I agree some people can be negative, and this includes the blind as well
as the sighted, but asking for a feature isn't the same as being
ungrateful, continuously complaining or never being satisfied. I agree
we should be appreciative of the developments going on with the
accessibility of mobile devices and apps, but I also think we should be
able to ask for improvements and not just be satisfied with whatever
some developer at Microsoft or Apple thinks we need. A large reason we
have the options we do now is because blind people have asked for
features and improvements in the past, and in the spirit of working
together and making things better, I think we should be able to continue
to ask for improvements and features without being told we're never
satisfied, ungrateful, or constantly complaining.

So, instead of recognizing that for the very first time, people who are blind
have been given access to handwriting, you are going to focus on what it cannot
do?
This is a revolutionary step toward accessibility for people without sight.
Now, if you want to write the developer and make a request that they work on
allowing a way to combine the Document Channel, with the handwriting, fine. But
as far as I'm concerned, Microsoft deserves nothing but praise for this huge
step forward. And, since the person at Microsoft who spearheaded this app is
blind, he probably is already working on recognition in forms.

Just my opinion.

I’m sure it depends a great deal on the person’s handwriting, but
apparently if the handwriting is relatively normal it does a great
job. One thing that is mentioned when you switch to that channel for
the first time is that the writing has to be right side up, I assume
those who get no results at all might have it upside down or
sideways, but there aren’t that many possibilities so one just has to
keep rotating the paper if it doesn’t work at first.

Add to all this that from the little I know, Seeing AI is the only
app/platform I have heard of that can even recognize handwriting at
all. I've heard over the years that no product or OCR software has
been able to recognize handwriting. At the training center I work at,
students have been raving about this new ability for the last week.

Hi,
I think it’s very interesting that some blind people complain when they don’t
get what they think they need, and yet when they get something there very
ungrateful and continuously complain about it.
We all need to work together and figure things out and improve what we have and
strive to find new ways to help others and do new things.

What I can say is, for the first time in my life I was actually able to read my
high school diploma that was cool, also for the first time in my life I was
actually able to read some cards that we got from our wedding that was cool.

Choosing handwriting mode wont read printed text, it doesn't make any
sence specially when we are reading some kind of forms where few
entries have been filled in handwriting. For example, , whether
written name is persons name or his father's name, is not clear .

RE: hand writing recognition with seeing AI

2017-12-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Andy,

Quite a few people have reported very good results, why propose it’s not
working before you try it?
I’m sure it depends a great deal on the person’s handwriting, but apparently if
the handwriting is relatively normal it does a great job. One thing that is
mentioned when you switch to that channel for the first time is that the
writing has to be right side up, I assume those who get no results at all might
have it upside down or sideways, but there aren’t that many possibilities so
one just has to keep rotating the paper if it doesn’t work at first.

Regards,
Sieghard

It seems like a kind of parlar game, but i hope that I'm wrong.

  Simon,
I do not find most of the stands work with Seeing AI, they are not quite tall
enough.
The trick is to keep the phone level, with the camera pointing toward the
middle of the page, about 18 inches above the page.
One method that might help you for practice is to take a standard 8.5 inch
wide and 11 inch long sheet document and fold it in half the long way, then
unfold it and fold it in half the short way, then unfold it and flatten it on
the table.
Now, the folds will create an intersection in the middle of the page.
Find that spot where the two folds meet in the center, and place the phone's
camera right on it.
Then, launch Seeing AI and use both hands to lift the phone straight up
slowly, keeping it level.
If you are sitting in a chair with the document on the table, the phone will
be about even with your face when it is at the right height. This of course may
vary some depending how tall you are, but at some point, you will hear "Hold
Steady" and stop moving at that point and it will take the picture.
It shouldn't take more than about 6 to 10 seconds to raise the phone to the
right height.
Once you get used to the height, etc, you won't need to use that method any
more.
  HTH,
  Richard

  hi,
Using the Seeing AI app with my iPhone 6 I am able to read, even when
in Irish, my Christmas cards from my neighbours and friends. this is really
good! now, just one thing, I have never yet managed to get a document
recognised. short document mode is fine, but the full one way you take picture
always fails. it fails because it cuts out because it is taking too long. I
imagine, this is because of my Internet connection. but if I take a picture of
a scene, it comes back very quickly with the description which is quite
accurate. so, might the problem lay elsewhere? after all, it recognises and
interpret handwriting, which has to be sent off to the cloud to be processed,
so, why not documents? any ideas?
  Very happy, Sandy

ScanJig only gets you about 11 inches from your document and costs 3 times as
much.

