Given he is obviously paying attention, perhaps that light really was orange!

Disconnect your USB headset then try inserting your headphones.
If still no go... Try starting up in Safe Mode.
To start up into Safe Mode (to Safe Boot), do this:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift
Hi Tim,
If none of the suggestions have corrected the problem, run the Apple Hardware
Test (AHT)
Hold down the D key while starting up.
If you get the Hardware Test screen, select the extended test.
If you don't, the Hardware Test is not resident on your hard drive, and you'll
need to start
Tim,
further to my email earlier today; a sign that the ribbon cable is probably
suffering is, whenever the Mini is on, there is NOT a red glow in the sound-out
socket of the Mini.

Hi,
I have an intel Mac Mini late 2009 running under Lion.
There is no light, green or red, shining from the headphones port.
AHT run on extended - says there are no problems.

Ray Forma gets the Gold Logie tonight!
I opened up the Mac Mini and found a ball of dust across one of the ends of the
ribbon cable ends. The cable was connecting fine, but I suspect the dust was
creating just enough of a nuisance to short something out..

Hi Tim,
You could be experiencing a hardware failure. I know it is always a surprise
when hardware fails, but when software fixes doggedly refuse to work it is
indicative of possible hardware problems.
If you have an external drive, you could try a clean install of any compatible

One additional though. Have you tired a different set of speakers or
headphones? There could always be an internal break in the cable.

You just beat me Carlo ;-)
I had this happen on a clients MacBook some time back and I inserted my iPhones
headphones into the output sound port and all worked.
Then inserted his headphones back into the same port and they then worked.
Sometimes when you pull headphones out of the port you can
I'm no expert on this, but the audio out can provide both analog and
digital output, and there's a little microswitch hidden inside the
socket. If that switch gets accidentally changed, audio fails. There is
a little light in there which indicates one or the other modes, but I'm
not sure
Clearing an obstruction is as good a description as any, Ronni. I have also
resorted on occasion with some success to incantations. :-)

Hi Rob,

It operates by sending green light pulses down an optical fibre. So if the
light is on the Mac mini is in digital audio mode. When digital audio is on
standard 3.5 mm headphones / speakers will not operate.

I recently opened a Mac Mini of mine:
Model Name: Mac mini
Model Identifier: Macmini1,1
Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
Processor Speed: 1.66 GHz
to install bigger memory and bigger HD. When I reassembled my Mini the internal
speaker was silent, as was the sound
A PRAM reset can also help reset sound as well.
Worth a try also.
Kind regards
