Re: best braille display foor ios and bluetooth

2018-02-05 Thread englishrider91
In regular, 6-dot Braille, before the switch to UEB, dots 4-6 together would
mean whatever word you were writing next was either Italicized, bolded, or
underlined. If you were doing this to more than 3 words in a row, you'd put
dots 4-6 twice before the first word, then once before the last word. To
capitalize something, you just put a dot 6 in front of it.

Thanks,
Ari

Ok, but then you use up an extra cell for a capital letter? I have used six dot
braille with an old fashioned braille machine way back in the ninetees and then
i think we used dot 4 and 6 BEFORE the letter we wanted to capitalize. No idee
how we wrote a word in all caps.

2018-02-04 Thread Paul Richard McGann

to all,

i hhad been braillist ats chool for blind for the  rest of 13 years. i
got along with six-dot and eight-d

ot. when i do duxbury, it is always six-dot after converting print
documents into braille. i get them embossed into braille materials and
pass the books and others to kids.

on iphone, if you use iphone, you get braille display, then hit space
bar plus dot 2,3,6 as you would notice option fro eight-dot to
six-dot. you can enjoy reading books and texts on six-dot option. no
problems.

janet, like deaf read captions on tv, i did read captions. sometimes i
noticed some typo errors. i had to get used to this as i did follow
the captions so well. now i am totally deafblind, i can't see captions
anymore. i do get notes form friends who say sometimes they can't read
cpations due to tech changes. same idea siri can say words but people
are careless not to edit. once i got email from the city's ada
coordinator who is sighted and hearing. i read his email and i
reminded him that he was using siri. he was shocked as everyone who
are my city-county task force on disabilities laughtedas he asked me
how i know. is said because he didn't edit it as when he said about
his frustration with his co-workers. he said, "bare with me..." and i
remind him to look at the word and he got bylushed. i am sure everyone
laughing as he was tryign to say "bear with me..." that is all.

sincerely,

rich

The cursor is dots 7 and 8. And, by the way, I grew up with six dots

Also if someone wanted to read in computer braille, you have to have
the extra dots. But as someone pointed out, that is not the target
audience for the BrailleMe device.

I'm just glad there are finally braille displays that are affordable.
The more the merrier.

Of the above list, the HIMS BrailleEdge 40 was my favorite.  But,

Breaking: APH Announces Orders For the Orbit Reader 20 Will Start February 2

Scott Davert Feb 01, 2018 11:04 PM ET

APH has announced via it's mailing list for the Orbit Reader 20 that they will
start taking orders tomorrow for the much anticipated braille display/notetaker.

In the message, Ken Perry of APH stated: "Once we have received orders for our
available stock, no further orders will be accepted at that time. We expect to
sell out quickly. Rest assured we will have additional quantities available in
the near future, and will keep you posted!" Because of the limited availability
of units, APH is restricting purchases to two Orbit Readers per account or
individual.

The cost for an Orbit Reader 20 is $449 and you will be able to order in
several ways:
•through the APH Shop online for non-quota orders only •calling customer
relations at 800-223-1839 •emailing a purchase order at p...@aph.org •faxing a
purchase order to 502-899-2284

At the time of writing, the Orbit Reader is not yet available online, but is
expected to be available tomorrow.

This day has been a long time coming, with the first official announcement of
the Orbit Reader 20 during the CSUN 2016 conference. For more information about
the Orbit Reader 20, you can [read a review of the device in the January issue
of Access World.

The Braille Me has two methods of showing the cursor. I would have preferred
8 dots myself but I get their reasoning for doing 6. If you just want to read
braille like books, 6 dots is fine and $450 is a heck of a lot better than
three thousand or so. My wife just wants a simple note taker to take to
doctors, etc. and I just want to read NLS braille books from the library. I
used an 18-cell Braille lite for years and managed just fine. We can have two
Braille me devices for less than a thousand.

What it comes down to is personal preference.
I'm waiting to get my hands on the Orbit Reader 20 to see how it compares
to

other displays.
I've used:
HIMS Braille Edge 40,
Baum's Vario Ultra 20 and 40,
Humanware's Braillliant BI,
Freedom Scientific's Focus 40 and 14; not to mention several of the full
braille note takers.

Of the above list, the HIMS BrailleEdge 40 was my favorite. But, when it
died after 3 years and was going to cost close to $2,500 to repair when a
new one was just a little more, I decided to wait to see the Orbit 20,
which

I have not seen yet.

I liked the Braille Edge because it is quiet, solidly built, easy to
switch
from USB to Bluetooth, has basic note taking functionality using an SD
card

and comes with a 2 year warrantee.

It is too bad there are not places where you can go and test all the
displays to see which one fits your needs the best, because there is no
one

display that is right for everyone.

HTH,
Richard

So the focus works well with ios 11? I thought it would be a fairly bulky
device what are your experiences for using it on the go? Does it work well
in combination with laptops or is it to deep so that you have to reach too
far back?
I hope the braille cells wont be broken too quickly… Greetings, Anouk,

2018-02-04 Thread llumpkin
The Braille Me has two methods of showing the cursor. I would have preferred 8
dots myself but I get their reasoning for doing 6.

