On the iPhone, try refreshing the trash box or empty it.

the mail, you might want to do this.
All of my email accounts are now set to Imap, and I have never had this problem.

I can't speak for gmail other than to suggest she checks her gmail settings
on the web interface to make sure it is set to use IMAP and not POP.
As for the Hotmail account, she should set it up on her iPhone using the
Outlook.com account type. Hotmail does not use IMAP, it uses