The trick is to keep the phone level, with the camera pointing toward the
middle of the page, about 18 inches above the page.
One method that might help you for practice is to take a standard 8.5 inch wide
and 11 inch long sheet document and fold it in half the long way, then unfold
it and fold it in half the short way, then unfold it and flatten it on the
table.
Now, the folds will create an intersection in the middle of the page.
Find that spot where the two folds meet in the center, and place the phone's
camera right on it.
Then, launch Seeing AI and use both hands to lift the phone straight up slowly,
keeping it level.
If you are sitting in a chair with the document on the table, the phone will be
about even with your face when it is at the right height. This of course may
vary some depending how tall you are, but at some point, you will hear "Hold
Steady" and stop moving at that point and it will take the picture.
It shouldn't take more than about 6 to 10 seconds to raise the phone to the
right height.
Once you get used to the height, etc, you won't need to use that method any
more.

document mode is fine, but the full one way you take picture always fails. it
fails because it cuts out because it is taking too long. I imagine, this is
because of my Internet connection. but if I take a picture of a scene, it comes
back very quickly with the description which is quite accurate. so, might the
problem lay elsewhere? after all, it recognises and interpret handwriting,
which has to be sent off to the cloud to be processed, so, why not documents?
any ideas?
Very happy, Sandy

the phone to set away you know this so I wonder if it would help if I had a

 Hi Sandy,
What I've found is that you have to hold the phone higher from the
document than with other OCR apps. It is about 18 inches for me. And you
have to hold steady when it says to hold steady and it will automatically
 take the picture.
And, yes, the handwriting recognition is amazing!

when you’re in the document channel just hold the phone quite hi above your
target text and you should be given information about what edges can be seen.
once all the edges can be seen, the picture will be taken, you will be advised
to hold still. so, you don’t have to select or double tap it is automatic.

hope this helps, Sandy

Simon,
I'd suggest you check out the Quick Help in the document channel.
It tells you what to do.
That channel is designed so you don't have to worry about manually taking the

Re: hand writing recognition with seeing AI

2017-12-17 Thread 'Sandratomkins' via VIPhone
hello Richard,
Thanks for the advice, are used your automatic take picture instead of double
tapping and I got a result! meanwhile, using the handwriting channel, I took a
quick snap of the shopping list that Hugh and I have been working on. he,
obviously, didn’t anticipate my sudden access to his written word, so he was a
little embarrassed when my phone read me some of the rude remarks he made in
the margins of the list! this, for me, is a game changer. Notes and memos can
be left on those yellow sticky things and we will be able to read them! I have
always wanted to read those things. I love reading my Christmas card
signatures. never thought I’d here myself say this, but well done Microsoft!

than with other OCR apps. It is about 18 inches for me. And you have to hold
steady when it says to hold steady and it will automatically take the picture.
And, yes, the handwriting recognition is amazing!
HTH,
Richard

hi,
Using the Seeing AI app with my iPhone 6 I am able to read, even when in Irish,
my Christmas cards from my neighbours and friends. this is really good! now,
just one thing, I have never yet managed to get a document recognised. short
document mode is fine, but the full one way you take picture always fails. it
fails because it cuts out because it is taking too long. I imagine, this is
because of my Internet connection. but if I take a picture of a scene, it comes
back very quickly with the description which is quite accurate. so, might the
problem lay elsewhere? after all, it recognises and interpret handwriting,
which has to be sent off to the cloud to be processed, so, why not documents?
any ideas?
Very happy, Sandy