2018-02-03 Thread Richard Turner

The extra two dots allow you to have a cursor so you actually know where you
are editing.
The cursor is dots 7 and 8. And, by the way, I grew up with six dots as well.
Also if someone wanted to read in computer braille, you have to have the extra
dots. But as someone pointed out, that is not the target audience for the
BrailleMe device.
I'm just glad there are finally braille displays that are affordable.
The more the merrier.

I've used:
HIMS Braille Edge 40,
Baum's Vario Ultra 20 and 40,

Of the above list, the HIMS BrailleEdge 40 was my favorite. But, when it
died after 3 years and was going to cost close to $2,500 to repair when a

I liked the Braille Edge because it is quiet, solidly built, easy to switch

In reading about the BrailleMe, it only has 6-dot cells instead of the usual
8-dot cells, so I presume that computer braille isn't really supported?

I did not dig too deeply, but is the battery user replaceable?

I like the idea of having the cursor routing buttons, I'm not sure about only
having 6 dots.

8-dot cells, so I presume that computer braille isn't really supported?

I did not dig too deeply, but is the battery user replaceable?

I like the idea of having the cursor routing buttons, I'm not sure about only
having 6 dots.

Richard

Google "braille me" and you'll get the website on the first hit. It's a 20-cell
braille display with cursor routing buttons selling for about $450.

What it comes down to is personal preference.
I'm waiting to get my hands on the Orbit Reader 20 to see how it compares to
other displays.
I've used:
HIMS Braille Edge 40,
Baum's Vario Ultra 20 and 40,
Humanware's Braillliant BI,
Freedom Scientific's Focus 40 and 14; not to mention several of the full
braille note takers.

Of the above list, the HIMS BrailleEdge 40 was my favorite. But, when it died
after 3 years and was going to cost close to $2,500 to repair when a new one
was just a little more, I decided to wait to see the Orbit 20, which I have not
seen yet.

I liked the Braille Edge because it is quiet, solidly built, easy to switch
from USB to Bluetooth, has basic note taking functionality using an SD card and
comes with a 2 year warrantee.

It is too bad there are not places where you can go and test all the displays
to see which one fits your needs the best, because there is no one display that
is right for everyone.

HTH,
Richard

The Focus works very well with laptops, iPhones, and other devices. You can
update the firmware yourself. I have done it. It is not bulky. It is very
sturdy. Especially the new fifth gen 40 and 14.. I still wish they had a 20
instead of a 14 but both the 20 and 14 are great.

RE: best braille display foor ios and bluetooth

2018-02-03 Thread M. Taylor
I have only just reviewed this thread and its very interesting.

As for me, I would never consider purchasing anything other than a 40 cell
Braille display. I own a 20 cell Braille display but find it very fatiguing to
use.

Currently, I'm using a Focus 40 Blue that I obtained in 2013.

All I can say is that it is a true workhorse.

I have used it for hundreds and hundreds of Braille input hours and countless
more for Braille output. In fact, I used it to obtain my EBAE and UEB Braille
Proofreading and EBAE and UEB Braille Transcriber certification licenses.

It works beautifully with iOS 11.x.

Were I to purchase a new Braille display, based on my past experience and given
the fact that I am a Jaws for Windows user, I would stick with Freedom
Scientific products.

What it comes down to is personal preference.
I'm waiting to get my hands on the Orbit Reader 20 to see how it compares to
other displays.
I've used:
HIMS Braille Edge 40,
Baum's Vario Ultra 20 and 40,
Humanware's Braillliant BI,
Freedom Scientific's Focus 40 and 14; not to mention several of the full
braille note takers.

Of the above list, the HIMS BrailleEdge 40 was my favorite. But, when it
died after 3 years and was going to cost close to $2,500 to repair when a
new one was just a little more, I decided to wait to see the Orbit 20, which
I have not seen yet.

I liked the Braille Edge because it is quiet, solidly built, easy to switch
from USB to Bluetooth, has basic note taking functionality using an SD card
and comes with a 2 year warrantee.

It is too bad there are not places where you can go and test all the
displays to see which one fits your needs the best, because there is no one
display that is right for everyone.

HTH,
Richard

RE: best braille display foor ios and bluetooth

2018-02-03 Thread Richard Turner

HTH,
Richard

So the focus works well with ios 11? I thought it would be a fairly bulky
device what are your experiences for using it on the go? Does it work well in
combination with laptops or is it to deep so that you have to reach too far
back?
I hope the braille cells wont be broken too quickly…

I tried the Brailliant for all of one day in early December. Bluetooth
sucked, and Usb was ok but not great. I sent it back. I now have the
focus 40 5th gen and absolutely love it. Dot quality is crisper, made of
more and steel no plastic, sd slot included for use as a future ability
to read books and possibly write in stand-alone mode. It comes with a
nice case, can connect to five bluetooth devices, and I would recommend
it.
