field at the top of the main settings screen.
If you type either “auto” or “brightness” or even “bright” the setting for
adjusting auto brightness shows up in the list of matches. It even reads the
settings group where you find that setting.
Now, here is an interesting item: Auto Brightness exists twice, once in General

Accommodation. If you tap on the item in the search results it does take you to
the Accessibility Settings, but interestingly enough not straight into Display

When I checked Magnifier the setting for Auto Brightness there was turned off
on my phone although it’s turned on in Display Accommodations. I assume maybe
Apple moved it to Accessibility since you can control it separately for when
you use the phone normally and when you turn on magnifier?

Hi,
with iOS 11, if screen curtain and auto brightness is enabled. Brightness goes
to 0%. With that said, you will conserve battery power.

RE: Does having screen curtain on save battery power?

2018-01-22 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Nimer,

I agree for the most part as long as you have auto brightness on which rarely
puts your brightness about 20 or 25% unless you are outside in bright sunlight.
I would say you might notice a difference if you set it to 90% manually or 0%,
though.
Whether given exactly the same usage (difficult to do) you would save 10
minutes or 1 hour I don’t know, somehow I doubt it would be 1 hour, though. I
rarely turn on screen curtain anyways and I can’t be bothered to set my phone
to 0% manually so that every time I want to show my wife something I have to
turn it up. If for some reason I turn on screen curtain I usually remember when
I show the phone to somebody and they tell me the screen is black. What’s very
interesting is if you tell somebody “Hey,m look at that picture of my dog,
isn’t it cute” and you have screen curtain on and they are so embarrassed that
they say “Yeah, that’s a great picture”. Sort of like that story of the queen
who walked around the palace naked and asked everybody if they didn’t think her
dress was beautiful and nobody wanted to say anything against her *smile*.
It’s a good way to find out how comfortable somebody is with the fact that you
are blind.

Even setting brightness to zero won’t really make any dent in the battery. If
it does, it is a negligible amount. This has a lot to do with the type of
display technology used. In an iPhone X, this should make a more meaningful
impact on battery performance.
If someone disagrees, they should test it. Use your phone normally with and
without, and see what, difference, if any, you observe.

Thanks.

It does if it automatically sets brightness to 0%. This way you can turn auto
brightness on and then turn the screen curtain on. Your brightness will be at
0% despite the auto brightness and if you want a sighted person to look at the
phone all you have to do is turn screen curtain off and the phone will revert
to whatever auto brightness setting is appropriate.
If you turn auto brightness of and manually set brightness to 0% then you have
to go into Settings > Display and Brightness and turn it up which involves a
lot more steps than a 3-finger triple tap.

Sieghard

In any case, unless the iPhone is an iPhone X, the curtain does not conserve
battery.

Ed,

Turning auto brightness on and off was moved into Accessibility Settings
although I don’t for the life of me know why Apple did this, according to my
logic it is much more appropriate under Display and Brightness in the main
Settings where it used to be.
Anyhow, open Accessibility Settings, you are looking for “Display
Accommodations”, it’s the fourth item from the top after Voiceover, Zoom and
Magnifier.

As for brightness dropping to 0% when auto brightness is enabled and screen
curtain is on this does seem to be the case although when I first tried this it
didn’t seem to be so. When I first toggled screen curtain on and checked it
still read the same value as before, but once I locked my phone and then
unlocked it it was reading as 0% so it seems that if you turn on screen curtain
the phone first has to lock and then as long as you keep screen curtain on when
you unlock it the screen brightness is indeed at 0%.

Actually you can adjust your brightness in control center.

Regards,

Sieghard

turn auto brightness off and then manually set your brightness to 0% or 5% if
you want just a bit of backlighting.

> Accessibility > Magnifier and also General > Accessibility > Display
Accommodation. If you tap on the item in the search results it does take you to
the Accessibility Settings, but interestingly enough not straight into Display
Accommodations.

When I checked Magnifier the setting for Auto Brightness there was turned off
on my phone although it’s turned on in Display Accommodations. I assume maybe
Apple moved it to Accessibility since you can control it separately for when
you use the phone normally and when you turn on magnifier?

Sieghard

Hi,
with iOS 11, if screen curtain and auto brightness is enabled. Brightness goes
to 0%. With that said, you will conserve battery power.

Re: Does having screen curtain on save battery power?

2018-01-21 Thread Kelly Pierce
It is correct. this is because on LCD screens, the same amount of
energy is used to project black on the screen as white or other
colors. The display elements are not turned off but just turned to
black. On OLED screens such as with the iPhone X, a black screen
turnes off the diodes.
