Re: Fitness and Health app readings?

2020-12-12 Thread Malcolm Parfitt
To answer my own question I just found this.

What is a KCAL in exercise?
The number of kilocalories (kcals) you burn depends on the type of exercise you
do. (A kcal is the same amount of energy as a calorie, except that the custom
is to use the term "calories" when we're talking about food and "kilocalories"
when we're talking about exercise. They're both the same amount of energy.)

Hope that helps someone and clears up any confusion.

Re: Fitness and Health app readings?

2020-12-12 Thread Malcolm Parfitt
Hi,

I am aware what the figures refer to and the difference between active calories
and calories.

My question is regarding the Kilo prefix to the value.

Those of us that use the metric system will appreciate things like kilometre
refer to 1000 meters.

So if my reading was:

Active Kilocalories 750KCAL

This it suggesting 750 times 1000 which is 75. That is rather an
impressive number

Or is as Chris describes which is a perfectly plausible explanation.

Strange how these units cause confusion.Malcolm Parfitt

Subject: Fitness and Health app readings?

I have just completed an indoor cycle workout after an absence due to medical
necessity.

Looking at the results in both the Fitness and Health apps it says:

Active Kilocalories 750KCAL

Is it really suggesting I burned 75 Calories or am I misreading it?

Thanks for your reply’s,

I understand the measurements are theoretical and are a guide only there are a
number of variables that influence the actual value but it’s useful as a guide
if nothing else.

The Kilo bit threw me a Kilo Gram is 1000 Grams so not for the first time I was
confused.

I should be lighter now my defective kidney has been removed.

After a difficult year that has seen me hospitalised three times I’m back in
the saddle as it were.

Take care all, stay happy and safe.

Re: Fitness and Health app readings?

2020-12-12 Thread Chris Chaffin

After Googling this is what I found.

Of coarse, how many calories burned depends on several factors like weight,
speed, etc.

At a weight of 155 pounds, going 12 to 14 miles per hour for 30 minutes, you
would burn approximately 298 calories.

And, at a weight of 155 pounds, going 14 to 16 miles an hour for 30 minutes,
you would burn approximately 372 calories.

These stats were gathered by Harvard University. But I still look at calories
burned as an estimated number and nothing 100 percent accurate. This said, it
is still good to know a good estimate of what I have accomplished for the work
I have done.

It probably is saying that you burned 750 calories. However, I'm not sure
how reliable these sorts of things are. I would look up how many calories a
person typically burns using a stationary bike per minute or per hour and
go from there.

Re: Fitness and Health app readings?

2020-12-12 Thread Chris Chaffin

>From what I read, KCal is the same as calories. Here is just one thing I found.

What is the difference between calories and kilocalories? The "calorie" we
refer to in food is actually kilocalorie. One (1) kilocalorie is the same as
one (1) Calorie (upper case C). A kilocalorie is the amount of heat required to
raise the temperature of 1 kilogram of water one degree Celsius.
